Qualcomm’s 5nm Snapdragon 780G arrives with top-tier camera and connectivity upgrades

Qualcomm has added another 7xx series SoC to its arsenal – the Snapdragon 780G SoC. This one comes with a host of features that have so far been limited to flagship chipsets. To recount a few, it is the first Snapdragon 7xx series SoC based on the 5nm process, the first one to offer a triple ISP architecture, the first one to come armed with the in-house 6th gen Qualcomm AI Engine, Wi-Fi 6E, and the new Snapdragon Sound suite of audio enhancements. Phones powered by the latest Qualcomm offering will arrive in the second quarter of 2021.

Based on the Kryo 670 CPU that promises 40% performance gain

At its heart is the Kryo 670 CPU running at a peak frequency of 2.4GHz, assisted by the Adreno GPU. Qualcomm is touting a performance boost of 40%, and also bringing a bunch of Snapdragon Elite Gaming tricks to its latest mid-tier SoC. On the connectivity front, the Snapdragon 780G SoC arrives with the X53 5G modem that is claimed to facilitate downlink speeds of up to 3.3Gbps. You also get support for Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), and Bluetooth v5.2 rounding up the wireless connectivity suite.

qualcomm snapdragon 780 logo

Coming to camera capabilities, Snapdragon 780G SoC offers triple 14-bit ISPs with the Qualcomm Spectra 570 Image Signal Processor at its heart. The triple-ISP design allows the phone to capture images from the wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto camera simultaneously. The new SoC also offers support for HDR10+ video capture and 4K HDR video recording assisted by what Qualcomm calls computational HDR to deliver better color, contrast, and details in photos as well as videos.

Triple ISP design allows simultaneous image capture from three 25MP sensors

Snapdragon 780G SoC can drive screens with a peak FHD+ resolution at 144Hz refresh rate, and supports HDR10 and HDR10+ playback as well. Interestingly, support for RAM standard is listed as LPDDR4 (likely LPDDR4X too), but not faster LPDDR5 standard. Plus, it also brings compatibility for the new Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max ultrasonic fingerprint sensor by Qualcomm that is large enough to read two fingerprints at once.

The 6th generation Qualcomm AI Engine, working in tandem with the Qualcomm Hexagon 770 processor, is said to be twice as powerful as its predecessor and offers 2 TOPs AI performance. There’s also a dedicated AI processor to tune audio for higher clarity courtesy of the second-gen Qualcomm Sensing Hub, and support for the recently announced Snapdragon Sound enhancements are on the table as well.

Intel aims to sell ARM chips to Apple days after anti-Mac ad campaign

More evidence of next iPad Pro chip being based on Apple M1 surfaces

Let’s move on to Intel just for a quick second as it looks like their marketing team doesn’t talk to their other teams. If you remember, last week they launched those ads with Justin Long, aka the Mac himself, on how PCs are better since they’re still powered by Intel. Well, now their CEO just went on to basically say that they want to become a major provider of products that include x86 and ARM chips, with one of the companies they want to serve being Apple. I know, hilarious considering that they sold their ARM business years ago, and about Apple we know why. But alright, speaking of Apple and chips, let’s talk about the upcoming iPad Pros. The guys over at 9to5Mac have found references of an A14X chip in the iOS 14.5 Source Code which we are still waiting on. And apparently, the report mentions that the A14X is based on the T8103, which is the codename for the M1 Chip. This goes along with a previous Bloomberg report where they claimed we could expect an updated and faster processor that was on par with the M1. So yeah, we should be getting close to those iPad Pros with better processors, mini-LED displays and more, hopefully some time in April. If only they ran macOS..

