Fitbit may only be interested in Pebble’s software, Time 2 and Core nearing cancellation [Update: confirmed]

Update: The “leader in the connected health and fitness market” has just announced it’s indeed acquiring “specific assets of Pebble.” Namely, “key personnel and intellectual property related to software and firmware development.” Nothing hardware-related, as expected.

Interestingly enough, it seems the transaction was already completed yesterday, December 6, though all the financial details remain under wraps. Fitbit is looking to build on its strengths and extend its leadership position in the wearables category after the purchase, but it’s unclear if the Pebble device brand as a whole and the Time 2 and Core in particular are dead and buried now.

Our original story is below.

Pebble’s creative and commercial struggles have been obvious since last year’s introduction of the Time family, its money problems deepened early this year, and unfortunately for the smartwatch pioneer, your nearly $13 million pledged in total on Kickstarter for three new wearable products couldn’t prevent a forced bargain sale to Fitbit.

While not yet confirmed, the deal will almost certainly be announced soon, and unless Pebble can find another miraculous survival solution, it should also close relatively quickly. Fresh inside information suggests software “assets” are at the core of the corporate takeover, with hardware development likely to come to an end.

Not only are future Pebble devices improbable, but the Kickstarter-funded Time 2 and Core may never see daylight either, with supporters of course due full refunds. The Pebble 2 has already started shipping, though its own cancellation is also still possible, with no further units heading out for early adopters.

Existing product inventory and server equipment might be sold off separately if Fitbit shows no last-minute interest, the “less than $40 million” currently set aside for the acquisition merely covering the Pebble watch’s operating system, apps and cloud services. No debt or other “obligations” either.

The global wearable market leader is rumored to be going after smartwatch king Apple more aggressively with this purchase. To achieve its increasingly ambitious goals, the San Francisco-based fitness tech specialist may also take on the bulk of Pebble’s software engineers, “very few” interface designers, but no hardware employees whatsoever.

Pebble 2 goes up for pre-orders, $100 Pebble 2 SE slated for November launch

The apparent rut of new and old Apple Watches, Samsung’s ominous silence on the Gear S3 commercial rollout front, and especially Android Wear’s inexplicable lethargy might create the ideal circumstances for a spectacular Pebble comeback that

Two new Pebble Time Round finishes are available on Kickstarter in gold or silver

While Pebble detractors have been led to reconsider their stance on the smartwatch pioneer’s future following the Kickstarter debut of the affordable, heart rate-enabled Pebble 2 and Time 2, as well as the 3G-integrating Core, devoted fans probably feel there’s something missing.Specifically, a sequel for the

Pebble launches Happiness app, opens activity tracking algorithms to the public

There’s obviously a very close connection between one’s physical health and emotional stability, and while wearable and wellness pioneer Pebble doesn’t intend to read a user’s mind… yet, it wants you to better understand how “different environments and events impact your mood.”It’s not going to be easy, and it might get a little annoying, but if you install the aptly titled Happiness app on the Time, Time Steel, or Time Round smartwatch, and answer a few simple questions every hour for a full week, you’ll receive an email report containing “deeper insights” into your ...

Pebble just might get it after all

Several days ago I stepped into the Pocketnow family with a heartfelt piece on Pebble and how I thought that their future might be a little murky. Despite my intense love for the simplistic wearables that arguably kicked off the trend, I truly feared that the “big dogs” in the industry would end up forcing this scrappy underdog out on their keasters. With the recent news of the Pebble 2, Pebble Time 2, and the Pebble Core hitting the interwebs, I gotta say ...

Pebble launches ‘best Kickstarter yet’ for two new smartwatches and a 3G ‘ultra-wearable’

While we’re certainly a little disappointed to see Pebble once again ask its fans for financial support before commercially launching a new product (or three), the advancements of the Pebble 2 and Time 2 smartwatches guarantee them a spot in the same league as most Android Wear heavyweights, making everything else feel irrelevant. Both the Pebble Time 2 and Pebble 2 feature 24/7 heart rate monitors, built-in microphones, activity and sleep tracking, water resistance up to 30 meters, and ...

Pebble: First to the race and last across the finish line?

I’d like to start this out by stating clearly that I am a diehard Pebble fan of epic proportions. No, I did not fund their original Kickstarter campaign BUT I was one of the first in line to purchase one from the store. Well to be fair, it was my wife that was first in line to buy one for me as an early Christmas present that year as I hadn’t shut up about wanting one for months. From that point forward ...

Pebble shares new, lower smartwatch prices – and they’re retroactive

Today’s wearable market is a pretty darn competitive one, and it’s not surprising to see manufacturers get very aggressive with smartwatch pricing. Pebble Time lineup now enabled for voice and text replies on AT&T iPhones

The built-in microphone of the Pebble Time, Time Steel, and Time Round smartwatches has been one of the trio’s most underused features since day one, especially when paired with iPhones.
