OnePlus 9R vs OnePlus Nord: An in-house rivalry for the value crown

OnePlus pulled a surprise this year by adding a third member to the OnePlus 9 family in the form of the OnePlus 9R. Actually, it’s not necessarily a new device, but more like a OnePlus 8T donning a new suit and packing the Snapdragon 870 SoC inside. The objective is clear – OnePlus still wants to cater to its price-sensitive audience for whom the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro might have gone out of reach. But is the gamble worth it, especially in the face of a well-received device like the OnePlus Nord? We try to do the math in this OnePlus 9R vs OnePlus Nord comparison:

Display: A choice between 120Hz and 90Hz

oneplus 9r black

OnePlus Nord has two front cameras, the OnePlus 9R only has one

How much do you value a high-refresh-rate screen? Actually, scratch that. How much do the numbers 120Hz and 90Hz matter to you? I’m asking that question because the difference between a 120Hz and a 90Hz display is not easily discernible to the naked eyes, and both offer a really smooth experience.

Coming to the numbers, OnePlus 9R goes for a 6.55-inch panel while the OnePlus Nord offers a slightly smaller 6.44-inch panel – both with the same 2400 x 1080 pixels resolution. The AMOLED panel on both phones is protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass. Where the OnePlus 9R gets an upper hand is the peak refresh rate of 120Hz, while its Nord sibling maxes out at 90Hz.

Another difference is aesthetics. OnePlus 9R has a circular hole-punch cutout in the top-left corner that houses a 16MP front camera. Coming to the OnePlus Nord, it has a pill-shaped hole-punch cutout that plays home to a pair of cameras – a 32MP main snapper and an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens.

OnePlus 9R vs OnePlus Nord: Internals

OnePlus 9R goes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 SoC, which is essentially a rebranded Snapdragon 865 found in last year’s Android flagships, but still plenty powerful. You get to choose between two configurations – 8GB + 128GB and 12GB + 256GB.

OnePlus 9R vs Galaxy S20 FE

A 4,500mAhh battery with support for 65W fast charging keeps the device running, but there is no wireless charging convenience to be found on this one. And oh, the 65W comes bundled in the retail package.

OnePlus 9R offers a 65W charger in the box, OnePlus Nord opts for a 30W brick

Coming to the OnePlus Nord, it relies on the mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G SoC that brings 5G support to the table. The memory options on the table are 6GB + 64GB, 8GB + 128GB, and 12GB+ 256GB.

OnePlus Nord launch

A key difference here is that the OnePlus 9R goes with the faster UFS 3.1 storage, while the OnePlus Nord relies on UFS 2.1 standard. The 4,115mAh battery inside the OnePlus Nord goes up to 30W for fast charging, but just like the OnePlus 9R, there is no wireless charging support to be found here.

OnePlus 9R vs OnePlus Nord: Cameras

The OnePlus 9R has a quad rear camera setup that is headlined by an optically-stabilized 48MP primary shooter. It sits alongside a 16MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 5MP macro snapper, and a 2MP monochrome lens. The main camera can capture 4K videos at 60FPS and super slo-mo 720p videos at 480FPS.

oneplus 9R

Looking over to the OnePlus Nord, you will find a four-camera array at the back that includes a 48MP main snapper which uses the same Sony IMX586 sensor as the OnePlus 9R. You also get an 8MP camera for wide-angle photography, a 5MP depth sensor, and a 2MP macro snapper. However, 4K video capture on this one is capped at 30FPS, while slo-mo capture is only possible at 1080p resolution and 240FPS frame rate.

OnePlus 9R vs OnePlus Nord: Pricing

The OnePlus 9R starts at Rs. 39,999 (~ $550) and comes in Lake Blue and Carbon Black shades. However, it is unlikely that this device will make it outside the Indian market. As for the OnePlus Nord, it is not available officially in the US, but you can purchase the international version from Amazon for around $450. Color options on the table are Gray Onyx, Blue Marble, and Gray Ash.

