The best Windows tablets: Top tabs and hybrids reviewed

In 2001, when Microsoft unveiled its tablet PC to the world, it was a futuristic, pen-enabled idea contrived to encourage laptop makers to start building touchscreen devices. While the Microsoft Tablet PC wasn’t a remarkable success, it did influence devices down the line, such as the Apple iPad.

It took nine years after that for tablets to take off with general consumers, but once they did, there was no going back. Though most of the Windows tablets could be more suitably classified as 2-in-1 notebooks, the best ones continue to thrive through portability and finesse.

Below you’ll find what, we feel, are the best Windows tablets available right now. Each is unique in build and style, but they all share one common trait - running on Windows 10.

Best Windows tablets

Surface Pro 4

While it may soon be outdone by its successor, plainly called Surface Pro, for now at least the Surface Pro 4 reigns supreme as the all-round best Windows tablet. Albeit for a pretty penny, it's well worth the expense knowing you’ll get a premium build quality, perfect screen and ample power for the price. Microsoft's latest tablet introduces a larger and sharper screen, bettered only by a redesigned keyboard that makes it truly, as Microsoft’s marketing buzz would suggest, the tablet that can replace your laptop.

Samsung Galaxy TabPro S

The Samsung Galaxy TabPro S is a knockout 12-inch tablet that's thinner and better built than most Windows 10 slates. It also offers a uniquely vibrant Super AMOLED screen you won't find on any Windows device either, plus a pair of punchy speakers that actually sound good.

Its keyboard feels a bit lacklustre but if you get over this short coming, it's the perfect Windows 10 tablet to use while streaming media and games.

HP Spectre x2

HP's Spectre x2 bears a striking resemblance to the Surface Pro 4. Take a closer look and you’ll notice that it’s thinner and lighter than Microsoft’s slate. Although the Intel Core M processor might leave you a bit hesitant to adopt the HP Spectre x2, this isn’t the Core m3 we’re talking about. This is a 6th-generation, Skylake Intel Core m7, which bears almost the same performance as the full-blown Core i5 chip harbored by the Surface Pro 4. All the while, it’s cheaper and more power efficient as well.

Best Windows tablets

HP Pavilion x2

Getting into the world of Windows 10 convertibles isn't cheap unless we're talking about the Pavilion x2. This 10-inch hybrid comes packed with a surprising amount of goods even if it’s a short stack. The frugal slate comes equipped with a HD screen and more than enough power to get you through a day of web browsing and basic image editing. And when you’re ready for leisure hour, you can pop off the hood for a sublime tablet experience. Just bear in mind that a lot of retailers are starting to drop the HP Pavilion x2, so if you want one soon, you better act fast.

Lenovo Miix 510

In a sense, the Lenovo Miix 510 is the Surface Pro alternative that you buy when you’re fed up with Microsoft’s reluctance to move forward with its connectivity practices. USB-C is here, and it’s brought the USB 3.0 with it.

While the screen is limited to 1080p, the Lenovo Miix 510 comes with an active stylus, a detachable AccuType keyboard and an articulating kickstand for flexibility without limits. While the battery suffers, the Lenovo Miix 510 is still a surefire win.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 levels up with a 6GB variant

The budget phone segment in India is getting increasingly competitive with every company trying to differentiate itself with hardware rather than software. Aiming to offer the most value for money, Asus is bringing its game to another level with a 6GB RAM and 64GB storage variant of the Zenfone Max Pro M1

The Asus budget phone is a value-for-money device with a hoard of features packed into the device. The most impressive feature is its 5,000mAh battery that delivers on the promise of long battery life thanks to the power efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset.

That being said, it’s not perfect. Despite the phone's dual-camera capabilities, the images aren’t the best. It doesn’t handle exposure well and the color reproduction isn’t as vivid as it should be.

