The OPPO X rollable phone looks great in a new video

It seems that foldable smartphones are on the way to becoming the new standard. More and more OEMs are starting to get on the foldable phone train, as reports and rumors suggest that we may get foldable devices from Apple, Xiaomi, OPPO, and more. However, some companies seem to have progressed more than others, as some of them are already showing what their prototypes can do, and that’s precisely what has happened with the OPPO X rollable prototype phone.

OPPO has once again given us a hint as to what we can expect from their future foldable smartphones. The company has released a Concept Phone Full Tech video of its OPPO X rollable device at MWC Shanghai 2021. The video explains how the device will come equipped with a rollable display that will go from 6.7 to 7.4-inches, thanks to its two roll motors. These would make the ‘Warp Track’ laminate that resembles a cambelt, which is made of high-strength steel that allows it to be tough enough to support the display. At the same time, that’s incredibly thin, as it measures 0.1mm at its thinnest spot.

The display will also be supported by a 2-in-1 plate, whether it’s retracted or extended. This support is made of metal strips that mesh together, which allows them to slide past each other when they are required to.

Now, we know that there’s a difference between foldable phones and the OPPO X, as this is a rollable phone concept. Whatever the case, we will most likely see Samsung OLED foldable panels in either form factor. We know that Samsung Display will most likely supply every major brand with foldable displays, including Apple and Google. However, we won’t find them in the recently launched Huawei Mate X2, since the Chinese tech giant finally decided to work with BOE. So now, we only have to wait and see if this device makes it to the market.

onor could unveil a foldable phone this year

Now let’s talk about the future of Honor. The company has actually been quite active this year after Huawei sold the brand. Today we have a new statement from the company’s CEO where he does mention that Huawei’s sanctions no longer affect them, with other reports claiming that they have allegedly made new deals with Qualcomm, MediaTek and even Google. Earlier this week we heard how they might be preparing 2 different line ups with Google Play Services but apparently, that’s not all. The company’s CEO mentions that they will soon launch a “flagship series” like the Mate and the P line ups from Huawei and even a foldable phone under the Magic branding;. Actually, a leak from Weibo claims that we should expect the first series of folding screen phones later this year. Speaking of foldables, it looks like this year they’ll probably become more mainstream, with Xiaomi reportedly working on 3, OPPO working on 1 and Samsung working on 3 as well, including a Z Flip Lite. We’ll see what we get from Honor though as, it should be good, but outer folding has proven to not be a good idea.

We could see batteries used as haptic engines in a future Apple Watch

Let’s move on to Cupertino and the Apple Watch as, it looks like the company is looking to shake things up.. You’ll get that in a second. The company just filed a new patent to the USPTO where they would make the Apple Watch thinner, by removing the haptic feedback engine. However, since the haptic feedback is so essential to the Apple Watch’s User experience, Apple plans to use the battery to take over that roll. The patent describes a “moving battery component” which will provide the haptic feedback. Now, by removing the haptic engine this might also allow for a larger battery, improving battery life in the process, unless Apple has other plans. But yeah, this is just a patent and we know that Apple is notorious for patenting stuff and never releasing it so, we’ll see what we actually end up getting with the next Apple Watch as, so far the only other rumor we’ve heard is the blood glucose monitor. Does anyone remember the days when if you wanted your Nokia phone to vibrate you needed to buy a special battery that did so? No one? I know.. I’m that old.

Samsung might soon debut its own rollable phone too

Moving back a little bit to Samsung, let’s actually talk foldables, since in the Honor segment we discussed that the company is working on 3. It seems we should expect big upgrades with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, a Z Flip 3 (3 is for the names to match) and the rumors have it that we’ll be getting a Galaxy Z Flip Lite, making foldables more affordable. But, it looks like foldables isn’t the only market Samsung plans to roll into. I know, Diego is full of puns today. Well, Samsung Display’s VP just said during an earnings call that they plan to “fortify their presence in the display market through innovative form factors such as rollable and sliding displays”. Now, he didn’t specify that these are for smartphones as, we know that Samsung Display does much more. However, we have a patent that was filed by Samsung back in 2019 that shows a smartphone screen that slides down and back into the device. Once it slides down it reveals the selfie camera and other sensors, probably for facial recognition. Of course, there’s no guarantee that we’ll be getting one of these any time soon but, with LG possibly leaving this market, would you like to see a rolling or sliding phone from Samsung?

