Microsoft acquires Groove Music, Canadian app similar to Songza

Consider this the answer to Google’s acquisition of Songza. This one’s a little more tricky, though, if only in name.Canadian-made iOS music app Groove is now under Microsoft’s belt. It’s not related to the latter’s streaming media service (formerly called Xbox Music and Zune Music) nor the Microsoft Office shared ...

Microsoft Zune services reach end of the road in November

Microsoft’s attempt at hatching up an iPod competitor back in 2006 didn’t go so well. It launched the Zune music player back on November 14, 2006. Through six years of support, the growing lineup of Zune players outgrew the demand for them (and Windows Phone 7 devices). ...

Microsoft announces Groove, the new face of Xbox Music

The coming arrival of Windows 10 is a force of change across Microsoft’s ecosystem, and beyond introducing the latest incarnation of the company’s operating systems, it’s leading to shifts in the other software and services Microsoft provides. Earlier this year, Microsoft shared word of one such change in the pipeline, dropping its Xbox branding from the new Music and Video apps for Windows 10. But for Music, at least, it turns out that Microsoft has even grander ambitions, and today reveals the next phase of this re-branding as it announces Groove.Groove is ...

Xbox Music animated Live Tile to return?

One of the biggest complaints that Windows and Windows Phone users have with both of these platforms, is how hot features get killed for no particular reason. Surely there must be a reason for these features to die, but you’d assume that the evolution of a platform should only make it look and perform better. Such is the case of the death of the animated Live Tile for Xbox Music, which died with the birth of Windows Phone 8, and which is rumored to make a come back.It ...

Is a new Microsoft Xbox Music Locker in the works?

Microsoft has done a fairly decent job with its Xbox Music service, giving us a subscription-based solution that draws the line between Spotify and iTunes in a way. It may not be the best service when it comes to making every title available to you as part of your subscription, and even though it does have a music-matching option, it still doesn’t compete with services like Amazon or Google Music in that you can upload your own music to these services and play them everywhere. New rumors have Microsoft working on a new music locker service that plans to use OneDrive as its locker ...

Xbox Music on iOS & Android vs. Windows Phone 8 & Windows 8 (Video)

Microsoft released Xbox Music apps for Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android today in order to expand the cross platform capabilities of their music subscription service once known as Zune Pass.  The service has been available on Windows, Windows 8, Xbox 360, Windows Phone and the old Zune players since forever, but now you can finally use it on iOS and Android devices as well.  How does the experience compare though?  Is it just as good or not quite? Xbox Music for iOS and Android The new Xbox Music apps for iOS and Android are practically identical to each other… and ...

Windows Phone’s Xbox Music Store now includes playlists and mixtapes

Back in the Zune days, one of the coolest features was the ability to download playlists and “mixtapes” from the Zune music store.  That feature kind of got lost with the switch to Windows Phone and the rebranding of Xbox Music.  You could sometimes find some good store-generated playlists if you did a search, but they were never very discoverable in the Windows Phone Store.  Luckily that has changed today as now you should see a “Top Playlists” section in the Windows Phone 8 Store’s Music section.  You can find playlists within each genre now.  ...

The Best Part of Windows Phone 7 is Now the Worst Part of Windows Phone 8

You might be able to read that headline and interpret it as saying that everything in Windows Phone 8 has improved so much that the best part of the previous version is now the worst part of the latest version.  Or you might read that as saying the best part of the previous version has been completely ruined in Windows Phone 8.  The latter is going to be the case here. Let’s start with what was in my opinion the best part of Windows Phone 7; the Music & Videos hub combined with the fantastic Zune Pass service.  Back in 2010 there was nothing like it.  Nothing else was as good ...

The Pocketnow Weekly Podcast, Episode 037

We love us some new technology, and we certainly give it its fair shake on today’s episode of the Pocketnow Weekly. But every so often, you need to give a little lip-service to the tech of days gone by. The platforms and devices of yesteryear. That’s right: I’m talking about dead technology. It makes sense, then, that a man going by the twitter handle DeadTechnology is here to help us dust off those fond memories. In his inaugural visit to the Pocketnow Weekly, our own Adam Doud pulls back the veil of public apathy secrecy surrounding the phenomenon of the “webOS ...
