Galaxy Beta Program shows off TouchWiz’s new name: Samsung Experience

TouchWiz. Long the bane of Android user interface geeks. If you interpret it a certain way, it can sound rude. And hey, some people don’t deign to recognize wizards beyond the pale of pinball.

No more will Samsung’s software skin over Google’s OS be called TouchWiz. It seems that the third-round update for the Galaxy Beta Program‘s Android N OS test is renaming it the “Samsung Experience.” Crazier yet, we’re already on version 8 of it.

Just as the wacky gestures for obscure features have faded away, so has Samsung stopped talking about TouchWiz. But will we really want to hear more and more about this “Samsung Experience”? Could the chaebol also apply this name to its efforts on Tizen smartphones — branding is everything after all, and with the company taking the lead on its special OS, making sure that we know who made it could be a good idea.

The Galaxy Beta Program has been working to tweak Android 7.0 for the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge for over a month now.

This flat Galaxy Note 7 boots up

But why are we talking about it?It’s not going to be there come Unpacked time anyways, right? At least, that’s the assumption we’re making out of all the words about Samsung’s curved-only strategy for the Galaxy Note 7.Well, if you’ve been hoping for a flat screen (weird to be saying that for a smartphone), you can continue hoping. One Weibo ...

Samsung’s getting it on for the On7 as we find that the Galaxy On5 is headed to the US, so of course the one that isn’t coming to the US gets the update first, right?SamMobile actually has the update OTA from Turkey in its stock right now for you to download if you have a Galaxy On7. Typical Marshmallow improvements are stocked on as well as some new twangs to TouchWiz. If you prefer to ...

Galaxy Beta Program’s “New Note UX” makes app drawer optional

We got an early hint at what the Galaxy Beta Program would bring to the fore, including a bit of what the supposed Note 7 would have for hardware. But as the program has officially launched in Korea and China, there’s more we need to learn about in preparation for the next S Pen-toting phablet. What Samsung has dubbed the “New Note UX” has spread out to select Note 5 users and it is ...

Samsung developing TouchWiz with Vulkan, sees battery savings

Samsung is galvanizing one of its user interfaces by Vulkanizing it. We’re seeing the company put the Vulkan API to good use on the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge already — how fitting that these two devices are the first in Android to support it.If you don’t know what Vulkan is, it’s a tool that will get graphically-intensive processes running on ...

Samsung is in the process of acquainting its customer service representatives with its new look TouchWiz on Android 6.0.Thing is, we weren’t supposed to see the darn presentation. But we have it leaked to us, so we might as well pore through it.Common questions anticipated concern the revised app permission pop-ups, lack of decryption and user ...

Google rumored to assist Samsung with TouchWiz optimization

Ask five different Android users what they think about the manufacturer skinning on their phones and you’re likely to get give different answers: maybe some love all the extra flourishes and navigation elements, while other crave a more sparse, stock-like Android experience. But for as much as those opinions may differ, there tend to be some common themes we see recur time and tie again, and top on that list has to be the performance hit these custom UIs can confer. Whether we’re talking about ...

A consistent UI across manufacturers is more important than custom skins

In war there are a few proven strategies, one of the more famous is “divide and conquer”. The theory goes that by separating the forces of your foes you can more efficiently deal with each group on its own, slowly whittling away at your opposition. Though not nearly as tragic as war in the traditional sense, when it comes to smartphones, tablets, and mobile technology, there is most certainly a war being waged. Instead of fighting for Rights, Liberty, or to acquire land, this spoils of this war are you and I… our personal information, our pocketbooks, and ultimately, our ...

How Samsung might dial-down bloat on TouchWiz for the Galaxy S6

So much of our discussion of the Galaxy S6 has focused on hardware – whether that’s choice of SoC, external design, or support for accessories – that’s its tempting to gloss over the software that will ultimately run on the upcoming Samsung flagship. After all, shouldn’t it be pretty predictable by now: recent Android build, spruced-up version of TouchWiz, and you’re done? Well, maybe not, and a recent report suggested that Samsung could be trying something radical for TouchWiz ...

Back on Samsung after a long hiatus

So, I’ve been walking around on Android for a while now. The reasons for this are many and varied, but I thought maybe it might be time to talk about my introduction to Android. I got my hands on a Samsung GSIII a couple of years back. It was my first introduction to Android on a phone. I had installed CM9 on a TouchPad or two, but this was the first time using it as a phone. So I grew up with Touchwiz. It was the only family I knew.Over the next few months I bounced back and forth between Android and Windows ...

Samsung Galaxy Alpha review: the phone the Galaxy S5 should have been (almost)

“It’s not necessarily unattractive … it just kind of exists.”Thats how we described Samsung’s Galaxy S5 in our full review back in April, lamenting the lack of aesthetic flair in a flagship ostentatiously marketed as a “glam” device. While we appreciated its durability and top-notch spec sheet, what we wanted was a product that actually felt like a $650 smartphone – and the Galaxy S5 ...

Early Android L build for Galaxy S5 leaks on video

When we’ve been talking about the refreshed new look for Google’s mobile platform coming with the release of Android L this fall, we’ve largely been approaching the question from a pure Android perspective: how things on devices like the Nexus 7 or Nexus 5 will differ from previous Android versions. But there’s a whole world of Android out there beyond Google’s gates, with OEMs endeavoring to give their phones their own unique looks – well,

OEMs: If you’re going to mod that far, give us a path back to stock

My mother-in-law isn’t exactly what you’d call “technologically savvy”, but that doesn’t stop her from upgrading to the latest and greatest Android-powered smartphones every chance she gets. Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem, but I’ll give you three guesses who gets to support those devices. It wouldn’t be such an issue except at her age — how can I put this lightly — she’s a bit “set in her ways”.Don’t get me wrong, she can whip out her phone and call anyone in her extremely wide social network faster ...

Samsung planning far-reaching Android software changes under Google pressure?

Samsung users are only all too aware that the software Samsung delivers on its Android devices can be a bit “heavy.” On top of the TouchWiz changes, you’ve got all of Samsung’s custom apps – and together, this adds up to a ton of stuff; just look at how Samsung fared in that phone-free-space breakdown we examined last week. But could this soon be changing? Word arrives today that Google may have convinced Samsung to tone things down, following