Story of the day:

Apple is testing optical in-screen fingerprint sensor for its upcoming iPhones

iPhone 13 Pro could have a 1TB storage variant

Finally, for the hottest news today let’s talk iPhone 13, or 12S. Yes, I know Apple hasn’t done an S in 2 years, but I’m sure you understand what I mean about iterative updates. We’ve heard multiple reports that overlap so far, like the smaller notch or the on-display fingerprint scanner, as well as the 120Hz refresh rate. Now, we have a new report from IT-Home claiming that the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max could get up to 1TB of storage. Just for reference the current Pro models can go up to 512GB and Apple hasn’t added more storage in 2 generations. Yesterday, Jon Prosser also mentioned that there are some prototypes at the moment with the added storage but, it will only happen for the Pro models. He also called it 12S in the video so, interesting huh. Finally, we also got some new renders of the phone by LetsGoDigital and Concept Creator who always does a great job. These renders are for the iPhone 13 Pro and they show a very familiar design, with the boxy build and pretty much the same camera module as, we’re only expecting internal changes for the camera. Probably the biggest change from last year is the shorter notch, which won’t be narrower according to multiple reports. These renders also show yet another courageous move from Apple, with no charging port at the bottom, and we wouldn’t be surprised considering how much they’re currently pushing MagSafe. Both of these reports also mention Wi-Fi 6E integration, which we talked about a couple of days ago.

Samsung might soon debut its own rollable phone too

After foldables, it looks the smartphone industry is slowly moving towards foldable panels. TCL set the ball rolling with its rollable phone tablet hybrid last year (though it never made it into the hands of consumers) and showcased yet another concept at CES 2021. LG has also promised to launch its own Project Explorer device will a sliding display, and Oppo has also showcased its own version as well. It now appears that Samsung is next to jump the bandwagon, as a senior Samsung Display executive has confirmed that the South Korean electronics giant is working on slideable and rollable panels.

We’ll promote our market expansion for foldable displays. In the meantime, we’ll also fortify our presence in the display market to innovative form factors such as rollable and slideable displays,” KwonYoung Choi, Senior VP of Samsung Display, said during the company’s recent earnings call. “The Company will further solidify its leadership in the OLED market and diversify applications across note PCs, tablets, and automotive,” the company wrote in its Q4 2020 earnings call announcement.

Now, it is worth noting here that the Samsung executive did not mention whether these rollable and slideable display panels will be used for smartphones or a large screen product such as TVs. But considering the fact that rollable phones from various brands are already in the pipeline and the vision is very much feasible to achieve as a mass-market device, Samsung would definitely not want to be left behind.

Plus, TVs with a rollable display have a much lesser mass-market appeal and come with an outrageous price tag. Just take the example of LG’s roll-up TV that costs somewhere around $60,000. Samsung is already the market leader when it comes to foldable phones, and right now, rollable and slideable phones look like the perfect opportunity for Samsung to flex its hardware innovation muscle and take an early lead in a nascent segment.

Taking a break from the Apple Deals, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is back at $200 off, that’ll leave you the US variant with 128GB of storage for $1099. We also have a ton of other deals in the description and in the full list at Pocketnow.com.

This is the OnePlus 8T Cyberpunk 2077 Limited Edition

Now let’s talk about special edition phones, which we really weren’t expecting during a year that’s anything but special. Well, about a week ago, OnePlus teased their first collaboration since they parted ways with McLaren with a Cyberpunk 2077 OnePlus 8T. Well, it’s finally official and it’s very different to say the least. It pretty much brings the same specs as the vanilla 8T except for some extra RAM, storage and the software skin they usually add to their limited edition phones. Where things get different is with the design, the whole top of the phone is a camera visor, like if the Galaxy S20 Ultra was on steroids and it includes a “NetRunner 2077 Edition” Logo, as well as a barcode for the game. It comes in a yellow box along with a pretty cool case that let’s you feel the different textures, though a yellow charger would’ve been nice to see. It’s available for pre-orders in China for around $597, sadly no word on international availability.

Upcoming Snapdragon 875 to be significantly faster than the competition

It’s finally Techvember, which means we’re closer to December, which means we’re finally getting closer to the latest Snapdragon flagship SoC. Well, the possible Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 which is codenamed “Lahaina” just went through some AnTuTu benchmarks, showing off it’s improvements. It scored almost 847,000, a 25% jump over the 865 which scored 663,000 points. Just for context, the iPhone 12 scored 565,000 and the latest Kirin and Exynos score around the 696,000 mark, which means the Snapdragon 875 is significantly superior to all of these but of course, these are just benchmarks. According to AnTuTu, the RAM and storage configurations have a lot to do with final scores so, we’ll wait to see what we get once we actually get the chip. We’re getting closer to Qualcomm’s Summit so, let’s see what the company has in store because this sound great.

