Nokia Refocus app now available for PureView smartphones running Amber

It’s not Lytro-like light-field camera, but it’s as close as it gets, on your regular smartphone, given it is powered by Windows Phone, and it’s a Lumia made by Nokia. The Refocus app from Nokia is now available and it allows you to basically snap a picture now, without worrying about focus, and focus on objects later, again and again. In order to get the best results, you should aim to capture “scenes with a great contrast in the depth of field, like macro shots”. The way ...

The Nexus 5 has optical stabilization at the expense of more megapixels. Good.

As we spent the morning anticipating on the latest episode of the Pocketnow Weekly podcast, Google’s long-awaited Nexus 5 finally got itself announced today. It was a long slog; even earlier today, as the minutes turned to hours and all those “confirmations” started dissolving into the nothingness from whence they came, it was looking like yet another false alarm. But just as we were starting to retool for a November 1 release date, the Nexus 5

Nokia Pro Camera coming to Lumia 920, 925, and 928

The 41-megapixel sensor, Zeiss lens, and the overall hardware construction of the imaging system is just part of the picture snapping capabilities on the new Nokia Lumia 1020. A huge part is played by the Nokia Pro camera, bundled out of the box with the Lumia 1020, just like the Nokia Smart Cam comes with the Lumia 925. Allowing you to manually tweak most of the settings to achieve the best looking stills, the Nokia Pro Camera app will also arrive to other Lumia phones later this year. Official ...

Itsdagram (Instance) is the perfect example of a third-party app gone right

Not sure if you remember, but we’ve talked about Instagram around these parts before. We’ve gave you a guided tour of the photo-sharing app when it first came to Android last Spring, and the relative merit of the app has been disputed more times on the Pocketnow Weekly podcast than is probably necessary. But regardless of your personal feelings about the social photography title (looking at you here

Sony Xperia Tablet Z & Nokia Lumia 928 – Pocketnow U-Review Episode 002

For a while now, the mobile-tech review landscape has looked much the same. Reviewers like us craft lengthy written pieces packed with charts, photos, and videos, and readers like you … read them. Sure, you have the opportunity to respond in the comments, and most good editors will answer questions there, but there’s precious little real-time interaction between reader and reviewer. There’s not much chance to ask questions, seek clarifications, or take a quick look at that one little ...

Pocketnow Weekly 047: Nokia EOS rumors, webOS sentimentalism, & a whole lotta outtakes

Sometimes you get listener mail that asks how the band got together in the first place. Sometimes that happens the day after you drop some nostalgic sentimentalism all over the internet. Sometimes, simultaneously, there are some sweet, juicy rumors and leaks about a top-of-the-line camera phone with what looks like a moon crater on it. Sometimes you gotta put all that into a podcast with the original cadre of Pocketnow ‘casters, and see what comes out. All that, plus the longest outtake reel in the history of Pocketnow, more Nokia EOS rumors than you can shake a stick at, the ...

Nokia Showdown: Lumia 928 vs Lumia 920 (Video)

The Lumia 928 is an important smartphone for Verizon Wireless, and if you’re a Verizon customer who’s been waiting for a flagship Nokia Windows Phone, it’s an important smartphone for you. We gave the 928 the Quick Review treatment last week, doing our best to consider it on its own merits, avoiding the temptation to compare it too closely with its AT&T-shackled predecessor – because we knew the time would come for such things. Well that time, friends, is now: the Lumia ...

Stephen Elop: “We have much more planned for 2013″

Stephen Elop, CEO of Nokia, said that there’s much more to come from Nokia this year. Talking to Mobilegeeks while in Berlin, Stephen Elop reiterated his thoughts concerning the switch to Windows Phone, made on February 11, 2011: it was the right choice. The company recently unveiled the Nokia Lumia 928 for Verizon and the

Nokia Lumia 928 Quick Review

In the mobile world, carrier exclusivity is a mixed bag. Sometimes, it results in a huge boon to both carrier and manufacturer: witness the astonishing heights to which the iPhone propelled AT&T after its exclusive debut on then-Cingular’s network in 2007. On other occasions, though, the mating of a device to a lone provider doesn’t work out as well – as the Sprint/Palm partnership proved with the Pre in 2009. The exclusive mating of Nokia’s Lumia 900 with AT&T resulted neither in runaway success nor dismal failure – but it’s easy to see how the ...

Additional smartphones and tablets confirmed for Verizon high-speed AWS LTE

Yesterday we told you about Verizon’s efforts to start offering LTE service on its newly-acquired AWS spectrum space, with the first markets going live later this year. Like T-Mobile did for phones like the Note II when it switched-on its own LTE network, Verizon revealed plans to activate this AWS mode on specific handsets through a future firmware update, giving them access to higher-speed data. At the time, the only phone we knew would be getting such an update was Samsung’s Galaxy S 4. Today, we can ...

Nokia Lumia 928 unboxing (Video)

Time was, you couldn’t get a 9xx-series Lumia on any U.S. carrier but AT&T. For over a year, the nation’s second-largest wireless provider has exerted a fierce stranglehold on the high-end Nokia segment, forcing competing carriers to offer only midrange handsets if they wanted to carry the finnish OEM’s wares. Things change, though. The Nokia Lumia 928 is the first Lumia flagship to cross the blue/red divide, and it’s already available from America’s largest carrier, ...

Lumia 928 Online Orders Face Slight Delay?

After what seemed like an endless torrent of leaks, Nokia’s Lumia 928 for Verizon finally went official earlier this month, getting its formal announcement a week ago. At the time, we learned that the phone would be available in Verizon retail stores beginning today, May 16. We also see online sales of the phone open up today, but the 928 isn’t quite ready to ship just yet. According to Verizon, orders for the Lumia 928 will ship by next Monday, May 20. We ...

Nokia, Haven’t You Learned Anything From HTC or Samsung?

In the mobile space, while most hardware OEMs are multi-million dollar corporations with tens of thousands of employees, only a select few are turning a profit and thriving. Even some of the most reputable brands in the industry – HTC, Motorola, LG, Huawei, etc. – are struggling to get a foothold in the smartphone realm. With major re-branding and a fresh start in 2011 and the beginning of 2012, we didn’t exactly expect Nokia to recover from years of turbulence overnight. But we did hope it would impact the company … positively. Now, over one year later, the company is still ...

Lumia 925, Lumia 920, Lumia 928: Comparison (Video)

Nokia added two new Lumias to its lineup this month, first with the announcement of the Lumia 928 for Verizon, and just now the Lumia 925. As descendants of the stalwart Lumia 920, these phones all share some basic hardware, and for this group that means packing some serious camera hardware. Still, these three aren’t cookie-cutter copies of each other. Decisions Nokia’s made, both in regards to hardware and software, have shaped how each ...