LG might shutter its phone division after failing to find a buyer

Let’s move the spotlight on to some rather sad news, when it comes to LG. Last week some reports came out that LG’s Rollable was back in play, even with the rumors that LG might sell their smartphone business. Well, now we have a new report from a Korean news agency that claims that LG’s plans to sell their phone business have fallen through, for real this time. Apparently local sources claim that LG is now planning to shutter their smartphone division altogether after their negotiations didn’t work out. So apparently, not only the plans for the Rollable but for other phones like the LG “Rainbow” concept have been put on Ice at the moment. So of course, these are just reports but nothing to not be worried about given the amount of innovation LG meant to the market. We have heard from previous reports that the employees would be shifted on to other positions within LG, we hope that’s true but of course, we should wait until we get official statements.

Qualcomm is working on a Nintendo Switch-like console that runs Android 12: Report

Now, let’s talk about Qualcomm and the Nintendo Switch.. Yeah, completely unrelated since the Switch runs on NVIDIA, but you’ll get where I’m going. According to a new report from Android Police, Qualcomm is taking a Snapdragon chip and putting it into an Android-powered game console that has detachable controllers and the ability to connect to televisions. So yeah it’s not really a Nintendo Switch but.. Qualcomm wants to do a Switch. The report claims that the core of the device would be thicker and bulkier than a smartphone. And we could expect this chip to be the next generation of Snapdragon Silicon which should be released some time in Q1 of 2022, meaning it’s most likely the 888s successor. It would also bring a 6,000 mAh battery with Quick Charge, 5G, dual-zone haptics, an SD card Slot, Bluetooth and more with the controllers being sourced by a third party. Now, this console would be running a “customized launcher” of Android 12, and besides the Play Store, it could also brings the Epic Games store pre-installed which makes it pretty interesting considering their catalog. The target price is reportedly set at 300 dollars but, we don’t know exactly what that will get you. We’ll see how the reports evolve as, well we already saw the NVIDIA Shield flop.. That said, it may have been ahead of its time as Android games are far better now.

Story of the day:

iPhone 13 tipped to use 120Hz LTPO displays from Samsung

Alleged image of iPhone 13 series front glass shows a smaller notch

But finally, for the hottest news today let’s talk iPhone 13 as, the reports have kinda slowed down but it looks like they’re picking up again. Over the past couple of months, most of the iPhone 13 reports have kept mentioning 2 things: 120Hz refresh rate and a shorter notch. Well, now we have a new report and even some hands on leaks for these 2 things. Starting with a new report from the Elec which says that Samsung Display will convert their OLED line-up dedicated to Apple into LTPO Displays within the first half of 2021 as, we’re expecting both Pro models to feature this technology that also allows them to run at 120Hz. But, moving on to hotter leaks, we have some new images recovered by MacRumors that show the front glass cover for 3 of the iPhone 13 variants. You can see the significantly smaller notch, and they do show how apple has rearranged Face ID and slimmed down some of the components to achieve this smaller notch. Another thing to notice is how the ear piece on this notch would be next to the phone’s frame, pretty much the design Android Phones have followed for about two years. We will apparently have this for a year as Ming Chi Kuo claims that we could be seeing some punch holes next year.

Qualcomm is working on a Nintendo Switch-like console that runs Android 12: Report

It's only fair to share...Share on RedditShare on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

In October last year, it was reported that Qualcomm was working on a gaming smartphone in partnership with Asus, with both companies said to be considering a joint purchase of components. However, it appears that the gaming-centric device might not be a phone, but a Nintendo Switch-like gaming console that runs Android 12 with a custom launcher on top and access to the full suite of Google’s apps and services that you get on your bread-and-butter Android phone.

Full-HD+ display, TV-out support, detachable controllers, and 5G-ready

As per a report by Android Police that cites sources familiar with the matter, the Qualcomm device will have detachable controllers a la the Joycons on Nintendo’s handheld console. And just like the Nintendo Switch, Qualcomm’s Android-powered console will let you connect it with a TV and play games on a larger screen. As per XDA-Developers Editor-in-chief Mishaal Rahman, the device will feature a 6.5-inch FHD+ display and will support a fan as well. Oddly, it won’t let you make calls, or do your regular telephony stuff.

