Why you need to get the iPhone X with Sky Mobile

The iPhone X is one of the blockbuster phones of the year. Apple says it's the future of phones, there's a whole lot of screen, and it's got people queuing outside the firm's stores again. In short, the iPhone X is rather special, and it deserves special treatment when it comes to your phone deal too.

Say hello to Sky Mobile, the mobile network that offers freedom, flexibility and great value.

There are not many deals that can get you an iPhone X for FREE - yes, paying nothing up front - but Sky Mobile gives you that freedom.

On Swap24 there's no upfront cost for the iPhone X and you get free unlimited calls and texts for just £42 a month with 500MB data if you're a Sky TV customer.

Or if you want a new iPhone every year, you can swap to the latest phone in 12 months for just £12 extra a month with a £99 upfront cost with Swap12.

The iPhone X is pretty much all screen - a stunning 5.8-inch display greets you when just look at the handset. You don’t even need to touch it, a simple glance at the iPhone X and Apple’s Face ID technology will recognise your features and wake itself.

On a roll

With so much screen, you’ll be forgiven for wanting to make the most of it wherever you go. From streaming movies and TV shows and downloading the latest apps and games to FaceTiming and Snapchatting to your heart's content - it all works wonderfully on the iPhone X, but it also requires a lot of data.

Sky Mobile is on hand though. With Roll you can roll over any unused data for up to three years. There's no limit to the amount you can store and if you run out of data you can simply dip into your Sky Piggybank whenever you like. Handy in a month when you're binging on the latest series of Game of Thrones, or blasting your way through the latest Pokemon Go craze.

Whether you opt for Swap24 or Swap12, you don't have to pay the same amount for the same allowances every month. With Sky Mobile's Mix you have the freedom to mix up your data, calls and texts every month so you can create a plan that’s just right for you.

If you find yourself using more data than you expected on your shiny new iPhone X - you'll want to Instagram every photo from its best-in-class dual 12MP cameras - you can easily increase your data allowance.

Then, during quieter months you can change your plan whenever you like, to reduce your monthly outlay, so you only pay for what you need. Maybe treat yourself to a new album on iTunes, or that game you've had your eye on in the App Store with the extra cash?

And keep an eye out for Sky Mobile's iPhone X Black Friday deals from November 17 to November 30, where it'll be offering double data on its 500MB and 1GB tariffs.

Join the rush to get your hands on the new OnePlus 5

Sometimes a smartphone comes along that will see people queue for hours on the hottest day of the year just to get their hands on it first - and that’s what happened with the OnePlus 5.

With the launch of the new handset from OnePlus, a device that combines brilliant design with hugely impressive specs and a stunning camera, the brand decided to create pop-up events in Europe and the US, giving dedicated tech fans a chance to get their hands on the much-anticipated handset early.

But it wasn’t just the hardcore OnePlus contingent that queued - those that had never bothered getting in line for a new phone also took the chance to be among the very first to check out the device, such was its appeal.

And both sets of of fans lapped up the opportunity, travelling from hundreds of miles away and queuing for hours just to get their hands on the OnePlus 5.

With so many identikit smartphones on the market right now, the new OnePlus phone offers incredible attention to detail where it matters the most, and that’s what resonates with so many fans.

Many are entranced by the power on offer, with up to 8GB RAM combined with an industry-leading Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset to offer specs beyond nearly anything else on the market, and certainly not in a package this attractive.

The camera brings DSLR-like qualities, with the dual sensor taking brilliant pictures in low light and offering a bokeh effect to really highlight the person in the shot while blurring out the background.

That’s the kind of thing that inspired some fans to travel over 1000 miles and set up camp outside the pop-up event from 4AM.

Those fans love the fact the phone is created in a way that works for them - with the design team at OnePlus so hell-bent on making the perfect phone that some prototypes were remade just to move a button a couple of millimeters.

That focus led to the OnePlus 5 being dubbed the best-looking phone the brand has ever produced - with the rounded metal body just 7.25mm thick sitting beautifully in the hand.

Unique features

That’s backed up with unique features that only OnePlus offers, like an Android-powered smartphone with a physical switch to silence the phone instantly, should you realise in a meeting or the cinema that you’ve forgotten to do so and don’t want to look rude pulling out your handset.

Or offering Dash Charge, which will top up your phone from dead to enough power for the day in just 30 mins, meaning you’ll never have to worry about running out of battery when you can just plug in the charger quickly and be ready for whatever life throws at you.

The idea was to make a phone that fitted into a user’s daily lifestyle, not just one that was designed to only look good.

That’s the kind of thing that inspired one OnePlus fan to reschedule his flight home from Kenya simply so he could attend the London pop-up event and get his hands on a OnePlus 5 before anyone else.

And the engagement with the fans doesn’t stop there - the OnePlus 5 Extreme Unboxing competition is live, following the hugely successful event which saw a fan sky-diving to check out the OnePlus 3T.

So if you’re looking for a phone that does everything you want but not sure which one to go for, just take a look at how many people couldn’t wait to get their hands on the OnePlus 5. After all, that many people can’t be wrong, right?

Own a Samsung Galaxy S8 or Plus? These are the accessories you should buy today

Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus are two of the best phones on the market in 2017, and there are a variety of accessories you can buy to protect and improve your smartphone experience.

From phone cases to keyboards, battery packs to wireless chargers, they’ll have you covered when it comes to accessorising your phone, and the best bit is each is made by Samsung.

That means it’s specifically designed for either the Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 Plus so you know it’ll fit and work with your phone perfectly.

For example, Samsung’s Clear View Standing Cover allows you to easily prop your phone up on the desk when you’re watching video as well as controlling your music without having to open up the whole case.

There’s the new LED Cover that shows important data on your lock screen including your alarms, the time and incoming calls without having to slide open your phone at all.

Samsung’s Clear Cover is the perfect choice if you’re after something simple and at only 0.8mm thick it won’t make your phone feel bulky in your pocket either.

One of the boldest options from Samsung is perhaps the Alcantara Cover that feels and looks like suede but is durable and won’t stain easily. This comes in Silver, Mint, Blue or Pink.

The Soft Touch Cover from Samsung gives a smooth feel to the back of the phone but also offers great grip and solid protection from scratches and the odd drop on the floor too.

The final cover from Samsung is the 2Piece, which looks unlike anything you’ve seen before. This cover comes in two pieces – obviously - that attach to the top and bottom of your phone with suction pads and while offering protection also allow you to see the beautiful design of the Galaxy S8.

If you’re looking for a productivity device for your Galaxy S8, there’s the Keyboard Cover for your phone that offers you a QWERTY design and just snaps on the bottom. You won’t even need to charge this separately, it just works as soon as you clip it on.

Speaking of battery life, there is a selection of power banks and wireless chargers from Samsung to ensure you’re always charged up whether it’s on the go, at home or at your desk.

The Wireless Convertible Charger from Samsung is the perfect desk accessory that acts as both a stand so you can see incoming notifications from your phone as well as charging it up without having to plug it in. You get the choice of either Couch Black or Couch Brown.

Then for when you’re on the go you can use the Samsung Battery Pack – in either Navy Blue or Grey – that offers 5,100mAh of extra battery. That will charge up the Galaxy S8 at least one and a half times, while the Galaxy S8 Plus will get just a little over a full charge.

You can buy all of these accessories starting from just £17.00 directly from Samsung today via the Samsung Shop!

OnePlus 3T is the flagship phone people are queuing round the block for

It’s a cold Thursday afternoon in December and there are over a hundred people queuing up outside a phone store on Oxford Street, London. There’s no celebrity appearance, no discounts to be had, rather they’re there to get exclusive early access to a brand new smartphone before it goes on sale.

The phone? The OnePlus 3T

Surprised? You shouldn’t be.

The plucky start-up has been quietly perfecting the art of the flagship over the past three years, and the OnePlus 3T is its most complete offering yet with a boost in battery life, a better selfie snapper and a slicker experience on screen.

It’s a smartphone that comfortably holds in own against the top handsets from the established names – and then there’s the price. Starting from £399 it’s significantly cheaper than its rivals, but it doesn’t skimp on spec.

No wonder the O2 store on Oxford Street was inundated with eager fans four days ahead of the OnePlus 3T going on general sale then, and it shows just how far the firm has come in such a short amount of time.

Style and substance

The premium metal build of the OnePlus 3T oozes class, the Snapdragon 821 chipset and 6GB of RAM means there’s no phone more powerful, and its 3,400mAh battery will easily see out a full day on a single charge and can be topped up in a flash with speedy Dash charging smart.

Round the back there’s a strong 16MP Sony-made camera, and that’s complimented on the front by a second 16MP snapper – perfect for all your FaceBook Live and Snapchat stories.

Alexandru Girbo travelled all the way from Oxford to be first in line and he said: “I can’t believe that I’m the first person in the country to get my hands on the OnePlus 3T. I can’t wait to try it out.”

While many things sound too good to be true, the OnePlus 3T is nothing but the truth. The OnePlus will is available on OnePlus.net and online and instore at O2.

Want to see more of the OnePlus 3T? Check out this extreme unboxing!

Pick up the smartphone essentials everyone needs this Black Friday

Your smartphone is likely you most used piece of technology – it runs our social lives, manages our emails, feeds our gaming addictions and so much more, but are you treating your most treasured possession right?

It’s all very well picking up a shiny new smartphone, but you tend to get a single charger in the box and – if you’re lucky – a set of decidedly average headphones. That’s useful if you never leave the house, but for those of you who venture past the front door you’ll want to make sure you’re properly equipped.

There are a number of accessories for your phone which will enhance your mobile life, and with a raft of Black Friday deals just around the corner there’s no better time to equip yourself.

Here are three of our favourite smartphone essentials for you to keep an eye out for this Black Friday.

The cable is mightier than the sword

If you pick just one item to buy from this list, an additional charging cable should be it. We can’t tell you the number of times we’ve left our only charging cable at home, forcing us to reduce power, screen brightness and connectivity in a desperate attempt to salvage the last 15% of battery life.

We have learned from our mistakes though, and are now the proud owners of multiple cables – a couple around the house, one at work, one in our bag and another in our car. You can never have too many.

They’re inexpensive, and likely to be even cheaper in the Black Friday sales. Just make sure you get the right one for your phone.

iPhone owners will need to pick a Lightning connection, while most of the flagship Android smartphones from 2016 boasts USB Type-C ports – so a USB Type-C cable will need to be on your shopping list.

Cheaper and older Android phones generally require a microUSB connection.

Power without plugs

You may have all the cables in the world, but if you’re not near a plug socket they’re about as useful as a Cheestrings – but at least you can eat the Cheestrings.

A portable power pack can come to your rescue. These rechargeable batteries can be smartphone lifesavers and are available in various sizes.

If you looking for something discreet and lightweight take a look at power banks which are between 2,000mAh and 4,000mAh in size. These will generally give you one complete charge (depending on the size of your smartphone’s battery) when you’re away from a plug.

There are bigger beasts out there though, and if you want one that will give you multiple recharges then take a look at the power packs ranging from 10,000mAh to 30,000mAh. These are perfect for long haul flights and festivals.

Can you hear me now?

It’s becoming  increasingly common for manufacturers not to bundle in a set of earphones with their phones. They are still a few who buck the trend – with Apple a prime example – but the buds you do get in the box are generally not great.

They suffice for a quick bit of playback, but they often lack bass, leak sound left, right and centre, can be uncomfortable and don’t do a great job of blocking out surrounding sounds.

This Black Friday why not treat your ears to a better audio experience? A decent set of in-ear or over-the-head headphones can transform not only the music playback on your phone, but also videos and gaming.

If you’re keen to indulge yourself with an early Christmas present grab yourself a set of noise cancelling cans – you might nab yourself a bargain with a Black Friday deal. They can drown out the grunts of fellow commuters on the train and that screaming child at the back of your EasyJet flight.

EasySkinz make sure your iPhone 7 is both beautiful and protected

There’s nothing worse than buying a beautiful, sleek new smartphone and then having to cover it up with a bulky and ugly case to protect it – but in comes EasySkinz as a great alternative.

A skin from EasySkinz allows you to protect your phone from nicks and scratches while also keeping the beautiful design of your phone.

If you have the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, EasySkinz already sell skins ready to protect your brand new phone.

The best part is the 200 colour options, so you can get a protector you really want to wrap around your phone.

Each skin is made in the United Kingdom, but can be bought from anywhere in the world.

For the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus there are even skins in the Jet Black shade meaning you won’t lose the high-gloss design of your new phone, but also won’t scratch it and damage it easily.

Did you also like the Deep Ocean Blue iPhone model that leaked out earlier this year? There’s a deep ocean blue option from EasySkinz which looks just like it, so you can make it look like you own an iPhone colour that never even came out.

EasySkinz covers you if you own an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S or an iPhone 6S Plus.

It’s not just for iPhone users though – EasySkinz skins cover your Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 EDGE, Galaxy S6, iPad Pro 12.9”, iPad Pro 9.7”, iPad Air 2 and many more. You can kit out all of your devices with protective skins.

There are premium skins for your PlayStation 4 or Xbox One as well to help you protect your gaming console from damage it can get underneath your TV at home.

Plus you can kit out your PS4 and Xbox One controllers with skins too, so when you inevitably knock the controllers off the sofa they won’t get damaged.

With hundreds of options available no matter what smartphone, tablet or game console you own, EasySkinz is a great alternative to traditional cases that make your phone larger and mean you lose the fantastic design of your newest gadget.

Be sure to head to www.easyskinz.com to pick up your new skin.

Supercharge your smartphone photography with Black Friday deals

Smartphones are just swell. They’re a phone, music player, gaming machine, portable Netflix and more in our pockets, but one of their greatest features are the cameras.

They’re great for capturing special moments, crazy going-ons and impromptu foam parties, but if you want more from your smartphone snapper you don’t have to buy a whole new handset.

There’s a wealth of accessories you can use to enhance your mobile snapping experience, and with Black Friday deals incoming there’s no better time to pick up additional extras for your phone.

Here are some of our favourite smartphone camera accessories to keep an eye out for this Black Friday.

Lens enhancement

One of the best ways to improve the camera on your smartphone is with another lens. A number of companies offer clip on lenses for your smartphone, giving you various effects such as wide-angle, fish-eye and telephoto.

Olloclip is one of the most well known brands and focuses mainly on iPhones, but there's a wealth of options out there for a variety of different handsets.

Steady as you snap

Most phones are pretty good at fighting against your wobbly arms (especially those with 'OIS' - optical image stabilisation) - but you can't always be guaranteed a steady, shake-free and level shot.

Invest in a tripod though and you'll be able to set up the perfect photo - and you can even feature in it yourself. Smartphone tripods don't have to be expensive - like this best seller on Amazon - and you could bag yourself a real bargain this Black Friday by keeping your eyes peeled.

Flash, ahhhhhh!

Whether it's a single or double LED mounted on the back of your smartphone, there's only so much the dinky lights can do in darker situations.

Brighten up your low-light shots with a dedicated flash unit, and with a range of sizes and modes you'll be able to find the perfect fit for you.

Smashing selfies

Love 'em or hate 'em, there's no denying selfie sticks are actually rather useful, helping you crop out your arm and gain a more flattering angle for your pouts.

What's better is they're pretty cheap already, and that means you could well see some silly Black Friday deals. We'd recommend opting for a stick with a built in camera shutter in the handle for the ultimate ease of use.

Seven great tips to get the most out of your smartphone battery

Do you get to the end of the day and find your phone battery has dropped beyond what you’d hoped? Maybe your phone doesn’t even make it to the end of the day without dying, leaving you scrabbling for a charger like a fevered mole.

Even if you’ve researched and bought the best phone for battery life, after some time it will likely start to die off quickly as the cell inside ages – and if you don't want to have keep shelling out for a new device, you'll need some help to keep things ticking over.

Here’s a selection of our favourite tips you should try to save your phone's battery – follow these steps and you should be able to prolong your battery life throughout the day.

1. Turn your screen brightness down

It may seem obvious, but the number one tip for saving your smartphone battery life is turning down your screen brightness. If you dive into the battery stats on your phone right now you’ll notice the screen is one of the biggest drains.

Some people don’t even realise how bright they have their smartphone screens. Turn yours down to 50% and you’re sure to save a big part of your battery life on a daily basis.

You can boost the brightness back up when you need to watch a quick YouTube video or flick through some snaps (just remember to turn it down again afterwards).

2. Turn off connectivity

Not using your Fitbit at the moment? There’s no reason to have Bluetooth turned on then. Connectivity options such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 4G, 3G and GPS don’t need to be on at all times.

If you’re not anticipating a notification, why not leave the internet off on your phone for a little bit longer? It means your phone won’t be constantly trying to find a signal and won’t be working so hard in the process.

That’s why it makes sense to download music and media before you leave the house to save battery throughout the day, plus it won’t use all that much of your data either.

And if you really want to keep the juice saved, consider flight mode for an hour or two when you want to stay off-grid – giving you loads of extra power while your phone's not searching for sweet connectivity.

3. Limit your apps

How many apps do you need to have running at one time? There are some points when you’ll be multitasking with both media and messaging, but be sure to shut some down when you don’t need them.

Google Maps, for example, may still be asking the phone to triangulate your phone using GPS if the app is running in the background.

Just be sure to switch off the apps you’re not using and get in the habit of closing each when you’re done with it. You’ll likely find your phone is even more capable when it’s not trying to run 20 apps at the same time.

4. Black wallpapers

If you own a phone with an AMOLED screen, such as a recent Samsung flagship like the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S6, you’ll save battery by choosing a black wallpaper.

AMOLED screens only put power into the colour pixels, so if you have a pure black back screen your phone won’t have to push so much power into the display to light it up.

This won’t work if you own an iPhone, but it will help those who have an AMOLED display-toting Android phone and want to save on battery life.

5. Turn it off sometimes

It may seem simple, but if you’re in dire need of saving battery life on your phone turning it off will do the trick.

When you know you won’t be using your phone, be sure to turn it off at that moment to avoid draining it of all the precious juice you’ll need later that day.

6. Be clean with your apps

If your battery has 'suddenly' become rubbish, it's not usually your phone that's killing it, it's an app.

Have a look in the battery section of your settings menu (or 'Usage' on an iPhone) and see if there's anything playing up – some apps will get caught constantly trying to sync, allowing you to just watch that battery meter fall.

Battery

7. Lose the vibration

If you're constantly worried about battery, turning off the little buzzing motor in your phone can help. It's usually located in the 'Sound' settings, and most phones will need you to turn off things like notifications, key presses and other elements separately, but it's worth the effort for that extra juice.

The best value phones you’ve never heard of

If you’re eager for a brand-new phone, but don’t have the necessary readies, then we have some good news.

There are two ways you can get the phone that you want - and save yourself a pretty penny into the bargain.

If you’re after a top quality smartphone from big-name brands such as Apple, Samsung, Sony or HTC your first port of call should be the eBay Refurbished Technology hub

It’s packed with nearly-new smartphones that have been returned by customers – usually because the device had a hardware or software fault, had damaged packaging or the customer simply changed their mind. What happens next is that the device is rigorously checked over by either the original manufacturer or an approved retailer, restored and repaired as necessary, and then put up for sale through eBay.

Because these devices are no longer new, you can typically save 15-30% over the cost of buying a factory-fresh model – and you’re covered by a 12-month eBay warranty.  That’s one way. The other way is to bypass the household names and look for something a little more left-field.

Often you’ll get the same kind of features and specs as you would do on a so-called premium model, you just won’t be paying premium prices to get your hands on them. Here are five fantastic examples…

 1. Oppo F1

Oppo is a Chinese phone brand that you’ve probably never heard of, even though it’s the fourth biggest phone maker in the entire world. The company has been making some impressive handsets in recent years too, and the latest Oppo F1 is no exception.

It features a 720p 5-inch display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 612 processor, 3GB of RAM and a 13MP rear camera but only costs around £200 at the time of writing.

One of the real highlights comes with the selfie camera that features an 8MP sensor making your selfie shots as high-res as you’re ever going to need.

Paired with a beauty mode as well, your selfies are going to look better than those taken on some of the most popular flagship phones.

  2. Huawei G8

Need a full metal phone on a budget? There’s something that feels better about a phone being encased in the shiny stuff and the Huawei G8 is a phone that does it for a nicer price than its bigger sibling, the P9.

The Huawei G8 comes with a fingerprint scanner – something none of the other phones on this list boast – as well as a 5.5-inch Full HD screen and a 13MP rear camera.  That rear camera does especially well in low-light and has a lot of features such as “personalisation” to help you make photos feel special.

With color options of gold, grey and silver you’ll need to spend a little extra than other phones on the list at almost £300, but it’s still a great choice for your next phone.

3. OnePlus X

You may have already heard of OnePlus, but did you know the company does even cheaper phones than its flagship line? OnePlus released the X last year and it comes with some top end spec, but only costs around £240.

It comes with a 5-inch Full HD display, a premium feel design with metal edges and powerful innards that rival a lot of last year’s flagship phones.

The OnePlus X doesn’t support Android Marshmallow software yet and it only has 16GB of onboard storage, but it’s sure to get the upgrade in future and there’s also microSD support meaning this phone will even suit you well if you need lots of space.

5. Xiaomi Redmi 3S

Xiaomi is yet another Chinese manufacturer making great phones on the cheap with the new Redmi 3S only costing just a little over £100.

With a 5-inch 720p display, Android 6 Marshmallow software, 2GB of RAM, a Snapdragon 420 processor and 16GB of storage you’d be forgiven for thinking this was a much more expensive phone from Xiaomi.

It also comes with a huge 4100mAh battery to give you a long lasting life after only a single charge and there’s a 13MP rear-facing camera so you can always get the perfect snap.

Week in Tech: Week in Tech: Apple goes small, Nintendo NX controller fools us all

Week in Tech: Week in Tech: Apple goes small, Nintendo NX controller fools us all

This week's Apple event was all about the little things: a new, small iPhone and a new, smaller iPad Pro. But while these devices may be small but their impact is likely to be huge – especially in the corporate world, where both the iPhone SE and new iPad Pro are likely to be big hits. We've also got our hands on Samsung's latest Windows tablet, we've got the low-down on Android Pay in the UK, and we've discovered the future of both gaming and pornography. It's Week in Tech!

Small iPhone announced, not many dead

The latest iPhone is the iPhone SE, a 4-inch model that looks like the iPhone 5S but which has most of the iPhone 6S inside. So is it any good? John McCann has the facts and figures, and you can also check out our hands-on iPhone SE review. It's cheap by Apple standards – $399 / £359 / AU$679 – and while it looks pretty retro on the outside it's bang up to date inside. We've rounded up the best deals on the new handset here, and here for UK buyers, but as with any iPhone don't expect big discounts so soon after the launch date.

Hey ho, it's a small iPad Pro

We say 'small' relatively speaking. At 9.7 inches, the new iPad Pro is the same size as an iPad Air, but it's a lot less bulky than the 12-inch Pro that Apple currently sells. Inside it's almost identical, albeit clocked slightly slower, and the screen gets Apple's new True Tone display, which adjusts the colour balance based on ambient lighting conditions. It starts at £499 and we think it's the future direction of the iPad, aimed as much at corporate Windows users as it is at sofa surfers and app addicts.

Pick of the Pros

In the blue corner we have the new iPad Pro, and in the red corner we have Microsoft's Surface. They're both aimed at business users, but which one is best? There's only one way to find out: get Joe Osborne to pit them against one another. The result? We won't spoil it here, because the fight is too much fun.

Hey ho, it's the Galaxy TabPro

Samsung makes tablets too, of course, and the Galaxy TabPro S is its latest 10-inch Windows tablet. Kevin Lee likes it a lot, with a few reservations: "As it stands – or attempts to – the TabPro S only works perfectly if you use it in the exact way Samsung has envisioned. But, damn, is this one slick Windows 10 tablet."

Android Pay in the UK

Wave goodbye to your wallets and pack up your purses: Android Pay is coming to the UK. Not all UK banks are on board – Barclays won't be supporting the service at launch, and neither will Santander, NatWest and a few others – but most of the big names will be joining the Android Pay party. When is it actually happening? Google says "in the next few months".

Ten years of tweets

Twitter turned 10 this week – but will it still be here in another ten years? Hugh Langley is on the case. It's hardly in trouble, he says, but there are clouds on the horizon. Twitter is "spending a lot of money, stock has tanked, and user growth has slowed dramatically. There is also a large number of lapsed users that Twitter is trying to win back". Langley also looks at how Twitter can rise to its many challenges.

Probably not the NX generation of gaming

Is this our first look at the Nintendo NX's rather smudge-prone controller? Afraid not. Some "leaked" images had the internet in a frenzy this week, however it turned out that they were 3D-printed fakes all along, based another fake previously "leaked" (which the hoaxer also owned up to on Reddit).

The pranksters of the latest fakes even uploaded a video explaining how they did it. The takeaway? Trust nobody.

Get a PlayStation on your phone

Fancy playing PlayStation games on your phone? Some PS4 users with Sony handsets already can, but Sony's ambitions are much bigger: it's formed a new company to bring PlayStation characters and titles to the major mobile platforms. The new company, ForwardWorks, will power up on April the 1st – but we're pretty sure it isn't an April Fool.

Grumble flicks in your face

If there's one thing we know about tech, it's that sooner or later it's exploited by the adult entertainment industry – so it's not a great surprise that smut site Pornhub has created a new section dedicated to virtual reality pornography. The videos are being made by the excellently named BaDoinkVR, and they're the first VR porn flicks to be made available without subscription fees attached. The site is so confident that VR is the future that it's giving away 10,000 VR headsets to early adopters.

Week in Tech: Week in Tech: Chu Detective, why Alphabet rules, and the multi-million dollar keyboard

Week in Tech: Week in Tech: Chu Detective, why Alphabet rules, and the multi-million dollar keyboard

This week we discovered that everything can change in an instant. One minute you're the hot favourite for the top political job; the next, you're regretting those tweets in which you called everybody losers. And it's the same in tech. This week we saw Apple knocked from its perch as the world's most valuable company, and we saw a family favourite go to a very dark place indeed. It's Week in Tech!

Google is good, Apple is doomed

Something interesting happened in the world of tech: Alphabet, Google's parent company, became more valuable than Apple – which means it became the world's most valuable company. We're using the past tense because Apple quickly recaptured the lead, which is based on share valuations rather than anything sensible, but it's still significant: Apple has been far ahead of Google since 2010, and most of its valuation is reliant on a single product, the iPhone. Alphabet is much more diverse, which means it's less exposed to shocks should one of its key products hit some obstacles.

Apple's March event: what to expect

Apple's next big launch event will take place on March 15, and while it won't be about the iPhone 7 – that's set for an Autumn reveal – we should see some interesting new devices. Multiple reports say there will be a 4-inch iPhone 5SE to replace the iPhone 5S, a four-speaker iPad Air 3 to update the main iPad range, and new Apple Watch bands. An updated Watch may be on the cards too, but if it happens it'll be a tweaked S model rather than a brand new version. As always we'll have the full details as soon as Tim Cook shows them off.

LG G5: launch date and new leaks

The LG G5 launch is so close we can almost touch it: the firm has confirmed a February 21 event at MWC 2016, and a bevy of new leaks suggest it will have some pretty tasty features. There are two rear cameras, a removable battery, a metal design and – most intriguingly of all – a "mysterious hardware expansion slot". That's not its official name, but it'd be great if it was. We've collated all the latest rumours and renders, and put them on our LG G5 page for your excitement and delightment.

Could you be the most beautiful phone in the world?

Well, no. But the new Vaio Phone Biz more than compensates for its awful name by being the best-looking Windows Phone ever made. And while that may sound like faint praise, akin to "the world's most sarcastic Yorkshireman" or "least irritating YouTube vlogger", the Biz really is rather pretty. Vaio used to be Sony's high-end brand, but the computing and phone arm was sold off and is now its own company, fully independent of the Japanese giant. If its designs stay as interesting as this, the Vaio name could be destined for greatness once more.

Microsoft: the future of phones and football

You don't need a Windows Phone to benefit from Microsoft's technology: it's coming for your iPhone and Android, and for your face. First we discovered that Microsoft had bought Swiftkey, the predictive keyboard developer, and then we saw Microsoft's vision for "immersive sports entertainment": using Hololens to watch the Super Bowl. And the two stories are more connected than they seem. The Swiftkey keyboard is great, but what Microsoft is really after is the developer's artificial intelligence smarts – smarts that could one day help Hololens decide what to show you, or help power virtual assistants.

D'oh, d'oh good

The internet is pretty good, but when it comes to finding the perfect Simpsons image to illustrate your meme it's not great. Hurrah, then, for Frinkiac, a Simpsons-specific search engine. As Stephen Lambrechts explains: "Pulling images from the first 15 seasons of The Simpsons (because we all know that absolutely nothing memorable has occurred in the seasons since), Frinkiac finds stills using the indexed subtitles of each episode." With three million stills in its database, even Homer should be able to get decent results.

Nintendo: Splatoon saves the day

Nintendo's financial results have been published, and while they're mainly what we expected – the Wii U hasn't suddenly rocketed to the top of the console sales charts – there's some good news among the numbers. With 40.6 million copies sold so far, the superbly entertaining Splatoon has outsold the PS4's Bloodborne and the Order: 1886 combined. As Hugh Langley reports: "Splatoon isn't the only one going strong. Super Mario Maker, which launched in September, has sold 3.34 million copies, while Mario Kart 8 has sold 7.24 million since May 2014. But it's Splatoon that should have Nintendo and its investors celebrating today… That a brand new IP has been so successful less than a year after launching is worth shouting about. The result of this, I hope, is that Nintendo will feel more confident in creating new IPs in the future."

True Detective… Pikachu?

Were you disappointed with season 2 of True Detective? So were we, until we discovered a dark and gritty police procedural in an unexpected place: the Nintendo 3DS. It turns out that Detective Pikachu is pretty dark stuff. Hugh Langley: "…we discover that Pikachu was once happy, munching on apples and bouncing around without a care in the world. Then one day he was in a car accident which killed his owner, leaving the little yellow guy wandering the streets, catcalling at women and yelling at cars… Without a translation we're not sure what he's saying. Something about waiting for a "real rain" to come and wash the scum off the streets, probably."

Week in Tech: Week in Tech: Apple’s doomed, and Twitter too

Week in Tech: Week in Tech: Apple's doomed, and Twitter too

Every morning at the break of day, the Apple doom birds begin to sing their song. "Doom!", they wail. "Doooooooooooom!" We've been ignoring them for years, but eventually, like stopped clocks, they'll be right. Could that be happening right now? Maybe! And Apple isn't the only tech firm with troubles. Flash is finished, Java is a has-bean, and Twitter's going down the… er, toilet. It's Week in Tech!

Apple: from boom! to doom?

Everybody knows what to expect from Apple's financial results: big numbers, and a big increase in iPhone sales. Not this quarter. For the first time, Apple has reported slowing iPhone growth. It's still selling, but its soaraway trajectory appears to be flattening and Tim Cook expects a decline in the next set of results. The doom-mongers are delighted, of course, but as John McCann points out, Apple still has quite a lot of reasons to be cheerful.

And it may have a new one: VR. As Michelle Fitzsimmons reports, Tim Cook said that VR isn't niche and "has interesting applications": she argues that "Apple has built its brand on doing a few products very well, and it would no doubt bring its penchant for premium builds to a VR headset, which, while good for Apple, could be just as good for virtual reality." Here's hoping.

The next iPhone: no big deal?

The mists are clearing around Apple's next iPhone, and it isn't the iPhone 7: it's the iPhone 5SE, which we're expecting to see in March. It's aimed mainly at the emerging markets where Apple doesn't currently do much volume, and it's going to be a four-inch device because people in those markets have really small hands. We made that last bit up, but the four-inch screen appears to be real.

Google: computer says Go

Computers have been able to kick humanity's backside at chess for some years now, but beating us at Go is much, much harder. So the news that Google's AI, AlphaGo, has beaten reigning European Go champion Fan Hui not once but five times leads us to the obvious conclusion: EVERYBODY PANIC! "Where does artificial intelligence go from here?" ponders Parker Wilhelm. "Dungeons and Dragons?"

A great week for gamers

If this week is any indication, it's going to be a great year for gamers: not only have we experienced The Witness, the brand new game from Braid creator Jonathan Blow, but we've also been indulging in all kinds of owl-related tomfoolery in Far Cry: Primal. The former is a beautiful puzzler set in a gorgeous 3D world, and the latter is Far Cry, with owls. Dan Griliopoulos likes it a lot: it takes "the series' overpowered brutality back to something extremely primitive – the days of the caveman, 10,000 years ago."

Spotify: now with pictures

Have you ever listened to Spotify and thought "hey, I wished this had video!"? Spotify hopes so, because it's put a whole load of effort into developing a new video streaming service. It'll come to Android devices first and then roll out to iOS shortly afterwards, but apparently that's it: Spotify has no current plans to bring the service to the desktop. So that's video for when people are on the move, but no video when people are sitting down at a desk. Brilliant! Expect short, shareable clips rather than, say, The Godfather Part III.

It's getting bitter at Twitter

To lose one senior executive is unfortunate; to lose four is a sign that something's up. So what are we to make of the news that four Twitter execs are stepping down, just three months after founder Jack Dorsey came back to save Twitter's soul? James O'Malley explains: "The problem Twitter faces is that it isn't growing fast enough. Facebook, its rival and pacemaker, counts its users in terms of billions. Twitter is languishing around the 300 million mark – and the simple truth is that, month on month, that figure isn't increasing as fast as investors would like." That makes Twitter the social media equivalent of Mad Men to Facebook's X Factor. Can Twitter satisfy investors without scaring off the users that made it what it is today?

Flash! Aah-aaaaagh!

We'll miss Flash, not because it's good but because we like using that headline. But the ageing format is on life support: according to data collected by cloud media processing service Encoding, Flash's share of media is down from 21% to just 6%. "Its days are numbered," says the report. So are Java's: the Java plugin will be killed off in the next iteration of the Java Development Kit, which is currently in beta. Chances are you've already disabled it in your browser, as it's a notorious source of security vulnerabilities.

LG finally fixes its boot loop problem

Do you have an LG G4? Is it stuck in an endless loop of reboots for no good reason? You're not alone, and LG has a solution. The issue is because of a hardware defect, a loose contact between components, and the good news is that a repair is covered by your warranty – or at least, it is if you bought your G4 from a mobile phone carrier. Other customers' warranty conditions "will differ", LG says.

Pokémon Easter eggs: gotta catch 'em all!

"Earlier this week we got a first look at the Pokémon Super Bowl TV spot, which commemorates 20 years of the Pocket Monster franchise," Hugh Langley says. "Having noticed several YouTube commenters highlighting the hidden Easter eggs, we decided to go through and pick out all the ones we could find." Did we catch 'em all? See for yourself.

Week in Tech: Week in Tech: Uber in the sky, Ends Reunited and why your passwords are rubbish

This week the world was filled with wailing, gnashing of teeth and rending of garments as Twitter packed up – but thankfully it got going again before humanity reverted to cannibalism and worshiping false idols, which would have happened after an hour or so. But Twitter had it easy compared to other social media services, one of which shut its doors completely this week. Elsewhere we used Uber to catch a copter, took the brave and potentially foolish step of trying new music apps from Apple, and seriously suggested melting roads and hiring some mimes. It's Week in Tech!

Ends Reunited

Remember Friends Reunited? For many Britons was the first taste of social networking, but now you can forget about it again: after more than 15 years reminding people of how horrible their school peers still are, it's closing its doors. Friends Reunited may have predated Facebook, but Facebook did the social networking thing better and on a much bigger scale. The only surprise about Friends Reunited's demise was that it was still going.

Uber über alles

Hailing an Uber cab is so last year. This year all the cool people will be hailing… helicopters! It's a – yes! – pilot project right now, but Uber really is offering an on-demand service for people who need to hire helicopters, albeit only in and around the Sundance Film Festival in Utah. It's not the only non-car Uber service: in Istanbul, Uber users can hail boats. One thing's for sure: the cost of an Uber copter will make even the most expensive Uber cab seem cheap.

Who's making the next Nexus?

Good news for anybody investing in beleaguered smartphone maker HTC: it looks like HTC will be making the next Nexuses, the replacements for the recently launched Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X. The launch is ages away but details are already beginning to leak, and it's possible that the next Nexuses may take a step backwards in terms of their size: at 5.7 inches the Nexus 6P is a big big phone unless you're a giant or have freakishly large hands. There's still plenty of time for Google to change its mind, but for now it looks like your next Nexus will be an HTC handset, not Huawei as previously rumoured.

Apple updates music apps, not many dead

Apple has made some new music apps – and unlike Apple Music, they're not bottomless pits of suck with user interfaces so unintuitive you'll want to hurl your iPhone against a wall. There's a new app, Music Memos, for easy recording and development of song ideas, and a big update to Garageband that adds the excellent Drummer and a new feature, Live Loops, that makes Garageband a pretty good DJing device too. It's amazing to see what Garageband is capable of on an iPhone, especially if you've been around long enough to remember four-track tape decks.

The best Star Wars game you'll never play

Forget EA's Battlefront: the best Star Wars game of all time may just be one you can't play. A leaked alpha of Star Wars Battlefront 3 shows what Free Radical Design was working on before EA snapped up the rights to the Star Wars brand, and even if you can track it down you won't be able to play it without an Xbox 360 development kit. That's a shame, Hugh Langley says: "Obviously it looks quite dated now and the build is still quite sketchy, but everything we've seen so far points to a more well-rounded game… Battlefront 3 looks like the game that fans have really been clamouring for."

NX Appeal

More rumours about the imminent arrival of the Nintendo NX, the next generation of Nintendo gaming: according to a new survey from one of Nintendo's marketing partners, it'll be capable of playing games at 60fps, offer 900p gameplay, and stream 4K video. Details of what the NX actually is are still rather sketchy, however, and while we know that it's in development there's very little hard information available as Nintendo enforces Apple-style levels of secrecy. You can find everything we do know –and a lot of things the rumour mill is predicting – in our round-up of NX leaks and rumours.

Netflix: no news is good news

We've seen lots of news from Netflix this week but it's unlikely to delight Netflix addicts: if you've been benefiting from "grandfathered" prices, where your sub fees didn't increase for HD because you were already a subscriber, that deal is coming to an end. Not only that, but the long-rumoured war on VPNs has begun: Australian residents are the first group to find themselves banned from Netflix's US service, but they won't be the last.

Today's password is password

It's that time of year again: not the Oscars, but the awards for worst passwords of the year. And the winner for 2015? "123456," followed by "password," "12345678," and "qwerty." Meanwhile some people attempted to be clever, but turned out not to be: as Parker Wilhelm explains, "Other common passwords seem strong at first glance, but are based on simple, easily guessable patterns. '1qaz2wsx' and 'qwertyuiop,' both ranked on the Worst Passwords list, seem hard to guess at first until you realize they are just the first two columns and first row of letters on a standard keyboard, respectively."

What you've gotta do for a free OnePlus 2

If you live in London, OnePlus is so sure that it can deliver your new phone within an hour that if it isn't, your phone is free. And that got us thinking. How hard could it be to ensure the delivery can't make it in time? James Peckham has the answers, and they involve, er, knocking out GPS, hiring mimes and melting the roads. It all makes sense in the article. Honest.