Even so, the only other phone in the same range, the Redmi Note 5 Pro, is more expensive at Rs 16,999. The major difference between the two devices is that one runs on Xiaomi’s MIUI while the other operates on Stock Android, though it’s not a part of the Android One program.

These are the only two phones in India right now to offer 6GB RAM in the Rs 15,000 - Rs 20,000 range.

The phone initially launched in two variants, the 3GB//32GB variant and the 4GB/64GB variants priced at Rs 10,999 and Rs 12,999 respectively. Continuing with their partnership with Flipkart, the newest variant is available on the online platform today.

Nokia 3310 can survive a jolt of one million volts

The Nokia 3310 already has a reputation for being one of the most durable phones ever built. But, did you know that it could survive a million volt shock? A YouTube video by Kreosan English, a channel showcasing experiments in electricity, shows just that.

It plays the Nokia 3310 against a '10-core' smartphone to see who can survive one million volts of electricity.

The smartphone dies out after just one round but Nokia 3310 survives repeated electrocutions.

How does the Nokia 3310 do it?

The science is pretty simple. In the moment when electricity is being pumped through the phones, both their screens exhibit distortion.

The reason the 3310 survives is basically because it doesn't have as many sensors or even a touch screen display. The smartphone, on the hand, has a major dependence on both. So, when the sensor array gets burned out, the smartphone is, more or less, useless.

The simpler, the better, applies perfectly in this situation. The Nokia feature phone's simplicity and scarcity were the primary reasons behind its survival. Then again, how often are you encounter a million volts in real life?

Confirmed: OnePlus is facing trademark issues with the name ‘Dash Charge’

One of the main selling points of OnePlus’ phones is their Dash Charge function but it seems that the company will no longer be selling components under that trademark.

As per a statement issued by the company, their European Union’s (EU) trademark application was rejected earlier this year in March.  Apparently, it's because Bragi and Amazon have similar trademarks in the EU.

Their statement also assures consumers that there are no changes in the technology that goes into making the OnePlus’ charging function efficient. The OnePlus 6 comes with the same charging technology like in previous OnePlus smartphones that were Dash Charge enabled.

"Originally designed by OnePlus and submitted to the USPTO and the EUIPO for trademark application in April 2016, ‘Dash Charge’ was first used in conjunction with the release of the OnePlus 3 in June 2016. We used "Dash Charge” for two years until the EU trademark application was rejected in March 2018. This in no way impacts the functionality of the technology itself. Under existing trademark law, registration is not a necessary prerequisite for commercial use, and OnePlus will continue to work towards securing a trademark for our charging technology. We appreciate everyone's patience in the meantime."

OnePlus Company Spokesperson

The charging capabilities of a phone has transformed into one of the more important features when choosing which smartphone to purchase. Which is precisely what contributed towards the popularity of the OnePlus’ Dash Charge function. It's reportedly the fastest smartphone charging standard in the market right now.

Coolpad files lawsuit against Xiaomi for patent infringement

After noticing intellectual property right violations three months ago, Coolpad notified Xiaomi and since the latter hasn’t yet taken any action, Coolpad has requested that eight Xiaomi devices be recalled from the market. In addition to that, the company also wants compensation for economic losses resulting from patent infringement.

Coolpad filed the lawsuit through Yulong Computer Technology, their subsidiary company, at the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court. One of the patents behind this controversy is related to software, being termed as ‘method for implementing call record interface system of multi-mode mobile communication terminal,’ as per MyDrivers.  Other infringements relate to app icon management, notifications and the system’s user interface (UI).

The devices being called into question are the Mi Mix, Redmi Note 4X, Mi 6, Mi Max 2, Mi Note 3, Redmi Note 5, Redmi 5 Plus, and Mi 5X

If Coolpad wins the lawsuit, not only will Xiaomi have to retract these devices from the market, but also compensate the former for legal fees, notarisation fees, and other fees paid towards stopping the patent infringement.