The next OnePlus Nord phone just got leaked, and it looks familiar

The OnePlus Nord marked the beginning of a new line-up of budget phones, and was quickly followed up by two more devices – the Nord N10 5G and N100. Now, it appears that the company has a new Nord series device in the pipeline that looks a lot like the Nord 100, down the layout of the rear camera lenses and the hole-punch design on the front. Coming courtesy of Steve H. aka @OnLeaks (via Voice), the phone will likely be a successor to the OnePlus Nord N10, despite looking a lot like the OnePlus Nord N100.

The upcoming OnePlus Nord series phone appears to have a plastic build with a metallic frame keeping the screen and rear panel in place. The overall dimensions remain roughly the same as the Nord N10, but OnePlus has managed to shave 0.1mm off the height and reduced the thickness by 0.6mm. The upcoming OnePlus offering will come equipped with a 6.49-inch display, however, details such as resolution or refresh rate still remain a mystery.

OnePlus has retained the 3.5mm headphone on its upcoming budget phone, however, the fingerprint sensor has moved from the rear panel and is now located on the right side, embedded in the power button. Unfortunately, details about the rest of the innards such as the camera hardware, the SoC powering it, and the battery capacity are yet to surface online.

Right now, the whole OnePlus hype machinery is focused on the company’s upcoming flagship killers – the OnePlus 9, its more powerful Pro version, and a more affordable variant called OnePlus 9R. OnePlus has partnered with Hasselblad to improve the camera performance of its upcoming phones. The OnePlus 9 Pro, in particular, is receiving some major upgrades such as support for blazing-fast 65W wired as well as 50W wireless charging, and an LTPO AMOLED display that can automatically adjust the refresh rate value between 1Hz and 120Hz based on the on-screen content.

OnePlus pauses OxygenOS 11 update for Nord due to bugs

OnePlus Nord recently started receiving the Android 11-based OxygenOS 11 update. It came after two months of the release of the first OxygenOS 11 Open Beta. The update brought some optimizations and improvements alongside a new Android flavor. However, it seems like the update also introduced a slew of bugs – so many of them that it forced OnePlus to pause the update.

According to the official forum post, the OxygenOS 11 update for OnePlus Nord has been paused to “ensure a smooth user experience.” The company encountered some bugs that forced them to pause the rollout. Here’s what a community consultant wrote on the forum:

The update has been temporarily paused to ensure a smooth user experience, due to some bugs that have been detected. We are now trying our best to investigate and will release an updated build ASAP in the near future. Users who have installed the previous version can get the issues fixed through the later version updates. Thank you very much for your patience.

This was in reply to various users who had queries about the availability of Nord’s Android 11 update. Users who updated their Nord to the latest OxygenOS version have complained of issues such as battery drain, slow charging, and a broken app locker that prevents them from accessing their locked apps. One of the users wrote, “After updating to Android 11, there is so much lagging in OnePlus Nord. Whatsapp, Notification toggle, and other apps have become laggy. It’s really disappointing to feel like this! Also after the updates, the contrast is also unnatural.

We expect OnePlus to fix the issues soon. However, there is no timeline for the update to roll out again. It is sad to see the state of the OnePlus phones’ update schedule, which has been one of the strongest points of the devices thus far.

Here’s when OnePlus 8, 8 Pro, Nord software support will end

It's only fair to share...Share on RedditShare on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

OnePlus is one of those few brands that has always offered support for its older flagships. The company promises two years of major Android updates and three years of security updates for its flagship devices. The same goes for its first-ever Nord. For the unaware, OnePlus launched a total of six smartphones in 2020 – two under OnePlus 8 series, one OnePlus 8T, and three under the Nord series. Out of these devices, the company promises three years of regular updates for four devices. Now, it has also published the end of software support dates for the phones launched in 2020.

