Netflix will help you find something to watch with its new Shuffle Play feature

Are you tired of spending more time choosing what to watch than actually watching something? Well, Netflix is testing a new feature called ‘Shuffle Play’, which could allow you to find something to watch if you don’t know what to stream with all the overwhelming options around you. The Shuffle Play button is located right on the profile screen.

The information comes from a number of users who posted a screenshot of the new feature online. Further, TechCrunch has confirmed the development. The new option seems to be useful for some users while others find it confusing as you can see from the tweets below.

Netflix told TechCrunch that the idea behind the feature is to help its members quickly and easily find content that’s tailored to their tastes. However, it is currently only in the test phase that is still underway.

Netflix finally adds Hindi language support to woo the Indian audience

Netflix is hard at work to win the Indian market, from making original shows with A-list stars to launching India-specific affordable membership plans, the company is trying it all. In a bid to further woo the Indian audience, Netflix has finally added Hindi language support to its desktop client as well as the mobile app. Here’s how the Netflix UI looks when the language is changed to Hindi:

Now, UI elements such as show description, the menu bar and the settings section can all be changed to Hindi language, making it easier for the Hindi speaking audience (over 300 million native speakers) to read about content in their first language. Moreover, irrespective of their current location, users across the globe can change the language to Hindi.

“Delivering a great Netflix experience is as important to us as creating great content. We believe the new user interface will make Netflix even more accessible and better suit members who prefer Hindi,” Monika Shergill, VP Content at Netflix India, was quoted as saying by TechCrunch.

Netflix users can now control the playback speed on its Android app

It's only fair to share...Share on RedditShare on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

Netflix began testing the ability to control playback speed on its platform back in October last year. Today, Netflix has announced that users can now speed up or slow down the playback speed on its Android app. This new feature is rolling out to users starting today on the mobile app for Android, and will soon arrive on the iOS app and the web version as well.

Talking about the playback controls, users can choose between slower (0.5X or 0.75X) or faster (1.25X and 1.5X) options for video playback on their phone or tablet, and soon, on any screen of their choice. The playback control button appears in the bottom left corner of the screen while watching content.

Once users tap on it, a window will pop up that will let them choose between 0.5x, 0.75x, 1x (Normal), 1.25x and 1.5x playback speed options. However, the playback speed will revert back to normal every time users start watching a new movie or TV show, indicating that there might not be an option to set a default playback speed that applies to all content from the get-go.

Netflix is testing Rs 349 ‘Mobile+’ plan with HD video in India

Nextflix offers a range of plans for its users but there is a gap between Rs 199 “Mobile” and Rs 499 “Basic” plans. It seems like the streaming service is looking to bridge the gap between the two low end plans by introducing a new one. The company is said to be testing a new Rs 349 (~ $4.65) monthly “Mobile+” plan in India .

The new Netflix Mobile+ plan is said to offer high-definition (HD) video and access on computers — including PC, Mac, and Chromebook — as opposed to the standard-definition (SD) video restrictions of Mobile and Basic. However, you can’t watch content on TV or on simultaneous screens.

In a statement to Gadgets 360, Netflix said, “We launched the Mobile plan in India to make it easier for anyone with a smartphone to enjoy Netflix. We want to see if members like the added choice [the Mobile+ plan] brings. We will only roll it out long-term if they do.”

Google’s Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max finally bring support for Netflix

Google’s Nest Hub line of smart displays has just received a new feature that many users have long been demanding. We’re talking about Netflix support here. Yes, so far, you could enjoy content mainly from what you get on YouTube when it comes to the Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max. Now, all you’ve to do is say the magic words “Hey Google, play Stranger Things,” and you’re good to go.

“Netflix is rolling out on Nest smart displays globally wherever the service and Nest devices are currently available. If you have a Netflix subscription, simply link your account in the Google Home or Assistant app and you can play Netflix movies, TV shows and documentaries by using your voice”, read the official blog post.

You can control playback with both touch inputs, voice commands, as well as quick gestures such as standing in front of the camera and raising your hand to pause or resume. Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max have also added support for Peacock to the list of streaming services such as Disney+ and HBO Max that you can cast via your smartphone.

Netflix will cancel the subscription of accounts that are long dormant

It often happens that you subscribe to a service, use it for a bit, and then eventually forget about it. Some folks (read: very rich people) do this with Netflix, but in what appears to be a goodwill gesture, Netflix will deactivate the subscription of accounts whose users have been paying for it but haven’t used the service for quite some time. How long exactly?

New subscribers who haven’t watched anything in the past one year or old customers whose account activity has been zero for two years are subject to qualifying as dormant accounts. In such cases, Netflix will send an email to the owners, asking if they want to continue paying for the service.

If they don’t reply, Netflix will cancel their subscription. And for those who get their subscription canceled and rejoin within 10 months, they’ll find their favorites, profiles, and viewing preferences intact. However, Netflix says “only a few hundred thousand” accounts are collecting dust and they are already factored in the company’s financial guidance.

Netflix video quality will return to normal after COVID-19 measures

Video streaming services such as Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon were forced to reduce their bitrates in several European countries back in March as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This measure was taken to reduce the load on ISPs and to cope with the millions of users were consuming tons of content while in lockdown. However, it seems that streaming services are starting to return to their normal HD quality in some European countries.

According to the FlatpanelsHD, Netflix is starting to give its customers normal HD quality in several European countries. Users from Denmark, Norway, Germany, and more countries have been posting on forums that their streaming quality has been restored. A Netflix spokesperson said:

“Please note, we are working with ISPs to help increase capacity. In the last month alone, we have added four times the normal capacity. As conditions improve, we will lift these limitations.”

Now, we have to wait for other companies to start working as they did, while the world slowly returns to normal.
