Users reporting serious MacBook Pro problems after macOS Big Sur update

Last week we finally got the macOS Big Sur update but, which I was really looking forward to given the efficiencies, but according to several users, not everything has been sunshine and rainbows. Several users who own 2013 and mid-2014 13in MacBook Pros upgraded to Big Sur and it has reportedly bricked their machines. According to them, their computer is stuck on a black screen and there’s no way to bypass this this as, the hot key combinations for NVRAM, SMC, Safe Mode and Internet Recovery are inaccessible after they installed the update. Apparently some of these users have been asked to take the laptop in for servicing so, we’ll see what happens. Also keep in mind that these are the oldest MacBook Pros to have Big Sur available so if you’re on the list, you might want to hold off. Obviously gotta hand it to Apple for their in-store support, but the problem is that it’s crazy irregular right now given the pandemic.

Apple’s M1 chip is better than the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and Radeon RX 560 in Graphics performance

Speaking of Macs, let’s talk about the M1 Macs which I’m currently waiting on. They were supposed to arrive today, but I guess UPS was just playing with me. They keep going through Benchmarks, and according to a new submission, the M1 Macs just went up against the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and AMD’s Radeon RX 560. It was compared to these two to match Apple’s claim of the M1’s GPU handling close to 25k threads and delivering 2.6 TFLOPS. Well, in most tests, the M1 beats both of these graphic cards while reaching up to 300 FPS in some instances. Some of the results are pretty close like in the first Aztec Ruins Setting where it actually lost to the Radeon. But then you get other cases where it just breezes through, like in Manhattan 3.1. Now, we know that these are older GPUs but, they are desktop GPUSs as well. That said, the reason why this is not the hottest news is because the benchmark tests are designed more for mobile than anything, so we’ll take them with a grain of salt.

OnePlus 9 Pro’s alleged Geekbench listing reveals SD 875 SoC

Possible design of the new OnePlus 9 has been leaked

Let’s move on to OnePlus as, we’ve already gotten the OnePlus 8 and the 8T, which means rumors for the 9 should start coming in. For starters, the Pro variant was reportedly just spotted on Geekbench revealing some new details. According to the listing, it will pack the upcoming Snapdragon 875, or whatever it will be called, and it performed pretty well in both single core and multi-core. Now, not much of the specs have been revealed, but some things we’re expecting include a Flat AMOLED Display with up to 144Hz refresh rate, and a battery that supports 65W charging. Speaking of the display, we also have some CAD renders of the device and, they’re… something. These apparently belong to the regular OnePlus 9 and it packs a flat display with a small punch hole at the top left and a near bezel-less experience. On the back, you get a triple camera array that kinda looks like if the iPhone 12 and the Galaxy S20 FE had a baby. According to these renders we’re getting a new white color variant that actually looks pretty cool. We’re expecting these phones to come out some time in March so, everything should just intensify from here.

Samsung Galaxy S21 specs and features have been leaked

Now let’s talk about the Samsung Galaxy S21 Series as we have possibly the biggest leak yet for it, and it’s both good and bad. There’s a full list of specs for the entire line up from Android Police that reveal.. Pretty much everything. Just to get it out of the way, all of these will pack the Snapdragon 875 or the Exynos 2100, as well as 5G, and One UI 3.1 based on Android 11. Alright, starting with the regular Galaxy S21, we’re looking at a 6.2in FHD+, LTPS display running at 120Hz. You’re also getting a 4000 mAh battery and a triple camera setup which consists of a 12MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra wide and a 64MP telephoto. Moving on to the S21+, you’re getting a 6.7in FHD+, LTPS display running at 120Hz, as well as a 4800 mAh battery and the same camera setup as the smaller variant. But finally, moving on to the Ultra, we have a 6.8in WQHD+, LTPO display running at up 120Hz. Here, you’re getting a 5000 mAh battery and a 5 camera array that consists of a main 108MP sensor, a 12MP ultra wide, a 10MP 3X Optical lens, and a 10MP 10X optical lens. The color variants include Phantom Violet, Pink, Grey, White, Black and Silver, and they vary depending on which variant you pick. Ice Universe also says that the Ultra packs the strongest optical system known to date when it comes to the telephoto, with both sensors being 1/2.8in and 1.22μm. We’re getting closer to that January or February launch so, we’ll see what we get but so far so good.

