The fall 2016-released Asus ZenFone 3 Deluxe (model number ZS550KL) used to run Android Marshmallow, then Nougat, and now Oreo following a relatively early official upgrade.

Two Asus ZenFone 3 variants with mid-range specs score official Android Oreo updates

You probably didn't expect the Asus ZenFone 3 to receive OTA Oreo goodies so fast, let alone two ZenFone 3 models with middling Snapdragon 625 processing power.

ASUS claims Android O soon for ZenFone 3, ZenFone 4 lines

So many ZenFone 3 and ZenFone 4 devices, so much time needed to update them to ZenUI 4.0 (if applicable) and Android 8.0.

OnePlus rolling out update for emergency calls bug, other Android phones still at risk

But it's not just the OnePlus 5 that's affected by a bug that kills 911 and 999 calls — several other Android phones do so with no clear pattern to it.

Asus ZenFone 3 Deluxe (ZS550KL) gets Android 7.0 Nougat love over-the-air

The first Asus phone to score official Android 7.0 Nougat goodies is obviously the ZenFone 3 Deluxe, but not the higher-end version.

Upcoming Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom revealed to feature dual rear cam, huge 5000mAh battery

While we certainly hoped we’d ultimately find out a bit more about the “Zennovation” star of next month’s CES 2017, China’s Tenaa and the Bluetooth Special Interest Group have just unveiled inside information on the Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom beyond anyone’s wildest dreams.

Yes, even that product name is already confirmed as part of regulatory Bluetooth SIG documents published the other day. Plus, a Z01HDA model number, and alternative ZE553KL designation. That’s awfully close to ZenFone 3 Max’s ZC553KL denomination, and the two are actually quite similar as far as external designs go.

But somehow, the soon-to-be-released ZenFone 3 Zoom squeezes a gigantic battery with a capacity of around 5,000 mAh (“just” 4,850, according to the Chinese FCC equivalent) into a 170-gram, 8mm-slim metallic package.

That sounds like a breathtaking engineering feat (if it pans out), given the comparatively small 4,100 mAh cell under ZenFone 3 Max’s hood, and the super-chunky body of the original 5,000 mAh juicer-hauling Asus ZenFone Max.

But wait, there’s more. This “most creative” ever ZenFone will apparently have a dual rear-facing camera setup going for it too, as well as up to 4GB RAM, and sadly, a middling octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor replacing the ultra-high-end SD835 we know you were all so badly craving.

Back to the trendy dual main shooter expected to grace ZenFone 3 Zoom’s elegant behind, this may sport 12.2 and 13MP sensors, sitting flush with the rest of the chassis instead of forming an unpleasant bulge.

Asus heads to CES 2017 for cryptic ‘Zennovation’ event possibly starring Snapdragon 835 phone

Let the CES 2017 teasing games begin. Xiaomi actually got the ball rolling by saying “hello Vegas” a couple of weeks back in anticipation of a mysterious “all-new” global product launch, and now Asus follows suit with a similarly cryptic “Zennovation” invite and countdown webpage.

We’re a little over 27 days away from a January 4 press event happening at the Caesars Palace in Vegas, where the media will “experience” the multitasking Taiwanese company’s “latest innovations that will expand your vision and stretch the imagination.”

In addition to the more than obvious Zen clue regarding the branding of these fast-approaching “innovative” new Asus devices, we’re also told to expect Qualcomm Snapdragon processing power inside.

It’s hard not to jump to conclusions and hope for the best, dreaming of an extremely early Snapdragon 835-packing ZenFone 4 announcement, but let’s keep in mind there are many other chips included in QCM’s industry-leading roster.

The ZenFone 3, as well as its numerous derivations, are also far too young to already prompt sequels, though the ZenFone Zoom isn’t. The photography-focused 5.5-incher was in fact unveiled at the previous Consumer Electronics Show before launching stateside at $400, and a follow-up effort should be right around the corner. With even greater optical zoom, presumably, and perhaps SD835 muscle after all.

Asus ZenFone 3 Max is up for grabs now with US warranty, huge battery, fingerprint sensor

Just in time for Black Friday, Asus has officially brought its third ZenFone 3 variant stateside. This is not a “deluxe” phone, nor does it feature a rear-facing camera with a fancy laser auto-focus, let alone augmented reality capabilities.

But the Asus ZenFone 3 Max is unusually cheap… for a 5.2-inch Android handheld that packs such a large battery it can even work as a portable power bank charging your other digital devices while you’re away from a traditional electrical socket.

Amazingly, the $149 Marshmallow gadget sold on Amazon with a US warranty and 4G LTE connectivity for GSM networks including AT&T and T-Mobile merely measures 8.6mm thick, also tipping the scales at 148 grams, despite carrying around a 4,130, yes, 4,130 mAh cell.

The 5.2-inch IPS LCD screen sports 1,280 x 720 pixels resolution, which sounds modest, but when you think about it, actually helps squeeze the most out of that already impressive juicer. The same goes for the mediocre-sounding quad-core MediaTek MT6737M processor, with 2GB RAM, as well as 13 and 5MP cams also in tow.

A rear-positioned fingerprint reader not only beefs up security, allowing you to activate the camera with a swipe, and the “glacier silver” low-cost Android soldier claims a pretty remarkable 75 percent screen-to-body ratio to seal the $149 pre-Black Friday deal. No further discounts incoming, we presume.

Google Tango-based Asus ZenFone AR phone coming at CES, all-in-one VR device later in 2017

Like most other non-Chinese mobile and PC hardware manufacturers, Taiwan-based Asus had a relatively poor Q3 2016 financial showing, and although the ZenFone 3 family, ZenPad 3S 10 and ZenWatch 3 are due to spread worldwide this quarter, they’re only expected to generate a small profit.

In the long (-er) haul however, there are a few avant-garde products reportedly in the pipeline likely to boost the company’s profile as a global industry innovator. In addition to that very inconspicuous leather-strapped VR headset quickly showcased at Computex a while back, and one of those low-cost Windows 10 PC-compatible HoloLens alternatives, Asus is also working on a so-called “all-in-one” virtual reality device.

This would stand out from the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift-led pack with “built-in cameras, sensors and controllers”, not needing a connected computer or smartphone to immerse you into a parallel universe.

It remains to be seen now if Asus can meet its self-imposed Q3 2017 deadline for the AIO VR headset’s release, and whether or not Google or Samsung might get a head start in a no doubt potential-brimming market segment.

But first, it seems CEO Jerry Shen spilled the beans on the ZenFone AR’s debut during January’s CES Las Vegas event, with the “competitively priced”, super-advanced smartphone following in Lenovo Phab 2 Pro’s Google Tango-supporting footsteps.

We don’t know an awful lot about the world’s looming second ever augmented reality phone, just that it’s coming several months before the ZenFone 4 lineup with “enhanced cameras.” Color us intrigued.