It comes from the official ‘OnePlus Security Updates’ page (via PiunikaWeb), which mentions that OnePlus will end support for the Nord in July 2023. Further, the OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 5G, and OnePlus 8 Pro will be supported till April 2023. In short, the company will support these devices for exactly three years from their launch.  There is no mention of the OnePlus 8T, but we expect the company to end its support in October 2023 as it was launched in October 2020. The OnePlus 8T is likely to get one more major Android update from its 8-series siblings since it was launched with Android 11 out of the box, as opposed to Android 10 on the OnePlus 8, 8 Pro and the OnePlus Nord.

Notably, not all OnePlus smartphones are treated equally. After all, you are paying a premium for updates. Hence, the budged OnePlus Nord devices, the Nord N10 5G, and the OnePlus N100 were already announced to get just one major Android update. These are expected to come to their end of the support cycle by November 2022 as OnePlus has promised two years of security updates for these smartphones.

OnePlus Nord SE with 65W fast charging is in development: Report

We know that OnePlus has been having a pretty busy year, especially when it comes to their Nord line up which recently expanded to the US. Well, speaking on that, a new report claims that they are prepping another Nord device for the US. This device would be called the Nord SE and is being developed under the codename “Ebba”. It reportedly brings a 4500 mAh battery and it supports 65W charging, giving you a full charge in under 40 minutes. On the front we might get an OLED panel unlike the ones we got with the recent Nord, and sadly we still have no details on the cameras or processor. OnePlus apparently hasn’t settled on a launch date just yet, pun intended, but we might get it shortly after the OnePlus 9 launch which will apparently happen in March.

Samsung Galaxy S20 and Note 20 devices are experiencing wireless charging issues

Let’s talk about Samsung but, not for Galaxy S21 leaks. Several users have been complaining about wireless charging issues, ever since the latest firmware update. These issues are happening on the Galaxy Note 20 and S20 lines and according to the users, your wireless charging gets constantly interrupted every few seconds. Some of these are third party chargers but, they claim that everything was fine with that same charger until that firmware update happened. We’re not sure if it was the October or September patch but, users have tried even factory resetting their devices and it doesn’t help out. We’ll see if Samsung puts out statement or releases a hot fix, we’ll keep you posted.

LG’s new rollable phone may be called LG Slide

Let’s talk about LG as, the company has been on kind of a roll lately… pun intended. But yeah, they got back in the spotlight thanks to the Wing, and they quickly teased that they were working on a roll-able smartphone as part of their Explorer Project. Well, the company just trademarked the name “LG Slide” in the EUIPO which, is kind of a clear hint as to what this devices is going to be called. LG has trademarked other names like “The Roll” before but, the LG Slide sounds cleaner. For those of you who haven’t seen the leaks, this phone should slide out or roll from it’s regular state to reveal a much larger canvas, it will most likely be aimed at both content consumption and productivity. It’s pretty much a Galaxy Fold that doesn’t Fold.. It rolls. We should expect it some time in Q1 next year. So, are you guys interested in a phone like this? Because it is definitely cool to see.

iPhone 13 may arrive with F/1.8 ultrawide lens and LTPO displays

New iPhone SE not coming in the first half of 2021: Ming-Chi Kuo

Let’s talk about upcoming iPhones and Ming Chi Kuo reports. Well, according to a new alleged report, it won’t happen in the first half of 2020, quick only means that the possibility of another iPhone SE is not happening yet. It claims that there is some stiff competition between four Apple suppliers to be in charge of the iPhone 13’s camera and this might hinder the iPhone SE’s production. So, apparently Apple is putting their effort in to the iPhone 13 which we’ll talk about soon and that might move the iPhone SE to the back seat. Now, we don’t know if this phone will be getting a redesign like rumors hinted to the previous one but we should technically still expect it next year, just not in the first half of the year. Let’s move on to the iPhone 13. On his most recent note, Kuo claims that we’ll be getting 4 iPhones once again and that the Pros will get a hardware update when it comes to the cameras. He claims that the ultra wide lens will be an F/1.8 6P lens with autofocus. This means that we should get noticeable improvements over the current iPhones which pack an F/2.4 5P fixed focus ultra wide lens. Another report claims that these iPhones’ display will use 10-20% less power than the 12 line. This is because we’ll be reportedly getting LTPO displays which are already on the Apple Watch. This will also allow for high refresh rate, finally, while using less power. Other rumors for the iPhone 13 also hint to an on-display fingerprint sensor and a smaller notch.

