Looks like the global semiconductor crunch has finally hit Apple. As per a report by Nikkei Asia, the production of some MacBooks and iPads has been delayed owing to the worldwide chip shortage that has put the automobile as well as consumer electronics industry under severe stress. As the demand has shot up and continues to outweigh the supply, Apple faces a tough task ahead as the company prepares a highly anticipated slate of products that includes redesigned Macs with in-house silicon, upgraded iPad Pro models with a new display technology, and of course, the upcoming iPhone 13 family.
As per the publication’s sources, the production of iPads has also been postponed due to the shortage of displays and display components. In MacBook’s production, the step of mounting the components on printed circuit boards just before the final assembly is being affected. Hence, Apple is now pushing back a part of its component orders for both products from the first half of this year to the second half.
However, it is unclear if the production delay concerns only iPad and Macbook models that are already on the shelves, or if the semiconductor shortage has also affected the production of the yet-to-be-launched models too. And even though the production of iPhones has not been hit, the report mentions that the supply of some components is ‘quite tight.’ As per a Bloomberg report from earlier this month, ‘the tightened supply of Qualcomm AP chips produced by TSMC is affecting everybody except Apple.’
Apple is known to have a solid supply chain control mechanism, and also commands a ‘priority client’ status. And that means it is among the few big brands with the luxury of a steady component supply while smaller names are hit by upheaval in the notoriously complex semiconductor industry. Foxconn, Apple’s key manufacturing partner, revealed earlier in March that its shipments will reduce by 10% due to the global chip shortage.
Industry sources believe that delays are a sign that the chip shortage is growing more serious, which could in turn, impact smaller tech firms even more adversely. So far, the production of iPhones has not been affected by the supply shortage. The report goes on to say that the component shortage remains a supply chain issue for Apple, but it hasn’t yet had an impact on product availability for consumers.
“We really don’t see an end to this shortage, and things could be even worse, looking ahead to the end of the June quarter, as some smaller tech players could run out of some critical inventories to build their products and need to scale back production,” said Wallace Gou, president and CEO of Silicon Motion, a NAND flash memory controller chip developer that supplies Samsung, Western Digital, Micron, Kingston and many others. If you’re looking for an in-depth take on the ongoing semiconductor crunch and how it is affecting everything from phones to cars, read this excellent Bloomberg explanation.

This seems like a bold statement, given that we are still waiting for Apple to give us mine LED displays on the upcoming iPad Pro and a possible MacBook Pro refresh. However, DigiTimes’ latest information claims that Apple won’t take that long to transition to new OLED displays.
It seems that we may get new iPad and MacBook devices with OLED displays as soon as next year. This isn’t the first time that we get information suggesting that Apple would adopt OLED displays on its future iPad Pro models since they started to pop up here and there during the final months of 2020. We can even track these rumors back to May 2019, when we received the first rumors claiming that the 16-inch MacBook Pro was going to feature OLED displays from Samsung.
As of today, Apple is still using LCD displays on both MacBooks and iPads, and we are still waiting for a possible Apple event that may deliver the first iPad Pro with a mini-LED display that’s supposed to help the tablet to give us improved brightness, and power management. Still, this new feature is said to be exclusive for the larger 12.9-inch variant, so it could be the perfect experiment to see if these new displays will also be good enough to come in the new 16-inch MacBook Pro refresh and the new rumored 14-inch MacBook Pro.
Who knows, maybe a future iPad Pro refresh will give us a mini-LED display on the smaller 11-inch iPad Pro, while the 12.9-inch variant makes the jump to OLED, and the same thing could happen with the MacBook Pro models. Now, that wouldn’t be the only improvement we may get, as it is believed that Apple will continue its transition to Apple Silicon, but only time will tell if these new upgrades arrive in 2022.

Apple has slapped a repairability score badge to iPhones and MacBook models listed on its official website in France, in compliance with a new law that asks companies (especially consumer electronics makers) to reveal the important score. As per rules drafted by France’s Ministere De La Transition Ecologique, the country is targeting a net repairability of 60% for all electronics and electric appliances sold in the country within the next five years. This rule is part of a broader environmental initiative that targets everything from a ban on single-use plastic and more effective recycling of e-waste to telling consumers how much their data usage and digital consumption is contributing to greenhouse gas emission.
Coming to the repairability score for Apple devices, it is shown as a green label towards the bottom right corner as you scroll down on the shop page. For example, as you can see in the image above, the iPhone 12 Pro has been awarded a repairability score of 6/10. You can find the complete list of iPhones and MacBook models for which repairability scores have been calculated and are now shown on the Apple website here.
Interestingly, the iPhone 11 has been given a repairability score of 4.6/10, while the older iPhone X sits above it with a repairability score of 4.8/10. The MacBook Pro (13-inch, A2338) stands at 5.6/10, while the MacBook Pro (16-inch, A2141) ranked significantly higher with a repairability score of 6.3/10. Apple’s support page says that these repairability scores have been created for the standard configuration of products to align with a French law that aims to reduce e-waste.
However, the process by which repairability index is awarded to a product can’t be called 100% non-biased, as certain parameters that go into calculating the final score are rated by manufacturers themselves. As per the official manual that details the whole process of calculating repairability index, it depends on factors such as availability of detailed and easy to understand documentation, ease (of disassembly, accessibility, tools, fasteners), availability of spare parts, pricing of spare parts, and certain product-specific criterion.