The gaming-centric gadget will reportedly be fitted with a 6,000mAh battery that supports the proprietary Quickcharge fast charging technology. By opting for a larger handheld console form factor, Qualcomm is getting rid of the cramped space issue in today’s thin and light phones which prove to be an issue when it comes to managing heat. The upcoming console will reportedly exploit the extra space it gets to make the SoC powering it run faster and more efficiently by evading the thermal throttling issue.

6,000mAh battery with fast charging support, but no camera or calling facility

Notably, Qualcomm’s handheld console is said to be missing out on cameras. The chipmaker is reportedly eyeing a Q1 2022 release for its gaming-centric device. 5G will be a part of the package as well, but Qualcomm will reportedly fit the older X55 5G modem inside the device, and not the more recent X60 modem. Coming to the pricing part, the company is said to be targeting an asking price of around $300, but there is no clarity if that includes the detachable controllers as well.

Qualcomm might use its upcoming handheld console as a reference device to showcase the potential of a new form factor. And now that platforms like Stadia, Microsoft’s xCloud, Amazon’s Luna, and NVIDIA GeForce Now have brought console games to mobile devices – and 5G is there to provide the necessary bandwidth – Qualcomm might be looking to make a statement here that a new class of Android-powered gaming devices should become mainstream. At this point, it is hard to comment on what lies ahead, and it is also plausible that the project might eventually end up in the trash can.

Qualcomm’s chip supply woes are spilling into the smartphone segment

It looks like the massive global semiconductor shortage is finally going to hit the smartphone industry in full force, and the biggest name that is going to feel the heat is Qualcomm. As per a Reuters report, Qualcomm is having a hard time trying to fulfill the demand for its mobile processors, especially the flagship Snapdragon 888 SoC that powers some high-profile phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S21 series.

The flagship segment - driven by Snapdragon 888 SoC - is where things are stretched

However, Qualcomm’s problems are also intertwined with Samsung, as the Korean electronics giant’s chipmaking division is responsible for supplying some key parts to Qualcomm. Plus, the 5nm fabrication process on which the Snapdragon 888 is based on, comes with scalability limitations of its own. Additionally, Samsung’s factory in Texas that makes components such as radio frequency transceivers for Qualcomm was hit by an outage due to snowstorms in the region recently.

The HUAWEI factor

Huawei Mate 40 Pro review

Another reason why the demand for Qualcomm’s chips has suddenly gone through the roof is the misfortunes of HUAWEI. As more people are moving away from HUAWEI smartphones – since they no longer offer access to essential Google services such as Gmail, Maps, and Play Stores – the demand for Android phones powered by Qualcomm chips has gone up. And that is because HUAWEI equipped a lot of its phones, especially the flagships, with its own HiSilicon Kirin family of processors.

Qualcomm aims to enhance your listening experience with Snapdragon Sound tech

As HUAWEI loses charm among buyers, demand for phones with Qualcomm chips has surged

And now that those phones are no longer an attractive option for many buyers, the demand for phones driven by Qualcomm (and MediaTek) chips has suddenly experienced a surge. In the high-end segment, this has directly put a strain on the supply of Snapdragon 888 SoC that powers flagships from Samsung and other Chinese brands such as OPPO and Xiaomi, all of which are trying to fill the void left by HUAWEI.

A tightly-knit supply chain is also to blame here

Qualcomm Snapdragon 888

Qualcomm’s new CEO appointee Christiano Amon recently told investors that the demand it is experiencing for processors outweighs the supply. However, the shortage is not reliant on a single factor, but the whole semiconductor industry as a whole in which the scarcity of one component disturbs the equilibrium – the result of a tightly integrated global supply chain.

Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X65 5G modem brings a promise of 10Gbps internet speeds

Shortage of a few components creates ripples across the industry

For example, Qualcomm’s processors employ power management chips, but owing to the shortage, the company is moving the stock of these chips towards the production of its flagship Snapdragon 888 SoC. While the strategy is sound from a financial perspective, it has negatively affected the production of Qualcomm’s low-end and mid-range smartphone processors.

