Sony Xperia Z1s mystery continues as phone hits China’s TENAA

What the heck is going on with Sony and its plans for what we’ve been calling the Xperia Z1s? If you haven’t been keeping up with the story, it’s a real puzzle: Sony introduced a mini version of the Xperia Z1 as the Xperia Z1f in Japan. Then we saw a leaked model claiming to be the Xperia Z1s, an international version of the Z1f. Except, in the weeks that followed, all these leaks ...

Sony Xperia Z1S appears back on camera as questions get raised about its name

Rumor was, Sony intended to launch the international version of the Xperia Z1F – the Z1S, unofficially known as the Z1 mini – last week, but the manufacturer ultimately failed to deliver. That didn’t stop us from getting a new look at the hardware, and as we sit back and wait for this phone to finally go official, we’ve got a couple new pics to check out, and some fresh chatter about its launch name to pore through. This time, we step things up ...

Sony dishes on Android 4.4, 4.3 updates for Xperia family

Android 4.4: either you’ve got it, or you want it (or you’re on iOS or WP8, in which case, why are you reading this?). The majority of Android users find themselves in the latter situation for the moment, but even then Google’s been releasing app updates to bring portions of the KitKat experience your way. Still, nothing substitutes for the real thing, so most of you out there are probably hoping to learn the details on upgrade plans from your handset’s manufacturer. If that means turning to Sony for news ...

Nexus 5 compared to other flagships

The Nexus 5 has arrived, and this isn’t just another flagship. As the Nexus handset of the year, this is the phone that best reflects Google’s vision for Android, both where it is now, and where it’s going form here. And as you’ve no doubt seen from our heavy coverage of rumors and leaks leading up to today’s launch, that means the Nexus 5 is finding itself simply getting a boatload of attention. There’s a lot to like about the Nexus 5, and while a solid chunk of that is thanks to the latest ...

Sony Xperia Z1 software update said to improve camera

Sony claims the Xperia Z1 has “the world’s leading camera in a smartphone”. We were not that impressed with the imaging capabilities of the phone with the occasion of our review but we expressed our hope that the manufacturer can further improve it. Sony posted about a refresh for the Z1 recently and, alongside “performance and stability tweaks”, there’s also a new “camera algorithm for even better all round performance”. Those who received the Sony Xperia Z1 software ...

Sony Xperia Z1S leaked as the global Xperia Z1f

We’ll admit that even though the Xperia Z1f was a Japanese exclusive, we did like the concept we though we’d never get. What made this phone special, is that this would be one of the few phones in the market to sport all the same flagship specs of the Xperia Z1, but in a smaller chassis. Usually this never happens, as in the past if you wanted a phone with flagship specs, you simply had to accept this phone to be big. As it turns out we’ve landed some leaks of the new Xperia Z1S, which seems to ...

Sony Xperia Z1 available in the US

The Sony Xperia Z1 is the current Sony flagship and it is a rather impressive device, as we’ve recently seen in our full review of the global/international unlocked flavor. At that time, US availability was not certain, despite some reports and leaks mentioning an upcoming version on T-Mobile’s line-up. However, as of ...

T-Mobile Sony Xperia Z1 leaked

We’ve recently learned that Sony’s smartphone strategy involves deliberately avoiding the US, but as we read that now, in the context of this recent leak, it makes less sense. What we have above is apparently the upcoming T-Mobile Sony Xperia Z1, allegedly coming soon to the US. Not much else is new, judging by the press render above. We’re most likely seeing the same Sony Xperia Z1 which we’ve ...

Sony Xperia Z1 Android 4.4 KitKat coming November 7, claims report

The Sony Xperia Z1, out of the box, and, as of today, and our review, is powered by Android 4.2.2. However, that’s about to change, and, a recent report claims knowledge of the phone maker’s plans to push the latest and greatest version of Android, not even official yet, 4.4 KitKat, to the king of waterproof phones. November 7 is the date rumored for such a release. Furthermore, it is being claimed that other ...

Why can’t Sony get it right?

Can we all agree on one thing? Sony makes some beautiful devices. Hat tip to everyone in Sony’s design department. The Xperia Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra, and even earlier devices, like the Xperia S and Xperia ion, are gorgeous. All of these devices are genuinely beautiful smartphones, and the Tablet Z is just as beautiful in its larger form. Their expansive glass surfaces, ruggedized plastic (or metal, depending on the model) trim, and distinguished hard corners, all make these smartphones, aesthetically, stick out from the swarm of other smartphones. Most of them are known to ...

Sony Xperia Z1 review: the king of waterproof phones

The Sony Xperia Z from the very beginning of the year tried to close the gap between ruggedized (sort of) and flagship phones. There were a lot of pros, and, of course, cons, but we applaud Sony for taking the project further. At this year’s IFA, in Berlin, the Japanese company unveiled the Xperia Z1, the natural evolution to the Xperia Z from CES. It is improved in many categories over its predecessor, bringing improved IP-ratings, better specs, a larger camera, and, to sum it up, basically a better ...

Sony Xperia Z1 f could be how “Honami Mini” arrives

A little over a month ago, right before IFA, we checked out an image purporting to depict Sony’s Honami Mini. We’ve since seen Honami itself go official as the Xperia Z1, but what of this pint-sized version? Now it’s making a reappearance in some leaked carrier docs, which seem to reveal its launch name as the Xperia Z1 f. The best part is that the Z1′s great camera appears to be returning, apparently unchanged. Where we do see sacrifices made with ...

Sony Xperia Z1 vs Nokia Lumia 925 (Video)

After comparing the Sony Xperia Z1 with two of the leading Android smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy S 4 and the HTC One, we decided not to neglect the Windows Phone fans out there. Whether they want to switch to the Xperia Z1 from the Lumia 925, or some of you want to decide between getting one of these two devices, this is ...

Sony Xperia Z1 vs HTC One (Video)

After previously looking at the Sony Xperia Z1 and the Samsung Galaxy S 4, today we’re leveling things off a bit, comparing it to another aluminum-and-glass phone, another classic, the HTC One. If, in the case of the S 4, they were each other’s complete opposites on the outside, with similarities on the inside, when it comes to the Z1 and the One, it’s kind of the other way around. We’re looking at a fresh phone versus a six-seven month old device, even if a flagship. ...

Watch today’s Pocketnow Daily as we talk about our iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C first impressions after our review has begun. Then we talk about Microsoft’s idea to build phablets using Windows RT. We end today’s show talking about the Oppo N1 possibly becoming the first CynanogenMod phone in the market. All this and more after the break. Stories: -
