Apple’s iPhone 12 sales did great, but not thanks to the 12 mini

It seems that Apple’s latest iPhone lineup has knocked one out of the park with its latest sales report. The iPhone 12 appears to have accounted for a total of 76 percent of new iPhone sales if we focus on the time period between October and November. However, the smaller, more affordable version didn’t get the attention Apple was hoping for.

According to a new report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), the latest iPhone 12 lineup has done great in sales, taking up more than half of Apple’s new iPhone sales in the last few months after their launch periods. The vanilla iPhone 12 model with a 6.1-inch display was apparently the most popular device, as it managed to take up 27 percent in sales. The 12 Pro and the 12 Pro Max with a 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays reached 20 percent in sales.

If we compare this year’s sales numbers with the ones delivered by the iPhone 11, we will see a clear difference. Last year’s iPhone 11 lineup managed to reach 69 percent of Apple’s total iPhone sales, which also suggests that this year’s iPhone 12 has been more successful in sales in the period after their launch. Still, comparisons may be a bit complicated, as we saw Apple changing its launch strategy during 2020 to cope with the delays caused by the ongoing pandemic.

“Compared to last year’s launch of iPhone 11 models, which accounted for 69% of sales in the period after the launch, the four iPhone 12 models did even better, with 76% of sales. However, there was no clear leader among the new models, with sales evenly distributed among iPhone 12, 12 Pro, and 12 Max. In contrast, in 2019, iPhone 11 had an incredible 39% of sales, with iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max combining for only 30% of sales.”

Unfortunately, the iPhone 12 mini didn’t do as great as the other models, as the smaller 5.4-inch version only managed to reach 6 percent of total iPhone sales during October and November. The reason for this is that the 12 mini arrived with a price tag that wasn’t as appealing to customers, as they decided that the iPhone 11 or the iPhone XR were more attractive.

“The new iPhone mini likely disappointed Apple with only 6% of sales in the period,’ said Mike Levin, CIRP Partner and cofounder. ‘It has most of the same features as the other iPhone 12 models, in a smaller form factor for $699. Its share was just above that of iPhone XR, launched in 2018 and now priced at $499, the one-year old iPhone 11, now selling for $599, and the 2nd generation iPhone SE, launched in April 2020 at $399. It seems that its higher price point compared to those three models limited the iPhone 12 mini appeal.”

Ming-Chi Kuo believes iPhone 12 will dominate upcoming iPhone sales

We are just hours away from the new iPhone 12 lineup presentation, and some experts in the field have already started to give their opinions about which of the four upcoming variants will perform better at sales. Ming-Chi Kuo may be one of the best qualified to give his insight, and according to his expertise, the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 may be Apple’s new sales king.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the vanilla iPhone 12 will take up to 45 percent of Apple’s estimated shipments, with the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini taking from 20 to 25 percent. The higher-end models would be taking 15 to 20 percent in sales each. Indeed the demand for smaller phones has increased, but not necessarily for small screens, so it may be safe to believe that the less expensive 6.1-inch variant will be more popular among Apple fans, as the $699 variant may not meet the demand for a larger display.

The iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max will, of course, come equipped with better hardware and features, but the prices on these devices may not necessarily boost sales. Let’s remember that the 12 mini is expected to start at $699, while the iPhone 12 will start at $799, the 12 Pro will start at $999, and the higher-end iPhone 12 Pro Max will start at $1,099, according to the leaks we have received in the last few days.

“The shipment forecast of 12 series components is 80-85 mn units, higher than 11 series’ 75 mn units in 4Q19. However, we think the demand for 12 series in 4Q20 will be lower than that of the 11 series in 4Q19 because of the shorter sales period. Therefore, the shipment forecast of components in 4Q20 does not reflect the real demand for the 12 series.”

Whatever the case, Kuo also believes that Apple will ship around 85 million units of all iPhone 12 models in Q4 2020, more than the 75 million units reached by the iPhone 12 lineup in Q4 2019. Even though we still have to consider that Apple may miss peak season demand in the US and Europe because of its late launch. The iPhone 12 mini and the 12 Pro Max are also expected to be available until November, which may also help the regular iPhone 12 sell more units, as it is expected to be available for pre-order this Friday.