Coolpad has no plans of easing up on the case and may even be filing new lawsuits against other manufacturers. Jian Chang, the company’s CEO, hinted that various corporations have allegedly infringed upon 10,000 of the company’s patents.

Vivo X21 brings in-display fingerprint scanner to India

It was the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 where Vivo first showcased the in-display fingerprint scanner as the first in the world, and now, they’re bringing that technology to India piggybacking on the Vivo X21.

The phone is already available in China and has two variants, the X21 and X21 UD. After the launch in China, Vivo also brought the X21 UD into a few other South Asian markets. According to a source that spoke to phoneradar, India will be privy to the same variant at a price tag of Rs 34,990.

Though the device being launched is the Vivo X21 UD, it will still be called the X21 locally. There isn’t any information of when the phone will be launched precisely, but reports confirm that will happen by end of May.

Vivo X21 specifications, features

The Vivo X21 features a massive 6.28-inch Super AMOLED screen at a 1080 x 2280 resolution and an aspect ratio of 19:9. It will run on Android 8.1 Oreo with Vivo’s own Funtouch OS 4.0 layered on top, which may not appealing for users who prefer using devices that are a part of the Android One program.

That being said, as per Google I/O developer keynote, the Android P beta will be available for the Vivo X21. Making this the third phone to have the operating system in India aside from the Nokia 7 Plus and the yet to be released, OnePlus 6.

The Vivo X21 UD launched in China had 6GB RAM and 128GB storage coupled with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 660 chipset. It’s expected the same hardware will be on the X21 in India.

The 3200mAh battery should ideally last one day, but only a more in-depth review of the device will offer any insight into real life performance. And, while Vivo’s rear dual camera setup with a 12MP and 5MP lens sounds impressive, in the past, Vivo phones have had underwhelming low light performance.

Despite its price tag, the phone won’t have a USB Type C port but will support fast charging.

Vivo X21 will bring in-display fingerprint scanner to India

Update: Vivo sent out invites today for a launch on 29 May. It's expected that the Vivo X21 will launch then. Considering that there are now three variants of the device, it's uncertain will one exactly will make its way to India.

Oppo sub-brand, Realme 1’s first live image spotted online

The first live image of the latest smartphone by Oppo, the Realme 1 that’s set to launch on 15 May, has been leaked online. Oppo's new sub-brand is set to enter the budget smartphone segment in India and even their name sounds similar to Xiaomi's Redmi series.

91Mobiles happened to get their hands on the photograph and it seems that the phone looks a lot like the Oppo A3, launched in China recently.

The phone features a single rear camera paired with an LED flash, a power button towards the side right and volume keys to the left. The Realme 1 in the picture has the same Black Diamond shade that was launched on limited edition variants of the Oppo F7 earlier this year. Most recently, the same colour is set to grace the Oppo F7 but with a cricketing twist.

The main difference between the Realme 1 body as compared to other Oppo phones is the obvious Realme logo located in the centre. The phone’s live image basically confirms the teaser photos that have already been shared by the company.

Realme 1 specifications

Having been sighted on AnTuTu and Geekbench 4, we know that the Oppo Realme 1 will run on a MediaTek Helio P60 chipset along with 6GB RAM.

Realme 1's score on AnTuTu

That being said, it’s highly likely that the Realme 1 will be a rebranded version of the Oppo A3, so we can expect some of the same specifications to follow. The Oppo A3 has a 6.2-inch screen with Full HD+ resolution and a 19:9 aspect ratio. There’s even a notch on top of the IPS LCD display.

The camera specifications deviate from Oppo’s usual selfie centric approach with a 16MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera. Powered by a 3,400mAh battery, it can be estimated that the phone will probably have adequate battery life.

Realme 1 India launch, price

We already know that the phone will launch on 15 May as per the listing on Amazon India but the phone’s price is yet to be unveiled. Considering that the Oppo sub-brand is being set up to go against brands like Xiaomi and Moto in the budget segment, it’s likely that the Realme 1 will cost somewhere around Rs 15,000.

