Is there still a market for a new Nexus 7?

One of the more disappointing aspects of Google’s lineup of devices of late has been the lack of seven inch representation. The Nexus 7 was, at the time, one of the best devices that Google introduced, from screen size to price point to specifications. The Nexus 7 has since grown old, with nary a replacement to be seen. The Nexus 9 came around, which in my experience was just fine until Marshmallow came along and hit it in the face with a frying pan. I suppose individual results will vary, but my Nexus 9 continually disappoints me, and I find myself longing for a replacement. But I ...

European retailers already selling LTE-enabled 2013 Nexus 7

It’s been a little over a month by now since Google first announced the new 2013 version of its Nexus 7 tablet. We’ve seen sales of the tablet begin, and have generally been pleased with the hardware. However, we still haven’t seen the complete new Nexus 7 picture, as Google has yet to get the ball rolling with sales of the LTE-enabled Nexus 7 – so far, it’s only been pushing the WiFi model. Back at launchtime, Google indicated that the LTE Nexus 7 would become available in a few weeks – so where is it? ...

LG Nexus 5 rumors describe design differences from G2

Somebody’s making a new Nexus smartphone, but who? After a recent rumor threw Motorola’s name back in the running, we’re back to mainly focusing on the idea of an LG Nexus 5. Some rumors from earlier this week talked about some downgrades the phone would see from LG’s G2, like running a Snapdragon 600 instead of the G2′s 800. This morning, however, the latest batch of rumors to arrive claims ...

New Nexus 7 running up against multi-touch, GPS glitches

This year’s Nexus 7, though a fantastic tablet by many accounts, hasn’t arrived without it’s share of hiccups. First there was that business about Google Wallet incompatibility, and last week we heard about the AOSP mess that was driving Jean-Baptiste Quéru to abandon his role. Now we’re learning about two more issues ...

Pocketnow Weekly 056: two hours of your tech questions, answered

Sometimes, you push obligations back for too long and they just pile up, week after week after week, until they never get done. Is Qualcomm hurting the Nexus project? AOSP’s Jean-Baptiste Quéru driven to quit

Remember back when the Nexus 4′s factory image disappeared from the AOSP shortly after the phone launched? Speculation was quick to suggest that Google was killing the phone’s hidden LTE radio, but when it reappeared months later, unchanged files suggested that wasn’t the case at all, and the mystery remained. Now a similar saga is playing out for the new Nexus 7, and it’s frustrating an AOSP heavyweight to no end. Android ...

Top five games for your new Nexus 7 (Video)

The new Nexus 7, undoubtedly, is the best bang for your buck in the small tablet market. It has the best display, lowest price tag, and offers great performance. Unfortunately, it isn’t compatible with all apps and games. There are quite a few titles that have not been updated for Android 4.3 or are poorly ...

Nexus 7 (2013) review: the best small tablet money can buy

Google and ASUS disrupted the tablet realm last year at Google I/O. The duo teamed up after some talks at CES 2012, and ASUS practically re-worked the MeMO ME171 tablet it announced at the January trade show to create the Nexus 7, a rather affordable tablet with only a few compromises. The Nexus 7 was the best bang for your buck, by a wide margin. Fast forward one year, and the tech world was eagerly awaiting what this pairing could produce once again. Last week, Google held a one-off event where it announced the new Nexus 7. ...

New Nexus 7 vs iPad mini (Video)

Apple is still, by and large, the leader of the tablet space. Its tablets far outsell any of the competitors’ and generally turn a higher profit margin for the company. The iPad mini, however, is a different story. Its specifications aren’t … great, and Apple took a hit on profit margins to make the tablet. Still, the tablet has done quite well, helping Apple dominate the smaller side of the tablet realm, as well. However, Google and ASUS, who teamed up to make last year’s wildly popular (at least among ...

Pocketnow Weekly 055: Moto X hopes, LG G2 dreams, Lumia 1020 fears

We’re on the eve of the launch of a most significant (if not spec-packed) smartphone, the Moto X. We’re hot on the heels of the industry’s latest benchmark-juicing scandal with Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 tweaking. We’re only a week away from seeing what LG has to offer with its G2 (though we already know what accessories it’s launching with). And we’re not even a week out from the launch of the Nokia Lumia 1020, but we’re already in full-on fretting mode about our favorite Finns. That roster would be enough to fuel two podcast episodes this size, ...

Google missed one thing with the new Nexus 7

When rumors started to surface about the new Nexus 7 – as opposed to the old Nexus 7 I suppose (what are they going to call it next year?) – I was disappointed. Google was delivering on so much including a fast processor, plenty of RAM, LTE, and a whole bunch of jiggly goodness. But one part of the rumor’s felt sour to me – $229. Two hundred and twenty nine dollars. It just felt….off. Last year, Google introduced their first generation Nexus 7 at the sub-200 dollar price point. This is not a small thing. Please don’t misunderstand. I’m not quibbling ...

New Nexus 7 vs original Nexus 7 (Video)

The successor to the original Nexus 7 may have been one of the most highly-anticipated devices for tablet lovers this year. Last year’s 7-inch Nexus was a bargain, and this year’s could only be better, right? Google announced it last week, in all its affordable, compact glory. And it seems Google and ASUS had their ears to the ground, listening to the complaints from users about the original model. Did they get this year’s Nexus 7 right? Is it ...

With a Nexus 7 out there, why would anyone buy a Galaxy Tab?

I know: that’s a bait-y headline that begs for qualifiers, and we’ll get to those in just a second. Before that, though, I’d like to apologize to those who’ve been waiting for our full review of the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0. For those of you who’ve gotten lost in the avalanche of news since we took delivery on our own Tab 3 8.0 review unit, we unboxed the device a few weeks back – and then we immediately put it up against its closest Samsung-branded competitor, the ...

The best ways to wirelessly charge your new Nexus 7

Wireless charging is still a hit-or-miss feature with mobile users. Not everyone cares for it or sees the point. But those who do love the ability to drop your phone on a mat and let it charge without the hassle of cables. The Nexus 7 announcement last week also came with a tiny surprise for wireless charging sympathizers. The 7-inch, affordable tablet comes with the Qi standard for wireless charging built into its thin frame. But there’s a problem: not a lot of ...

The new Nexus 7 is finally a true iPad competitor

Up until this year, it was hard to be a tablet manufacturer if the company wasn’t Apple. Before 2010, nobody knew what it was like to have a tablet (that was not an expensive Microsoft computer obviously), and still, the iPad took the market by storm, and a storm that lasted almost four years. Why just four years? Well, if you learned about Apple’s quarter results a couple of days ago, you learned that for the first time ever, they sold less iPads this year than they sold last year. That’s not good considering that last year there were only two iPad options, and now there ...
