Apple is dreaming about an iPhone with the Mac Pro’s cheese grater design

When Apple introduced the new Mac Pro back in 2019, the internet had a field day mocking its cheese grater design. While Apple says that the design maximizes airflow and also helps with structural integrity, it’s the uncanny similarity with the kitchen tool that comes to mind first when you come across the machine. Well, it appears that Apple might bring this design to more products in the feature, with iPhones being one of them.

As per a patent titled Housing Construction filed before the USPTO and spotted first by PatentlyApple, Apple is considering the 3D lattice pattern of the Mac Pro for iPhones as well. The reason cited in the patent description is familiar – optimize air flow, offer better protection for the internal components, and of course, be pleasing to look at. However, the latter part about ‘looking pleasing’ is up for debate. Here’s what the patent application says:

The components of an electronic device, for example a housing of an electronic device, may include three-dimensional structures having features tailored to the specific purposes for which they are employed. The components of an electronic device may be configured to provide physical support or protection to other components of the electronic device, provide for thermal transmission, provide for airflow through or around the electronic device, or provide for one or more various other purposes. Additionally, the components of the electronic device may be designed to provide a unique and pleasing look and feel for a user.
In simple words, Apple wants to replicate the ‘inspired by nature’ lattice pattern of the Mac Pro’s panel for roughly the same set of benefits on the iPhone as well. And oh, the patent diagrams also envision the same aesthetic makeover for a trash can-style Mac Pro. Yes, the same filthy expensive cylindrical Mac that was an upgradability nightmare. However, Apple is not limiting itself to metal when it comes to replicating the 3D lattice design on iPhones, as the patent also explores options such as ceramic, glass, amorphous metal, polycarbonate, and even a combination of the aforementioned materials.

Coming back to the cheese grater-esque aesthetic overhaul for the iPhone, the patent diagrams give us a look at what it might look like. Unlike the Mac Pro, the lattice pattern will be used on the back as well as the side rails. It adds that the ‘light weight and stiffness of the three-dimensional structure can also provide a user with a pleasing experience when handling the device.’ And in case you’re wondering, yes, the patent also describes a 3D-design metal sheet in multiple color options.

As for the manufacturing process, Apple might go with 3D printing to achieve the desired cheese grater aesthetics on iPhones. And before your imaginations go wild, do keep in mind that this is a patent application we’re talking about, which means things are very much in the concept stage and won’t necessarily make it out as a commercially available product!

Apple working on redesigned iMacs and a smaller Mac Pro with in-house silicon

As per a bombshell report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is planning a major redesign for its Mac portfolio this year. The most important one is a design upgrade for iMacs. The report claims that Apple is planning to launch two new iMacs – carrying the internal name J456 and J457 – this year that will replace the existing Intel-powered 21.5-inch and 27-inch models. The upcoming redesigned iMacs will come equipped with Apple’s own silicon, similar to the updated MacBook Pro and Air models that arrived late last year.

Thinner bezels, flat back, in-house silicon, and two sizes

Talking about the aesthetic overhaul coming to the iMacs, Gurman notes the new Apple all-in-one computers will lose the thick bezels in favor of a cleaner design similar to the Pro Display XDR monitor. Additionally, the curved back will also be tweaked to make it flat. “The iMac redesign will be one of the biggest visual updates to any Apple product this year, according to people familiar with the company’s roadmap,” the report adds.

But that’s not all, as Apple is also looking to freshen up the Mac Pro line of desktop computers as well. One of the upcoming Mac Pro updates will continue to use the same design as the 2019 model, jokingly immortalized as ‘cheese grater’ in the world of consumer technology. This one will likely come equipped with an Intel processor, and might well be one of the last Macs to rely on Intel before Apple fully switches to in-house silicon.

Is a cube-shaped Mac Pro in the pipeline?

