Apple used to refuse to service devices with displays put in by a non-authorized party. But as it strives to grow service revenue, this move was needed.

Hardware fault in iPhone 7 Plus cameras leads to replacements

It turns out that the Google Pixel isn’t the only major flagship with camera issues. Apple is dealing with its own, too. And the only way to fix it is to get rid of the phone.

The dual-camera iPhone 7 Plus, specifically. Some Redditors are reporting that opening up the camera app brings up nothing, or if anything, purple or green or an “emergency” prompt that shuts the iPhone off for being too warm — even though it has not gone through a major change in temperature.

Those who took it up with the Genius Bar at the Apple Store have been told that this problem lies with hardware, but those who have the issue may warrant a replacement iPhone 7 Plus — an inconvenience but a way out, so there you go.

One likely explanation we saw from /u/eyesee is that a flex connector inside the device that handles data and thermal register lines may have been frayed in each case. But there has been no official explanation.

AirPod battery replacements are free from Apple in-warranty or with AppleCare

You know what the most annoying thing about wireless earbuds are? You’ve got an extra pair of batteries to worry about and a charging case and, well, that’s fun and all, but seriously? Our outlets are already maxed out.

Well, at least once the batteries inside the Apple AirPods run through their service life, you won’t have to pay terribly much to get them replaced. At least, if they’re in warranty or under AppleCare — it’s free in those cases. Don’t have either? It’s $49. You might also need $6.95 in shipping fees.

The information, oddly, is found under the iPhone repair service listings, so keep that in mind if you’re making an online request. Call in if you’re unsure.

No shipments for Pebble Time 2, Core, Time Round with Fitbit acquisition

Health tracking tech company Fitbit has purchased smartwatch company Pebble.

That leaves the latter gutted of its staff and intangibles while those who have backed the Pebble Time 2 smartwatch are being left with refunds. Pebble Core and Pebble Time Round backers will also receive their money back instead of units. Imbursements should come starting December 16 and the process may take until March 2017 to complete.

The company has announced that all of the Pebble 2 Kickstarter perks have been fulfilled and no further Pebble 2 purchases will be fulfilled. Refunds requested from Pebble.com before December 7 will be given out. Pebble purchases from retail are subject to each store’s particular return policy. Warranties have been invalidated.

If you own a Pebble device, the software and/or service functionality of it may be reduced in the future. However, they will operate as they have been for now.

The startup has ended all of its business operations and is in the process of winding down and fulfilling refunds. More details on peripherals and currency exchanges may be found on the Pebble 2/Time 2/Core’s Kickstarter page and on Pebble’s blog post.

Protect your Swappa-purchased used phone starting at just $50 for one year

The ultimate “marketplace for gently used mobile tech” wants to offer you some peace of mind this holiday season… and well beyond. If you decide to skip the free new high-end phone Black Friday frenzy (with strings attached) from so many carriers and retailers, or perhaps snub the year’s biggest shopping days altogether, there’s now one extra reason to go the pre-owned route.

Not only is rising e-commerce star Swappa way more focused on combating fraudulent transactions than industry veterans eBay or Craigslist, but buyers of used gear through this particular website can sign up to simple, straightforward and fairly exhaustive phone protection plans starting at just $50.

WarrantyLife will cover anything from screen repairs to water damage, power surge protection and even mechanical failure after 90 days for a full year, with a reasonable $50 deductible. Swappa’s top protection plan costs $70 for up to $1000 value, $60 for up to $500, while 50 bucks merely gets you up to $300 coverage.

You have to take into account however that an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ is as cheap as $395 on Swappa, and a standard Galaxy S6 sets you back $220 and up, so the lower two tiers of the extended warranty program should do in nine cases out of ten. Just don’t forget to check the right box when purchasing your “gently used” device, as that’s the lone chance you’ll get to score protection.

Nexus 5X warrantied repairs end in total refund from LG

The legacy of the Nexus 5X may end in a full refund for some of its customers and it all could stem from an unfulfilled warranty.

Several Redditors on a thread for the device posted emails from LG Electronics claiming after a duration from when they sent in their Nexus 5X to repair an issue — in the original poster’s case, it was a bootloop problem — that the company cannot warranty the product. No, not because it’s out of warranty, but because it lacks the parts to support the repair.

“We have received your device at our repair facility but currently a part to complete the repair is out of stock and is no longer available,” reads part of the email LG sent to customers.

With parts bins running empty after more than a year’s worth of service duty, LG has decided to offer full refunds to customers based on the invoice they logged at purchase. The chaebol stressed that refunds would take around four weeks to complete with holidays business expected to keep things tied down.

For a few of those affected by this repair-and-refund scheme subscribed to Google’s Project Fi MVNO service, the 5X remains one of the most affordable phones to use it on, no matter where they got it. But one user, who’s now run off of the LG brand, is now stuck in a tough position in order to continue using Project Fi properly.

“[My] choices are either the Nexus 6P or the Pixel,” said ericcwu. “The 6P is too big for my girlfriend to comfortably use and the Pixel costs too much.”

Several reports of LG V20 camera glass cracking come awfully timed for industry

A post on the LG V20 subreddit has logged seven incidents including an ...

How important is the warranty when you purchase a smartphone?

Warranties fall into that category of “things you don’t think about until you need it”. At the end of the day, it’s nice that if your phone stops working in a short period of time, you can contact the company who made the phone and get some kind of satisfaction – most of the time. But every now and then, those warranties turn out not so great. Maybe there is an issue with your phone that isn’t covered or maybe the factory is swinging and missing on basic warranty service. Either way, suddenly that assurance isn’t so reliable. Then, there’s the other side of the coin – ...

Have you ever had to take advantage of a smartphone warranty?
