HUAWEI Mate X2 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2: Which one’s the alpha foldable?

The battle for the best foldable phone crown just got a lot hotter. HUAWEI has launched its latest foldable – the HUAWEI Mate X2. And even though the company likely wouldn’t ever admit it, but it appears that the folks over at HUAWEI realized that an inward-folding design with a dual-display approach is the best way to go. Design inspiration apart, the HUAWEI Mate X2 comes with some notable upgrades and really takes the foldable feud to Samsung’s doorsteps. Here’s how the two phones compare against each other:

Design and build quality

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 Pocketnow

Yes, the approach is similar, but there are more than a few differences. The HUAWEI Mate X2 is not symmetrical in its cross-section, but claims to offer a near zero-gap experience when folded. As for the Samsung offering, the gap between the two halves of the device when folded is easily noticeable, but it is uniformly thick. The metal and glass build is a shared trait between the two phones.

HUAWEI Mate X2 comes in a choice of four colors – Crystal Blue, Crystal Pink, White, and Black. The Galaxy Z Fold2 is up for grabs in two colors – Mystic Bronze and Mystic Black – but you can customize the color of the hinge for a two-tone approach. A major difference between the two phones is that the inner foldable display of the HUAWEI Mate X2 has no selfie camera, while its Samsung rival comes equipped with a 10MP selfie shooter.

Display: HUAWEI Mate X2 is the better equipped one!

HUAWEI Mate X2

The HUAWEI Mate X2 comes armed with an 8-inch flexible OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, while the outer cover display measures 6.45-inches diagonally. This one also offers 90Hz refresh rate and has a resolution of 2700 x 1160 pixels.

On the Samsung device, only the inner foldable display qualifies as a high refresh rate panel, while the cover display is a regular 60Hz panel. The cover display measures 6.2-inches with a much lower resolution of 2260 x 816 pixels compared to its HUAWEI sibling. The inner 7.6-inch foldable display is also slightly smaller than its HUAWEI rival, but offers a higher 120Hz refresh rate.

Internals

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 Pocketnow

The HUAWEI Mate X2 draws power from the 5nm-based Kirin 9000 chip that comes with an integrated 5G modem. There is 8 gigs of RAM and 128GB / 512GB of non-expandable onboard storage. The lights are kept on by a 5,000mAh battery that can be topped at a peak 55W power. Interestingly, there is no support for wireless charging.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 comes equipped with the 7 nm-based Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ SoC ticking alongside 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of onboard storage. You’ll find a 4,500mAh juicer inside that charges at a comparatively slower 25W, but it supports wireless as reverse wireless charging.

Software: A tricky situation for HUAWEI Mate X2

Huawei Mate X2 back

A key difference, that might well dictate the final decision whether you buy the Galaxy Z Fold 2 or the HUAWEI Mate X2 is the software. The HUAWEI Mate X2 still runs EMUI 11 based on Android 10, which is kinda disappointing. The Samsung device, on the other hand, has received the Android 11 upgrade already. However, the biggest difference is their approach to Android.

The HUAWEI Mate X2 relies on the HMS (HUAWEI Mobile Services) core instead of the GMS (Google Mobile Services) core, which means it misses out on some defining Google offerings such as Play Store, Gmail and Google Maps to name a few. And this might be a red flag to many potential buyers, especially those in markets outside China. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, on the other hand, offers the full-fledged Android experience with all essential Google services and some cool tweaks courtesy of Samsung’s One UI 3.1 skin.

Cameras: HUAWEI Mate X2 takes the glory here

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 Pocketnow

The camera department is where the HUAWEI Mate X2 brings the biggest hardware upgrade. Over at the back, you’ll find an optically stabilized 50MP primary camera, sitting alongside a 16MP ultra-wide angle lens.

There are a couple of zoom cameras at the back – a primary 12MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom range and an 8MP Super Zoom periscope-style camera with an impressive 10x optical zoom output. Selfie and video calling duties are taken care of by a 16MP snapper on the cover display.

HUAWEI Mate X2

Coming to the Galaxy Z Fold 2, it has a trio of 12MP sensors at the back serving as the main shooter, an ultra-wide-angle lens, and a telephoto camera. Both the cover display and inner foldable panel are armed with a 10MP selfie shooter.