In comparison, the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 has a price tag of Rs 10,999 and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro starts at Rs 14,999.

Nokia 6 (2018) with 4GB RAM, 64GB storage coming to India on 13 May

It was only last month that the Nokia 6 (2018) was launched in India, following which, HMD Global are keeping their promise of bringing the 4GB RAM and 64GB variant into the Indian smartphone market. It’s officially going to be on sold starting May 13 according to a listing on Amazon India.

Listing on Amazon India

The previously launched model with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage had a price tag of Rs 16,999 from which it can be speculated, that the new model will cost approximately Rs 2,000 more. Though the new Nokia 6 (2018) will be more expensive, cashback offers from Airtel and Kotak Mahindra should help users drive down the expenses.

Offers on buying the new variants of the Nokia 6 (2018)

Should you buy it?

The Nokia 6 (2018) is worth the bargain if durability is your underlying goal. The phone is unique in the sense that it looks very different from the other devices in the market, but that same reason also seems to discourage a few users.

Since Nokia Mobile is a part of the Android One program, the Nokia 6 (2018) has a pure version of Android akin to all the other devices that the company launches. Users usually find that getting faster software and security updates on their phones is a big boon.

That being said, Nokia’s budget smartphone doesn’t have the best camera. And this is the situation with most of the Nokia devices launched this year. The lens is slow to focus and without image stabilisation (IS), there’s a high probability that all low light photos will come out blurry.

The Nokia 6 (2018) is a great buy for people who aren’t looking for the best camera but want an above average user experience. The phone’s battery allows it to run beyond 24-hours and the existence of a 3.5mm headphone jack ensures that users won’t have to make an additional investment in wireless headphones or an adapter to listen to their music.

Amitabh Bachchan shows off black and white variants of One Plus 6

The latest development about the OnePlus 6 comes from Amitabh Bachchan and his twitter account where he posted a few photos of him and OnePlus’ CEO, Pete Lau.

The more intriguing feature is that the black and white variants of the phones are clearly visible in the images, as well as Bachchan’s and Lau’s complimentary fashion choices.

Unfortunately, the tweet was deleted shortly after it went live but BGR caught the exchange via screenshots.

 Source: BGR

Most of the design features of the phone are already out in the open, but the photos serve as confirmation nonetheless. The vertical dual camera setup can be seen as well as the phone’s fingerprint sensor with the company logo below.

What do we know so far?

OnePlus’ new flagship smartphone will be exclusively available on Amazon India after its launch on May 17. There are even going to be pop up events featuring the OnePlus 6 across eight cities on May 21 and 22.

Sure, the new smartphone might be more expensive than its predecessor, but taking the news, rumours and teasers into consideration, the specifications are going to be better as well, enabling features like Super Slo-Mo video recording.

Not to mention that the phone is going have an Avengers themed variant.

Oppo F7’s new Limited Edition Cricket variant will be available starting May 14

The third highest selling Chinese smartphone maker in India, Oppo, will be bringing the Oppo F7 with a cricket-oriented twist to it on May 14 via Flipkart. The Oppo F7 is Oppo’s latest ‘selfie centric’ device that usually comes in Solar Red or Moonlight Silver.

Oppo F7 color variants

The Diamond Black version of the phone is a limited edition device that was launched earlier this year, which has now been re-branded to the Oppo F7 Diamond Black Cricket Limited Edition.

It’s not just about how the phone will look. The more exciting feature is that the smartphone will come with signatures of Oppo’s brand ambassadors, namely, Hardik Pandya, R. Ashwin and Rohit Sharma.

The phone costs Rs 21,990 and the Cricket Limited Edition variants of the Oppo F7 will have a glass body design along with cricket case covers, unlike the usual transparent cover that comes with the conventional Oppo F7.

