This is what we could expect from Apple’s new mixed reality headset

We’ve been receiving several rumors and leaks about a new mixed reality headset from Apple. The latest leak gives us an idea of how the device may look and a possible name, as concept artist Antonia De Rosa called them Apple View, and now, we also get to see several patent applications that explain Apple’s vision for this new mixed reality headset.

Apple patents for a new mixed reality headset were made public earlier today. Said patents were filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office, and they mention specific features that may arrive with this future Apple product. This “Head-Mounted Display Unit With Adaptable Facial Interface” patent explains how its design elements can prevent the headset from moving around when a person moves, at the same time that it would provide a comfortable fit.

“The eye tracking system includes at least one eye tracking camera, an illumination source that emits infrared light towards the user’s eyes, and diffraction gratings located at the eyepieces. The diffraction gratings redirect or reflect at least a portion of infrared light reflected off the user’s eyes, while allowing visible light to pass. The cameras capture images of the user’s eyes from the infrared light that is redirected or reflected by the diffraction gratings.”

There are reports claiming that this new mixed reality headset would arrive with a mesh material that would also help give users amazing comfort levels. Other details mention the possibility of getting over a dozen cameras, which would help to achieve eye-tracking features to give a better experience, and 8K displays to make everything look as perfect as possible. This information would go along the lines of another patent that was made public today. It is called “Eye Tracking System,” and it would work with another patent called “Electronic Device With A Tunable Lens,” to adjust and move the lenses through a new system is entirely electronic and controlled by actuators.

“Apple has for years worked on technology that uses eye tracking to fully render only parts of the display where the user is looking. That would let the headset show lower-quality graphics in the user’s peripheral vision and reduce the device’s computing needs, according to people with knowledge of the efforts.”

A patent called 3D Document Editing System would give users the chance to pair their keyboard to the mixed reality headset to let them edit text and a feature that would allow users to see the real-world environment in the document editing software.

“The VR device may be configured to display a 3D text generation and editing GUI in a virtual space that includes a virtual screen for entering or editing text in documents via a keypad of the input device. Unlike conventional 2D graphical user interfaces, using embodiments of the 3D document editing system, a text area or text field of a document can be placed at or moved to various Z-depths in the 3D virtual space.”

“In some embodiments, the VR device may also provide augmented reality (AR) or mixed reality (MR) by combining computer generated information with a view of the user’s environment to augment, or add content to, a user’s view of the world. In these embodiments, the 3D text generation and editing GUI may be displayed in an AR or MR view of the user’s environment.”

Rumors suggest that this new device may arrive as soon as next year, and some have even given Apple’s mixed reality headset a possible price tag that could hit the $3,000 mark. This would make it compete against the Microsoft HoloLens 2, which’s currently priced at $3,500.

Patents reveal possible uses for Apple’s upcoming AirTags

We keep getting more information concerning Apple’s AirTags. Now we get some information that could help understand possible applications for these devices and include some illustrations that explain how they would work.

We have received some rather interesting information that details the use of the upcoming AirTags. The guys over at Patently Apple found what is taken as a “master patent application from Apple, regarding their future Airtags product” at the US Patent & Trademark Office. This patent mentions more than just two size options, which were previously mentioned by leaker L0vetodream, and it also makes us believe that Apple has great plans for them in the future.

“Apple’s invention is about AirTags, a small, battery-powered tag, puck, or other object of convenient size and shape, that can be physically and/or geographically located using wireless communications systems and techniques. For example, a tag may include an antenna that emits a wireless signal or beacon that is detectable by another electronic device such as an iPhone.

“The tag may include a battery, sensors, a wireless communication system, and one or more output devices that can produce audible and/or haptic outputs. Localization functions may be provided by the wireless communication system, and in particular, by the tag sending wireless signals to other devices (e.g., smartphones, tablet computers, etc.) that analyze the wireless signals to determine the distance, position, location, and/or orientation of the tag with a high degree of accuracy.”

AirTags would also be used in different modes, including a “normal operation mode” that would conserve power and establish momentary or internment communications with other devices to confirm the tag’s location. A “lost mode” would be triggered if there’s an unexpected loss of communication between the tag and one or more devices, which may indicate that the device is not close to the user.

Images also show that the AirTags would also be used on a user body to monitor posture and track full-body motion, which would help control a game or record movement during a workout. Whatever the case, we will still have to wait for the new AirTags to launch, and rumors suggest that they may arrive in a rumored Apple event that may take place on November 17.

