OnePlus smartwatch won’t run Wear OS, and I’m excited about it!

Earlier today, some key details about the upcoming OnePlus smartwatch surfaced online prior to its March 23rd debut. Among them was the mention of up to a week’s worth of battery life with just 20 minutes of charging. With such high battery longevity figures, we were skeptical about the watch running Wear OS, since devices powered by Google’s smartwatch OS barely longer than a couple of days. Well, none other than OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has now confirmed that the company’s first smartwatch won’t run Wear OS. Here’s what Lau wrote on the official OnePlus forum:

“When developing the OnePlus Watch, we tried to understand the pain points for a smart watch wearer.
We chose to go with a smart wear operating system developed based on RTOS because we believe it provides you a smooth and reliable experience while offering a great battery life, covering some of the biggest concerns we’ve been hearing from people looking to buy a smartwatch.”

The OnePlus smartwatch will run custom software based on RTOS

In case you’re wondering, RTOS stands for Real-Time Operating System. Or in simple terms, it is the proprietary software developed by a company to run on wearable devices, while allowing limited interaction with third-party apps. For example, you will see incoming message alerts, but actionable notifications might not be possible. The best example is the smartwatches offered by the likes of Xiaomi, HUAWEI, and Honor among other brands. And now, OnePlus is going to join that list.

OnePlus’ official teasers have confirmed that the upcoming smartwatch will have a round dial. Lau, on the other hand, has also confirmed that the wearable device will offer seamless connectivity with the company’s entire portfolio of devices (phones, audio wearables, and even its smart TVs). Leaks have predicted features such as automatic workout detection, sleep tracking, continuous heart rate monitoring, stress detection, and blood oxygen level measurement as well.

Ditching Wear OS will play in OnePlus’ favor

In my experience, smartwatches running custom software based on RTOS tend to be less power-hungry, which means they can run on a low-end processor and can last up to a few weeks on a single charge. And oh, they tend to much cheaper than their Wear OS running counterparts. Take for example the Moto 360 and Mobvoi’s TicWatch series smartwatches that barely make it past a couple of days worth of usage. OnePlus apparently wanted to avoid those red flags.

Even though they offer wider app support and deeper integration with Google’s Android ecosystem, their battery life woes and sluggishness over time have proved to be a major hurdle for the Wear OS smartwatch ecosystem. Interestingly, OnePlus originally shelved plans for its smartwatch years ago due to the experience offered by Wear OS not living up to the company’s desired standards.

Ditching Wear OS allows cheaper innards, and overall, a more affordable smartwatch

And by reducing the hardware requirements of WearOS, especially if you’re targeting a fluid experience in the long run, OnePlus has avoided using expensive internals. And this would mean the company can price its smartwatch competitively and might be able to one-up the competition from other Chinese brands by adding some extras and offering a design that stands out from the crowd.

Lau has promised that the OnePlus smartwatch will offer ‘a best-in-class experience at an affordable price point’ and it is quite likely that the company will achieve that goal by not siding with Wear OS. From a customer’s perspective, I am optimistic about OnePlus’ decision, and eagerly looking forward to what the OnePlus smartwatch brings to the table and seeing how it stands out from the competition.

For now, the leaks have me excited. The OnePlus smartwatch will reportedly arrive in a 46mm model with two color options to choose from – silver and black. The build will be IP68-certified, which means you can take it for a swim too. And oh, the device will reportedly offer a dedicated swim mode too. Regarding the seamless connectivity part mentioned above, you will reportedly be able to control your OnePlus TV with the smartwatch. OnePlus is also bringing the proprietary Warp Charge fast charging tech to the game as well.

OnePlus confirms that its first smartwatch arrives on March 23

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau finally admitted back in December last year that the company was working on its first smartwatch that would arrive early in 2021. Well, that debut is upon us. OnePlus has today officially confirmed that its first smartwatch will make its debut on March 23, the same day that its highly anticipated OnePlus 9 series phones are launched. While the tweet is enough of a teaser in itself even without naming the product, an official OnePlus forum post makes it abundantly clear that a smartwatch is in the pipeline.

“Now, as the clock is ticking down to the launch of our latest flagship, we’re excited to bring you an exclusive Community announcement… it’s time for something new. This fresh addition to the OnePlus family is healthy, punctual and even takes care of you while you sleep.”

One smartwatch, two styles – classy and sporty!

Back in January, two variants of the OnePlus smartwatch carrying the model numbers W501GB and W301GB were certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), indicating that the wearable will be almost certainly be launched in India, which also happens to the company’s biggest market. India happens to the testbed for a new class of OnePlus products, with the company selling a wide range of products here that range from phones and audio products to power banks and even smart TVs across a wide price spectrum.

Interestingly, a patent filed by OnePlus in Germany revealed the design schematics for its smartwatch, which was shown rocking a round dial – something that has now been confirmed by the official teaser images. Notably, the patent diagrams show the watch flaunting two types of straps – a sporty one that looks like the silicone straps we’ve seen on the Apple Watch, and a classy one that might turn out to be a more premium leather option.

Details about the internals are still under the wraps and no credible leaks have emerged so far either. On the software side, the OnePlus smartwatch will likely run a heavily customized version of Wear OS. It is worth noting here that OnePlus initially shelved plans of a smartwatch years ago because it thought Wear OS was not ready to deliver the kind of experience OnePlus sought from its smartwatch.

OnePlus smartwatch gets certified ahead of its early 2021 launch

The saga of OnePlus’ smartwatch ambitions has been a bumpy one. After starting work on a smartwatch years ago and then prematurely sunsetting it, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau finally revealed last month the smartwatch project is back on track and that it will be launched early in 2021. But that’s just about it. Unlike OnePlus’ phones, the OnePlus Watch (tentative name) has been shrouded in mystery. However, it appears that the OnePlus Watch is inching closer to its launch.

The OnePlus smartwatch has been certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards, suggesting that the device is not too far away from its official debut. First spotted by leakster and certification watcher Mukul Sharma (@stufflistings), two models of the OnePlus Watch have been listed on the database – W501GB and W301GB.

However, it is unclear if these are two separate variants with a different case size, or if they are just Bluetooth and LTE capable versions of the OnePlus smartwatch. As we mentioned earlier, everything regarding the upcoming wearable is in the speculative stage as of now. The only information we have comes from leakster Max J. who claims that the OnePlus Watch has a round display.

On the software side, OnePlus’ upcoming smartwatch will likely run Wear OS, Google’s own Android-based operating system for smartwatches. “Wear OS definitely has room to improve. What we’re trying to do is work with Google to try to improve the connectivity between the Wear OS ecosystem, Android TV, and Android smartphones to create this ability for better device interoperability across the ecosystems. This has been something looked at very positively from Google’s side as well,” Lau mentioned in an interview last year.

It is worth noting that OnePlus apparently shelved plans of a smartwatch because the company thought Wear OS is not ready and can’t provide the fulfilling smartwatch experience that the company sought to achieve. However, it appears that the company is finally ready to give Wear OS a shot. Though, it is quite likely that the OnePlus smartwatch will run a heavily customized version of Wear OS, just like the OxygenOS skin running on its smartphones.