Story of the day:

Google Account and Google Photos’ storage policies will change, for worse?

Now let’s talk about Google and probably one of the services that I recommend most, which I might not recommend any more. Google just made some major changes on its storage policies, and unless you own a Pixel, prepare your wallet. The first is that Google is now making Google Docs, Sheets and Slides count toward storage caps on your Google Drive, whether you’re on the base 15GB or pay extra. The problem is Google Photos. In the past you had free unlimited storage for high quality photos and video, which Google would convert and optimize for you. Well as of June 1st, 2021, unless you own a Pixel, those high quality photos and videos will also count toward your storage limitations. This is a major problem. In the past I would recommend that people with limited storage simply use Google Photos to back everything up, but now that could become a recurring monthly fee depending on how much you’ve backed up. In Google’s defense, they’re pretty much following the practice that every other company in the industry was providing, but it makes you wonder what holds anyone back from just getting 2TB on Office 365, backup your photos on OneDrive, and get superior solution to Google Docs with Microsoft Office apps.

Early Amazon Prime Day deals include Apple’s MacBook Air and more devices on sale

The official news today begin with Deals. Let’s start today with some early Prime Day ones, which is kind of a weird thing to say in the middle of October. The MacBook Air is now $150 off, leaving the 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage variant for $1200. The latest 12.9in iPad Pro is also $50 off, leaving the Wi-Fi only, 128GB of storage variant for $950. To conclude with the Apple section, the iPad Mini is $63 off, this leaves the 64GB variant for $336. Moving on, there’s a ton of deals on Amazon products, like the Echo Show 5 which is 50% off, leaving it at $45. We have a full list in the description and a link to the article with even more deals.

Razer’s new Blade Stealth 13 packs an 11th Gen Intel Core processor and OLED display

Now let’s talk Gaming and particularly Razer as the company has just launched their new gaming Ultrabook with the Blade Stealth 13 at RazerCon. It comes equipped with an 11th Gen Intel Core i7, and it’s actually one of their Tiger Lake processors. It also packs 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD and an Nvidia GTX 1650 Ti with a Max Q design. You get WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, two USB-A ports, two USB Type C Thunderbolt ports, and a headphone jack combo. The entry level variant brings a 13.3in FHD display running at 120Hz, weighing 3.11lbs and it’s actually just 0.60in thick. This model will cost you $1799 so, if you’re planning on buying I recommend you wait TheUnlockr’s walkthrough, to see if it’s worth it.

HUAWEI Mate 40 series is launching on October 22. Here’s everything we know so far

Now let’s talk Huawei as the company continues to show that they’re in the flagship smartphone conversation, even with everything that’s happened. Over the weekend, Huawei announced that they will be having their Mate 40 Event on October 22nd at 2PM CEDT. So far we’ve heard that the company is having several issues with their Kirin 9000 processors so, this might just be an announcement event with the phone coming later. Now, something that the company is heavily teasing is the camera, we’re expecting a 108MP main sensor, a free-form 9P lens, the periscope module with 5x optical zoom, an ultrawide, and a ToF sensor. The head of their smartphone unit also posted a new picture on Weibo where you can see the moon in broad daylight and honestly, with an impressive amount of detail. And, apparently this picture was taken with the regular Mate 40 and not the Pro. So yeah, if this is the regular variant, I can’t begin to imagine the Pro. We’ll see what we get later this month.

