I hope Microsoft brings Cortana to Android

Back in the day we used to refer to our electronic devices as PDAs — Personal Digital Assistants. They weren’t. In fact, they weren’t much more than battery-operated day planners, the paper versions of which were in style around the turn of the century. Today these devices have given way to Internet-connected smartphones that are finally starting to include the ability to complete core tasks via voice-assisted input. Apple has Siri. Google has Google Now. Finally, Microsoft has Cortana.

iOS 7 dizziness, Google Glass cross-country, Halo on Windows Phone & more – Pocketnow Daily

Watch today’s Pocketnow Daily as we talk about the Gold edition of the Samsung Galaxy S 4, which we knew wouldn’t take too long. Microsoft is next as we see how a cloud-based version of Halo can even run on Windows Phone. T-Mobile follows as the company has now decided to ditch BlackBerry from retail completely. We later talk about Google Glass and how the company plans to take it cross-country for people to give it a try. We end today’s show talking about the space gray iPad, and also the fact that people are complaining of iOS 7 making them dizzy. All this and more ...

Pocketnow Weekly 053: HTCs are getting smaller, and Lumias are getting laaaaaarger

Never let it be said that Multimedia Manager Jaime Rivera isn’t a trouper. In the hot Honduras heat, with no power and no A/C (and, incidentally, no shirt), he still manages to show up on-time to the Pocketnow Weekly podcast. That right there is some broadcast heroism, folks. No matter what Taylor Martin’s new-office excuses are. But that’s not what we’re here to talk about. No, we’re about a week overdue for an audio-only examination of Nokia’s newest flagship, the Lumia 1020: we’ll cover it’s high, low, and so-so points, and debate just how ...

Halo: Spartan Assault hands on (Video)

The launch party for the much-anticipated new Halo game; Halo: Spartan Assault for Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 just happened on July 16th in New York City and we got to take a look at how it works thanks to a little demo from 343 Studios.  No one was able to tell us an exact release date for the game just yet, and that’s probably because the developers are still putting a few final touches on it.  The version we got to demo didn’t even have all of the levels or the achievements put together. Still, we expect it to be released in July and it will be available first only on ...

How to get Chat-Heads-like, Halo-style floating notifications without a custom ROM (video)

Some of the notifications that you receive are very important, others? Not so much. Telling the difference between the two requires you to pull down your notification shade, and dismiss your unimportant notifications in the hopes that you can find your important ones. Chat-Heads and other floating notifications try and tell you who it is that’s trying to contact you quicker and easier so you can determine if it’s the important contact that you’ve been waiting for — or something less important. Up until now you’ve had to have either Facebook Home, a custom ...

Paranoid Android Halo Hands-On (Video)

We’ve shown off the Paranoid Android Custom ROM before. This is the ROM that enables phone, phablet, and tablet mode regardless of whether you’re using a phone, phablet, or tablet — and you can change the way your device displays any app. Paranoid Android also includes a very functional Pie-shaped control and notification area that we’ve shown you as well. Recent builds of Paranoid Android include a Halo-styled notification system. When a new notification comes in, it’s presented to you in a small circle that ...