Story of the day:

Samsung could kill off the Galaxy Note series in 2021

And finally the hottest news today have to do with Samsung again, but this time because we have some confirmation of the beginning of the end. For years, there’s been tons of rumors that Samsung might get rid of the Note line and stick to the S Line and now with the Z Fold line, it makes a ton more sense. Well, we’ve learned from interviews with company executives that, a smartphone can be ready pretty much 9 months before the actual launch and, the problem is, the Note is currently nowhere to be found. We have a new tweet from Max Weinbach where he gives a detailed list of the Samsung flagships we’ll be getting next year. The list includes, the Galaxy S21 FE, the S21, S21+, S21 Ultra, the Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3 and the Z Fold FE. Nice. Now, where it gets interesting is when he tweeted out that 3 of these devices will have S Pen support, and there’s no Note on that list. A day earlier, Ice Universe tweeted “an unusual clue: there is currently no information on the development of the Note 21 Series”. Of course, we are still far away from the Note’s usual launch frame but, by this point we usually have the codenames at least, and having tipsters saying there’s no information at all on the development is kind of a huge deal. By the looks of it, unless Samsung figures out how to bring the Stylus to the Folds, it looks like the S line might bring the S Pen next year.

Users reporting serious MacBook Pro problems after macOS Big Sur update

It seems that being an early macOS Big Sur adopter has brought terrible consequences to several Apple users. Several reports claim that the latest macOS software update is bricking their MacBook Pros, and complaints can be found on several sites, including Reddit and Apple Support Communities.

You may want to wait a bit longer before you decide to upgrade your Mac to the latest macOS Big Sur. Several users who own late 2013 and mid-2014 13-inch MacBook Pro units are reporting that the update has bricked their machines. There are several threads found in MacRumors, Reddit, and Apple Support Communities, which means that this issue is very common.

“I saw that there was an update to Big Sur today so clicked update. It all downloaded fine and I clicked all the items to go ahead. It said it’d be a while so i stepped away from the computer. When i returned the screen was black – no status bar, no nothing, but I could tell the LED was on. Nothing would wake it up so I eventually held the power button to force a shutdown.
“Now it won’t boot.
Tried SMC, PRAM, holding shift, option keys, recovery mode etc etc. Tried all many many times.”

“A word of caution about updating to Big Sur… It seems to have bricked my mid-2014 13” MBP. I’ve found others online with the same problem, and they seem to all be mid-2014 13” models.
“I’m getting a black screen with backlight when I power on, can’t enter recovery mode, no startup sound, nothing. Not impressed at all. Apple support tried getting me to reset the PRAM, SMC, etc., and when that didn’t work, they asked me to take it for in-person servicing.”

Users claim that their devices are now stuck displaying a black screen, and there is no way yo bypass the static black screen, as key reset combinations including NVRAM, SMC, Safe Mode and Internet Recovery are all inaccessible after trying to install the update. The most affected 13-inch MacBook Pro models are the ones from late 2013 and mid 2014, but that doesn’t mean that other models haven’t been affected by this situation.

We also have to understand that these are the oldest MacBook Pro models supported by the macOS update, so we could say that a couple of issues may have been expected. Whatever the case, the problem has already reached Apple’s engineering team, so Cupertino should now be aware of the situation. Some of the users have already been told by Apple support to bring their devices in for repair.

New macOS Big Sur is finally ready for your Mac

Apple announced its new macOS Big Sur back in June, and since then, it has been evolving until its final version, which has just been released today. The new OS comes with a new design and new apps, including the Messages updates that we saw in iOS 14, but that’s not everything we are getting.

The new macOS Big Sur includes depth shading and translucency, reducing visual complexity to focus on content and new symbols. Further, the buttons only appear when you need them and hide when you don’t. We also get a new unified space for notifications and widgets and new sounds and consistency between iOS and macOS icons.

Apple has also added a redesigned photo picker to make sharing pictures and videos easier. It allows users to create Memoji on a Mac and introduces message effects such as balloons and confetti. Users will also have the ability to pin conversations that are synced across all devices. The Map app has also received a new design and several new features, which let users create a custom guide for specific landmarks, see a 360-degree image of any place with Look Around, and check indoor maps for places like shopping malls and airports.

Apple is also introducing changes to Safari to make it faster and more battery efficient, and we also get a new start page that can be customized with wallpapers. Photos is getting a better Retouch tool, and the Apple Music For You section has now been replaced by the Listen Now section. However, there are things you have to consider before upgrading. Some important apps like Final Cut haven’t been updated to work with macOS Big Sur, so proceed with caution.

Now, Microsoft has released a new version of its Mac Office 2019 software, including support for macOS Big Sir and compatibility with Apple Silicon devices.
“The first launch of each Office app will take longer as the operating system has to generate optimized code for the ‌Apple Silicon‌ processor. Users will notice that the apps’ bounce’ in the dock for approximately 20 seconds while this process completes. Subsequent app launches will be fast.”