A Mac Pro refresh with Intel CPU, a smaller model with Apple silicon

However, more interesting will be the second Mac Pro model that will reportedly be half the size of the latest-gen Mac Pro. “The design will feature a mostly aluminum exterior and could invoke nostalgia for the Power Mac G4 Cube, a short-lived smaller version of the Power Mac, an earlier iteration of the Mac Pro,” writes Gurman. Now, that is something worth looking forward to.

Lastly, Apple is also working on a more affordable monitor – unlike the $5000 Pro Display XDR – that will have a more mass-market appeal and will be geared towards the average consumer, rather than the professional-centric approach of the Pro Display XDR. However, the cheaper monitor won’t have the same level of brightness output and high contrast ratio as its pricier sibling.

Apple now sells SSD kits for Mac Pro, gives the 16-inch MacBook Pro a graphics boost

Apple has started selling an in-house SSD kit for the MacBook Pro that is targeted primarily at existing owners who want to upgrade the storage but don’t want to buy third party expansion modules. The company’s SSD kits come in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB variants, equivalent to what you can already configure the Mac Pro with, at the time of buying.

Unfortunately, Apple is yet to reveal how much the SSD kit will cost, but it certainly won’t be cheap. In addition to the Mac Pro, Apple has also given the 16-inch MacBook Pro a graphics power boost, and it is now already available to configure from the Apple website at a steep price premium.

The new variant uses the AMD Radeon Pro 5600M GPU with 8GB of HBM2 memory, but the upgrade will cost you a cool $700. However, if you want to save money, the lower-end option with the AMD Radeon Pro 5600M GPU with both 4GB and 8GB memory is still listed for purchase.

OnePlus might not launch another McLaren Edition phone in the future

Remember the phone with the coolest name ever? Yes, we’re talking about the OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren Edition. It seems we won’t have another one to mock as, OnePlus is no longer listed in the official McLaren partners page. None of the companies has made a statement yet but it seems that their partnership has come to an end, meaning that we won’t see any McLaren branded phone from OnePlus soon. It could be a mistake or part of a strategy but, the logo still isn’t back on the site. We’ll keep you posted in case we have official statements. Let’s hope that if they do decide to work together again, the name becomes a bit less ridiculous.

We have new details about the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 launch event

Now as for some sad possible updates from the pandemic, well, Samsung usually hosts two major Unpacked Events each year for their flagship releases but. I’m actually shocked we still got the February Unpacked. Thing is, for obvious reasons this year will be different. According to a report from South Korea, Samsung has already taken their decision and this will be the first time ever that the company is releasing a flagship online. We get tons of silent releases online from Samsung but they will obviously have some sort of event for the Note’s Unpacked. The event is still slated for August but we don’t have any specific dates yet. Some other products we might get at this event include obviously the Galaxy Note 20, the Galaxy Fold 2 and some wearables.

Samsung Galaxy S21 could arrive with Chinese OLED displays

A couple of weeks ago we reported that Samsung could be ditching Samsung Display for the Galaxy S21 but, not entirely. According to some industry insiders, after a month of preliminary negotiations, Samsung just sent an official request for quotation to BOE which hints to the deal happening and also the fact that they are already working on the S21. Now, it isn’t clear if we’ll be getting a Galaxy S21 Ultra but, that one wouldn’t be using a BOE display because these orders are for 90Hz displays. They have also sent a quotation request to Samsung Display for 60Hz and 120Hz displays so, they aren’t leaving them completely. According to other insiders, Samsung is trying to get Samsung Display to lower the price on the panels and the threat of having BOE replace them might work.

Story of the day:

More rumors say that the Google Pixel 5 will have a mid-range processor

And finally, let’s call this the most interesting news today. I mean, Pixels have taken the spotlight for weeks now, though I wish they would sell as much as people care about the news. Thing is we’ve been getting several rumors that the Google Pixel 5 might not be a flagship. Yesterday we covered the fact that a Google survey showed that this phone might cost as low as $699. Now, XDA has found some new evidence in the Android 11 Developer Preview that hint to the Pixel 5 bringing the Snapdragon 765G processor. It isn’t clear if it will be the 765G or the new 768G but it is compatible to what they found in the new Google Camera APK for upcoming Pixel phones. The price tag also hints that this phone might not bring a Snapdragon 865 after all.

