iPhone 13 Pro will be 15-20% more battery efficient despite 120Hz panel: Report

So far, multiple reliable sources have predicted that Apple will finally go with a high-refresh-rate screen for its upcoming ‘Pro’ iPhones. Yeah, Apple is a couple of years late to the ‘High Hz’ party, but it is definitely assuring to see that an iPhone that vaporizes over a thousand dollars from your wallet at least has a high-refresh-rate screen. But a 120Hz screen also chugs a lot of battery juice. However, Apple has reportedly cracked the battery efficiency code, as the iPhone 13 Pro models are said to consume 15-20% less juice despite packing a 120Hz LTPO panel.

iPhone 13 Pro finally rises up to the display standards of Android flagships

As per a report by DigiTimes (via Macrumors), Apple is going to arm the iPhone 13 Pro and its pricier iPhone 13 Pro Max sibling with a 120Hz LTPO display. Samsung and LG Display are said to be the key suppliers and are currently in the process of converting their low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) production lines into low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) units – a process that will come to completion by June.

“Samsung Display and LG Display, now offering LTPS OLED displays for iPhones, are proceeding with capacity conversion to LTPO ones at their Apple-dedicated 6G OLED lines, with the conversion likely to be completed in the first half of 2021, the sources said, adding that production capacity will drop due to the added oxide step when LTPS is converted to LTPO.”

Now, it goes without saying that a 120Hz display would be more taxing on the battery compared to a regular 60Hz screen. Apple has reportedly figured out a way to solve the battery consumption problem and has actually managed to boost the battery efficiency of the iPhone 13 Pro models by a healthy 15-20 percent. However, it is unclear how much of that efficiency boost has to do with the A15 chip powering the iPhone 13 series.

Going with an LTPO panel also opens the doors for an adaptive refresh rate implementation, which allows the screen refresh rate to vary according to on-screen content to save battery. Take for example the Galaxy S21 Ultra, whose AMOLED panel can change the refresh rate value between 5Hz for tasks like reading and 120Hz to reduce power consumption.

iPhone 13 Pro mockups that look like a crude copy predict key design changes

In the past few weeks, we’ve come across multiple rumors predicting a smaller notch on the iPhone 13 series. A leaked image of alleged iPhone 13 series front glass seemingly offered us a glimpse of a narrower notch and repositioned selfie camera as well as earpiece. Now, Japanese tech news blog Macotakara (via Macrumors) has shared purported images of a few 3D-printed mockups of the iPhone 13 Pro from Alibaba sources.

Apple has allegedly made the notch on iPhone 13 series thinner and narrower

Starting with the key change, the report mentions that the notch height on iPhone 13 has reduced been reduced to 5.30mm, down from the 5.35mm vertical height on the iPhone 12 series. Additionally, the width has also gone from 34.83mm to 26.80mm. This is contrary to previous reports – including a prediction from TFI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo – claiming that only the notch height will be reduced, but the width remains the same on iPhone 12 series.

Coming back to the fresh leak, it shows the earpiece now positioned closer to the top edge, while the selfie camera has been moved from right to left side. Face ID components such as the flood illuminator and IR sensor’s positions have been rearranged and they are now aligned in the space previously occupied by the earpiece.

Over at the back, things remain the same. We see a familiar triple camera array, LiDAR sensor, and LED flash arrangement on the alleged iPhone 13 Pro mockup as its predecessor. As per another leak, Apple is reportedly experimenting with the idea of a matte black finish for the iPhone 13 Pro models.

Additionally, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is said to come equipped with an f/1.5 wide-angle camera that will offer improved results in low-light scenarios. Apple is also said to extend the sensor-shift image stabilization tech to the entire 2021 iPhone slate after keeping it exclusive to the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Apple might finally attain matte black design nirvana with iPhone 13 Pro

It's only fair to share...Share on RedditShare on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

Samsung earned some new fans with its eye-catching matte black finish on the Galaxy S21 Ultra this year. Or in simple words, it made the ‘matte black everything’ club very happy, assuming they spent over a thousand dollars on the Samsung flagship. Now, over to the iPhone side of the ecosystem, the closest Apple has gone to the matte black nirvana is with the graphite finish on the iPhone 12 Pro duo that rocks a textured matte glass black. However, it appears that the iPhone 13 Pro might arrive in a matte black trim as well.

A orange / bronze trim is reportedly on the consideration table as well

As per a video on YouTube channel EveryThingApplePro that cites leakster Max Weinbach, Apple might dress the iPhone 13 Pro and its Max version in a matte black finish. Additionally, the metallic sides will do a better job at keeping away fingerprints and smudges. To recall, the glossy stainless steel sides of the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max have received some flak for being fingerprint magnets. There is also some sort of bronze color option in the early PVT (Product Validation Test) stages, however, chances of it making it to the final list are slim.

