iOS 7 shows an 80% adoption according to app usage

As much as we know that lot’s of you celebrated the launch of iOS 7, that didn’t include all of us. Aside from its clear aesthetic differences to iOS 6, it has proven to be less stable and more polarizing as well. Still, one of the advantages of being an iPhone or iPad user is that you don’t have to beg your carrier or OEM for updates, and if you were wondering how many people are actually using iOS 7, the news are in. Just four months after the launch of Apple’s new mobile operating system, the company has now posted an 80% adoption of the platform, leaving 17% to ...

iOS 7 update with home screen crash fix in works

While we haven’t necessarily experienced it ourselves, iPhones running iOS 7 have been reportedly crashing and rebooting, generating a black/white screen of death; according to reports, it is basically the splash screen which is either black on white, or vice versa, depending on the hardware color of the phone itself. Talking about this with Mashable, Trudy Muller, an Apple spokesperson, said: “We have a fix in an upcoming software update for a bug that can occasionally cause a home screen crash“. The fix is expected to be part of iOS 7.1, which is currently in beta ...

Nokia pulls HERE Maps from iTunes

When Apple Maps turned out to be a fiasco in the early days, the company’s CEO issued an apology letter at the end of September 2012, in which Tim Cook also suggested some alternatives to Apple’s own solution. Among the recommendations, there was a line to “use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app”. Soon after, Nokia made its own

Apple fined in Taiwan for interfering with iPhone pricing

20 million Taiwan Dollars — which is, today, roughly $668,000 — is the amount the Fair Trade Commission got Apple fined in Taiwan for, according to a statement on Wednesday. The reason for the fine is, according to the TFTC, Apple’s interfering with pricing of mobile service providers and handset distributors. To be specific, article 18 of Taiwan’s Fair Trade Act has been violated by Apple, who reportedly told Taiwan’s three main operators exactly how much to sell iPhones for. Apple also reportedly asked also asked Chunghwa Telecom Co., Far Eastone ...

The best way to save money on the apps you want

I’m a bit of an app addict. Each time I setup a new phone, I install somewhere in the ballpark of 50 applications. That number varies, and over the year it has grown. The more apps I buy, the larger the number inevitably gets. That also means I’ve spent a lot of money on applications. Between iOS and Android alone, I’ve probably spent upwards of $600 on applications, games, and other digital content. That may seem like a lot of money, but it’s been spread out over five years. And not everything was purchased at full price. In fact, a lot of the games, applications, ...

iOS 7 jailbreak released, just make sure to acknowledge the risks

Ever since iOS 7 was released on September 18 for compatible devices, users of the Apple OS didn’t really have too many options at a complete jailbreaking solution. However, thanks to the team behind evasi0n, you can now experiment with evasi0n7, the iOS 7.x untethered Jailbreak. You have to have a Windows (XP minimum), Mac OS X (10.6 minimum) or Linux (x86 / x86_64) machine to be able to apply this to your iPhone, iPad or iPod running iOS 7.0 through 7.0.4. However, as the official page warns, “many Cydia tweaks are not yet compatible with iOS 7″ so you’ll have ...

Pocketnow Weekly 075: 2K screens, iris scanners, and learning to use a Jolla

Just what use would an iris scanner be on a smartphone? When will 2K displays take over the smartphone world (and why should we care)? How exactly does one spell “Magotes,” anyway? If these questions have ever crossed your worried minds -and even if they haven’t- the second-to-last episode of the Pocketnow Weekly’s 2013 season is right up your twisted alley, friend. But even if you’re not interested in such tomfoolery, there’s still plenty here to ping your pong. In this episode we talk headline-grabbing rumors like the Galaxy S 5 and wooden Moto X, yes ...

Looking back at the original iPad: have we come far?

Looking at the latest round of iPads, it’s easy to say we’ve come a long way. In just under four years’ time, Apple has managed to make the latest full-sized iPad 211g lighter than the original. It’s also 2.8mm shorter, 20.2mm narrower, and almost half the thickness – 7.5mm versus the 13.4mm thickness of the original. The outward appearance has drastically changed, as well. It’s lighter, more premium, more comfortable hold, and, well, prettier. All the while, Apple has maintained the same screen size, 9.7-inches, and quadrupled the resolution, effectively ...

Top 5 annoying things about Tablets in 2013

Let’s face it, tablets aren’t perfect. We’ve had numerous editorials talking about it, and we don’t think twice about pointing these imperfections out in our reviews. Surely in life nothing is perfect, but there are surely those companies that try harder, and those that don’t. There are companies that’ll charge you the same amount of money for lesser quality products than others, and there are those that would rather lose a premium in oder to sell you what you paid for. Now that said, tablets aren’t new. We’ve used them for over a decade, and it’s interesting to note that ...

Apple has 1 million apps in its iTunes store, claims report

Appsfire is a company focused on app discovery services, and they apparently closely monitor the status quo of the Apple ecosystem. A little more than a year ago it claimed that Apple has approved 1 million applications for the iTunes app store, but so far we have not seen that number materialize neither in reality, nor in any official mention — though Apple usually makes a big deal out of its iTunes diversity. In a recent blog post, Appsfire claims that there are now 1 million apps ready and available to download in the AppStore, out of the 1.4 million “ever approved” by ...

Pocketnow Weekly 073: LG G Flex and Moto G chat with MKBHD

Earlier today, while we were busy hanging with some of you fine folks on the latest episode of the Pocketnow Live, a lot was going down elsewhere. Our LG G Flex review was in the final polishing stages; our own Taylor Martin was kicking out some coverage on Motorola’s mold-breaking budget wonder, the Moto G; and friend of the show Marques Brownlee was interviewing Dennis Woodside, CEO of Motorola Mobility. All that activity demands a followup, of course, and what better venue for an end-of-week wrapup ...

Apple Stores get iBeacon makeover

Of all the new features present in Apple’s release of iOS 7, iBeacon is probably one of the less well-understood. That should start changing as more and more users are exposed to places where iBeacons are deployed, but for the moment they just haven’t had that many opportunities to see the system in action. That situation could be getting better right now, as Apple makes a big push to get iBeacons active in its retail stores. Starting today, all of Apple’s stores in the US will begin using iBeacon technology, including both ...
