Barnes & Noble now faces criticism for baking Adups spyware into $50 Nook Tablet 7

You didn’t really think Miami-based BLU Products was the only Android device manufacturer that unwillingly put its users’ personal data at risk by loading cheap phones up with a malicious third-party Chinese app, now, did you?

In fact, recent research estimated the number of gadgets pre-installed with Adups firmware at around 700 million, allowing the shady “leading global FOTA provider of end-to-end device management and software solutions” to potentially monitor text messages, phone call histories, and details of how all these phones are used without their owners’ permission.

Among those controversially choosing to collaborate with Adups, we found important OEM names like Lenovo and ZTE in addition to BLU, while Barnes & Noble reportedly joins the list after the holiday launch of the ultra-low-cost Nook Tablet 7.

For just $50, it seems you’re not only getting a compact “reading-optimized” IPS display, full Play Store access, skinned Marshmallow, exclusive B&N content, up to 7-hour battery life, and 8GB expandable storage, but also complimentary spyware.

At least in theory therefore, everything from call logs to contacts and even your IMEI number are in danger of falling into the wrong hands, although we have to underline the low-end slate doesn’t support cellular services. Still, Barnes & Noble should take care of this security hazard in a similarly expeditious way as BLU so as to nip unnecessary scandals in the bud.

BLU Life Max squeezes ‘monster’ battery, fingerprint reader and 2GB RAM into sub-$120 package

With its reputation (partly) restored after a damning spyware scandal, Miami-based smartphone vendor BLU is quickly back doing what it does best, following up the Amazon.com re-release of the wildly popular $50 R1 HD with the commercial US debut of a slightly pricier Life Max 5.5-incher.

This “gorgeous” metal-finished mid-ranger stands out first and foremost courtesy of a secure and convenient fingerprint sensor and “monster” 3700mAh battery, which are fairly rare feats for the sub-$150 Android market segment.

The factory unlocked BLU Life Max actually sets you back a crazy low $118.87 on Amazon, though if you order it now, you may still have to wait a little while to get it delivered, as it’s apparently “temporarily out of stock.”

That relatively large IPS screen sadly sports mediocre HD (1,280 x 720 pixels) resolution, which on the bright side is one of the reasons BLU Products speaks very highly of Life Max’s battery life, estimated at “up to 3 days with standard usage.”

Other decent features (all things considered) include premium curved glass design elements, a 64-bit quad-core MediaTek processor, 2GB RAM, 8MP autofocus main camera, 5MP front snapper with flash, pre-installed Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and 4G LTE compatibility nationwide on GSM networks like AT&T and T-Mobile. Now, if only you’d be able to buy this super-affordable BLU Life Max in time for Christmas.

$50 and up BLU R1 HD is back in stock on Amazon, spyware no longer included

Miami-based smartphone manufacturer/Chinese hardware repackager BLU is looking to bounce back from damning data-mining scandals as soon as possible, avoiding any further association with Google-unrelated software companies and quickly convincing Amazon to take the R1 HD back.

That’s no wonder, given the early rampant success of the ultra-low-cost 5-incher through America’s most popular e-commerce platform. Believe it or not, the BLU R1 HD has already returned to first place in Amazon.com’s ranking of best-selling unlocked cell phones, after several weeks of absence caused by excessive demand and OS tweaking.

Sheltered from prying eyes and hopefully cleared of all dubious third-party apps and services, the BLU R1 HD is best served with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage space, either at $60 as a Prime exclusive with offers and ads, or $110 in a Standard configuration, no restrictions, strings attached or subscriptions needed.

But if you want to spend even less, a humbler-than-humble 1/8GB edition goes for $50 and $100 respectively for Prime members and everyone else. Unavailable throughout the extended Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopping season, the four BLU R1 HD models can now ship before Christmas, Android Marshmallow, quad-core processing power, 720p screen resolution, 4G LTE connectivity, GSM support, 8 and 5MP cameras included.

BLU accuses Shanghai Adups of request violation, migrating updates to Google’s systems

BLU claims that the Chinese company it had contracted with for firmware updates to its phones disregarded a request to not mine its users’ data.

The Miami-based smartphone seller told PCMag that Shanghai Adups went rogue by installing software that sent full content data from texts, call histories and contact lists to servers in China.

“We have an email history with Adups saying we did not want that functionality on our devices, and they violated our request,” said BLU CEO Sammy Ohev-Zion.

The phonemaker has updated the software on phones with Adups’s firmware on them to block data from being sent to the overseas servers. Security firm Kryptowire has agreed to keep tabs on the software on BLU’s phones for a year.

New Android phones will have Google over-the-air firmware solution installed — this may also include new shipments of the R1 HD, one of the original phones thumbed for the Chinese firmware. The company will also update its privacy policy to include information about what data its firmware will receive.

“[BLU will] not install third-party applications where we don’t have the source code and don’t understand the behavior,” Ohev-Zion said. “Today, no BLU phone has this problem.”

The company has also gone to the lengths of joining a “fastpass” program in association with MediaTek to get its phones loaded with a clean Android UI and updated more frequently. Expect some of those phones out in January.

BLU VIVO 6 launches pre-orders in UK for £185

BLU has decided it fit to spoil Black Friday shoppers in the UK, already spoiled by Amazon’s weeks-long sales event, with a new phone. Unfortunately, customers eager to buy a phone from a manufacturer with a sketchy software track record, — benign in many ways, insecure in others — will have to wait well past Cyber Monday to claim dibs on this phone.

Pre-orders are up on Amazon.co.uk for the BLU VIVO 6, a phone that takes things up and away from the VIVO 5R with an improved processor (the octa-core MediaTek Helio P10) with 4GB of RAM to back it up, a 5.5-inch full HD display, a 13-megapixel Sony IMX258 main camera. With Android Marshmallow, a front-facing fingerprint sensor, a 3,130mAh battery and 64GB of storage (with microSD expandability up to another 64GB), this all totals a very slight £184.99. It even comes with free delivery, too!

But you better make your choice of gold, grey or rose gold by December 2nd to lock in this price. Sorry, US mates, nothing on this for you, yet.

The BLU Vivo 5R review – Low-end is the new midrange

In the year of the midrange phone, we have seen exceptional hardware come out at unbelievable prices. What has largely gone overlooked is what phones on the low end are looking like. With quality reaching new heights in the midrange department, it’s easy to overlook phones that are actually cheaper, but frankly not as good. But one side effect of the midrange phenomenon is that the low end has stepped up pretty well itself. This is the case for the BLU Vivo 5r. Priced at just $200 unlocked, how does this phone stand up on the daily?HardwareThe Hardware on the Vivo 5R is what we’ve come ...

Blu Pure XR Review: Exploring 3D touch on Android

One of the fiercest competitors in the midrange space has to be Blu. This plucky little OEM out of Miami is chalk full of surf, sun, fun, and decent phones. The latest to hit the sandy shores is the Blu Pure XR. We have been testing this phone in the Chicago area on AT&T’s network for ten days, and here is what we found out.HardwareThe theme of the Blu Pure XR’s hardware is “Sensitivity”, and not in the “long walks on the beach” kind of way. We’ll get to that aspect in a moment, but first, of course you want the juicy stuff. What’s under the hood? Starting off we have a ...