OnePlus Nord could get a Sandstone Black variant on October 14

OnePlus leak claims two Nord-series phones will debut on October 26

Now, let’s talk about the OnePlus Nord, but the whole Nord Series not just the one that’s already out. First off, the company is teasing the launch of a new Nord Special Edition that would come in a Sandstone Back finish. The teaser is captioned “Beauty is Everywhere, find it with OnePlus Nord” on October 14th and shows the silhouette of the phone on sand and near some rock. And, that’s all great, it’s probably just another color variant. However, we have more leaks for the unreleased Nord devices. According to a tipster, the Nord N10 5G and the N100 will be launched on October 26. These leaks go along with the previous ones, where the N10 5G would bring a 6.5-inch display running at 120Hz, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 SoC, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage with the price starting at around $400. Now, the N100 would bring a 6.52-inch display, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 460, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage for around $200. Of course, we should take these with a grain of salt but, we’re two days away from the Event so we should know more very soon. Am I the only one that’s wondering why we’re also not getting the original Nord in the US?

Upcoming HomePod mini and Apple TV may track your location using Ultra Wideband

Guys we know, there’s a lot of Apple news lately but, come on the event is tomorrow, so in preparation, let’s discuss the last batch of things we heard. First, let’s cover non-iPhone related products. Starting with the HomePod we got some new tweets from Jon Prosser where he mentions that the new HomePod Mini and the new Apple TV will serve as UWB base stations. This means that they’ll track your location once you walk inside your house while using other UI devices like your iPhone or apple Watch. They will use information from them for media controls, brightness and volume controls and doors and locks if you have HomeKit. You can even use the Find My app to see if one of your devices has been moved or taken from your home. Honestly it sounds really cool and Prosser also claims that Apple will be making a big deal out of all the capabilities of the U1 chip so let’s see. But, moving on let’s talk AirPods Studio. According to him, his sources still say that It’s impossible to get the AirPods Studio tomorrow but, Apple first removed the dedicated Beats page from the App Store and then brought it back. They’re still selling Beats, but the original landing page dedicated to them might hint to some change in plans. We wonder if Apple now wants to fully merge the brand with AirPods.. We’ll see.

Story of the day:

Ming-Chi Kuo believes iPhone 12 will dominate upcoming iPhone sales

iPhone 12 leaks tip better zoom output, faster Face ID, and a ‘smooth’ sacrifice

And you know it was coming, let’s talk about the iPhone 12 which will become official tomorrow. Let’s begin with a new note from Ming Chi Kuo where he predicts what the top seller is going to be. According to Kuo, there is a demand for smaller iPhones but, not worldwide. He predicts that even with the $699 price tag, there’s not a ton of people looking for smaller phones and, the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 will outsell the 5.4-inch Mini. He believes that Apple will ship 80-85M units of all iPhone 12 models in Q4 of this year, 10M higher than what they got last year with the 11.. That’s what lowering the price tag does. Now, let’s talk about things we won’t get for a second. I still have some hope that 120Hz displays will make the cut but, according to Jon Prosser, Apple didn’t add the feature due to 5G. Cupertino apparently picked 5G rather than ProMotion because it’s an easier thing to market, and having both of them on this phone would require a significantly larger battery than what we’ll be getting. So, along with the missing drivers, this is why we won’t get ProMotion until next year. Finally, we have another huge list of “finalized and revised” leaks from Pine on Twitter. We’ll link the whole thread in the description but, some of the most important things he mentioned are: a shrunk Face ID module that will increase the angles and will introduce a new algorithm for faster speeds, Digital and Optical Zoom are getting a massive boost, Night mode will be available on the telephoto and deep fusion improvements, as well as better lowlight performance with the ultra wide. Finally he also added we are getting larger batteries due to 5G.

OnePlus leak claims two Nord-series phones will debut on October 26

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei confirmed back in July a Nord-series smartphone is coming to the US, since the first-gen didn’t make it to the American soil. In the subsequent months, multiple leaks surfaced online claiming that not one, but two OnePlus Nord series smartphones will arrive in the US market soon. Now, tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer has claimed that the OnePlus Nord N10 5G and the OnePlus Nord N100 will be officially launched on October 26.