Now, we will only have to wait and see if Apple fans decide to go for these new iPhones with 5G support, or if they will wait for the iPhone 13 lineup. Next year’s lineup is rumored to include real upgrades such as a 120Hz display, a smaller notch, a significantly better camera, and maybe the return of Touch ID, this time under the phone’s display.

Apple’s annual iPhone shipments grow, as Huawei takes Samsung’s crown

We have received some interesting Q2 reports in the last couple of days. Said reports show us that Apple has increased its sales in China, and Huawei has finally surpassed Samsung’s sales. Now, we have new data shared by Canalys and the IDC that show everything that happened in the Q2 of 2020.

The global smartphone market suffered a 14 to 16 percent decline in Q2 2020, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it was all bad. Apple managed to increase its iPhone sales by 25 percent when compared to the same period last year. According to Canalys, Apple’s smartphone shipments reached 45.1 million, while IDC suggests it was a total of 37.6 million. Whatever the case, Apple saw its sales boosted thanks to the iPhone 11 and the 2020 iPhone SE launch.

“‌iPhone SE‌ will remain crucial to prop up volume this year, amid delays to Apple’s next flagship release,” commented Canalys Analyst, Vincent Thielke. “In China, it had blockbuster results, growing 35% to reach 7.7 million units. It is unusual for Apple’s Q2 shipments to increase sequentially. As well as the new ‌iPhone SE‌, Apple is also demonstrating skills in new user acquisition. It adapted quickly to the pandemic, doubling down on the digital customer experience as stay-at-home measures drive more customers to online channels.

“Senior Canalys Analyst Ben Stanton stated that going forwards “geopolitical uncertainty also hangs over the global smartphone market. Countries are becoming polarized between the interests of the US and China. In India, for example, Chinese companies now face a wave of negative sentiment. Smartphone vendors need to act, and many are already directing funds to brand marketing to highlight their positive impact in a local region.”

Now, Samsung lost its crown against Huawei, at least during the second quarter of 2020, and we still have to wait and see how things evolve as we will soon see the launch of new Galaxy flagships.

Apple’s Q2 numbers show strong iPhone sales in the Chinese market

According to recent data, iPhone sales have skyrocketed in China. The last report from Shanghai’s CINNO Research claims that Apple’s Q2 sales have seen a huge leap when compared to the previous quarter.

It seems that Apple’s presence in the Chinese market is growing steadily. Apple started this year a bit slow, as Apple reported that it had only sold 500,000 phones. However, things have improved thanks to the iPhone 11 and the new iPhone SE, and it seems that Apple has managed to sell 7.4 million units. In other words, Apple has managed to see a 225 percent increase in iPhone sales, which also results in a 62 percent yearly increase. We also see a 32 percent increase when we compare Q2 2020 to Q2 2019. Still, this isn’t enough for Apple to take the crown of phone sales in the Chinese market since Huawei still holds first place with 36.6 million sales, followed by OPPO, vivo, and Xiaomi.

The 2020 iPhone SE has boosted iPhone sales, and helped users upgrade

Apple’s sales and upgrades. This report comes from no other than Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, and its data claims that this device has become an extremely popular device.

According to the latest data from CIRP, we see that the iPhone SE has had great sales success since it was launched back in April. CIPR made an analysis of iPhone sales over the April to June quarter, and it shows that the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max sold about 65 percent of Apple’s iPhone sales. However, the iPhone SE managed to deliver 19 percent in sales during this period, and it has also made up for the sales of older models.

“At the end of this past quarter, Apple has a simpler lineup than in the past, with just the XR, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, and new SE,” suggests CIRP partner and co-founder Josh Lowitz. “At $399 for the base model, SE comes in priced well below the year-old XR, and very successfully replaces the almost three-year-old iPhone 8 models at the entry price point.”

CIRP has also stated that the new iPhone SE has made it more likely for users with older models to upgrade, up to 73 percent.

“These are users who evidently resisted upgrading to newer phones at more attractive price points, such as iPhone 11, last year’s iPhone XR, and even the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, which launched in 2017, as its prices declined over the years.”

