Android 7.1.1-based OxygenOS 4.1 begins incremental rollout for OnePlus 3 and 3T

You can now add the original OnePlus 3 and refreshed OP3T to an annoyingly short list of non-Google phones running Android 7.1.1 Nougat.

Cryptic Evan Blass tweet may hint at OnePlus 4 (5?) arrival, or perhaps a black 3T

OnePlus definitely has something cooking, but could it be an entirely new flagship phone or just a darker, handsomer color for the existing 3T?

OnePlus 3 Nougat beta updated, no official pushes for both 3 and 3T

The OnePlus 3 and 3T both got software updates yesterday, but with only two weeks left in 2016, users are biting their fingernails just a little bit right now.

The OxygenOS 3.5.4 update is hitting the OnePlus 3T with some improvements to T-Mobile reception, battery-saving optimizations, Bluetooth connectivity for Mazda cars and other bugfixes and improvements. The update is being sent over the air.

The Open Beta 9 for the OnePlus 3’s Android Nougat software package is also out and it includes expanded screenshots and optimizations to DPI, interface and battery performance along with other general tweaks. You can download the update at the OnePlus forum page.

The company promised Android Nougat builds for both of this year’s devices by the end of the year and so far, it has not modified that promise.

OnePlus 3T formally launches in India at Rs. 30,000 and up exclusive to Amazon

Unfazed by touch latency controversies that were probably blown out of proportion anyway, as well as long waiting times on both US shores and across the old continent, OnePlus today brings its latest “never-settling” venture to the all-important Indian market.

Well, technically, the incrementally-updated OnePlus 3T is still a couple of weeks away from its local commercial launch. But Amazon registrations are now open, pricing is confirmed, and Prime members will get an hour of “early access” sales on December 12 ahead of the wide rollout two days later.

Like everywhere else, the 3T is only slightly costlier than the original OP3 in India, starting at Rs. 29,999 (around $440), compared to 28,000 rupees ($410). That’s obviously for the “entry-level” 64GB configuration, with the 128 gig SKU commanding an Rs. 5,000 ($73) premium for a grand total of 35,000 rupees, or roughly $510.

Remember, just the 64GB variant is inbound with both gunmetal and soft gold paint jobs… eventually, while the top-line OnePlus 3T model comes coated in gunmetal alone.

Visually similar to its predecessor, the Android Marshmallow-based OP3T has Nougat goodies decidedly on the way, Snapdragon 821 processing power in tow, both 16MP rear and front cameras, as well as 3,400 mAh battery capacity. Overall, it’s just sufficiently better than the OP3 to warrant the small price hike.

OnePlus Issues and Company Responses

(00:04:10)

one-plus-3t-review-780

OnePlus 3T touch latency is a hot topic, but is it being blown out of proportion (partly by us)? If it is an issue, OnePlus claims they’ll fix it after they release Nougat updates. That Nougat update is currently an open BETA for folks who want to give it a spin.

Will these fixes and updates arrive in a timely fashion? Previous issues like RAM management and display accuracy point to fast fixes.

OnePlus 3 Nougat beta opens up

In the run-up to the official Android Nougat update for the OnePlus 3 and 3T, the company has announced its Open Beta 8 program. The software package basically provides a preview of what OxygenOS will look like with Android Nougat on the OnePlus 3. The package, if you’re curious, is available at our source link.

Major line items in this update are new designs for the notifications (which allow for Direct Reply) and settings menu. You can also manually toggle the screen’s DPI and trigger multi-window view. You’re also able to switch up which icons you see on the status bar, what you can switch out on your app shelf and Quick Launch more apps.

In addition to the typical stability and performance issues, you may also find Android Pay unusable. And if you end up wanting to go back to the official Marshmallow build, you’re going to have to contact customer support for the image that you must flash on.

One improvement we’re looking for is in touchscreen latency.

OnePlus will ‘look at’ touch latency issues soon, but only after rolling Nougat out

Just how serious is the touch latency situation on the OnePlus 3 and 3T? Well, it’s serious enough for company co-founder Carl Pei to feel the need, nay, obligation to formally address it on Twitter, but not so bad that it takes precedence over Android N-polishing work.

Nougat still “has higher priority”, with official, wide-scale OTA updates promised by the end of the year, especially given that “for its entire lifecycle, no one gave us this feedback for OP3, and nothing changed.”

Don’t worry, though, that doesn’t mean Pei is questioning the existence or gravity of the touch latency problem, which will be looked into at some point. Just not before Android 7.0 Nougat is ready for primetime on both the refreshed OnePlus 3T and original 3.

Remember, the two devices are due for simultaneous major and minor OS revisions starting with build N, last receiving separate OxygenOS makeovers during Turkey week. The 3T jumped to platform version 3.5.3 with “increased stability and various bug fixes”, “updated touch panel firmware and optimized touch precision”, as well as “updated GPS library and optimized location accuracy.”

The Snapdragon 820-powered OnePlus 3, meanwhile, was incrementally promoted to Marshmallow-based OxygenOS 3.2.8, adding among others 1080p 60fps video recording, “increased system stability”, and “general bug fixes.” So, yeah, the OEM isn’t perfect when it comes to software support, but we’ve certainly seen worse.
