Imagination Technologies, which is behind the PowerVR brand of GPUs, may be working on a new series of mobile graphics chips that will be found in the next iPhone.
The Linley Group noted earlier on that the iPhone 7 recycled the PowerVR GT7600 in its design for its A10 Fusion silicon package — the Series7XT processor was previously seen as far back as on the Apple A9. The benchmarks have consistently returned stellar results for pixel pushing, far beyond what many competitors have been able to achieve at full-blast. But the GT6700 can overheat the iPhone with prolonged chugging and do a number on the device’s battery.
That’s where the Series8XT comes into play for the iPhone 8. Analysts say that it will get more horsepower while cutting down power consumption. Imagination states that 8XT will accommodate more features and functions than prior products have. A product lineup is expected at the Game Developers Conference in late February.
Imagination Technologies has been the subject of rumors over its relationship with Apple and whether Infinite Loop would buy it out. PowerVR designs have been in every iPhone and the Series7XT chips are in the current batch of the top-end Helio processors from MediaTek — fending off competition from ARM’s base design and Qualcomm’s native Adreno GPU.