Samsung Money by Sofi will come to the US later this summer

Samsung just launched a new mobile money management system which pretty much competes with the Apple Card. It’s called Samsung Money by SoFi but unlike the Apple Card, it isn’t really a credit card. It’s actually more of a bank account or credit union where you get a MasterCard debit card that doesn’t show any of your information and it works with the Samsung Pay app. Your Samsung Money account will be FDIC insured for $1.5M and users benefit from Samsung’s “defense-grade” security from Samsung Knox. It’ll be available later this summer exclusively for US customers who own a Galaxy smartphone, Samsung promises a secure experience with no account fees.

The iPhone 11 is now the most popular smartphone in the world

We got some quarter results from Omdia and it just confirms that Apple made a big dent on the market with the iPhone 11. Last year the iPhone XR was the number 1 smartphone for Q1 with 13.6M units shipped, but this year the iPhone 11 surpassed it with 19.5M units, despite the pandemic. The phone that follows is the Samsung Galaxy A51 which sold 6.8M units and the iPhone XR is still in the top 5 with 4.7M units. Omdia still anticipates however, that smartphone sales will be down for the rest of the year due to the pandemic so numbers might change for Q2.

Google reveals Android 11 Beta Launch Show schedule on June 3. Here’s how to watch

Google is finally releasing the first Public Beta of Android 11 on June 3rd during their Beta Launch Show. If you want, you’ll be able to attend via YouTube through the Android Developers channel. The event will focus on the different announcements related to all the new features coming with Android 11, as well as Q&As with Google experts and more. We were also expecting to hear something about the Pixel 4a but with the recent delays that apparently won’t be the case. You can check for the events details in the links in our description. It’s not clear which devices will support the public beta on day one, but if you’re not using a Pixel, yeah that’s gonna be a tough one.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 could be launched in August, as it reportedly enters mass production

There’s been several rumors that we’ll finally be getting the Galaxy Fold’s successor with the Note 20 this year. Now we got a new report from a South Korean publication that claims that the Fold 2 has just entered mass production. This means we could start getting some official details as early as June. According to the Insiders, the Fold 2 will bring Samsung’s Ultra Thin Glass and it will cost less, despite upgrading to a 120Hz display. Recently we got some patents from Samsung which described how Samsung plans to make Foldables water resistant but it’s not clear if the Fold 2 will bring this feature. The company is expecting to sell 2.5-3M units this year, surpassing the original Fold.

Story of the day:

We may have to wait until November for the iPhone 12 series

It looks like we will have to wait for the iPhone 12 line-up after all this year. According to a new report, this year’s iPhones might be launched until November due to the pandemic. The report also predicts that Apple has 35M units in production for Q2 of 2020 which is 13% lower than what they had last year, but giving the time, we’re not sure if they’re talking about iPhone 12 production, which would be kind of early, or iPhone 11 production which is likely to take a dip. Regardless, we’re expecting 4 different iPhones, all 4 with OLED displays, 5G connectivity, a smaller notch and a boxier design which is reminiscent of the iPhone 4. We’re also hearing of different spec bumps like up to 6GB of RAM in the Pro models and the base storage at 128GB.

The iPhone 11 is now the most popular smartphone in the world

According to a recent study, the iPhone 11 has become the most popular smartphone in the world, a title that was taken away from the iPhone XR.

Omdia has recently posted the results of a study conducted during the first quarter of 2020. Results show that the iPhone 11 has been the most popular device, despite the coronavirus pandemic. It seems that Apple has managed to sell 19.5 million units around the globe.

“For more than five years— even amid shifting conditions in the wireless market and the global economy— one thing has remained consistent in the smartphone business: Apple has taken either the first or second rank in Omdia’s global model shipment ranking. Apple’s success is the result of its strategy to offer relatively few models. This has allowed the company to focus its efforts on a small number of products that appeal to a broad selection of consumers and sell in extremely high volumes.”
Jusy Hong, director of smartphone research at Omdia

The device that follows the iPhone 11 is Samsung’s A51, which sold 6.8 million units globally, while the previous champ dropped to the 5th spot.
