Realme 8 Pro preview: The competition is too damn hard

It's only fair to share...Share on RedditShare on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

Realme 8 Pro is here as a direct competitor to the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max (review). The USP of this device is its 108MP primary camera. But is it enough? When compared to the Redmi offering, what I miss the most on this phone is a high refresh rate. It sports an AMOLED display but is stuck at 60Hz. While the competitor offers a recent chipset, the Realme counterpart comes with a processor that can be found on its predecessor.

The intro might give you an impression that there is not much going on for the Realme 8 Pro, but that’s not the case. It supports 50W fast charging and an in-hand feel that could shame some humongous flagships. Here are more details in our Realme 8 Pro preview.

120Hz is dearly missed

The Realme 8 Pro features a 6.4-inch AMOLED display with a full-HD+ resolution and an in-display fingerprint scanner. The display doesn’t offer a 120Hz refresh rate like the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max, and isn’t the brightest out there but gets the job done. The colors are vibrant but you are likely to experience some stutters in the UI. I enjoyed watching YouTube videos, and it is perfectly fine for content consumption.

Realme 8 Pro cameras

One of the most comfortable devices to hold in the segment

The power and volume buttons are located on the right side, while the SIM tray with two Nano-SIM slots and a dedicated microSD card slot lies on the left. Further, the buttons are easy to reach and clickable like you’d expect from a device priced at INR 17,999. Plus, it comes with a 3.5mm audio jack that lies at the bottom alongside the primary microphone, USB Type-C port, and speaker at the bottom, while the top only has the secondary microphone.

On the back lies a quad camera setup that lies in a square camera module. It sports a textured finish with “Dare to Leap” tag line plastered across the back in glossy finish. You might or might not like the tagline imprint but it does give the smartphone a unique look that distinguishes it from other devices. The Realme 8 Pro is one of the most comfortable one-hand smartphones in the segment. Plus, the textured back helps keep fingerprints at bay. This is one of the phones that I can recommend using without a case – even when it is supplied with the device in the box.

Realme 8 Pro in sunlight

The smartphone packs a 4,500mAh battery that supports 50W fast charging. I like the presence of faster-than-usual fast charging that helps in a quick top-up. I’ve been using it for four days and it lasts me a day with my use case – mostly social media browsing. While some brands are excluding chargers from the box, Realme is providing a 65W charger for a device that supports 65W fast charging.

Realme 8 Pro preview

Coming to the USP of the smartphone, you get a 108MP primary camera that captures detailed images in bright daylight. The dynamic range is satisfactory as well. You also get an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera that captures colors that are slightly different from the ones captured on the primary camera. Then there is a 2MP macro camera, which captures vibrant images but lacks details, especially when compared to the 5MP camera sensor on the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max, which I called “the best in the segment” in the review. There is also a 2MP back and white sensor. You can check out the samples below:

The Realme 8 Pro is powered by the Snapdragon 720G SoC, which seems dated in 2021. While the daily life performance is fine, you do come across some stutters in the UI. Further, it comes in 6GB and 8GB RAM options with 128GB of storage. The smartphone runs Realme UI 2.0 with Android 11. It is clean and simple to use. I like the usability on offer here.

To conclude, the Realme 8 Pro isn’t a bad device but the competition is too damn hard. It sports a 108MP primary sensor, the fast charging on offer is great, plus, it is comfortable to hold. But is it enough to compete? Time will tell.

Connectivity options include dual-band Wi-Fi, 4G, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a USB Type-C port. Sensors on board the Realme 8 Pro include ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, magnetic induction sensor, accelerometer, and gyro-meter sensor. The smartphone packs a 4,500mAh battery that supports 50W SuperDart Charge fast charging technology. However, you get a 65W fast charger in the box. The smartphone measures 160.6×73.9×8.1mm and weighs 176 grams.

The smartphone is priced at INR 17,999 for 6GB + 128GB variant. On the other hand, the 8GB + 128GB model costs INR 19,999.  It comes in Infinite Black and Infinite Blue color options.

Realme 8 Pro seems plenty similar to the Realme 7 Pro as per leaked specs

Realme is gearing up to launch its 8 series. The Realme 8 and Realme 8 Pro are all set to be launched on March 24. Ahead of the official unveiling, key specifications of the Realme 8 Pro have appeared online. While it is confirmed to sport a 108MP primary camera, other specifications seem to remain modest.

YouTuber Tech Spurt released an unboxing video of the Realme 8 Pro launch on March 24. It revealed a a yellow rectangular box, which comes with a 65W SuperDart charger, a USB Type-A to Type-C cable, a clear silicone phone case, a SIM ejector tool, documentation, and the phone itself. The phone seems to have ‘Dare to Leap’ tagline embossed in big letters. Physically, you can also note a 3.5mm audio jack at the bottom.

