CES 2015: Everything we got to see at this year’s show

Another year, another International Consumer Electronics Show behind us. Was 2015’s one that will go down as a banner year in the annals of history? We didn’t see any huge show-stopping announcements, nor surprise reveals of everyone’s-talking-about-it hardware, but the show we did see unfold over the course of last week was still a totally solid offering, packed with lots of great phones, tablets, wearables, and accessories that all came together to place us on some solid footing as we get ready for the rest of this quarter’s launches. As we start thinking about

Panasonic Lumix CM1: hands-on (Video)

It was all the way back in September when we first heard about the Panasonic Lumix CM1, days when the launches of IFA were still fresh on our minds. Months later, we’re knee-deep in CES, but the CM1 is along for the ride with us, popping back up on the expo floor in Las Vegas. We went hands-on with the hardware this time, hoping to find out a little more about its impressive-looking imaging capabilities. Is the Lumix CM1 a camera or a smartphone? Panasonic may call it a camera, but with a Snapdragon 801, ...

Panasonic’s new Lumix CM1 has an incredible camera

It’s pretty common to see powerful Android smartphones these days – we’ve grown accustomed to yearly (or even shorter, in the case of some OEMs) release cycles from the likes of Samsung, HTC, LG, Sony, and others as well. But it is rare to have both a powerful Android smartphone with an especially-commendable camera; sure, phones like the LG G3 can take some pretty nice pictures, but those probably aren’t at the level of the Panasonic Lumix CM1, probably the best Android cameraphone on paper we’ve seen to date. Before we jump into that camera, let’s rattle ...

Panasonic still clearly making smartphones, despite last year’s “retirement”

Last year brought us news of a couple smartphone OEMs hanging up their hats, deciding that they were no longer interested in releasing any new handsets. First we saw NEC say goodbye over the summer, followed a few months later by Panasonic. In the case of Panasonic, the company said that it would still make feature phones, and that it might release some specialty smartphones (like ruggedized devices for police or the ...

Former smartphone manufacturer returning to the game? (And no, not HP)

Is 2014 going to be the year of fresh starts for companies that previously turned their backs on the smartphone market? After the shuttering of webOS, HP bowed-out for a couple years, but this week we saw the company step up to face the industry again, announcing its extra-large VoiceTab models running Android. Today we get word that another company that we though was done with phones may be sticking around for an encore, with rumors that Panasonic could be preparing to introduce a new handset at the MWC. As you may recall, ...

Start saving now for Panasonic’s pricey 4K Windows 8.1 tablet

Samsung may be stretching its tablet lineup to new sizes with the Galaxy Note 12.2, but compared to some models from other manufacturers, even that’s comparatively tiny. Remember all the way back in January, when we were still drooling over everything CES had to reveal? One of the boundary-pushing products we saw announced was a massive twenty-inch tablet from Panasonic, with a 4K 3840 x 2560 panel that put everyone else to shame.

Panasonic retires from smartphone business

Panasonic’s smartphone story is an interesting, agitated, and sad one. The Japanese company has left the European market in 2005, and, six years later, in 2011, has returned with plans of presence on the American market too. One year later it planned its departure again, and, one year later, counting as present, we’ve heard it was planning on

Another Android OEM putting an end to its smartphone sales?

Less than a month ago, we learned that NEC, though never a major player in the smartphone game, was dropping-out entirely. Despite new hardware like the NEC Terrain exposing the brand to larger audiences, it apparently didn’t make sense to continue down that road, so the manufacturer elected to cut its losses. Today we’re hearing what sounds like the beginning of the end to the smartphone story for another big-name OEM, with Panasonic getting ready to ...

Android-powered Panasonic DECT phone announced

Android is now powering all sort of consumer electronics — yes, we’re still waiting for the Android dishwasher (Tony), alongside the webOS toaster (Michael) — and Panasonic has announced a DECT (digital cordless) phone running on Google’s operating system. The Panasonic KX-PRX120 looks like a smartphone, and also acts like one. Don’t hold your breath for specs though: 3.5 inch TFT HVGA screen, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS (like you’d take it outside the base range), .3MP webcam, 1450mAh battery, microSD card slot, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. No ...