However, the situation might not improve in the immediate future. And that’s because the semiconductor shortage has also catalyzed panic buying and the prices have also skyrocketed for certain components. And given how the supply chain responds to such lopsided changes, the whole industry – including the domain of smartphones – will have to cope with the shortage.

We also have a ton of more deals on iPads, other Samsung products, Smart Watches, gaming peripherals and more in the links in the description.

Qualcomm aims to enhance your listening experience with Snapdragon Sound tech

Let’s move on to Qualcomm as I think the company is trying to solve one of our major pain points with Bluetooth Audio.. Quality and latency. W e’ve known that the company has been releasing certain audio innovations over the years but now, they’re releasing something new. Yesterday the company announced Snapdragon Sound, which is designed to offer a seamless and immersive audio experience across a wide gamut of products like phones and wearables. Basically, they are aiming to optimize wireless audio in such a way were it feels like wired by adding support for 24-bit audio, better pairing, reduced latency and clear voice quality. Qualcomm claims that this suite of audio innovations is compatible with Bluetooth latency values as low as 89 milliseconds, meaning it’s much better for playing games or streaming content. Now, there is a catch. This is actually more like an ecosystem, so there is a new Qualcomm DAC which brings an array of interesting features, which means you need your phone to include it. Devices featuring the Snapdragon Sound platform should hit the market pretty soon, with Xiaomi being one of the first companies to bring it.

Samsung Galaxy A52 5G launch is around the corner as specs, price get listed by a retailer

Moving on to Samsung, let’s talk about their A line up which isn’t something we usually do but, the Galaxy A51 was the second best selling smartphone of 2020. Yesterday we got some renders of the phone from Evan Blass and now we have more details as it was just listed by a retailer in Saudi Arabia. Going by the listing, this phone features a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED Infinity O Display with a 32MP selfie shooter but, it is not clear if it brings high refresh rate or not. It is tipped to bring the Snapdragon 750G SoC, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage, a 4500 mAh battery along with a quad camera at the back. Speaking of those cameras, apparently you’re getting a 64MP main sensor, along with a 12MP ultra wide, a 5MP macro and a 5MP depth sensor. According to the listing, this phone should be priced at around 439 dollars and it’ll be up for deliveries around March 7, in Saudi Arabia of course. I mean, it sounds pretty solid to me but, those deliveries sound kind of iffy as, we’re expecting the launch date towards the end of March according to previous leaks.

Apple is reportedly readying an ‘iPad Mini Pro’ for a launch later this year

We could soon see iPads and MacBooks with OLED displays

Let’s shift the spotlight over to Apple and, I’m really excited for these updates. We know that the company is making the move to mini-LED displays very soon, pretty much this month with that new iPad Pro we’re expecting. However, a new report from DigiTimes, Cupertino is planning to move on to OLED as soon as next year. And yes, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about this but, it’s nice to see that the leaks for this are remaining consistent so it is something we should expect. Sticking to iPads but moving on to a different report, according to a Korean blog, an “iPad Mini Pro is currently in Part 2 of “Design Stage” after passing the R&D and planning stages. The report mentions that after this it should go through Design Validation Test, meaning that we should be getting this some time this year for sure. Apparently this iPad Mini Pro could rock an 8.3-inch display, reducing the height of the regular iPad Mini but making it slightly wider. Other things we could be getting include a high refresh rate panel, that same dual camera we’ve been getting on the iPad Pro and either a mini-LED or OLED panel. Of course, we should also expect the A14 Bionic along with Apple Pencil support, some time in the second half of 2020.