This could be LG’s new ‘Project B’ rollable smartphone

Now let’s shift focus to LG cause they’ve clearly been busy lately. Last week we covered how the company had two phones in the pipeline, a new V Series device and “Project B” which is part of their Explorer Project. Project B is reportedly that rollable phone they showed at the Wing’s announcement and, according to these new patents, that’s what we’re getting. These patents show that the phone will look like a regular phone when it’s in its normal state, kind of like the Wing but less clunky. Then you’ll be able to extend the frame from the sides, basically turning your phone into a tablet. LG will apparently be using saw gears and other elastic components, as well as a mechanism to help the phone roll out smoothly. We know that the Wing is mainly aimed at productivity but with this form factor, it might be aimed at content consumption. Honestly, it looks pretty good and, we’re supposed to be getting it sometime in March next year.

We could soon get a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 FE, possible Galaxy S21 availability leaked

Over the years we’ve gotten a couple of “Fan Edition” phones from Samsung, with the latest one being a more affordable version of the Galaxy S20. You should definitely go watch my review which will be right up here by the way. Well, it looks like the company doesn’t want to stop with these. On typical Samsung Fashion, the Galaxy S20 FE’s landing page for Samsung Brazil includes several mentions for a Galaxy Note 20 FE. The fine print states that the Note 20 FE has a 6.5in screen or a 6.3in diagonal when you take into account the rounded corners. Now, this could simply be a typo considering this is the size for the S20 FE but, there’s other multiple mentions of this Note 20 FE. On the other one they detail the benefits of Night Mode, even showing some pictures. Of course, all of this might just be speculation due to a typo but Samsung is known to leak stuff by themselves so, are you guys interested in a Galaxy Note 20 FE? Cause it kind of feels like they should just drop the price for the regular variant.

Story of the day:

Apple has announced a new ‘One more thing’ event for November 10

Apple is working on a redesigned iMac and Mac Pro with in-house silicon: Report

And finally for the hottest news today let’s talk Apple. Can we just be honest and say Cupertino has been really busy this year when it comes to event and there is another coming. The company just sent out press invitations for a “One More Thing” Event that will happen on November 10th at 10AM PST. Going through the checklist, we already got the iPhones, new iPads, and the Watches, so all we’re waiting for is Apple Silicon Macs which seems like a pretty obvious option for a “One More Thing”. There’s been a ton of speculation and reports on what we’re going to get. A new LoveToDream tweet reads, 13in Times 2, hinting to two different models. Back in July Ming Chi Kuo also said that we’d be getting an updated 14.1in and a 16.1in MacBook Pro model, and that other model LoveToDream is teasing might be a new MacBook Air. Now, staying with Macs but speculating ahead, there’s also a new report from Bloomberg that claims that Apple is also developing a new Mac Pro that looks like the current cheese grater, but it will bring a smaller form factor that’s about half the size. As of right now, we don’t know if this model will replace the current Mac Pro or if it will launch as an additional model and this could be due to the new Apple Silicon chips. Sadly, the report also mentions that this Mac Pro isn’t coming out in 2020, and could happen either next year or until 2022. We still hope that we might see AirTags or AirPods Studio at this Event but, I guess we’ll have to wait a little bit more.

This could be LG’s new ‘Project B’ rollable smartphone

LG is working hard to make the smartphone world a bit more exciting. Last week we received rumors that the company is allegedly working on a new smartphone with a rollable device, which is currently known as Project B. This device is rumored to arrive sometime in March, as part of LG’s explorer project, which also includes the LG Wing. However, it seems that we won’t have to wait that long to see the phone’s design, or at least an idea of what we may get, as new leaks have emerged, and they look hot.

Maybe the whole Rollable phone concept wasn’t very clear for some of us, as we weren’t precisely sure ‘how it was going to roll.’ However, the guys over at LetsGoDigital found a patent granted to LG for a smartphone with a rollable display. The patent was filed back in August 2019, and it was published a couple of months ago in September, and it can now be found in the World Intellectual Property Office database.

“Once pulled out, the screen area is enlarged by 100%. The user can also decide to roll out only one way if desired. When pulled out, the left and right frame edges will move with it, so that the rollable display remains well protected by the housing and the user can use the frame edges as a grip.”

The patent documentation describes a device with a retractable frame and an OLED display that will roll out from both sides of the phone. Once both sides of the display are pulled out, the phone’s display area would double. However, LG would users to roll out one side of the device at a time and not both sides every time.

The larger screen surface would make LG’s Project B a great phone for multi-tasking since it would also allow multiple apps displaying side by side in split-screen mode. The phone would also benefit from a retractable screen, as these are more durable than foldable displays since they tend to be more vulnerable at the folding line. We will have to wait and see if LG can really pull it off and if they can also manage to give this new phone stylus support.