Pricing: Innovation comes at a high price

The HUAWEI Mate X2 will set you back by CNY 17,999 (~ $2,780) for the base 256GB storage variant, while the 512GB version will evaporate CNY 18,999 (~ $2,940) from your bank account. Pre-orders have gone live in China, but there is no word regarding its overseas availability at the moment.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 Pocketnow

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is currently up for grabs at $1,999 from Samsung’s official online store, but you can bring the price down to $1,000 with an eligible trade-in in the US. Unlike the HUAWEI offering, the Samsung device is widely available in markets across the globe.

Apple’s latest M1 MacBooks, iPad Pros and more devices are on sale

Apple’s latest M1 Mac mini, iPad Pros and more devices are on sale today

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Watch 3 are on sale today

And you know the way it goes, the official news today begin with deals. Starting with the new M1 MacBook Pro. Amazon currently has the entry level model for 100 dollars off, meaning it’ll cost you 1200 bucks but, you have to go for the Silver variant as, Space Gray is just 75 dollars off.. Actually watch my video on why Silver is my favorite. However if you go for 512GB of storage, both variants have the 100 dollar discount. If you’re looking for a desktop, the M1 Mac Mini is a cool 69 dollars off, meaning it starts at 600 but the discount is applied until checkout. Amazon also has the OnePlus 8T which is a pretty solid offer for 60 dollars off, leaving the entry level variant for 689 dollars shipped. If you’re looking for a new monitor, LG’s Ultra Fine Ergo Display which I love is 53 dollars off, leaving it at 645 dollars shipped and yes, its 4K. Finally, the 11 inch iPad Pro is also 50 off, leaving the Wi-Fi and Cellular and 256GB of storage model for 999 shipped. We have more deals on Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Series on trade-ins, other LG monitors, Alienware laptops and more in the links below.

Another Huawei Mate X2 teaser hints at an inward-folding design

Let’s move the spotlight on to Huawei as, we know that the P Series isn’t the only thing we’re waiting on. For the past couple of weeks the company has been heavily teasing the Mate X2 which is set to launch on February 22nd, in China of course. Now we have a new teaser image from the company that kind of shows a clock, with the phone being the hands, and you can definitely tell that this is an inwards folding display, meaning it’ll look like the Galaxy Z Fold 2 unlike what we got with the Mate X and the Mate XS. According to the leaks, the Mate X2 will feature a 6.45 inch outer display along with an 8.01 inch main display. When it comes to the cameras, we should expect a quad setup at the back with a 50MP primary, 16MP, 12MP and 8MP shooters to go along. Apparently there’s no selfie camera on the main display but there’s a dual one on the cover display. This phone will be powered by the Kirin 9000 and a 4400 mAh battery. We’ll see what the company announces as, I mean it looks interesting.. I just hope we could get it on this side of the pond.

LG could be helping Apple on its upcoming foldable iPhone

Let’s move on to Cupertino for a couple of segments, beginning with their foldable which has been getting a lot of traction lately. We’re expecting this phone to launch sometime during 2023 or later but, it looks like Apple is heavily invested in it already. According to a new report from DigiTimes, Apple is getting some help from LG to develop the foldable display. Now, this doesn’t mean that LG will be supplying the panels as, we know that Apple’s main OLED supplier is Samsung and according to previous rumors, they will be the ones supplying these flexible panels and they have already sent them multiple samples. The report claims that LG would be assisting Apple in these developments, without specifying on what their role would be exactly. If you haven’t been watching lately, we’re expecting this “iPhone Flip” to compete with the RAZR and Z Flip, by bringing a clamshell design. Some sources claim that we should expect a 7 inch panel with Apple Pencil support but, according to other sources like Prosser, we’ll be getting several bright color variants, to be marketed more towards a youthful audience. So yeah, we’re still very far but, rumors just keep coming.

Apple patent proposes the idea of an in-screen Face ID or Touch ID

Moving on, let’s talk Apple once again but this time we’re focusing on iPhones and FaceID which is currently useless until we get iOS 14.5. Now, we know that Apple has been working on finding ways to put FaceID under the display because we know that’s were the industry is going. Now, we have a new patent where Apple is looking at including Photodetectors Integrated into Thin-Film Transistor Backplanes”. I know that was a handful but, basically what they’re saying is that even as the display presents images, they can simultaneously include sensors that detect a different range of environments. These sensors would be variously configured as a biometric sensor, camera, or depth sensor probably being used to generate images, depth maps or even video clips according to the patent. And I think we all know where that’s going. However, most off the patent is concerned on how this photodetector can be included within the display, so it would have to be attached to an organic photosensitive material. Bottom line, the patent mentions that you would be looking at the display with the camera under the display looking right back at you without making the phone thicker and giving you full FaceID functionality. And, like we said yesterday this is just a patent so it could happen soon, it could happen in years or it might not happen at all. Hey, at least a smaller notch is a step in the right direction.