Story of the day:

Google’s upcoming launches: Pixel-Buds in mid-April, a phone on June 11

Finally, for the hottest news today, let’s talk about Google.. Because once those Pixel leaks start.. They can’t stop. Last week we had some images of the Pixel 5a from OnLeaks, showing off the whole design but, we were expecting it to drop around August with Android 12. Well, now we have a new tweet from Jon Prosser, where he claims that we should wait for new Pixel Buds coming in mid-April and then Google scheduled a phone announcement for June 11th but, he’s not sure which one it is. The reason we’re mentioning the 5a is because of that leak we got last week, along with the fact that this is closer to the original Pixel 3a’s launch date when compared to the 4a from last year. According to OnLeaks, this phone brings a 6.4-inch OLED display at FHD+, along with a larger stove at the back that houses a 12MP primary camera and a 16MP ultra wide lens. Other features include a headphone jack… yaayyy…, 5G, the same fingerprint scanner at the back and the punch hole at the front. So, it looks like Google is getting rid of the smaller Pixel “a” phone and refreshing the Pixel 4a 5G, which makes sense considering their flagship is a smaller device. We’ll see what we get as, we’re still a couple of months away and, if it’s Google it’ll most likely be leaked.

Qualcomm’s popular Snapdragon 765 is getting a successor that just got leaked

After kickstarting the 5G smartphone wave with the flagship Snapdragon 800-series chips, Qualcomm turned its attention to the mid-range segment to make 5G phones more accessible. And one chipset, in particular, that saw widespread adoption was the Snapdragon 765/7565G since its launch back in December of 2019. After a successful run powering some popular devices such as the OnePlus Nord, Qualcomm is now preparing a successor called Snapdragon 775 / 775G, and its key details have now been allegedly leaked.

Qualcomm's upcoming mid-range chipset makes the jump to 5nm process

The details, which allegedly come from leaked presentation slides, suggest that Qualcomm is again readying two variants of the upcoming chipset – the vanilla Snapdragon 775 and a slightly beefier Snapdragon 775G version. Notably, it will be based on the 5nm process, which has so far been limited to flagship SoCs such as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888, Samsung’s Exynos 2100, and Apple’s Bionic A14 powering the iPhone 12 series.

Coming to the core architecture, the Snapdragon 775/775G duo will employ custom Kryo 600-series cores, but the core configuration remains a mystery at this point. It will support LPDDR4X memory ticking at 2400MHz as well as the faster LPDDR5 standard clocked at 3200MHz – and dual-channel UFS 3.1 memory.

And to handle the imaging department, Qualcomm will arm the Snapdragon 775/775G with Spectra 570 ISP that supports 4K video recording at 60FPS. Additionally, it allows simultaneous capture from triple 28MP cameras or a 60MP+20MP setup.

Snapdragon 775/775G will bring support for 4K 60FPS video capture and Wi-Fi 6E

Coming to the connectivity department, Qualcomm is upping the ante by adding support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth ‘Milan’ – which likely is the code for Bluetooth v5.2 standard. It will also bring support for dual-mode 5G (SA + NSA) in both Sub-6 GHz and mmWave flavors.

From the looks of it, the Snapdragon 775/775G appears to be quite a capable SoC, but it is unclear when it comes out and what phones will it drive. Moreover, it looks like a true Snapdragon 765/765G successor, as the freshly-launched Snapdragon 768G didn’t bring meaning many meaningful upgrades to the table and was based on the older 7nm EUV process.

Qualcomm aims to enhance your listening experience with Snapdragon Sound tech

Qualcomm has been toying with audio-related innovations for a while now, with one of its most well-known products being the aptX audio codec that aims to offer an enhanced audio output across a wide range of devices. Now, the company is doubling down on its efforts to further boost the listening experience with a whole suite of audio innovations and software that it calls Snapdragon Audio.

The chipmaker notes that Snapdragon Audio has been designed to offer a seamless and immersive audio experience across a wide gamut of consumer electronics such as phones and wearables, covering everything from your regular voice calls to chatting in a game. And of course, music streaming too.

Qualcomm notes that with Snapdragon Sound, it aims to address issues such as connectivity disruptions, audio dropouts and related glitches, latency, bad compression quality, etc. – all of which combine to deteriorate the audio experience. The company aims to achieve it by optimizing the interaction between Qualcomm technology stacks.

