Samsung brings tricks from its latest smartwatch to older Galaxy Watch models

Samsung is bringing some features that made their debut with the Galaxy Watch 3 to its older siblings – the first-gen Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active. The company has started the rollout new software updates for the Galaxy Watch (carrying the build number R810XXU1FUB6) and the Galaxy Watch Active (firmware version R500XXUF1UB5), beginning with users in South Korea and the United States, with a wider release expected to commence soon.

You can now see images sent via a message on your older Samsung smartwatch

Talking about the features, the first one is the ability to see the images in notifications, especially those from messaging apps. Earlier, if an incoming message had images, it simply wouldn’t load the preview on the older version of Tizen OS. Additionally, the AR emoji and the Bitmoji that you’ve created on your phone can now be used on the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active.

The update also adds the ability to get voice-based guidance via your connected audio wearable during your workouts. On a similar note, you will now be able to access cumulative distance and heart rate data in the form of voice input, while your workouts such as running or biking are being automatically tracked.

Voice-based guidance via Bluetooth headsets for your workouts is also here

Furthermore, the update also allows the Galaxy Watch and Watch Active to capture and send a scrolling screenshot you’ve captured on the smartwatch and send it to the connected smartphone automatically. This is one feature that I’ve been waiting to arrive on my older Samsung smartwatch for a while now. The update also brings general system and app performance improvements too.

Earlier this month, Samsung expanded the ECG support on the Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Watch Active2 to more regions in Europe, UAE, and Chile among a total of 31 countries. This came after Samsung finally succeeded in getting the US FDA’s nod for ECG monitoring on the Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Watch Active2.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 gets a new Rose Gold color option

Samsung has quietly added a new color option for the Galaxy Watch Active2 smartwatch to its portfolio and is calling it Rose Gold. One look at the new trim and it is quite evident that it draws its aesthetic inspiration from the Phantom Violet shade of the Galaxy S21 smartphone. Just like the latest Samsung flagship, the Rose Gold color option of the Galaxy Watch Active2 also has a two-tone color scheme, with the strap rocking a vibrant purple shade, while the case is covered in the eponymous rose gold glitter.

Only available in an Aluminum case option, 40mm size, and no LTE

To recall, this new color option has leaked in all its glory back in December. As per Samsung’s official website, the Rose Gold trim of the Galaxy Watch Active2 is only available in 40mm size, and with Bluetooth-only connectivity. What this means is cellular connectivity is not on the table. Also, the case is made of Aluminium, and there isn’t a more premium variant made out of stainless steel. As expected, the internal hardware remains the same. You get a circular 1.2-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels, a capacitive bezel, and is protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass DX+.

Coming to the performance side, the Galaxy Watch Active2 draws power from the dual-core Exynos 9110 SoC ticking alongside 768MB of RAM and 4 gigs of onboard storage. The Samsung wearable rocks an MIL-STD-810G certified build and comes with an IP68 dust and water resistance rating as well. Aside from heart rate tracking, the Galaxy Watch Active2 is also capable of blood pressure monitoring via the Samsung Health Monitor app, and there is support for ECG measurement as well.

Samsung recently added fall detection and VO2 Max measurement support via an update. You get support for tracking fitness-centric activities such as walking, running, cycling, rowing, and swimming among others. A 247mAh battery provides the juice, with Samsung claiming over a day of usage on a single charge. On the software side, you get Tizen-based Wearable OS 4.0, while Bluetooth 5.0 handles the wireless connectivity part. As for the pricing part, the GalaxyWatchActive2 is up for grabs at $249.99 a pop, but the Rose Gold trim is currently not listed on the Samsung US website for purchase.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 appears in a new rose gold trim that arrives next month

We have a new Unpacked event happening next month, which means a lot of new products are on their way to a grand debut. And one of those will be a smartwatch. Not exactly a new smartwatch, but a new color option for a smartwatch that is already available to purchase. We’re talking about the well-received Galaxy Watch Active2 here. Leakster Evan Blass has shared (via Voice) a render of the Galaxy Watch Active2 rocking a rose gold finish complemented by a cool purple strap.

The dual-tone finish and the signature color profile looks familiar, and that’s because we’ve already seen leaked renders of the Galaxy S21 flaunting a similar purple rear panel with rose gold accents around the rear camera island and on the surrounding frame. Aside from the new paintjob though, nothing apparently has changed internally with the Galaxy Watch Active2’s new color option. And if the date on the smartwatch’s screen shown in the leaked render is any indication, the rose gold Galaxy Watch Active2 will break cover on January 14, the same day that the Galaxy S21 family will make its debut.

