iOS 7 vs Windows Phone 8 (Video)

Many consider Android and iOS to be the two biggest competitors in the mobile space. And while that’s not technically wrong, there is a lot separating the two platforms. Surprisingly, there’s far less between the global popularity of iOS 7 and Windows Phone. There’s only roughly 10 percent separating them in terms of global market share, whereas Android has nearly a 60 percent lead on iOS. With the new face of iOS and Windows Phone 8 finally ...

Microsoft talks need for focus on low-end phones going forward

With news of Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia’s devices and services divisions, we’ve been thinking a lot about what it all means for the future of Lumia devices. So far, we’ve been pretty concerned with branding – would Microsoft use the Nokia name? What about Lumia, or PureView? While we’re still very much interested in getting to the bottom of those questions, they’re ultimately a bit academic – what really matters, after ...

HTC and Beats divorce: latter buys back remaining 25% stake for $265 million

On August 11, 2011, HTC and Beats by Dr. Dre announced their “more than” partnership to create superior mobile audio experiences for consumers. HTC bought a 50% stake in the company which was later on, in July 2012, diminished to 25% after Beats bought back half of it. On August 19, 2013, we heard rumors that Beats might be considering ...

Nokia Lumia Windows Phones getting hover interaction soon?

Nokia’s Lumia Windows Phones getting hover interaction soon, at least according to a recent report, that is speculating on a couple of patents filed with the European Patent Office. To be more specific, we might be looking at hover-based text and/or object enlargement while reading or UI interaction, as well as handling of text input and icons (where you zoom in on hover and pan upon moving your hand). Nokia is already using hover-interaction on phones running its Lumia Amber package, especially in the Glance Screen, where the device can be woken up from standby to display the time ...

Microsoft cloud-based gaming could bring full-on Halo to your Windows Phone handset

Microsoft sure is sharing a lot of tantalizing news with its employees today. A little earlier, we heard about word that had leaked of a unified Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 app store in the works. Now another leak has stemmed from these internal meetings, revealing some of Microsoft’s efforts in cloud-based gaming. The demonstration the company put up reportedly showed Halo 4 running on a number of Windows family devices, including a Windows Phone handset – not just any phone, either, but a lower-end

Nokia “Glee” could be future Lumia with an emphasis on audio

Another day, another unannounced Nokia model? There may not be quite that many going around, but it sure can feel like it at times. We just saw a render of what’s supposed to be the Lumia 929 a few days ago, and while that some-people-calling-it-the-1820 pic from Tuesday surely isn’t an official render, it very well may represent a real device. Today we get the briefest of hints about another possible model, going by the codename Glee. Tipster powerhouse ...

Nokia exec’s comments raise questions about future of PureView name

Back before the Lumia 1020 launched, remember all the confusion surrounding the Nokia PureView name? From the 808 PureView, we associated it with that 41-megapixel sensor. But then we had the Lumia 920 show up, with an entirely different camera than the 808, yet still rocking that PureView name. What, exactly, did PureView mean anymore? Maybe we’re reading too much into this, but a recent interview with Nokia VP Samuli Hänninen has us wondering if Nokia (or Microsoft, following its ...

Nokia Glance Screen notifications coming with GDR3 and Bittersweet shimmer

Nokia’s own Glance Screen — the setting which allows you to display the time and battery information on your Lumia device in several different modes, introduced with the Lumia 925, available to all with the Amber update — will apparently be further tweaked in the upcoming Bittersweet shimmer software refresh. One of the main complaints with Glance Screen was (and still is) the fact that it will not display notifications; hence, you’ll need to unlock your phone anyways, in case you want to check on anything else but battery and the time. The Bittersweet shimmer ...

Sony Xperia Z1 vs Nokia Lumia 925 (Video)

After comparing the Sony Xperia Z1 with two of the leading Android smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy S 4 and the HTC One, we decided not to neglect the Windows Phone fans out there. Whether they want to switch to the Xperia Z1 from the Lumia 925, or some of you want to decide between getting one of these two devices, this is ...

Nokia could have half a dozen models to announce at October event

Nokia’s been doing its part in drumming up interest for its October 22 Nokia World “Innovation Reinvented” event in Abu Dhabi, and we’ve had a few stabs at guessing just what sort of hardware might make an appearance. The obvious contender has been the 6-inch Lumia 1520 phablet, but there are some other options that could very well decide to show up, too. As we wait to see if Nokia feels like dropping any hints, a new rumor is out this morning claiming that ...

Nokia hypes October Nokia World event

That “Lumia 1820” may just be a pipe dream for now, but Nokia’s got some other hardware that not only seems very much real, but looks nearly ready to launch. Last week, we saw the company start sending out save-the-dates for an October 22 event, where we’d presumably be hearing it announce such hardware. We’ve still got a month to go, but now Nokia’s talking a little more about what it’s got planned, sharing ...

Leaked Nokia Lumia 929 render shows off back of purported device, 20MP camera hinted

Over the weekend we’ve seen a leaked press render allegedly depicting the Nokia Lumia 929, which is expected, as per the report, to land on Verizon’s network soon. Today we’re taking a look at what is claimed to be the back of said device, in its black color flavor. Aside from the Verizon and 4G LTE logos printed on the bottom, there’s nothing really interesting, aside from the 20MP call-out for the camera. It completes the Nokia, PureView, and Zeiss branding, and it seems to confirm ...

Nokia Lumia 929 for Verizon reportedly leaked

Yes, folks, no weekend goes by without a new leak, and Nokia seems to be the target lately. What we see above is reportedly the Nokia Lumia 929, which, according to the leak, will arrive in both white and black on Verizon’s line-up this year. In case you need a reminder, we’ve already seen a Verizon-branded Lumia device from China, and, at that time, we thought it was a Lumia 1520, or a variant of some sort. So, the image above might, or might not, be depicting the same device as the one ...

Pocketnow Weekly 062: iPhone launch day, Xperia Z1, Lumia 1520 & more

It’s iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s launch day, and we can’t think of a better way to commemorate the event than with a Pocketnow Weekly podcast. Actually, yes we can: it would be great to take a look back at Apple’s pre-iPhone days with the spectacular failure that was the Motorola “iTunes phone” of 2005 – fortunately, we already took care of that yesterday. So we’ll discuss the MOTOROKR E1 a little bit on today’s Weekly, before delving in to the ...

Microsoft’s phablet comments stir rumors of WP8/RT blending

Microsoft finds itself in an unusual position in the tablet market. Unlike iOS or Android, where while apps may be optimized for phone or tablet form factors, or even refuse to run on one or the other, a large portion have no problem working on either. For Microsoft, there’s a brick wall around its WP8 devices, another around RT models, and a third around gear running full-blown Windows. We’ve already heard of efforts to streamline development between these disparate sectors, but could some of those walls themselves be coming down? It’s an idea being talked about this ...