Dell redesigns XPS 15, unveils XPS 17 rocking latest Intel processors and NVIDIA GPUs

Now, for those of you that aren’t interested in a Mac, we finally get some good looking competition to return along with the recent launches from Microsoft. After three years of recycled designs, Dell is finally updating their XPS Laptops. The company just announced a new XPS 15 Ultrabook and the XPS 17 which Dell claims is the smallest 17in laptop there is. To make matters more special is the price tag. The XPS 15 starts at $1300 for base configuration, but your upgrade options can get up to a 10th Gen Intel Core i7, 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, starting but that’ll hold you back $2449. The XPS 17 starts at $1499 for the base model, but configurations allow up to an octa-core 10th gen Intel Core i7, and up to 64GB of RAM, but that price is a steep.

Epic Games Store is down because everyone wants a free copy of GTA 5

Epic Games is notorious for giving you free games each month and this time they have a special one. GTA V Premium Edition is currently available for free but, there’s a problem… There was so much people trying to download it that the servers were completely down and you would simply get an error screen when you try to download it. It is running back now as my son just purchased it but if it isn’t working for you, the sale will go on until May 21st.

Apple to launch a new 10.8-inch iPad in 2020, iPad Mini to follow next year: Ming-Chi Kuo

We have a new report from Ming Chi Kuo with Apple’s roadmap for different products. He predicts that the Apple AR Glasses will launch some time in 2022, and they’ll be reliant on the iPhone to keep them slim and lightweight. They are expected to run Reality OS or rOS, and Apple is currently exploring touch panels, voice activation and gestures. Moving on to iPads he claims we will be getting two new iPad soon. A 10.8in iPad and a 8.5-9in iPad Mini for the second half of 2020 and the first half of 2021 respectively. These new iPads will follow on the iPhone SE product strategy with an affordable price tag and the adoption of newer, faster chips. On a previous note he also said that they are working on a miniLED iPad Mini which could be released later this year but it is not clear if this is the same one.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series may arrive with a 16GB RAM standard

We’re still a few months away but we’ve been getting a good amount of leaks for the Galaxy Note 20 line up. The same source from the previous leaks claims that one of the ways Samsung plans to differentiate the Note 20 from the S20 is with RAM. Apparently these could bring 16GB of RAM as a standard for both the Note 20 and the Note 20+. Currently, the only Galaxy S with 16GB of RAM, is the Ultra 5G with 512GB of storage. Samsung has been mass producing LPDDR5 RAM chips for mobile since February, and since the Ultra hasn’t sold too well, this might be a way of getting rid of the extra inventory. We are expecting both LTE and 5G variants so we don’t know yet if it will only be a standard on the 5G variants or on all of them. The source also claims that these are getting larger on-display ultra sonic fingerprint scanners from Qualcomm with an area 17x larger than before.

Story of the day:

New Google Pixel 4a could be more affordable than iPhone SE

And finally the hottest news today have to do with the gift that could keep on giving, the Google Piourse there can’t be no Pixel launch without the incredible amount of leaks. Now, we have the wallpapers for the 4a because, there’s nothing else to leak from the same source we had before. And if you want to, you can actually download these as the source uploaded them to a shareable folder so, we have them in the links in the description. All 16 of them. More importantly, all of the leaks hinted that the Pixel 4a would start at $339, like the iPhone SE but some new information claims that the Google Pixel 4a might undercut the iPhone SE by $50 or more, meaning that the 128GB Pixel 4a would cost $349 so there is a possibility that the 64GB variant could cost $299.