Microsoft is also advising its users to install the November 2020 release (build 16.43), or later, which includes the latest optimizations for macOS 11 Big Sur, which wouldn’t be a problem considering that the new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini are expected to arrive on November 17. Still, there’s evidence from UPS showing that some of these MacBook Air orders are already ‘in transit’, meaning that they could arrive sooner.

Apple will release macOS Big Sur on Nov 12

Apart from launching new hardware at its ‘One More Thing’ event, Apple also announced the release date of its next macOS that was first unveiled at WWDC 2020 in June. Since then, Apple has pushed beta updates to the OS but now, we finally have a date for the release of the stable update. Apple is releasing macOS Big Sur on November 12, that is, tomorrow.

The new OS brings depth shading and translucency, reduced visual complexity to keep the focus on content. Moreover, Finder has a new top to bottom design and Photos has the same design as on iPadOS. It’s backed by Metal so it has smooth navigation and graphics. Further, iWork also has a simplified toolbar. The buttons now only appear when you need them and recede when you don’t. Apple has also unified space for notifications and widgets in macOS Big Sur.

Apple has added new sounds, and consistency on icons between iOS and macOS. The menu bar at the top is now translucent and takes the color of the app. It comes with new toolbar icons. And finally, Control Center has an icon at the top right. Notifications center is now re-done and matched with widgets as well.

Apple’s macOS Big Sur has been designed to maximize M1. With the new processor, apps launch nearly instantaneously, and the computer instantly wakes from sleep. The OS is now 2x more responsive because of Apple’s unified memory architecture. Plus, it gives access to more graphics performance than ever. With advanced power management, which intelligently allocates apps on the core that requires them, it allows quiet performance and even better battery life.

Apple will be releasing macOS Big Sur for iMac (2014 or later), iMac Pro, Mac Pro (2013 and later), Mac mini (2014 and later), MacBook Air (2013 and later), MacBook Pro (Late 2013 and later), and MacBook (2015 and later).

How macOS Big Sur supports and pushes the Apple M1 Silicon

At the ‘One More Thing’ event today, Apple announced its in-house ARM chip for Macs. It comes with a unified memory architecture, and is built on the 5nm process. The processor sports four high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores. Apple says that it has the best performance per watt. With the new M1 chip comes a new GPU with eight cores that has 128 execution units. The company claims it is the world’s fastest integrated graphics.

Other components of the M1 chip include Thunderbolt 4 and Gen 4 PCIe support, a high-efficiency audio processor, a performance controller, an advanced display engine, a cryptography accelerator, and more.

But what is all of this power when it doesn’t translate to real-world performance? Hence, Apple’s macOS Big Sur has been designed to maximize M1. With the new processor, apps launch nearly instantaneously, and the computer instantly wakes from sleep. The OS is now 2x more responsive all because of Apple’s unified memory architecture. Plus, it gives access to more graphics performance than ever.

With advanced power management, which intelligently allocates apps on the core that requires them, it allows quiet performance and even better battery life. Apple claims that it delivers “the best ever battery life on a MacBook Air to date.”

As for the software performance, Logic Pro is can run run up to 3x more plugins. Further, Final Cut Pro X can now render a timeline 6x faster. Right now, almost all Apple apps are compatible with the new chip. The support for Adobe Photoshop is coming early next year, while Lightroom is getting the upgrade next month. What’s even better? You can now run your favorite iPhone and iPad apps on your Mac.

Mac users will need T2 security chip to stream Netflix in 4K

With macOS Big Sur, Mac users will be able to stream Netflix in 4K HDR on their computer. However, there is a catch. To stream 4K content one needs a 4K-capable display, right? No. According to the latest development, you’ll need a Mac with T2 security chip to stream Netflix in 4K HDR with macOS Big Sur.

In a support document spotted by Apple Terminal (via 9to5Mac), Netflix was found stating that you’ll need a computer with a T2 Security chip to stream in 4K. This translates to a lot of Macs missing out on the upcoming feature. Theoretically, older iMacs and pre-2018 Mac laptops can play 4K content but they’ll miss out on streaming Netflix in 4K due to the lack of T2 security chip.

For reference, hese are the Macs the pack a T2 security chip: 2018 or later MacBook Pro, 2018 or later MacBook Air, 2018 Mac mini, 2019 Mac Pro, iMac Pro and 2020 iMac. You can further find out if your Mac has the required chip by following the steps Apple details on its website.

