Stereo speakers on Galaxy S8 rumored to be powered by Harman

HTC made smartphone speaker audio a priority years ago — so much so, it audaciously proclaimed its “BoomSound” hardware as best in its class. Apple has only just embraced moving sound towards humans’ faces. And it may be Samsung’s turn next.

Word out of FoneArena‘s sources say that the Galaxy S8 will feature two speakers. Samsung will put technology acquired from connected car company Harman in the speakers, which will be branded with the Harman label and a market name — like HTC did with “BoomSound”.

Samsung acquired Connecticut-based Harman last month at a price of $8 billion. The deal is expected to close in the middle of next year.

With a 4K display rumored and Daydream VR therefore a top priority, it would only make sense to bring along a more robust audio experience for consumers popping their Galaxy S8 into a headset. Let’s just hope things make sense in reality to bring those speakers along.

Samsung phones with high-end Harman audio tech coming in 2018, no car-making plans

Samsung’s ambition and thirst for power and profits in as many tech industry segments as possible knows almost no bounds, but even after Harman’s acquisition closes next year, the chaebol will remain uninterested in building its own car, electric, driverless or otherwise.

In case it wasn’t already abundantly clear, the “business synergies” of the world’s largest smartphone vendor and the market leader in connected car solutions is aimed at stronger collaborations with established automakers rather than feeble competition against current Harman partners like BMW, Chrysler, Jeep, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo.

IoT (Internet of Things) is still the name of the game, with Google’s Android Auto and Apple CarPlay standards looking in danger of losing steam, as Harman can take care of premium sound and infotainment systems as far as hardware is concerned, while Samsung could handle the software synching your automobile to phones, computers and other smart gadgets and objects.

But that’s not all Samsung’s paying a whopping $8 billion for, with Galaxy S series phones confirmed as likely to “adopt Harman’s high-end audio technology” as early as 2018. No, we’re afraid the 2017 GS8 and Note 8 will probably not feature any of the 1980-founded American company’s top-class sound enhancements, seeing as how the merger is still subject to various approvals and formalities, including a shareholders’ vote.

Samsung is ready to pay $8 billion for Harman’s automotive and premium audio expertise

It’s somewhat ironic, but instead of waiting to see how a far-reaching current mobile industry stagnation plays out and maybe cut expenses in the face of underwhelming financial reports of late, several tech veterans and market leaders continue to branch out and splash the cash on mergers and acquisitions.

Wireless service provider extraordinaire Verizon is still keen to spend as much as $4.8 billion on oft-loathed Yahoo to build an unstoppable digital media beast, smartphone processor-making specialist Qualcomm will become an IoT force to be reckoned with once its $47B NXP purchase closes, and perhaps most surprising of all, Samsung is now annexing Harman.

Now, as in mere months after the unprecedented Galaxy Note 7 scandal erupted, costing the world’s largest smartphone vendor billions in direct and indirect short-term losses, plus billions more down the road.

Granted, this $8 billion deal is only expected to be sealed sometime in “mid-2017”, if Harman shareholders and regulatory approvals give it the green light, which should be just a formality. There will obviously be no opposition from investors, considering the 28 percent premium Samsung has agreed to cough up based on the 1980-founded American company’s November 11 closing stock price.

It goes without saying HTC will never get to release another Harman Kardon Edition handheld, though Samsung doesn’t just want to “greatly enhance the competitiveness of its mobile, display, virtual reality and wearable products to deliver a fully differentiated audio experience for customers.”

First and foremost, Harman’s value lies in the automotive industry, with “more than 30 million vehicles currently equipped with its connected car and audio systems, including embedded infotainment, telematics, connected safety and security.” So, yeah, Samsung is finally going after Google’s Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in the “smart car” arena.