So, what exactly does Snapdragon Sound has to offer in the end? Well, you get support for high-resolution 24-bit audio (96kHz), more robust pairing, reduced latency, and clear voice quality, something that is of prime importance while playing multiplayer games over a patchy network.

Qualcomm says its suite of audio innovations is compatible with Bluetooth latency values that are as low as 89 milliseconds, something that can make a tangible difference while playing games and streaming video content. And in case you’re concerned about the audiophile aspect, Snapdragon Sound comes with the proprietary Qualcomm Aqstic DAC that brings support for up to 384kHz, 31-bit PCM (Pulse Code Modulation), and DSD (Direct Stream Digital) with ultra-low THD (Total Harmonic Distortion).

Devices that support Qualcomm’s latest innovation will soon hit the market with a Snapdragon Sound badge for the sake of identification. Xiaomi is among the first names to bring it to smartphones, while Audio-Technica will soon offer certified audio devices. Amazon has even created a whole playlist (on Amazon Music HD, of course) to showcase the superior sound quality that Snapdragon Sound brings to the table.

Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X65 5G modem brings a promise of 10Gbps internet speeds

Let’s move on to Qualcomm as, the company just announced the new Snapdragon X65 5G Modem which brings some crazy promises. This is the 4th generation for the company’s flagship modems if you think of it. The biggest promise here is that it brings 10 Gigabit 5G to the table thanks to a new Fixed Wireless Access Platform, becoming the first modem-RF system in the world to reach these numbers. This modem features an upgradeable architecture which will adapt via software updates, making it kind of future proof. Qualcomm also brings a new 4th-Gen mmWave antenna that claims to boost mmWave coverage as well as power efficiency, while supporting higher transmit power. It also relies on an AI Antenna Tuning technology to improve cellular performance and efficiency, letting you achieve faster speeds with better battery life. And guys, there’s actually a ton of more technical details and a full article at Pocketnow.com, I won’t bore you with the specifics but yeah, it all sounds *PRETTY* amazing.

Apple’s upcoming Mixed Reality headset gets concept rendered. Hey, Ready Player One!

Apple partners with TSMC to develop micro OLED display for its AR devices: Report

Now it’s time for Apple’s Mixed and Augmented Reality devices which have been making a lot of headlines. First off, we have some new concept renders which were created based on that sketch we got of them last week, which *I Agree*, look like a pair of AirPods Max laid down. In the visor you can tell from the outside that there’s multiple sensors and cameras that kind of look like Face ID but, these will reportedly keep track of you’re surroundings while you’re using the headset. From the inside you see the 2 displays which will reportedly be 8K panels, as well as a cushion and a slot for you’re nose. *I agree*, all seriously looks like if it came out of Ready Player One. Now, speaking of those 8K displays on the inside, we have a new report from Nikkei Asia that claims that Apple has tasked TSMC with developing micro-OLED displays that will be used in Augmented Reality Devices. These displays won’t be built into glass like you get with smartphones. Apparently, they will be built directly into wafers, and I also thought about cookies first, but this allows for the displays to be far thinner, smaller and more power efficient. Apparently the production of these displays is currently in trial phase, and mass production will actually take a few years to begin. We’ll see what we get and how much exactly is “a few years”.

More Galaxy Z Fold3, Galaxy Z Flip2 details surface online

Moving the spotlight on to foldables, let’s talk Samsung which should have a pretty busy year. Recent leaks claim that we could have the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 as soon as July so naturally, leaks are starting to come in. Now we have a new report from Sam Mobile that gives us more details on what to expect. On the report, they shared the model number for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 along with the fact that it will be available with at least 256GB of storage, running Android 11 out of the box with a new One UI 3.5 on top. When it comes to the Z Flip 3, they shared the model number as well and it’ll apparently bring 128GB and 256GB storage options and running the same software combo. Back to the Z Fold, recently we got some renders that claimed that we should expect the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s camera module as well as an under the display selfie shooter but, we should take that with a grain of salt. What we are expecting is slightly smaller displays, in order to fit an S Pen inside the chassis. As for the Z Flip 3, we’re expecting it to bring a 120Hz display with slimmer bezels, and a design that resembles the regular S21 models. We don’t have much other information on the Z Flip or the rumored Z Flip Lite but, we’ll see what we end up getting.

