Google Pixel phones can now measure heart and respiration rate using their cameras

Google revealed just over a month ago that the Google Fit app will soon help users measure their heart rate as well as the respiration rate using only their phone’s cameras. Well, the company has today announced that the feature has not started to roll out. The healthy-monitoring features of the Google Fit app are currently limited to the Pixel smartphones. However, Google has promised that it will soon be expanded to other Android smartphones as well.

The health-monitoring tricks are currently limited to Google’s Pixel smartphones

In order to measure your heart rate, all you have to do is hold your finger over your Pixel phone’s rear camera lens and apply a little bit of pressure. The Google Fit app will detect the pulse in your fingertip to measure your heart rate. However, Google advises in clear words that the heart rate readings taken by the camera are not intended for medical use, as so is the respiratory rate calculated using the front camera.

In order to measure the respiratory rate, you’ll have to keep your Pixel smartphone on a stable surface and then sit still in its view. Now, the Google Fit app will monitor the movement of your chest cavity as you sit still and breathe, and will then present you the respiratory rate in breaths per minute. Google recommends that if you’re wearing masks or hats, they should be removed for accurate results. Additionally, if you’ve just finished a vigorous physical activity, you should take some rest and return your breathing to a normal level before taking the reading.

The heart and respiratory rate readings are not intended for medical use

Once you’ve taken your heart or respiration rate reading, you can choose to save it in the app as a health log for a lengthy assessment over time. And in case you’re worried about the privacy of your health data. Google assures that the video stream used for measuring the heart and respiratory rate is processed on-device and in real-time, which means no data is uploaded to Google’s servers

You can watch the video below on how to measure your heart or respiratory rate via the Google Fit app using only your Pixel smartphone’s camera:

Adobe may give us Google Pixel quality pictures with a new ‘universal camera app’

We know that Google Pixel devices have some of the best cameras in the Android market today. However, they aren’t famous for having the best or the largest camera sensors around. These phones deliver great photos thanks to its image processing software, and it seems that Adobe has taken the first step to create a new camera app that could give us Pixel quality pictures in just about any smartphone.

Marc Levoy was the lead developer of the camera software found in Google Pixel phones, and now, four months after leaving Google, he has now joined Adobe as a Vice President and Fellow. He is supposed to work on the concept of a universal camera app for Adobe. He should also be working with Adobe’s Sensei Team, an AI-based software intended for image professionals. It also uses machine learning to improve the performance of specific photography tasks. We don’t know if this new universal camera app will be available for Android and iOS. Still, we can expect that it may be something similar to its recently launched Photoshop Camera app, which is found on both platforms.

AI Shutter could be Xiaomi’s Top Shot alternative

It seems that Xiaomi is working on a new feature called AI Shutter that will work like Google’s Top Shot on Pixel devices. According to some information discovered by the guys over at XDA-Developers, Xiaomi could deliver this new feature with the next MIUI 12 update.

We know that Pixels have some of the best cameras in the Android segment, and it’s because of its image processing software. One of its best software features is Top Shot, which makes Google Pixel devices take a burst of photos, and then then, a machine learning algorithm selects the best images. Xiaomi’s new AI Shutter would do exactly the same. This feature usually looks for the best pictures, where the subject is smiling, and looking at the camera without blinking.

AI Shutter wouldn’t be the only new feature headed to Xiaomi phones since we could also get Magic Clone and full-screen gesture support to MIUI’s camera app. However, we will have to wait for a stable MIUI 12 version to be ready.