Story of the day:

Android 12 now out. Check out the full rollout schedule and compatibility details

And finally for the hottest news today, let’s talk Google and Android 12 as yes, it’s finally that time of the year again. Like in the case of last year, Google just launched the Developer Preview for Android 12 and of course, it’s currently limited to Pixels. Apparently for this preview, Google is focusing on “new tools for giving great experiences to users”. Some of the features include smoother transitions in the OS, a new design and layout for notifications. Alerts are getting tweaked to open faster, switching away from older notification methods. It’ll now be easer to paste images, videos, and other content from the clipboard or keyboard, finally. They’re also adding native AVIF and HEVC support, and we even hear of an immersive mode for video playback. Google is also tweaking audio, meaning new apps can have haptics correspond to audio playback, giving you better experiences for games, custom vibrations for contacts and more. Probably the biggest changes we’re expecting here go along the lines of privacy, now letting you know if your camera or microphone were being us, toggles to turn these off and more, kind of like to match Apple’s strategy, and improve it in certain ways. Of course, this is just generalized features and we should know more once the preview settles in.

Samsung Galaxy S20+, Alienware monitors and more on sale today

M1 13-inch MacBook Pro, the latest iPad Air and more deals are live

As expected, let’s begin today with deals, beginning with some devices that are about to get a refresh. Yes, they’re still the Samsung trade-in deals but don’t act like they’re still not crazy. Starting with the Galaxy S20 Series as, you can currently get the S20+ at $500 and the S20 Ultra for $600. The Z Fold 2 is still available for $1000 bucks, and the Note 20 Series still start at $450. Then again, you still need an eligible device to trade-in so keep that in mind. Staying with Samsung but moving ion to Amazon, the Galaxy Watch 3 is currently $130 off, leaving it at $350 and the Galaxy Buds are $51 off, leaving those at $79. The M1 MacBook Pro is $60 off, leaving the 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage model for $1240. Finally, the Platinum Surface Pro 7 and a Black Type Cover is $230 off, meaning you can get it for $800 at the Microsoft Store. Amazon buys podcast maker Wondery as battle against Spotify and Apple heats up

Let’s stay on Amazon for another segment and we know you want more deals but that’s not the case. It seems podcasts are the new major bet from giants like Spotify and Amazon wasn’t gonna trail behind. Back in September, Amazon Music introduced a new Podcasts feature for the US, the UK, Germany and Japan. Well, less than three months later, the company just announced that they are acquiring Wondery, which is a podcast network that launched back in 2016 backed by 20th Century Fox. The statement says that “when this deal closes, nothing will change for the listeners and they’ll continue to access Wondery podcasts through a variety of provers. With Amazon Music, Wondery will be able to provide more high-quality, innovative content and continue their mission of bringing knowledge and entertainment to their listeners”. The deal is reportedly valued at $300M and is Amazon’s way of letting Apple and Spotify know that they’re taking podcasts seriously.

                                      3, 2, 1, and sold! A prototype OnePlus 9 5G has exchanged hands for $3,000 on eBay

Let’s talk about OnePlus for a second as, something very interesting just went down when it comes to all the leaks plaguing it. We’re currently gearing up for the OnePlus 9 Series and if you remember, about a month ago we got some hands on images revealing the design. Well, apparently that was a prototype and that same prototype was just sold on eBay for $3000. It was originally listed last week for $6000 as a OnePlus 9 5G prototype, unlocked for all GSM carriers. This device is running a test build of Oxygen OS, meaning it probably has a crazy amount of bugs and it’ll most likely not get a software update. So yeah, so far we’ve gotten multiple leaks, including some specifications that show the Snapdragon 888 5G, a 120Hz display, 65W wired charging and 30W wireless charging. We’ll most likely get around 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and a triple camera array at the back, we just hope that even the regular model brings that rumored Leica sensor. If OnePlus finally takes the leap to a trusted brand like Leica, this could change everything, though that includes the price.