The video also mentions that the mechanism behind portrait mode is getting some rework on the iPhone 13 Pro pair. The leakster claims that portrait mode will now do its magic by combining data collected by the camera sensor as well as the LiDAR sensor. The latter is also touted to help with improving edge detection. The wave of upgrades will also carry over to the portrait video department.

Portrait mode is receiving some major upgrade on the iPhone 13 Pro duo

Another key aesthetic upgrade will be a smaller notch. Earlier this week, alleged images of iPhone 13 series front glass revealed a smaller notch design that sees the front camera lens switch sides, while the earpiece has moved to the top. As per previous leaks, a major upgrade that the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will bring to the table is a 120Hz display. Archrival Samsung will reportedly supply the LTPO panels for the upcoming Apple flagships.

The ultra-wide camera on the upcoming phones will also be a step up vis-a-vis the iPhone 12 line-up, and the new sensor-shift image stabilization technology will likely be extended to the entire iPhone 13 family after being an iPhone 12 Pro Max exclusive.

It will take two more years for iPhones to bring a ‘Persicope’ Telephoto lens

It’s a cycle – new iPhone launches, and within a month we start getting rumors about the next iPhone, and within six months leaks about iPhones that are 2 years away start trickling in. The latest leak says that iPhones will adopt a “periscopic telephoto lens” in 2023, which means the feature is still 2 years away. For reference, the periscope telephoto lens has been a part of Android flagships from Samsung and Huawei for a while now.

No hurry, take your time Apple

The latest development comes from MacRumors, which cites TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo to report that Apple will introduce a periscope telephoto lens on its iPhones in 2023. The feature is touted to allow for significant improvements in optical zoom capabilities. On the other hand, Samsung introduced 100x zoom with the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which was meh but improved it significantly with the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The iPhone competitors are already offering this feature, and are far ahead in zooming capabilities.

Previously, Kuo had said that he expected Apple to adopt a periscope lens in 2022 iPhone. However, it appears he now believes that won’t happen until 2023.

Kuo details the path for next three iPhones

Apart from the said feature for 2023, Kuo also detailed the camera features of the upcoming Apple iPhones. The high-end 2021 iPhones are also slated to feature an upgraded telephoto lens. Apple could upgrade from a 5-element lens to a 6-element lens. Further, rear-facing camera improvements coming to high-end iPhones in 2022 will focus on the telephoto lens. The company might be upgrading from a 6-element lens to a 7-element lens for the ‌iPhone‌ 14.

New FaceID transmitter on 2021 iPhones

Kuo also detailed a feature for the upcoming iPhones. The analyst believes that Apple will adopt a new Face ID transmitter that’s made from a plastic material instead of glass. However, it is not clear if this design change will have end-user benefits for ‌iPhone‌ owners or if it will simply mean a reduction in production cost for Apple.

Next iPhone/iPad Pro to have a variable refresh rate of up to 240Hz? Apple’s patent says so

Rumors surrounding the next iPhone have already started trickling in despite the iPhone 12 being launch just a few months back. From a smaller notch to the return of TouchID, we’ve heard it all in the past few weeks. Now, it is tipped that the upcoming iPhone 13 could feature a variable refresh rate of up to 240Hz. This is surprising since Apple’s ProMotion technology that is found on the iPad Pro is limited to 120Hz.

The latest development comes from a patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (via Patently Apple). It describes an iPhone display, which could have high refresh mode enabled. It might be capable of updating content two times, three times, or even four times the native refresh rate.

60Hz, 120Hz, 180Hz, 240Hz

The refresh rate on the next Apple devices is said to range from 60Hz to 240Hz with 120Hz and 180Hz options also available. Notably, Xiaomi and Samsung are the only companies as of now that provide a variable refresh rate on their smartphones. It ranges from 24Hz to 120Hz.

It should be noted that a patent doesn’t necessarily mean that the feature will surely come to the next range of devices. However, it does suggest what the company is planning to do next. And, as of now, rumors have only been pointing towards the presence of a 120Hz refresh rate on the next iPhone lineup. Moreover, this patent isn’t limited to the iPhones but could be extended to other Apple devices including the iPad Pro series. Hence, we could get an Apple iPad Pro with a 240Hz variable refresh rate.

Apple 240Hz

Earlier rumors have suggested that Apple is working on bringing a 120Hz refresh rate to the OLED displays of the top 2 models of its next iPhone lineup. According to the past reports, you can expect:

  • iPhone 13 mini- 5.4-inch LTPS display, 60Hz refresh rate.
  • iPhone 13- 6.1-inch LTPS display, 60Hz refresh rate.
  • iPhone 13 Pro- 6.1-inch LTPO display, 120Hz refresh rate.
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max- 6.7-inch LTPO display, 120Hz refresh rate.
