Long-overdue Microsoft Edge browser extension support could be about to hit Insiders

Microsoft made a lot of big promises when it introduced Windows 10 last year, but its ability to follow through on them all has proved to be a bit of a mixed bag. Just last month, for instance, we received confirmation that the planned Project Astoria Android app support was dead – though the Windows Bridge for iOS would live on. Another bumpy spot for Windows 10 has emerged courtesy of the platform’s new Edge browser, and specifically its extension support. The extension framework (including ...

What is 5G and why should you care?

There are three major components to evaluate whenever you talk about network speed: latency, download speed, and upload speed. For most of us, that translates into “how fast does it load” when talking about web pages or other content, or “how high is the resolution” when streaming video. We’ve already gone through quite a few iterations of wireless systems, “5G” is arguably the fifth generation of mobile networks and is the “the next major phase of mobile telecommunications standards beyond the current 4G/IMT-Advanced standards”.The ...

Pocketnow Weekly 056: two hours of your tech questions, answered

Sometimes, you push obligations back for too long and they just pile up, week after week after week, until they never get done. Well, when we started the Pocketnow Weekly technology podcast just over one year ago, we decided that listener mail -your mail- was going to be a big part of it, and it’s consistently added flavor to the show. But the last few weeks have been so packed

Ubuntu Edge campaign cuts prices, but is it too little, too late?

Last month, we heard about Canonical’s fantastically ambitious plan to crowdsource the funding of a seriously high-end smartphone, the Ubuntu Edge. The Edge would boast specs like 4GB of RAM and 128GB of flash, while being capable of dual-booting into either Ubuntu for phones or regular old Android. The plan’s goal is to raise $32 million over the course of a month, but halfway through, Canonical has yet to even hit the $10 million mark. Today, Canonical instituted a major price break on the Edge, but will it be enough ...

Why I’m getting the Ubuntu Edge

On Monday, Canonical did something special: it kicked-off the fundraising campaign for the Ubuntu Edge, not only endeavoring to break some crowdfunding records, but to change the nature of the relationship between manufacturer and smartphone user in the process. It’s all wildly ambitious. I have serious concerns about Canonical’s ability to pull this off, and we’re talking about a serious amount of money to ask people to hand over with plans for availability still so far away. At first, I was content to just sit ...

Ubuntu Edge campaign to fund development of very high-end dual-boot Android phone

Ubuntu has positioned itself to be one of this year’s many smartphone platform upstarts – the littler guys who are trying to elbow their way into an already incredibly competitive market. We were able to give Ubuntu a lot of hands-on time earlier this year when those preview builds arrived for Nexus-series devices, but news on the platform has been relatively quiet ever since. Today, we finally hit a big Ubuntu milestone, with Canonical starting a major fundraiser ...

Huawei to Get Competitive With Aluminum Unibody 1080p Android?

Last month, we heard some rumors about a pretty compelling Android from Huawei, featuring a 4.9-inch 1080p display and measuring just 6.3 millimeters thick. We didn’t have a name at the time, but were told that Huawei might be ready to announce the phone as soon as this month. Well, that still hasn’t happened yet, but now some new rumors have us wondering if there could be a lot more to that phone’s story. Supposedly, Huawei is working on a stylish aluminum unibody phone, in the spirit of the HTC One. ...