On the other hand, specs of the device have been leaked on Twitter. A tipster with the username @Gadgetsdata tweeted key details of the upcoming smartphone. As per the tweet, the Realme 8 Pro will feature a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display with 60Hz refresh rate. It could be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G SoC. Both of these specs are same as the Realme 7 Pro. The only big difference in this generation seems to be coming in the form of a 108MP primary camera. Other two sensors are tipped to be of 8MP (ultrawide) + 2MP + 2MP.

As per the tipster, the Realme 8 Pro will pack a 4,500mAh battery and support 50W fast charging – despite packing an alleged 65W fast charger in the box. Further, it is expected to be a 4G phone – much like its competitor, the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max in India.

While the Realme 8 Pro is tipped to feature a Super AMOLED display, it seems to be missing out on a high refresh rate. However, these are just leaked specifications, and the company hasn’t revealed anything yet apart from the 108MP sensor.

Realme adds a 108MP camera to its upcoming mid-ranger with new tricks in tow

In the past couple of years, Oppo spin-off Realme has launched some competitively-priced phones across a wide spectrum, and has really taken the fight to Xiaomi when it comes to offering high-end features on a budget. Now, the company has announced that it will equip the upcoming Realme 8 Pro with a 108MP primary camera, which is quite an achievement considering the price segment it will fall under. In addition to the massive camera resolution bump, the company is also supporting it with neat photography tricks too.\

The 108MP Samsung ISOCELL HM2 sensor performs 9-in-1 Pixel binning

Starting with the hardware, Realme says it is going to use the 108MP Samsung ISOCELL HM2 camera sensor with a 1/1.52-inch sensor which was launched in September last year. Armed with 0.7μm-sized pixels, this one employs Nonacell (9-in-1) pixel-binning, merging nine 0.7μm pixels into one large 2.1μm super-pixel to capture a brighter and more detailed image.

Realme 108MP

This sensor is also capable of combining three images taken at different exposure levels to produce mote detailed HDR images in real-time. It supports 4K video capture at 120FPS and even 8K video recording at a cinematic 24fps. While the camera sensor in itself is quite impressive, Realme is offering more tricks on top of it to make the budget Realme 8 Pro stand out for its photography prowess.

The company says that the Realme 8 Pro will be the first phone in the world to offer what it calls tilt-shift time-lapse photography on smartphones, complete with a 10x faster playback experience. The tilt-shift mode converts real-world scenes into what looks like a miniaturized landscape. The Starry Mode for night-time sky photography has also been upgraded, and it is now said to be capable of brightening the stars as well for a more crisp picture.

Realme 108MP announcement

Additionally, the 108MP camera on Realme 8 Pro will also introduce three new Portrait mode effects viz. Neo, Dynamic Bokeh, and AI Color portrait. Check out the camera samples in the tweet below to see what these new modes are all about. Looking over at the competition, rival-in-chief Xiaomi has also promised to launch a budget Redmi Note 10 series phone packing a 108MP camera later this week.

Realme Koi specs and images surface online

Realme recently teased a new smartphone, Realme Koi. While some rumors suggest it to be the company’s first Snapdragon 888-powered smartphone, others say it will be a mid-range device. It could be part of an upcoming series from Realme that could also include a top-end model codenamed Realme Race, which will be powered by the Snapdragon 888 chipset. Amidst the confusion, the specifications and images of Koi have leaked online.

The leak comes from Twitter, where a tipster named Abhishek Yadav tweeted the details of the upcoming Realme Koi. His tweet also included some live images of the device. The phone could also be called Realme V15, depending on the market. As per the leaked images, it will have a triple rear camera setup. It also appears to have a gradient finish similar to that on the Realme Q2 and Realme X7 Pro.

Realme Koi back

According to the tipster, the Realme Koi will be powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 800U SoC. It is rumored to sport a 64MP primary rear camera, which could be accompanied by two more sensors. The phone is tipped to weigh 176 grams. Moreover, it is said to have support for 50W fast charging. There is no fingerprint sensor on the back. Hence, we expect the phone to either have an in-display biometric scanner or a side-mounted sensor.

Flagship to be or not to be

While Realme hasn’t provided any details of Realme Koi apart from a teaser, other rumors on Weibo suggest that the phone could be launched as a flagship phone. Moreover, it could have support for 125W UltraDART fast charging. It is also speculated to have a special edition with a leather back. By contrast, a rumor says it could be part of a new series by Realme, which could also have a Snapdragon 888-powered smartphone. Clearly, we’ll have to wait and watch to get more information on the device.