The fresh leak falls in line with a previous one which claimed that the Nord N10 5G and the Nord N100 will go official later this month. Starting with the OnePlus Nord N10 5G, it will reportedly pack a 6.49-inch FHD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate. Qualcomm’s freshly-announced Snapdragon 690 processor will be at its heart, ticking alongside 6 gigs of RAM and 128GB storage. The Qualcomm SoC will also bring 5G to the table

OnePlus Nord N10 5G’s quad rear camera setup will be highlighted by a 64MP primary sensor, sitting alongside an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a couple of 2MP sensors for macro photography and depth sensing. The company is reportedly mulling an asking price of approximately $400 for its next smartphone, putting it in the same segment as Google’s Pixel 4a and the iPhone SE

As for the OnePlus Nord N100, it will be priced further down the price ladder, which means a less powerful chipset, a lower-refresh rate display, and toned down cameras. As per a previous leak, the OnePlus Nord N100 might rely on the Snapdragon 460 SoC paired with 4 gigs of RAM and 64GB onboard storage.

Other rumored OnePlus Nord N100 specifications include a 13MP snapper highlighting its triple rear camera setup, a 6.52-inch HD display and a large 6,000mAh battery. Leaks suggest that the OnePlus Nord N100 might be priced somewhere around the $200 mark, but do process this bit with a pinch of salt.

OnePlus Nord N10 5G with a 90Hz display, 64MP camera coming soon for under $400: Report

In the past couple of months, we’ve heard multiple rumors of a new OnePlus Nord series device that will be more affordable and is headed to the US market. So far, all we have got is an admission from OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei who revealed in an interview back in July that a different variant of the OnePlus Nord is on its way to the US consumers. Now, an AndroidCentral report claims to offer details such as what this phone will be called, how much it costs, and what hardware it will bring to the table.

Starting with the name, the device in question is internally called ‘Billie’ and will debut in the market as OnePlus Nord N10 5G. We don’t have any word on how much it costs, but the report claims that OnePlus is targeting a price tag under the $400 mark, which would directly put it in the same segment as the iPhone SE and the Pixel 4a, both of which have been well-received by the audience.

Coming to the specifications, the OnePlus Nord N10 5G will reportedly feature a 6.49-inch display with an FHD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate as well. It will draw power from the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 processor, which is the first Snapdragon 6xx series processors to offer 5G support. The Qualcomm chip will be accompanied by a healthy 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage

In the camera department, the OnePlus Nord N10 5G is tipped to pack four rear cameras. The main camera will use a 64MP sensor, and if true, this will be the highest resolution camera we have seen on any OnePlus smartphone so far. It will sit alongside an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a pair of 2MP sensors, most likely for depth sensing and macro photography. No word on the resolution of the front camera though.

OnePlus Clover was spotted on Geekbench with a different processor

This is not the first time that we have seen the OnePlus Clover over at Geekbench. Previous reports claimed that the device was going to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor, but this time we get another chipset powering the show.

We have received a couple of rumors claiming that OnePlus was working on another mid-range smartphone. It was first rumored, back in August, that this new device would also come under the OnePlus Nord name, as it was also suggested that the company might launch two new devices by the end of this year. This information would make sense, considering that we now see a new OnePlus Nord with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 processor and 4GB RAM.

The guys over at MySmartPrice found the scores for the device with model number OnePlus BE2012. Its score results show that it’s 8-core CPU clocked at 1.80GHz, with the “Bengal” codename, while the device scores 245 in the single-core test and 1174 in the multi-core test.

Rumors suggest that the new OnePlus Clover will arrive with a 6.52-inch display with HD+ resolution, 64GB of expandable storage, and a triple camera shooter that will include a 13MP main camera and two 2MP cameras. We could also receive a 6,00mAr battery with 18W fast charging support.

This phone is also expected to make its way to the United States, and it would also be cheaper than the OnePlus Nord, which is currently £379.00 or $503 over in the United Kingdom. However, the US is still waiting for the Nord to be available, so it seems that we will have to wait even longer for the new Clover.

Maybe the most important difference is that the OnePlus Nord has already been field-tested, and there’s still no official information about the OnePlus Clover. With that in mind, which device would you buy?