Apple’s second-generation AirPods Pro might arrive in two sizes

We’ve been covering a good amount of rumors of the upcoming AirPods and AirPods Pro and it looks like we’re getting more than what we expected. According to some new leaks from Mr. White, we might be getting the second-gen AirPods Pro in 2 different sizes. He tweeted some pictures of the flat connection relays for them, showing that there are two sizes for them. However, there is a possibility that one of them might be for the “AirPods Pro Lite” which will simply be dubbed as the 3rd generation AirPods and it makes sense as all of the rumors hint to these adopting the current AirPods Pro design language. The tweet also mentions that they will be using W2 chips which will be a successor to the W1 chip we get in AirPods and some Beats headphones, that’s what enables the seamless pairing and it apparently also plays a role in conserving battery life. We’ll see if at the end we end up getting two different sizes for the AirPods Pro which would be pretty cool or, if these are just the 3rd Gen AirPods and the 2nd Gen AirPods Pro. Whatever the case may be, let’s just hope they don’t bring AirPods Max prices.

iPhones dominate US smartphone activations on Christmas Day 2020

Now how about if we discuss statistics. Take a whild guess over which was the phone that was most activated this holiday season?. Well, we have some new numbers from Flurry Analytics on the Top 10 US Smartphone Activations that happened on Christmas Day. Believe it or not, the graph shows that 9 out of the 10 phones were iPhones, with the LG K30 at number 10, doing some Michael Jordan-like Numbers for LG and the whole Android market for that matter. What’s crazy is that the iPhone 11 and the XR keep being Apple’s top drivers at number 1 and number 2, followed by the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the 12. The iPhone SE also made the cut at number 6, with the other phones being the 12 Pro, 11 Pro Max, the 8 and the 8 Plus. Now, according to them, this is a normal trend as, the newer higher end devices generally surge around to the early adopters, with the rest of the consumers adopting it later. They also mentioned that it doesn’t mean they sold more, it was just a more popular phone at this time. Now an interesting tidbit is that smartphone activations also went down 23% when compared to last year for obvious reasons, this has been a really tough year. We just wonder what demographics bought less this year, and hope 2021 sees a more even distribution.

                                      Story of the day:

Samsung Galaxy S21+ looks hot in new leaked images

Here’s your first look at the official protective cases for Samsung Galaxy S21 series

And finally, when it comes to the hottest news today, don’t act like you weren’t expecting the Galaxy S21 Leaks, because they’re here. Like we mentioned on the previous Daily, most of the leaks have been focused around the Ultra but, now the other devices are getting some love from tipsters. Back on Monday, we got a full list of specs for the S21 and the S21+ and now, we have some IRL hands on images for the S21+. These images come from a tipster on Twitter showing almost everything you need to see. This is the lilac variant for the phone which brings a rose goldish triple camera array, and we also get to see the flat display with the punch hole that still comes in the center. We also have the usual dose of case leaks from MySmartPrice that confirm all of the design elements we’ve seen for the past couple of months, from the colors to the camera arrays. As a recap of the specs, the S21+ is expected to bring a 6.7in AMOLED display running at 120Hz, it’ll be powered by the Snapdragon 888 or the Exynos 2100, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and a 4800 mAh battery. At the back you should expect three cameras which consist of a 12MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra wide and a 64MP telephoto. We just wonder what Samsung’s new design language is gonna be called this year

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, Apple’s 27-inch iMac and more on sale today

Let’s begin today’s official news with deals. The year is about to end, but those Samsung trade-in seem like if they’re here to stay. If you’ve been watching us you probably are familiar with them but, that Galaxy Z Fold 2 for $999 continues to be a huge steal for our phone of the year. OPPO Find X3 could feature a custom-made Sony IMX789 lens

Let’s move on to OPPO as, we’re getting somewhat close to the release of the OPPO Find X3 and we know that one of the main things the company plans to focus on is the camera. According to a new leaks from Weibo, OPPO is working with Sony on a custom chip, the Sony IMX789, which we could see on the Find X3 Series. Apparently, all flagship OPPO models will come with a customized sensor, with the one we mentioned previously remaining an exclusive for them. As a reference, the previous Sony IMX766 promises top-notch photography in low light conditions with a 1/1.56in sensor offering 1.0μm, taking in 63.8% more light than the 48MP IMX586. So yeah, we should expect a custom sensor that absorbs a crazy amount of light. Some of the other leaked specs include the Snapdragon 888 5G, a 6.7in display with 525ppi, a 4500 mAh battery with 65W SuperVOOC charging. And, for the camera’s we’re expecting two 50MP sensors, probably including the one we mentioned before.

