Amazon – despite a market cap of over $1.6 trillion – wants you to fund its cuckoo clock

Crowdfunding has given us some great success stories over the years such as Pebble, Oculus (now owned by Facebook), and Misfit. But it is better suited for side projects or bootstrapped startups struggling to raise funds for building a product, and certainly not for an e-commerce behemoth with billions of dollars in its coffers. Yet, Amazon – with a market cap of over $1.65 trillion dollars at the time of writing this – is doing just that by launching a new initiative called Build It that is essentially crowdfunding in disguise.

You can show your interest in a product, but you'll only be charged once it ships

The plan is simple. In Amazon’s own words – a product will only be built if it meets pre-order goals in a specific interval (30 days, as per Amazon’s FAQ section). But there’s a small difference here. You have to show your interest in a product without paying a cent, and you’ll only be charged if the product actually gets built. The pledged amount will be deducted from your bank account once the product ships.

                    Smart Cuckoo Clock
                    Amazon’s Smart Cuckoo Clock

Amazon will use the platform to make experimental products that stand the risk of failing if launched as mass-market devices. So, it’s a win-win situation for both Amazon and its customers. The first three products Amazon is making as part of its Build It initiative are a Smart Cuckoo Clock, a Smart Nutrition Scale, and a Smart Sticky Note Printer, all of which have set a deadline of March 19 to meet the pre-order goals.

The Smart Cuckoo Clock, priced at $79.99, looks like a regular clock with a mechanical cuckoo and pendulum. But it can be paired with Alexa to let you set timers and alarms via voice commands, and see the countdown on its LED display. It will sync with a compatible Echo device and is powered by four C batteries.

                    Smart Nutrition Scale
                    Smart Nutrition Scale

With an asking price of $34.99, the Smart Nutrition Scale will tell you details such as calorie count, carbs, and sugar content of food items you weigh on it. All the information from the scale will be displayed on a paired Echo Show.

                    Smart Sticky Note Printer
                    Smart Sticky Note Printer

The third product from Amazon’s Built It initiative is the Smart Sticky Note Printer, which lets you print notes such as shopping lists by just asking Alexa to do so. Notably, it won’t require any ink or toner to print your notes, but you will have to buy the sticky paper rolls separately. This one costs $89.99 and sounds like a useful device to put on your kitchen counter or fridge.

Samsung’s new Vacuum Cleaner empties its own bin and has LiDAR

At its “A Better Normal For All” CES event, Samsung announced new TVs, home appliances, and new vacuum robot cleaners. One of them is the JetBot 90 AI+. Samsung uses a combination of sensors and AI-enhanced object recognition technology to navigate its vacuum cleaner around your home with “the same efficiency and care you do.”

Borrowing LiDAR from self-driving cars to deliver precise movements

The JetBot 90 AI+ features a LiDAR sensor that is similar to that used in self-driving cars. It detects distance and tracks location for precise movements. There is also a 3D sensor that recognizes the difference between objects such as a toy and the leg of a chair, detects even small objects on the floor, and recognizes a room’s shape to maneuver around it.

Samsung uses an object recognition algorithm to allow its product to identify objects of all kinds and map the safest, most efficient route. The JetBot 90 AI+ then uses this information to clean closely around items on the floor. It does so while being sure to maintain a safe distance from fragile or delicate objects and to lower itself under furniture when needed. If anything is classified as dangerous or likely to cause secondary contamination, it will simply avoid the object.

There is an advanced digital inverter motor that maximizes the 30W suction power of its Jet Cyclone system to trap dust from the air and dirt from the floor. The unit’s self-cleaning brush has fine fibers made of soft woven textiles. It picks up dust from hard floor and reaches into crevices.

                    It empties itself automatically

The Samsung JetBot 90 AI+ automatically heads back to the Clean Station (Samsung’s signature disposal system) after it is done with the cleaning. There,  it empties the dirt, dust, and hair it has collected into a bag. This bag is required to be replaced once every two to three months.

“At Samsung, we’re committed to delivering new appliance innovations that inspire families, while helping make life at home easier in ways not thought of before,” said John Herrington, Senior Vice President, General Manager of Home Appliances. “By automating your floor care and learning your laundry preferences, these new home appliances remove items from your to-do list, freeing you up to do more of what you love.”

These are some of the best Apple deals for Black Friday

Alright, we’ve decided that this deals segment needs to grow when the demand calls for it, and come on, it’s Black Friday week. Since today we’re talking Apple for the hottest news, let’s begin with Apple deals. Like yesterday, we’re gonna start this off with trade-in deals first, as you can currently get the iPhone 12 Pro for $370 off, if you have an eligible device, leaving the entry level model for $629. The 12 Pro Max is getting the same treatment, leaving that at $729. Moving on to Macs, the Intel 13in MacBook Pro is $150 off, leaving the Intel Core i5, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD variant for $1649. The 16in MacBook Pro is $260 off, that leaves the Core i7, 6GB of RAM and 512GB of storage model for $2150. Finally, the old Intel MacBook Air is $100 off, that leaves the entry level model for $899. Again these are Intel models which is kind of a bummer but they’re still good machines. Now, iPads! The 11in iPad Pro, Wi-Fi only model with 512GB of storage is available for $100 off, leaving it at $999. The latest iPad Air is also $40 off, that leaves the entry level variant for $559. And guys, this segment is already pretty long so we have more deals on other Macs, other iPads, the Apple Watch and even some Beats products in the links in the description.

These are the best Samsung deals for Black Friday

Oh, that was just Apple’s section. For all you Samsung fans, This is a quick reminder of the deals they continue to have, which make it really compelling to get their latest devices. Just keep in mind that these deals depend on you having an eligible device to trade in. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is available for the same $1000 we mentioned yesterday, but now in both color options and the customizable hinge. The Note 20 Ultra is available for $550 and the regular Note 20 for a crazy $250. Moving on to the S Series, you can get the S20 for $390, the S20+ for $540 and the Ultra for $740, might makes them a tough pick given the crazy deal for the Note 20 Ultra. To end with Samsung, you can also get the S20 FE for $140 so, again, all these deals apply if you have an eligible device to trade in. Sticking to Samsung and their trade-ins, the Galaxy Watch 3 is also available for $140 and the Titanium version is available for $300. Pretty much half of for both of them. We also have deals on the Galaxy Buds, the Watch Active 2 and more in the description.

Black Friday gives us Motorola, Google and more Samsung deals

And no worries, we’re not done. That was just the Apple and Samsung section for today’s deals, We’ve got more on other companies as well.. Let’s move on to Google smart speakers, for example the Nest Hub is $40 off, leaving it at $50 shipped. The Home Max is $150 off, leaving it at $149. They also have some bundles like the Nest Audio 2 pack for $30 off, leaving it at $170. Moving on to Moto, the RAZR 5G is $400 off, leaving it at $1000 shipped. The Edge is also $300 off, leaving that at $400 shipped. We also have deals on the G Power, G Stylus and more. HyperX is also having a huge sale on their keyboards headsets and more. Their Alloy Origins Keyboard is $300 off, leaving it at $80. Their HyperX Cloud Stinger Core headset is $10 off, leaving it at $29 shipped on Amazon. Finally, Fitbit also has some pretty good options with the Versa 3 being $30 off, meaning you can get it for $200. The Special Edition for the Versa 2 is $70 off, leaving it at $150. We have even more deals in the links in the description.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip successor might rock a 120Hz display and slimmer bezels

Fine, let’s now move on to news. If you tuned in yesterday, one of the things we talked about is that we would be getting the next Galaxy Z Flip, later than the Galaxy S21 unlike last year where we got them at the same event. Well, according to some new reports from the Elec this phone was actually delayed, mainly to push production for the Galaxy S21 and because of what we covered yesterday which said that Samsung doesn’t want new products to mess with their regular sales as the Galaxy Note might disappear. The report also adds that Samsung might launch anywhere between three to five foldables next year, maybe they’re adding more phones to each line-up with different price points. On another note (pun intended), a new leak from Ice Universe says that this phone will actually be called the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and it will bring an improved 120Hz display, narrower bezels and it will get a cheaper price tag. Now, we don’t actually know how cheaper yet but, if they really want this strategy to succeed, they should at least price this and the Z Fold 3, somewhat closer to the Note’s price point.

We have new images of the Samsung Galaxy S21 or the Galaxy S21+

And yes, let’s keep talking about Samsung but this time for the Galaxy S21 and I guess you can say we’re in the home stretch when it comes to leaks for this phone. We have some new case renders for either the S21 or the S21+ telling by this design. They show the flat display which will either be 6.2in or 6.7in depending on the variant, both rocking 120Hz display rates at FHD+, kind of a downgrade when compared to the S20. At the back you can also see the camera array which is significantly smaller than the Ultra’s rocking three cameras which consist of a 12MP main sensor, a 64MP telephoto and a 12MP ultra wide. A while ago we also had other case renders for the Ultra but we didn’t do a daily that day and, the thing about it is that all we can see is the camera array and not the display. We’re expecting an event to happen sometime around January 14 so let’s see, things should only get more interesting from here.

                    Story of the day:

Redesigned MacBooks with Apple silicon are coming in H2 2021: Kuo

And finally the hottest news today have to do with Apple, the fact that we still can’t believe how good those M1 MacBooks are, and yet why you might wanna wait a little to buy. I mean sure, Cupertino just unveiled these new batch of computers, but the concerns of many are valid, they seriously look like the old ones in every way. It would make sense for anyone to want a re-design, and we also wonder what the next batch of Apple Silicon chips is gonna be able to do. Well, according to a new research note from Ming Chi Kuo, the next step in Apple’s two year transition away from Intel is redesigned MacBooks. Now, he didn’t really specify which models we’re getting, but he has previously said that we should expect a redesigned 16in and a 14in MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon that should launch in the second or third quarter of 2021. Based on other Kuo reports, we should also expect some new miniLED Macs and a lower priced iPad in the first quarters of the year. Now, when it comes to sales, he predicts that the demand for these M1 Macs is actually higher than expected, and the 12 Pro and Pro Max are actually stealing the show when it comes to iPhones as the demand for the regular 12 and the Mini is not as high. Finally, both Apple Watches are selling well thanks to the new health management functions and the improved design.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, S20 5G and more devices on sale today

Let’s start today off with deals, cause by this time I should find another way to introduce this segment. Anyways, let’s end the week with some Galaxy Note 20 deals because, why not? The Note 20 Ultra is currently $200 off on Amazon, leaving the 128GB model for $1100, and yes this is the US variant. The Galaxy S20 is also getting $200 deals, that leaves the regular S20 for $800 but, you’ll have to go for the Cloud Pink colorway. Moving on to B&H, the Galaxy Note 10 which is still a pretty good buy is down $250 from its original price tag, leaving it at $700 shipped. Finally, the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go is $150 off, leaving that at $759 for the entry level model. We have more deals on other Galaxy Notes, Razer peripherals and more, in the links in the description.

New macOS Big Sur is finally ready for your Mac

I want to continue the official news on a positive note today so, let’s talk about YouTube and your favorite video every year. The company took to Twitter yesterday to announce that we won’t be getting a rewind next year. They posted a picture explaining how 2020 has been a different year, and they don’t feel like they should treat it like it wasn’t so, they’re taking a break this year. They also said that a lot of good was made this year as creators found ways to switch things up and cheer people so they thank them for making a difference. Now, we know that the Rewind isn’t necessarily people’s favorite video but, I kind of agree with YouTube for taking this position. But like seriously, can you name any particular YouTube rewind that you liked, cause I can’t remember any.

Samsung announces Exynos 1080 5nm chipset for upper mid-range phones

Now how about if we talk about Samsung as the company is sadly not abandoning their Exynos platform, and I doubt that will ever happen now that we got to see what Apple Silicon can do, that said, the company I smaking an interesting move. Samsung has just announced their new Exynos 1080 processor, but before you roll your eyes at me, hold it. This actually seems to be the first Exynos worth talking about, even if it’s designed for mid-rangers, but it actually follows on the 5nm process that’s making Apple Silicon look so good right now.. Exynos 1080-powered smartphones can have support for WQHD+ resolution display with up to 90Hz refresh rate or Full HD+ resolution screen with up to 144Hz refresh rate. As for the cameras, it supports up to 200MP single camera or 32MP + 32MP dual-camera setup or a maximum of six cameras. It also supports HDR10+ and 4K 60ffps encoding and decoding with HEVC. So yeah, technically this chip is to a certain degree more powerful and efficient than even the best Galaxy flagship, but we’ll see how soon we see that extend.

Instagram REALLY wants you to watch Reels and Shop on its app

Now let’s move the spotlight over to what used to be my favorite social network, at least up until Facebook bought it. For those of you, like me, who love Instagram it looks like things are changing.. Again. Can Facebook just leave it alone? The company just announced a new update yesterday which is currently rolling out to users. Basically they are now prioritizing Reels and the Shop, by moving the Likes and Post sections to the top right, next to the DMS and now you get Reels at the center and the Shop where the likes used to be. Both of these features have been a part of Instagram for quite some time but, it looks like they’re really trying to push it now. Instagram has released other major updates this year, like switching to Facebook Messenger for DMs, or adding “Suggested Posts” to the feed. So far, reception hasn’t been so great and I doubt many people are interested in the Instagram Shop for it to switch places with the notification hub. We’ll see how it works out for them, cause yeah, the social network I once used for photos wants to be a mall now?

New iPhone 13 lineup may arrive with a smaller battery

Now let’s talk Apple as yes, happy iPhone day part 2. All of the iPhones are here now, as a matter of fact, we have content coming very soon on the 12 Pro Max and the Mini but, one of the topics people are interested in this year is battery life. The 11 had great battery life because they finally caved and gave us bigger batteries. Thing is that plan shrunk with the iPhone 12 and it sort of makes sense with the 5nm architecture in the new chips. Well, according to a new Ming Chi Kuo report, they’ll be shrinking them again next year. He claims that Cupertino will be using a new battery “soft board” technology for the iPhone 13 and the 13 Mini. This technology helps them save internal space and reduce costs because they have fewer layers than what we currently get, maybe to make the iPhones slimmer or in case they want to bring the headphone jack back. Sadly, this means that Apple is going back to the days were they prioritized slimmer phones over good battery life. Another factor could be that LTPO display we’ll reportedly be getting as it draws less power than current displays. So far, my experience with the 12’s battery has been okay, but it’s definitely not better than the 11 so, let’s hope the 13 isn’t worse than the 12.

                    Story of the day:

We could get new mini-LED iPad and AirPods 3 in the first half of 2021

iOS 14.3 reveals an icon that hints at the design of Apple’s AirPods Studio headphones

Finally, for the hottest news today, let’s keep talking about Apple and Ming Chi Kuo, mainly because you know that not all the rumors we’ve discussed were launched and we wonder where are those products. Well, let’s begin with the latest developer beta for iOS 14.3 which reveals some interesting things. A developer shared on twitter a “New Pairing” screen video from the Find My App in this beta where there’s a magnifying glass that swivels across some over the ear headphones. Now, there’s no secret that before Apple launches a product, an icon of it pops around somewhere so, it looks like we could finally be getting those AirPods Studios but, according to Prosser those are significantly delayed. But now, moving back to Ming Chi Kuo, his latest research note gives us more information on what Apple plans to do in the first half of 2021. The note mentions that the components destined for a miniLED iPad will be mass produced in the first half of 2021. Now, we’re expecting three different iPads with miniLED displays but, this one should be an iPad Mini or the regular 10.2in iPad, as the 12.9in iPad Pro is slated for Q4 of next year. Moving back to AirPods, he also claims that Cupertino is working on the third generation AirPods which will also go into mass production in the first half of 2021. These will reportedly get a new design to look more like the Pros but, they will still lack Pro features like ANC. If Apple is planning to launch these in the first half of next year, it kinda makes sense for them to launch with the AirPods Studios.