Apparently, Apple Glasses would make any surface a virtual touch interface

We have been getting rumors concerning the new Apple Glasses for quite a while. Some of these rumors suggest that these new AR glasses would be a great accessory that would boost privacy features, while others claim that they may be a powerful wearable product. Luckily, we have just laid our eyes on a patent application filed by Apple in 2016, which could give us an idea of what Apple wants to do with this new hardware.

The guys over at Appleinsider have found an interesting patent application from Apple. We can see that one of the features in the Apple Glasses would be able to make any surface into a virtual touch interface. Further, a person using these Glasses would be able to interact with the mixed virtual/real environment that they are looking at. This could be made possible with the help of an iPad or iPhone as an AR viewfinder, where the user would be able to interact with the AR environment while using a glove or finger sensors. However, finger to surface contact would be possible through infrared heat sensing.

“The present disclosure is related to a method and device for detecting a touch between at least part of a first object and at least part of a second object, wherein the at least part of the first object has a different temperature than the at least part of the second object. The method includes providing at least one thermal image of a portion of the second object, determining in at least part of the at least one thermal image a pattern which is indicative of a particular value or range of temperature or a particular value or range of temperature change, and using the determined pattern for detecting a touch between the at least part of the first object and the at least part of the second object.”

The Apple Glasses would also project controls onto real-world objects, and these would react to the user’s touch. This would be incredible, but let’s remember that it’s still just a patent, and we don’t always get to see patents become real working products or features.

The new Chromecast could arrive with a new name and Android TV

A new report claims that the Chromecast might be going through some changes soon. Apparently it will now be called Nest Cast and it will run full blown Android TV. Instead of having the content cast directly from your phone or other device, users would be able to use a remote to interact with the interface, just like TVs with Android TV. It will also be able to stream games through Stadia, sources aren’t certain when we are getting this but we might see it at Google I/O. Oh and other reports say that Android TV is gonna now become Google TV as well. Stay tuned.

Apple could give us a foldable MacBook or MacBook Pro in the future

Apple has put out several foldable patents over the years for both the iPad and the iPhone and now we have a new one for the Mac. The ‘Planar Hing Assembly’ patent shows a design for a MacBook Pro-style device which would have a ‘single piece body with a seamless appearance that includes a bendable portion, capable of having a smoothly curved shape’. The biggest problem is that in this bendable portion you still have mechanical components that have to be in communication with the rest of the device, doing things like connecting the keyboard to the display. Apple would fix the problem of having this bendable piece work by stacking layers that can transition from an uncompressed to a compressed state. This bendable hinge could be even more reliable than current hinges if done right, but we’ll see if we ever get it.

The interesting thing is that they now cost $249 instead of $349. Oh and the Surface Earbuds that look like gages.. Yeah those are finally available and ugly as ever.

Story of the day:

These could be the new Samsung Galaxy S21 camera specs

We have a new report from Taiwan that hints to Samsung testing some interesting camera specs for the Galaxy S21. The report claims due to the Galaxy S20 being notorious for its focusing issues, that’s gonna be a major priority. It also says that one of the development models is rumored to bring a 150MP main sensor, a 64MP telephoto, a 16MP wide angle and a 12MP macro sensor. The report even mentiosn that the company might drop the ToF, which is quite interesting at a time when there’s so much bet for AR. Apparently two versions of this model are being tested, one with Optical Image Stabilization on the main sensor, the telephoto and the selfie camera. The other one has OIS for the main sensor, the telephoto and the wide angle. Samsung is also reportedly working on ramping up their work on higher resolution sensors to make room for the 150MP sensor.

Apple could give us a foldable MacBook or MacBook Pro in the future

We keep on getting images and patents that suggest that Apple is continually working to give us a new MacBook or MacBook Pro with a foldable design in the future. This time we see that the company is trying to replace the current hinge mechanism that connects the screen to the body of the computer and giving us a “planar hinge assembly that could apply to a MacBook Pro device.”

Apple’s US Patent No 10,642,318, describes “A personal computing device comprises a single piece body having a seamless overall appearance and that includes a bendable portion that is capable of having a smoothly curved shape. The single-piece body includes a first part capable of carrying a display suitable for presenting visual content, and a second part that is capable of carrying an input device suitable for accepting an input action.”

These new hinges are referred to as a new multi-state bending assembly, and it also mentions that it could be applied to a smartphone cover or a tablet computer device. The main idea is to create a single piece body with a bendable portion that would still have to house the same electronics that connect the screen to a keyboard. This “adjustable bending structure” would be formed by a stack of layers that can transition from an uncompressed state to a compressed state. We would only have to wait and see if this is simpler and more reliable than the current hinge in the MacBook Pro.