According to The Verge, the T2 security chip requirement could have something to do with its ability to process HEVC encoded videos. The iMac webpage (via Engadget) says the coprocessor can transcode HEVC video up to twice as fast as its previous generation T1 chip. Hence, if Netflix is encoding streams using HEVC then the requirement is justified.

Apart from the T2 security chip, to stream Netflix in 4K, you’ll need macOS Big Sur alongside Netflix’s $16 per month Premium subscription. Moreover, you’ll need to browse Netflix through Safari because other browsers will limit the stream to 720p on a Mac.

Macs could borrow this iPhone and iPad feature soon

Mac could soon borrow the iPhone and iPad’s Face ID feature, which allows users to unlock the device through advanced facial recognition. The information comes from 9To5Mac that found references to the TrueDepth camera on macOS Big Sur. It suggests that Apple is looking forward to bringing the facial recognition feature to its computers.

Apple uses “PearlCamera” codename for the TrueDepth camera and Face ID. The publication found a new extension on macOS Big Sur beta 3 with codes like “FaceDetect” and “BioCapture” that are intended to support PearlCamera. It confirms that Apple is preparing macOS to operate with Face ID.

The report goes on to say that the implementation is still in the early stages. Hence, it might take some time before Apple announces a new Mac model with the TrueDepth camera to support Face ID. We are yet to know about how Face ID will work on the Mac, but it is likely to operate in the same way as on iPhone and iPad

Apple will allow you to port Chrome extensions to Safari

Apple detailed macOS Big Sur earlier this week when it took the virtual stage for WWDC 2020. The company talked about how it had redesigned the next OS to look more modern. It also announced some enhancements to Safari. However, it detailed the new WebExtensions API at a WWDC session, which was spotted by TechCrunch.

Apple’s new tools will allow developers to take their existing Chrome, Firefox or Edge extensions and port them to Safari using a converter the company has created to speed up to process. It means developers will not have to learn Objective-C or Swift, which are of limited use outside of Apple’s ecosystem. Like other Safari plug-ins, the new web-based ones will be available for download through the App Store.

Moreover, Apple will notify users of the privacy risks as some extensions ask for multiple permissions before they run. Therefore, before you activate an extension, you’ll be able to restrict it on either only some websites or a single active tab. You will also be allowed to limit how long an extension runs to a single day.

Safari 14 brings Face ID and Touch ID support for web sign-ins

The latest iteration of Apple’s in-house browser – Safari 14 – adds support for Face ID and Touch ID for website log-ins. What this means is you no longer have to rely on password managers, or remember a complex combination of username and password to access a service on the web.

“Added a Web Authentication platform authenticator using Face ID or Touch ID, depending on which capability is present,” Apple mentions in the beta release notes of Safari 14 for iOS 14 and macOS 11 aka Big Sur. This will be facilitated by the new Web Authentication API that arrives with Safari.

Once it goes live, you can log-in to websites using your biometric signature via iPhones, iPads, or a Mac that comes with either a Face ID or Touch ID module. To check out the technical details as to how it will be implemented in Safari 14, head over to Apple’s developer website where WebKit Engineer Jiewen Tan explains it in detail.

Apple’s Home and tvOS are also getting interesting new features

Alright guys, this was going to be a longer video, but it became too long that there are certain things I had to leave out. For example Home updates like logical light diming and cameras now having facial recognition is awesome. TvOS now having picture in picture while you work out and even AirPlay support in 4K is also cool. Heck even Privacy updates giving you a card like nutrition facts, also epic.. But I can’t go into all of this in detail. The description is full of links with everything. Let’s start with one of my favorites which is actually getting AirPods that are getting smarter than they already were. They now switch automatically between your devices, showing a seamless move without you having to do it manually anymore. If you get a phone call, your audio will switch to whatever device you’re taking the call from. There’s also a new spatial audio feature which aims to recreate an authentic surround experience. It does it by using advanced spacial audio algorithms specifically on the AirPods Pro and it works even if you’re only wearing one ear bud. It tracks if your head or your device moves so the audio moves with you. It’ll work with Dolby 5.1, 7.1 and even Dolby Atmos.

Here are all the changes to Apple Watch in WatchOS 7

Now, let’s move on to WatchOS which is getting some very needed updates. According to Apple there’s now over 20K apps on the App Store and there’s finally a way to actually use them more with Complications. For example, if you’re a runner, you can create a full runner watch face with different apps that focus on running and they interact with your Watch Face. You can share these Watch Faces and download third party ones, even from Safari. The WorkOut app is getting some new modes, including Dancing, Core Training, Cool Down, Fundamentals and more. The Maps now bring you cycling directions and suggestions including new shortcuts like take the stairs and it even let’s you know if you have to carry your bike inside where you’re going. The Activity app was renamed to Fitness, and Sleep Tracking is finally here. It let’s you set a time to wind down, go to bed and then choose a soothing alarm or vibrations. It tracks your heart rate and breathing patterns while you sleep and there’s a detailed sleep schedule and tracking app in the new iOS.

