Facebook as a web company is a tired notion at this point as the social network is very much a mobile giant these days, or at least it is in terms of how it makes its money. On the whole the company increased revenue by a massive 49% through its fiscal fourth quarter to $3.58 billion. From that Facebook raked in $701 million in clear net income, with much of the revenue and profit coming from mobile advertising.

Motorola's Moto E is nearing a year old, which of course in the smartphone world means it is due to be refreshed. The affordable but well spec'd handset is still doing well in the entry level market, but Motorola has been known to be working on a replacement for some time. Samsung's drop over 2014 has been well documented, but it is now in black and white and it does not make for pretty reading. Samsung recorded its third straight quarterly decline through Q4, a period that included the roll out of the Galaxy Note 4 and the busy holiday period. The company could not turn around its fortunes and profits have now fallen by 64% over the last three quarters.

In terms of the amount of app downloads, Google Play is well out in front, dominating Apple's App Store by a significant amount. The company has hinted at significant growth through last year before, with impressive quarterly results. Qualcomm, the premier smartphone chip manufacturer, announced its fiscal first quarter 2015 results today. While the company announced a solid period, the outlook is a little modest because the Qualcomm says that its latest high end processor (Snapdragon 810) will not be arriving on one of the top flagships of the year.
