From Ingress addiction to Pokemon Go overdose

Pokemon Go no longer needs an introduction at this point. This simple mobile game is now a phenomenon that’s taken the world by storm. I’m fairly certain that nobody could have foreseen just how huge this thing would be. I know I didn’t expect such an intense adoption rate. This will go down as one of those historic things that has captured the minds of so many people like Tamagotchi or Beanie Babies. It’s rare to see something of this magnitude and ...

Would a Google built phone really be a bad thing?

The interwebs lit up yesterday with the rumors of a non-Nexus Google built phone due to an article from The Telegraph. Now let’s start this off by saying this entire rumor should be taken about as serious as fables of rainbow crapping unicorns. There are so many reasons why, aside from Project Ara, we ...

Running your office life from your smartphone

I’m in no way shape or form what one would consider to be an office worker, desk jockey, pencil pusher, etc… I’m a railroad mechanic by trade. Aside from ordering the necessary parts to complete my job or to complete the appropriate work orders to receive pay I have very little use for a computer day to day at work. If it can’t be beat with a sledgehammer, cut with an oxygen/acetylene torch, welded, or taken apart with a wrench I have no use for it in my professional life. Probably the most tech friendly thing I use in my job is using my phone to stream music via Google Play all ...

5G service sounds amazing but is it necessary?

Sprint has been making a lot of headlines lately after they showed off their 5G chops with a demo at the Copa América Centenario soccer (or football for our non-U.S. readers) tournament. Rocking out download speeds up to a whopping 2Gbps with a super low latency, it was indeed an impressive feat to say the least. They showed it off streaming 4k video as well as streaming some VR goodness courtesy of VideoStitch and as far as we can tell it all went off there without a hitch cruising along on the 73GHz ...

Life on Android without the app drawer and widgets

During a recent conversation with my friend (and soon to be fellow contributor to the Pocket Now family) Clifton Thomas, we debated the need for widgets and the app drawer within Android. Clifton has recently purchased the Nextbit Robin and despite rockin’ a close to bone stock version of Android it lacks an app drawer and widgets are handled via a separate layer that’s accessed via a pinch on one of the home-screens. Therefore, the Robin’s approach to Android is rather iOS-like in execution in that you are ...

Pebble just might get it after all

Several days ago I stepped into the Pocketnow family with a heartfelt piece on Pebble and how I thought that their future might be a little murky. Despite my intense love for the simplistic wearables that arguably kicked off the trend, I truly feared that the “big dogs” in the industry would end up forcing this scrappy underdog out on their keasters. With the recent news of the Pebble 2, Pebble Time 2, and the Pebble Core hitting the interwebs, I gotta say ...

Google Duo five years too late?

Flashback to June 7, 2010 for a moment. It may take a little thought to do so as it was damn near six years ago. You may not remember what the weather was like, what you wore that day, or even what devices you owned at that moment in your life. If you are a diehard techie I will tell you one thing you will remember from that day and that would be that year’s WWDC. The late and great Steve Jobs walked out on stage and unveiled the iPhone 4 in all of it’s gorgeous glory. The phone was amazingly sexy for its time and would come with one particular feature that is a staple point of the iOS ...

Does Google Assistant stand a chance against Siri, Cortana, and the rest?

The title says it all folks and honestly I find it to be a rather absurd question. That’s right, I called my own headline absurd! Of course the new Google Assistant announced at this year’s Google I/O can go head to head with the rest of the competition and in my opinion can best all of them. It would be easy to dismiss this as a simple upgrade to their ever popular Google Now that has been the lynchpin of the Android experience for some three ...

Pebble: First to the race and last across the finish line?

I’d like to start this out by stating clearly that I am a diehard Pebble fan of epic proportions. No, I did not fund their original Kickstarter campaign BUT I was one of the first in line to purchase one from the store. Well to be fair, it was my wife that was first in line to buy one for me as an early Christmas present that year as I hadn’t shut up about wanting one for months. From that point forward ...