Oppo F7

To buy, or not to buy? That is the question.

The Oppo F7 is a decent smartphone in its own right but, it only has value for selfie centric users. Because Oppo does what’s its supposed to do, make users look beautiful in every image, from any angle.

The phone performs well, just not spectacularly enough to justify the Rs 21,990 price tag. Nonetheless, the Cricket Limited Edition can be a enticing offering for cricket fans considering that the only major issue with the Oppo F7 is that its battery life falls a little short of 24 hours.

Samsung will announce four new J-series smartphones in May

The battle of Chinese smartphone manufacturers continue with Samsung seemingly gearing up to challenge Xiaomi in the budget smartphone segment with their ‘Infinity Display’ in May. The company will launch four new smartphones as a part of their Galaxy J series.

Samsung’s Galaxy J series targets the millennials, which is why they’ve combined the allure of a bezel-less screen with affordable prices. So far, it has been that the flagship devices like the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S9 featured the Infinity Display, This is will be a first for the company to bring the feature to the budget phones.

The new phones will continue to come under the umbrella of the ‘Make in India’ initiative. They will also carry forward features like the ‘S bike’ mode, Ultra Data Saving (UDS) mode and ‘Turbo Speed’ technology.

It was just last month, in April, that Samsung launched the Galaxy J7 Duo. The dual camera device is priced at Rs 16,990. It has a rear camera has a 13MP lens paired with a 5MP lens. Keeping the price point in mind, the phone is in direct competition with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro.

Samsung was the number one selling brand in India for quite a while. It’s only recently that Xiaomi overtook them in Q4 2017 and held onto that momentum in Q1 2018. The coming months will tell us how this plays out. Both companies have extensive plans for the Indian smartphone market and they’ll just have to battle it out.

Xiaomi Mi 7 leak details new design

It’s not entirely clear whether the Xiaomi Mi 7 will launch on 23 May, let alone come to India, but latest leak concerning Mi 7 cases shows what the phone might look like. First spotted by Gizmochina, the case itself isn’t anything spectacular but it does offer some insight into the Xiaomi flagship device.

Xiaomi Mi 7 phone case (black)

The first thing of significance is the existence of a 3.5mm headphone jack which will be a relief for users who are accustomed to wired headphones. Most premium devices this year seem to shedding the headphone jack to make phones slimmer.

Next to the headphone jack on the bottom, there’s a USB Type-C port assuring faster charging than the conventional Micro-USB 2.0 port. This isn’t entirely surprising since the Mi 7 is a Xiaomi flagship phone and should, ideally, come with top-shelf features.

The bottom of the phone case also reveals the location of the speaker grilles.

Xiaomi Mi 7 phone case (transparent)

The second image of the Mi 7 case shows a gap for the camera along the back big enough to encompass a vertical dual-camera setup. The space for the power button and volume controls is reserved for the right side.

Rumour has it...

Like we mentioned before, the Mi 7 doesn’t have a lot of concrete information to its name but there are plenty of rumours and speculations to give us a decent idea of what the phone might be like.

So far, it is hypothesised that the phone will have the Snapdragon 845 chipset paired with 6GB RAM. Some leaks go so far as to conject that there may even be an 8GB RAM model in the works. It’s likely that the Mi 7 will come in two variants, one with 64GB storage and the other with 128GB ROM.

Like the Mi Mix 2S, the Mi 7 is meant to support Qi wireless charging to help charge its 3350mAh battery.

Arguably, the most significant leak was the video render of the new Xiaomi device by TechConfigurations. It shows the phone’s design in great detail, including the OLED display with a notch, a 20MP selfie camera and a 3D face recognition feature. The more compelling aspect is how the notch can be hidden when watching videos.

All in all, while a lot of people are hoping that the Mi 7 will come to India it seems unlikely considering that they never launched the Mi 6 here after debuting the Mi 5 in 2016.