Story of the day:

Leak suggests Google is drawing inspiration for Android 12 from iOS 14’s privacy tools

And finally, for the hottest news today, let’s talk Android 12 as we’re getting closer to the announcement at least. A couple of recent reports claimed that Google wants to take a play out of Apple’s privacy book and well, we have some kind of confirmation now. We have some new screenshots of Android 12 recovered by XDA that show a few familiar changes if you’re rocking iOS 14. On the top right corner, you now get a green dot if the camera is being used, or an orange dot if the microphone was used recently. Google is also adding toggles for universally disabling the camera and microphone on the interface which is actually more than what Apple offers. Another change that resembles iOS 14 comes with the new widgets interface, *who would’ve thought*. But seriously, these now offer a cleaner look which allows for things to look better organized, instead of rounded corners on some and sharp ones on others. Going back a little to privacy, last week we covered how Google also wants to implement App Tracking Transparency but in less of a strict way than what Cupertino will bring with iOS 14.5. Keep in mind, these screenshots have not been confirmed and we’re still months away but, I mean privacy changes are always welcomed, especially from Google.

Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X65 5G modem brings a promise of 10Gbps internet speeds

Qualcomm has lifted the overs from its 4th gen 5G modem – the Snapdragon X65 modem, that succeeds the X60 found in last year’s flagships. The biggest promise with Qualcomm’s latest offering is that it brings 10 Gigabit 5G to the table – the first 5G modem-RF system in the world to reach those numbers. Additionally, the company has also launched the slightly toned-down Snapdragon X62 5G modem as well. Both the new Qualcomm offerings are currently in the sampling phase and will appear in commercially available devices such as smartphones by late 2021.

There's a new mmWave antenna module that is said to boost mmWave coverage and power efficiency

Talking about the key advancements introduced by the Snapdragon X65 Modem-RF system, it features an upgradeable architecture that will adapt to the new 3GPP Release 16 standard via software updates. What this essentially means is Qualcomm’s new 5G modem is future-proof too. And to go with it, Qualcomm has also come up with QTM545 fourth-generation mmWave antenna module that is claimed to boost mmWave coverage and power efficiency as well, aside from supporting higher transmit power.

The Snapdragon X65 modem is also touted to be the first in the world to rely on an AI Antenna tuning technology to further improve cellular performance and efficiency to achieve faster data speeds and longer battery life.  There’s also a next-gen power tracking solution that is smaller, yet offers higher performance. Qualcomm says that its latest offering also relies on frequency division duplex (FDD) and time division duplex (TDD across the mmWave and Sub-6GHz bands for the most comprehensive spectrum aggregation.

Qualcomm 5G Fixed Wireless Access Platform Gen2

Snapdragon X65 is first in the world to use an AI Antenna tuning technology

In addition to the new 5G modems, Qualcomm has also announced its second-gen 5G Fixed Wireless Access Platform that also brings 10Gbps support to the table. The upgraded platform will let telecom operators offer fixed internet broadband services to homes and businesses using their 5G infrastructure.

It also features the new extended-range Qualcomm QTM547 mmWave antenna module and is touted to be the first in the world to offer 5G sub-6 GHz support with eight receive (RX) antennas. Following are a few key features of Qualcomm’s next-gen 5G Fixed Wireless Access Platform:

Lastly, Qualcomm has also introduced a slew of RF Front End (RFFE) solutions targeted at 5G mobile devices. Here’s the fresh portfolio that Qualcomm has unveiled:
