Google Play “Best of 2016” includes a lot of face, Deadpool

Who knew that you could pull together Justin Bieber and Ryan Reynolds together in one list?

The Google Play Store sells millions of copies of apps, music, movies and more over the course of a year and, for the first time ever, it decided to celebrate all that content in an awards ceremony. But now we’re talking about sheer volume as Google is disclosing the top five downloaded pieces of content in several categories for the year.

The Google Play “Best of 2016” list covers six categories: apps, games, music, movies, TV shows and books.

Believe it or not, Deadpool actually took the top spot in two of the categories, besting another literary entry from J.K. Rowling and a freaking Star Wars film:

Streamed Songs

  1. Stressed Out, Twenty One Pilots
  2. Sorry, Justin Bieber
  3. One Dance (feat. WizKid & Kyla), Drake
  4. Don’t Let Me Down (feat. Daya), The Chainsmokers
  5. Me, Myself & I, G-Eazy

Books

  1. Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe by Cullen Bunn
  2. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Parts One and Two by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany, Jack Thorne
  3. The Girl on the Train: A Novel by Paula Hawkins
  4. The Art of War by Tzu Sun
  5. Me Before You: A Novel by Jojo Moyes

All of these releases proved to be global hits for 2016 and a lot of these seem to be products for their time — the dominance of selfie editing apps is apparent here. Let’s hope that 2017 brings a little more freshness to the table.

Best tablets in 2015 so far (Video)

Tablets are a strange thing. Most people don’t upgrade them near as often as they do their smartphones, and the entire purpose of tablets is still debated among many confused consumers. Because they’re not as popular as their smartphone counterparts, OEMs don’t make tablets at as quickly a pace as they do phones, and so we’re a little short on new devices to wave in your face. Thankfully, tablets keep like leftovers from a pasta dinner, and not that month-old milk you haven’t bothered taking out of the fridge, and some of the best tablets in early 2015 are the ...

Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference is one of the company’s biggest events of the year. Top 5 reasons you should look forward to iOS 8

Each year around the same time, we look to Apple to bring some new features to its mobile platform. Each year, our anticipation for more useful, innovative features on iOS grows immensely.Maybe we’re just demanding and ungrateful. Or maybe it’s because, even for some strong Apple proponents, the software is beginning to feel a little stale. Last year’s face-lift brought very few helpful changes to the platform; among the most notable were Control Center, folders with no app limitation on the Home screen, and AirDrop. But the brunt of the changes were dramatic visual ...

Top 5 Windows Phone wishes for 2014 (video)

After spending years waiting for a revamp for Windows Mobile 6.5, we’ll admit that nothing had prepared us for the dramatic change that Windows Phone 7 had to offer. Back in 2010 the need for a third successful player in the mobile space was urgent, and since Pocketnow was born as a “Pocket PC” website more than a decade ago, it was clear that we had high hopes for Microsoft’s next mobile platform. With its great minimalism and social integration, Windows Phone has gathered a rather interesting cult following that has ensured it a future as the world’s third ...
