Here’s our wishlist for the Galaxy Note 5

It’s getting to be that time of year again. As IFA 2015 edges just mere months away, and the rumor machine keeps churning out new evidence of a Galaxy Note 5, we’re starting to get antsy over what Samsung’s next phablet might hold in store. Of course, it’s all anyone’s guess at this point, but the Pocketnow team has quite a lot on its Galaxy Note 5 wishlist.Adam DoudTake a look at my

LG and HTC had better hope this BlackBerry Android phone is fake

If you pit three struggling companies against each other, what happens next? In an ideal world for the smartphone enthusiast that wants to see everybody succeed … well, they do. But in reality, things aren’t that simple, and the smartphone market becomes an every-man-for-himself race to see who can innovate faster. Who can pack more features. Who can market their products best. That’s all easy when you’re a giant corporation like Apple or Samsung, with billions of dollars to throw ...

We’ve seen devices improve across the board at all different price points, from the affordable to the high-dollar. It’s getting harder and harder to buy a *bad* phone these days, as the market grows more mature and full of great options all around. BlackBerry going all-in on Android could save its phone business

BlackBerry isn’t a name you hear mentioned in the mobile space anymore. It’s strange, since they used to be one of the biggest names in the smartphone industry, but like Kodak’s reign over photography, stagnancy deprecates relevance, and BlackBerry quickly fell by the wayside with the rise in popularity of the iPhone and similar products. Sure, they’ve picked back up a bit with

Is the myth of cloud-everything the reason we still have 16 GB phones?

Running low on storage sucks. As I’m sitting typing this, I’m deleting files off of the external drive I store video on so I have room for new clips in the future, because I’m nearly out of storage. Nobody likes seeing the “low storage” warning on their devices, and it’s even more frustrating when it happens on your smartphone, since there’s already so little room on there to begin with. At least I had a whole terabyte to go through before almost filling my external hard drive. On my phone, there’s only 32 GB to begin with, not even ...

Pebble Time: a day in real life with the smartwatch (Video)

The Pebble Time is one of the hottest new smartwatches to hit the market, and though we’ve already reviewed it and compared it to Android Wear, reviews only get you so far. Sometimes using a product as a normal consumer goes beyond what specs it has or how it holds up against similar products. There are small things that we don’t mention in our reviews, like the strong vibration feedback from the Pebble ...

Pebble Time vs. Android Wear (Video)

Pebble has sort of been the father of all smartwatches. The origin. It was the first of its kind … but certainly not the last. Over the past year, give or take, we’ve watched the rapid growth of a new wearable platform, Google’s Android Wear, and with its rising popularity, the Pebble has begun to feel … dated. But now Pebble has released a new watch, the Pebble Time, and with it came a new interface — what the company is calling Timeline UI. It’s a nice refresh to the tired monochromatism of Pebble past, but Google also recently released an update to Android Wear, version ...

Top 3 features of Apple Music (Video)

These days, just like with smartphones, new music streaming services have to do something different to be able to compete. It’s not just about being able to listen to your music anymore; people look to apps like Spotify, Google Play Music, and Rdio for sharing their favorite songs, listening to radio stations, and much, much more. Personally, I wouldn’t be able to see myself paying for a service that doesn’t allow for offline playback and link sharing. One of Apple’s biggest advantages right from the start is its massive music library, but what other features of ...

Apple Music hands on (Video)

If you’ve used music streaming service, you’ve used them all. Spotify, Rdio, Pandora, and other services all have roughly the same feature set, and focus around letting you access a huge library of music from anywhere, any time. Apple has historically been reluctant to embrace music streaming, instead pushing iTunes and the benefits of owning your tracks. But as of today, that all changes, as Apple has just released Apple Music to the masses, bundled into iOS version 8.4.Like competing services, Apple Music allows for radio streaming, playlists, sharing songs, and more, but the ...

How Does Hound Stack Up To The Rest? (Video)

Hound is SoundHound’s new voice assistant to compete with the likes of Google Now, Siri, and Cortana. It, like the others, can launch apps, run search queries, identify songs, and more, but one thing that’s caught wide attention for this service is its ability to process complex, multi-part queries in a manner similar to Wolfram Alpha. Questions like “What is the population and capital for Japan and China?” work without a hitch, and very quickly at that. But rarely will most people ask a voice assistant such complicated questions. Instead, most people use these ...

I’m cautiously optimistic about the return of Nokia-designed phones

If you’ve been yearning for Nokia hardware since its Microsoft acquisition, then you might finally be in luck — at least, sort of. The company’s CEO Rajeev Suri recently commented on the possibility of reentering the phone space. To simplify a complicated response, Nokia has interest in designing phones to then license to other companies, similar to what happened with its N1 tablet. In other words, while they may ot be ...

OnePlus needs to tread carefully with pricing or defeat half the point of its phone

For being the first product coming from a small startup company with a vague history and questionable PR stunts, the One from OnePlus sold like crazy when it was made available last year. In the end, it turned out to be quite a good phone, but even before anyone knew how it performed, there were two main selling points that largely drove the OnePlus One to its viral success: its price and its specs. The market has grown ...

Installing Google Play Services on the One M9+ (Video)

The One M9+ is one of HTC’s latest and greatest smartphones — so much so, in fact, that it’s led the company to receive quite a lot of flack for not shipping it as its main flagship for 2015. But if you went to the trouble of importing an M9+ of your own, particularly one from China, you might have trouble downloading the familiar Android apps you’re used to, thanks to a lack of Google Play Services. Even if you manage to sideload the apk files from elsewhere, many of them still ...

Android Wear 5.1.1 on the Moto 360

We first saw Android Wear version 5.1.1 on the LG Watch Urbane, and since then it’s rolled out to most other Android-powered smartwatches. The Moto 360 has been a bit slow to receive updates, and 5.1.1 was no exception, but it’s in our hands now and we wanted to run you through some of the new features that the software update has brought.Android Wear 5.1.1 on the Moto 360 introduces wrist gestures to ...

Hound First Impressions: Google Now Competitor? (Video)

Nearly every member of the Pocketnow team uses digital personal assistants in some way. Whether it’s Google Now, Siri, or Cortana, these systems offer voice commands, as well as personalized recommendations based on contextual information like location or emails. But while each service has its own unique features that set it apart from the others, none of them offer the same kind of fully fledged, natural language-based voice interface found on services like Wolfram Alpha.SoundHound recently demoed a new product, simply called Hound, that seems to offer similar functionality to ...