Here’s everything we saw today during Apple’s WWDC 2020

Now, even if I would consider iOS 14 to be the hottest news, it is so connected with everything else, that I have to talk about it now. And yeah, I told you calling it iPhoneOS made no sense. It now gets some inspiration from Apple Watch apps and complications to create widgets. You can either have them on the Today view or as part of your home screen. Oh and that Home screen is changing, sort of. Now there’s an App Library that automatically organizes your apps with simple ways to navigate, so no more of those crazy lists of pages unless you want them, and there’s even an easy way to get rid of them, and even sort apps alphabetically, like finally. Picture in Picture finally makes it as well, with ways to resize or throw the video in the background when you need it. Phone calls and even Siri now don’t take up the entire screen and there’s even a new translations app for up to 11 languages. Other apps like Messages now look more like whatsapp for Groups, the App Store now gets clips for easier app discovery through searches and NFC, and don’t worry I won’t bore you with Apple Maps. The one I care about more is Car Play which now has enhanced options for EVs and even a car key feature that’s coming to 2021 models like the new BMW 5 series coming later this year. I’m really excited about iOS 14. More details on the update in the links in the description.

iPadOS 14 brings a universal search bar and a useful sidebar

Now, even if we thought iPadOS , was more of a blend between new iOS 14 features and some enhancements focused on iPad, it’s getting a whole lot better than we thought. Apple plans to achieve this by making more apps that are specifically catered to the iPad. And yeah, the widgets from iOS 14 are also making it here but probably the biggest change is the new sidebar UI. It works with most apps like Photos, Notes and Files and as an example, if you’re in the Photos app, your photos remain in the center of the display while the sidebar let’s you organize them. You can drag and drop a photo into the sidebar and move it into a different category. This feature basically makes apps like Files on an iPad way better and more logical to use. Moving on to Siri, it won’t take all of the screen now along with calls, which will also be presented in cards at the top, letting you answer or swipe to dismiss. iPadOS also getting a new Universal Search feature, which kind of works like Spotlight Search for the Mac where it even serves for web searches. Finally, the Apple Pencil also got some major changes where Apple wants to make handwriting as powerful as typed text. You can now scribble something and get text and it works the same with shapes. You can also select handwritten text and the neural engine will detect if it’s a drawing or text and it’ll allow you to change color and even copy and paste it.

macOS Big Sur: What’s new?

Alright, let’s say hello to MacOS Big Sur, and guys if you’ve never been to Big Sur, add it to your bucket list. There’s a beautiful marathon that happens there every year. Thing is, it looks like macOS, but the hottest news today is all about how it’s not. Visually though there are a ton of design improvements that make it more cohesive with iOS and iPadOS. Apple has a new designer, we get new symbols, depth shading and translucency, and reduced visual complexity for you to focus on work. Buttons are now enhanced only when you call on them, and now we get new sounds. A major change comes to the task bar wich now has specific buttons for Notifications Center and also control center, more like what you see with Samsung DeX. Oh and those same updates to Messages and Apple Maps come to macOS thanks to Mac Catalyst, which makes it easy to port iPad apps to macOS. Safari also saw a major overhaul with Apple now claiming 50% faster speeds than Chrome, a new UI for Safari Extensions, a Customizable start page, Tab UI updates, Seemless translation and more. But guys this is nothing compared to what’s next.

Story of the day:

It’s official. Apple is moving to custom silicon for Macs starting this year

And finally for the hottest news today, let’s talk Apple Silicone. Like wow, All the demos shown today were on a Mac running on the same A12Z processor found in the new iPad Pro. People have praised Apple for their chips for years, but today was the ultimate test as we saw even Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Apps like Lightroom and Photoshop, and also Microsoft Office, running seamlessly on an ARM based chip. This will be a two year transition where Apple even clarified that we will continue to see Intel-based Macs, the thing is we don’t know for how long, but we should see the first ARM-based Mac along side in the fall. To not create a development nightmare Apple created Universal 2, Rosetta 2 and Virtualization options to allow developers to easily create an app that runs both on Apple Silicon and Intel chips. There’s even a special Mac Mini running the A12Z shipping to developers this week to help them port apps. Guys we even saw iPhone apps running natively on a Mac without a hickup, opening a door to any App Store app to run on the Mac, and we’re even wondering what’s there to hold iPads from running MacOS, like seriously
