US FCC reaffirms ZTE is a national security threat over a petition to reconsider

The US Federal Communications Commission (US FCC), back in June this year, declared ZTE as well as HUAWEI as threats to national security. The order meant that funds from the US FCC’s $8.3 billion a year Universal Service Fund can’t be used to buy equipment or procure services from the two companies. Today, the US FCC has re-affirmed its stance of classifying ZTE as a threat to national security following a petition to reconsider the order.

In a press release, the US FCC revealed that it has denied a reconsideration petition filed by ZTE over the agency’s order that designated it as a national security risk. “After reviewing the record, the Bureau found no basis for reconsideration. As a result, the FCC’s $8.3 billion a year Universal Service Fund cannot be used to purchase, obtain, maintain, improve, modify, or otherwise support any equipment or services produced or provided by ZTE as well as its parents, affiliates, and subsidiaries,” the FCC noted

The US FCC is going to conduct a meeting on December 10 where the commission will take votes for drafting and implementing rules of the Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Reimbursement program. The latter is aimed at helping carrier partners ‘remove and replace untrusted equipment from their networks, months before the statutory deadline.’

December 10 meeting to decide if existing ZTE telecom gear will be removed from US soil.

The denial by FCC’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau means US companies can’t buy telecom equipment from ZTE, and depending on the voting results of the December 10 meeting, existing ZTE telecom gear might be removed from the US soil as well. The US FCC has previously claimed, based on evidence it has gathered, that equipment made by ZTE and HUAWEI can be used for espionage – a claim both the companies have denied on multiple occasions in the past.

A host of rural carriers in the US have been using ZTE or HUAWEI gear, and as per UC FCC’s own estimates, replacing the telecom equipment might cost anywhere between $40 million and $45 million for each company. As for the overall cost, it would cost a total of almost $1.8 billion to fully get rid of Chinese telecom equipment.

ZTE has announced the launch of the world’s first smartphone with an under-display camera. The company says that it has achieved a full view display effect while maintaining the same level of performance of the front camera by adapting a special material with high euphotic rates achieved through new organic and inorganic film, which improves light input to the front camera.

There is a dual-control chip and a unique driver circuit that solves synchronization problems of color and conventional displays when using an under-display camera. ZTE created a special matrix that optimizes pixels to improve display consistency and create a more
natural transition of pixels.

ZTE could launch the world’s first under-display camera smartphone

The next smartphone innovation is expected to be under-display camera sensors. The technology is expected to come embedded in the flagship phones next year. It is expected that many smartphone manufacturers are working on this tech. However, ZTE has gone ahead and confirmed that it will be soon launching the world’s first under-display camera smartphone.

The ZTE Axon 20 5G could be the first phone to come equipped with an in-display selfie shooter. ZTE’s President of Mobile Devices, Ni Fei took to Weibo to confirm the development. While Fei did not reveal the name or launch date of the smartphone, a well-known Chinese tipster revealed that Fei could be referring to the ZTE Axon 20 5G.

The flagship smartphone is said to use China-based Visionox’s solution for its under-display camera technology. Visionex confirmed last month that it had started the mass production of its under-display camera solution and phones featuring will be debuting soon.

FCC classifies HUAWEI and ZTE as national security threats

Making things even more difficult for HUAWEI and fellow Chinese company ZTE, the US Federal Communications Commission (US FCC) has designated the two as threats to national security. Chairman Ajit Pai said in a statement that the action has been taken in view of evidence that the two companies are a threat to the country’s communications network and have close ties to the Chinese government.

Following the order, money from US FCC’s $8.3 billion a year Universal Service Fund can no longer be used to purchase equipment or procure services from HUAWEI and ZTE, as well as their affiliates, parent companies, and subsidiaries. HUAWEI and ZTE are yet to respond, but both companies have denied the allegations of links with the Chinese government and security risks in the past.

“Both companies have close ties to the Chinese Communist Party and China’s military apparatus, and both companies are broadly subject to Chinese law obligating them to cooperate with the country’s intelligence services,” FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said. “We cannot and will not allow the Chinese Communist Party to exploit network vulnerabilities and compromise our critical communications infrastructure.”
