HTC One Max Lollipop update starts rolling out in some regions

A leaked document, back on January, disclosed HTC’s plans for updating some of its devices to Android 5.0 Lollipop. While the One Mini 2 (aka One M8 Mini) was on the list, the company decided to cancel its Lollipop plans in order to maintain the required user experience. However, the HTC One Max was thankfully not removed because of the same reasons, as the ...

Leaked Lollipop plans let us know when to expect updates for HTC models

Now that we’ve got the One M8 update out of the way – at least for unlocked models, that is – it’s time to look over the rest of HTC’s smartphone portfolio and check out when the juicy goodness of Android 5.0 will grace the models in question. A source out of Vietnam has posted what looks to be a legitimate look at the various HTC Lollipop update plans for a variety of the company’s models, including the ...

HTC, what ever happened to the ‘less is more’ mentality?

The last few years have not been the best for HTC. Its market share, revenues, and profits have all been sliding while its largest competitor, Samsung, has been raking in more sales, profits, and the like. Such has been the case for most smartphone manufacturers (who are not Apple and Samsung, of course), but HTC’s journey, in particular, makes for an interesting story. Despite its several fumbles and missteps since 2011, it still has a massive, die-hard following around its smartphones. Whether it’s due to the elegant hardware and design, ultra high standards in build quality, ...

Sense 6.0 update schedule leaked for existing HTC Androids

Tomorrow, we’re looking forward to Sense 6.0 debuting on the all new HTC One; for something that’s not yet official, that news is all but certain. OK, but what does Sense 6.0′s arrival mean for all the other HTC hardware? What existing devices might be getting Sense 6.0 by means of future updates – and then, when might we hope to see those updates arrive? Well, apparently HTC’s current problem with leaks extends far beyond the new One itself, and the latest ...

HTC Desire 816 vs One, One Max, and One Mini: hands-on comparison (Video)

All done getting introduced to HTC’s new Desire 816 thanks to our hands-on video? All right, then: you’re all set to see how the 816 measures-up to HTC’s flagship One series, and we laid them all out at MWC 2014 to give you a proper sense of scale. Make no mistake: just because the Desires may be more budget-focused devices doesn’t mean that the Ones will dwarf the 816. This guy is still a phablet, after all. And while it may not have the sleek metal design of the Ones, its straightforward, ...

Nokia wins against HTC in Germany, One-line-up not affected by patent ruling

A German court sided with Nokia on Friday, in a patent-related lawsuit against HTC, and has found eight-out-of-nine of the Taiwan-made Android phones to be infringing. The patent in case is EP1246071, which refers to a “method of configuring electronic devices” (specifically helping computers decide which drivers to use upon USB-plugging-in the device). Nokia has scored a recent win in the UK too against HTC, when the One mini could have been ...

HTC One max extended battery case hands-on

After you’ve made your decision and have picked up your very own smartphone, phablet, or tablet, you’re going to want to pick up a couple accessories. First off you’ll want a case, next you’ll want some way to charge it while you’re on the go. Cases come in all shapes and sizes, but your recharging options usually require a power outlet of some sort, whether it’s in the wall or in your car. What if you could combine the two? That’s the idea behind HTC’s extended battery case, the HTC Power Flip Case for the

What to expect from HTC in 2014

Few will dispute that HTC makes great hardware – or even great devices. In fact, over the last five years, HTC has managed to make some of the most compelling mobile handsets the market has ever seen, with a handful of firsts to boot. It made the first consumer Android smartphone, the first WiMAX and LTE smartphones, the first phone with a 3D camera, the first 4.3-inch smartphone, and even the first ever Google Nexus device, the famed Nexus One. HTC has had its moments over the years, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed. While many have defected, there are still hordes of die-hard HTC ...

The biggest disappointments in 2013

We’re slowly leaving another year behind us, and what a year 2013 was! We couldn’t have asked for more, yet, we’re excitedly looking forward to seeing what 2014 will bring, and we know it’s going to be even better. Smartphones, tablets, phablets, curved screens, convertibles, fingerprint readers, acquisitions, companies rising, falling, and I’ve just realized I could fill the entire page with keywords descriptive for 2013. It’s a Pocketnow tradition to look back, every year end, at what happened, good or bad, and, of course, forward, to what we think we ...

How to get the best features of KitKat on your older phone without voiding your warranty

Every time a new version of Android comes out it’s only natural that people will want to run it on their Android-powered device — even if it’s not a Nexus. Nexus devices usually get the latest version of Android faster than their OEM counterparts, but there are still some things that you can do to get a KitKat experience on your non-KitKat device today! First of all you’ll need a smartphone or tablet running Android 4.0 or higher. The phone I’ll show you in the video isn’t exactly “old” (it’s a Sprint HTC One Max), but the same process ...

Carrier reveals previously unannounced red HTC One Max

When HTC first launched the One, back in the early days of the year, we caught a few glimpses of a red variant of the handset. While HTC was quick to bury that version, leaving us unsure what to think about it, it ultimately popped back up over the summer, going fully official. Since then, we’ve seen availability for this red version greatly expand, and the HTC One Mini get a red ...

Jumbophones: is competing on size really that big a cop-out?

Take a look at Apple’s iPhone. Other than incremental updates and improvements, an iPhone is basically just like any other iPhone. Apple has it easy in that it doesn’t have to compete with any other manufacturer. Unfortunately, that also limits the options Apple can offer. Many will claim this is a weakness, others will claim it’s a strength. Truth be told, it’s probably a bit of both. But what of the other players in the game? Windows Phones come in a variety of configurations, but the wildcard is Android. Devices powered by Android can come in all sorts of ...