Leaked Galaxy S21 and Galaxy Watch Active2 renders (Credit: Evan Blass / Voice)

To recall, the Galaxy Watch Active2 is currently available in Black, Gold and Silver dial options with stainless steel and aluminum build materials, and multiple strap colors to choose from. Talking about specs, the Samsung offering has a round display with a touch-sensitive black bezel running around the periphery to control the UI elements. It can automatically recognize seven types of workouts that include swimming and rowing, and comes with IP68 and 5ATM water resistance rating.

On the front, you get a 1.4-inch Super AMOLED (360 x 360 pixels) display with Corning Gorilla Glass DX+ on top for protection. The in-house Exynos 9110 processor is at its heart, while the juice is provided by a 340mAh battery. The Galaxy Watch Active2 runs Tizen Based Wearable OS v4.

Galaxy Watch Active2 has improved since its debut

Lately, Samsung has added more features to the device such as running analysis (to provide details such as asymmetry, regularity, stiffness, vertical oscillation, ground contact time, etc.), fall detection baked into a SOS notification feature, blood pressure monitoring, smart reply, VO2 Max measurement, ability to reply with a Bitmoji and AR emoji stickers, music playback control and scroll capture that automatically sends the screenshot to a paired smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy Watch3 and Watch Active2 get FDA nod for ECG monitoring in the US

Samsung has today announced that the Galaxy Watch3 smartwatch as well as its predecessor, the Galaxy Watch Active2, have finally received the US FDA (United States Food and Drug Administration approval for taking Electrocardiogram (ECG) readings in the US. To recall, both the smartwatches already come equipped with the electrical heart rate sensors for ECG monitoring, but they weren’t marketed as such in the US market pending FDA approval. Now that Samsung has finally got the green signal, the company has released the Samsung Health Monitor companion app for users in the US to take ECG measurement.

            Image: Samsung

“To use the ECG Monitor app, simply take a seat, open up the new Samsung Health Monitor app, and ensure your watch is snug your wrist. Rest your arm on a flat surface, place your fingertip on the top button, and your watch will record an ECG and classify it as either Sinus Rhythm, or AFib,” Samsung explained in its press release. To take ECG reading, users have to install the companion app on a “compatible Galaxy smartphone.” It appears that Samsung is keeping the feature exclusive to its own line-up of smartphones when paired with the Galaxy Watch3 or Watch Active2.

ECG can prove to be a life-saving feature for people with heart conditions as it detects irregular heart rate rhythm for signs of Atrial Fibrillation (AFib), a leading cause of stroke. Once users take their ECG reading, the Samsung Health Monitor app will also let them share a PDF report with their doctor or a concerned individual. To recall, Samsung got the approval for ECG monitoring on the aforementioned smartwatches in South Korea back in May, while its blood pressure monitoring capability was approved a month earlier. Additionally, Galaxy Watch3 can also detect the saturation level of oxygen in their blood, a feature that also made its debut on the Apple Watch Series 6

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 is getting fall detection, VO2 Max, and more features

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 is receiving a new update that brings several new features. It includes updates to health, connectivity, and communication. The company announced the latest development on its website, which states that the update will be available starting today. September 10. It also brings Running Analysis that can provide information like asymmetry, regularity, stiffness, vertical oscillation, and ground contact time. It will help users improve their performance and also reduce injury.

The Galaxy Watch Active2 update brings VO2 Max, smart reply, AR Emoji Stickers, and more. The VO2 Max measurement means you’ll now know the maximum amount of oxygen you can utilize while working out. Moreover, the update brings Fall Detection to the one-year-old smartwatch. This feature sends an SOS to as many as four pre-designated contacts when it detects a potential fall.

            Galaxy Watch Active 2

Coming to communication features, you can now view emoticons and photos right on the smartwatch. Further, you can use the Smart Reply feature to send replies on the go. While receiving a message, the smartwatch will now show your chat history to pick up where the conversation left off. Moreover, Bitmoji Stickers and AR Emoji Stickers can be selected straight from the wearable.

According to Samsung, the new update brings a “more seamless music experience across your devices – from your smartphone to Galaxy Buds device to your smartwatch.” There is a new scroll capture feature that sends an image to your smartphone when you take a screenshot from your Galaxy Watch Active2.

The update is being made available to Bluetooth versions of the Galaxy Watch Active2 initially. The LTE variants will be receiving the update soon. However, the rollout will vary by market or operator.