OnePlus 9 leak reveals major battery and charging technology upgrades

OnePlus is also getting ready to launch their 9 Series as, multiple reports hint that we’ll be getting it earlier in the year, some time in March. We’re expecting 3 devices so far, the OnePlus 9, 9 Pro and even a Lite variant. Well, according to a new report from 91Mobiles, the regular OnePlus 9 will finally get wireless charging support as well as reverse wireless charging. Did I already say finally? IF you remember, earlier this year, the 8 Pro brought this feature but, both the 8T and the 8 missed out but, it looks like the company wants to even things out, only leaving out the Lite variant. Older leaks hint that the OnePlus 9 will bring a flat 6.55in FHD+, OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, it’ll be powered by the Snapdragon 888 5G, 8GB of RAM and it’ll probably start at 128GB of storage. When it comes to the cameras, it’ll apparently bring 2 48MP shooters, with some rumors hinting that we may even get a 50MP sensor from Leica. Wait what, Leica? Could it be that OnePlus is finally gonna fix the one thing they still can’t get right?

12.9-inch iPad Pro with mini-LED display might launch in Q1 2021

Let’s move on to Apple for a couple of segments, as aggressiveness seems to be part of their 2021 too. Let’s start with iPads as we’ve been covering a ton, and I mean a ton of mini-LED iPad rumors and leaks and it looks like we’re finally closing in on getting the actual products. According to a new report from DigiTimes, Apple has diversified their supply chain for displays and touch panels as, BOE has finally received approval to supply OLED for iPhones and integrated touch modules for mini-LED backlit panels for the 12.9in iPad Pro which according to them, will launch in the first quarter of 2021. So if you think about it, Ming Chi Kuo mentioned in one of his research notes that these new mini-LED iPads would begin production in Q4 of 2020 which goes along with this new report from DigiTimes. So yeah, we’re expecting these new iPads in the first half of 2021, most likely in Q1, and they are rumored to bring 5G support as well. Apple is reportedly preparing 6 devices with mini-LED displays but this iPad might be the first one.

Apple might take until 2027 to launch its ambitious car: Kuo

Let’s keep talking about Apple but this time, the Apple Car, which many could argue was anything but true until all the news that happened last week. It definitely looked like Apple was hard at work to get this car out but, this new report makes a lot more sense and it gives us a better time line. According to a new research note from Ming Chi Kuo, this car will be launched sometime between 2025 and 2027 the earliest. To quote Kuo, “we predicted that the car would launch between 2023-2025 but, their latest survey indicates that the current development schedule for the Apple Car is not clear, and if the development actually starts this year and everything goes well, 2025-2027 would be the earliest”. This is apparently due to some changes in the EV and Self-Driving market and Apple’s quality standards, with Kuo saying that he wouldn’t be surprised if it drops until 2028 or later. Last week we heard from Reuters that Apple is already contacting suppliers and that might be true but apparently they’re just beginning this process. And it’s still not clear if we’ll get a self-driving car, or a regular passenger vehicle like the report mentioned last week. We’ll see how the rumors develop over these upcoming years.

                                      Story of the day:

Samsung Galaxy S21 and S21+ leak bares all the key specifications and features

Samsung Galaxy S21 series goes up on pre-order in the US

And finally, the Galaxy S21 Series continues to be the hottest topic around as we’re getting really close to the launch. So far, most leaks have focused on the Ultra but now we get some more information on the more affordable siblings. We have a new detailed breakdown from WinFuture of the Galaxy S21 and S21+’s specs. Starting with the S21, it’ll rock a 6.2in FHD+ flat display, which will be 120Hz capable, with Gorilla Glass 7 on top, a downgrade when compared to the QHD+ panels on the S20 Series. It’ll either be powered by the Exynos 2100 or the Snapdragon 888 5G along with 8GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage and a 4000 mAh battery. When it comes to the S21+, it’ll bring a 6.7in AMOLED display, with the same specs as the S21 and actually less PPI. It’ll also be powered by the Snapdragon 888 or the Exynos 2100, same amount of RAM and same storage but, here we get a 4800 mAh battery. Now, when it comes to the cameras we’re expecting a triple camera module, with a 12MP primary, a 12MP ultra wide and a 64MP telephoto with 3x hybrid zoom. Both of these phones will be 5G capable, IP68 certified and will bring a 10MP selfie shooter. And, speaking of the fact that we’re getting close to the launch date, a new report from XDA reveals that the S21 Series is available for pre-order registrations through the Samsung website. Giving you a good amount of money in trade-in credit. For the Ultra’s specs we’ll link one of the previous Daily’s up here, make sure to check that out.