Samsung Health Monitor app with blood pressure monitoring released for Galaxy Watch Active2

Samsung revealed, back in April, that its Samsung Health Monitor app for the Galaxy Watch Active2 has been certified by South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), allowing the company to market it as a Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) solution for blood pressure measurement. Now, the app has been finally released for Galaxy Watch Active2 users in South Korea.

In order to monitor and measure their blood pressure, users will first have to take a measurement using an over-the-counter blood pressure handcuff. The measurement then has to be fed into the app for calibration. Once its done, users can measure their blood pressure on the go using the smartwatch’s sensors that perform a pulse wave analysis.

Samsung says the Galaxy Watch Active2 uses the calibration data and change in the pressure level in blood vessels to determine the blood pressure. The Samsung Health Monitor app will automatically be installed on the Galaxy Watch Active2 following the latest software update. The company says Electrocardiogram (ECG) tracking will also be enabled on the Galaxy Watch Active2 in Q3 2020.

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Watch Active stops by FCC, revealing some juicy details

And speaking of my smartwatch of choice, we have some new leaks for the upcoming Galaxy Watch which we’re expecting to see in August. It just went through a new certification from the FCC revealing some new specs. We have two new sketches, the new Galaxy Watch will bring a 45mm stainless steel case, and it should also come in titanium and aluminum. It brings GPS and LTE connectivity and it will allegedly simply be called Galaxy Watch. However, we also have a sketch for the Galaxy Watch 2 but it doesn’t show the full name either or much details about it. So yeah, we wonder what they mean with that 2.

OPPO could have Qualcomm, MediaTek and HiSilicon engineers working on its new chip

OPPO has been working on bringing their own SoC to the market for a while now. According to a new Nikkei Asian report, OPPO is aggressively recruiting engineers from well-known companies to work on their new SoC. The report claims that they are in contact with MediaTek, UniSoc and other inside sources say that they are also in talks with Qualcomm and Huawei’s HiSilicon. An OPPO representative said that they are investing heavily in R&D to strengthen and simplify supply chain. Obviously we won’t be getting this anytime soon and it might take a couple of years, got It’s interesting to see how OPPO keeps evolving, and we know how that impacts other popular brands like OnePlus.

Instagram will soon monetize IGTV videos for online video creators to earn money

It’s no secret that people have been earning money through Instagram for the longest time but not necessarily through Instagram. You mostly had to do sponsored content from third parties and well the company is finally ready to monetize content for their creators. The company is rolling out new tools to introduce ads and allow creators to sell badges through IGTV. When it comes to the ads, they’ll be built for mobile and last 15 seconds each, 55% of the ad revenue will go to the creators. Badges will begin testing next month in certain countries and ads should start rolling out as of right now with some specific creators. We have a full list in the links in the description.

Color options for the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series may have been leaked

We’ve been getting a lot of leaks for the Galaxy Note 20 line-up as we get closer to August. Recently we got different CAD renders showing off the design and now we get some leaked color variants. According to an inside source, the regular Note 20 will come in gray, green, and copper color variants while the Note 20+ will come in black and copper flavors. It looks like Samsung is looking for more simplified colors when compared to the flashy color variants from the Note 10, the source also claims that it won’t be the same copper variant we got with the Note 9 and instead it will be more of a gold-ish hue. It’s also possible that these aren’t all the colors as Samsung always launches more after the fact.

            Story of the day:

The iPhone 13 may come with a killer camera according to the latest leak

And finally the hottest news today have to do with the iPhone 12, or should I say iPhone 13. Not sure if you noticed but every time Apple makes a change in design, that becomes the major feature, and not really any bump in specs or functionality. Well, it seems that’ll be the case this year. Like sure, we’ve been hearing about different changes for the iPhone 12 like the removal of the Lightning Earbuds, the LiDAR sensor and more, but it seems like major changes will happen until the iPhone 13. We covered the going port-less theory a few days ago, and now, we have some new leaks, The same source claims that these leaks should be taken with a huge amount of salt but it looks like Apple is going for major camera improvements until next year. He claims that we’ll be getting a quad camera array that includes a 64MP main sensor. Yeah 1x optical zoom is no x, but it does seem to bring 6x digital from it. Then there’s a 40MP telephoto with up to 5x optical zoom in addition, and then a 64MP anamorphic lens for video capture, plus a 40MP ultra wide and the LiDAR sensor we’re expecting for the iPhone 12.
