OnePlus 3 touch latency is “worst” a developer has ever seen

Touchscreen latency marks the difference between the tap and swirl of your finger and what the device recognizes as your digit’s current position while it moves. A typical smartphone will have 50 milliseconds of latency. The OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T are not typical smartphones, though — they are “Flagship Killers”. One review has measured the 3T’s touch latency at a whopping 93ms.

XDA-Developers member arter97 made it known to OnePlus through its forums that this issue is one that should be taken care of.

“OnePlus 3 has the worst latency I’ve ever had on an Android device,” arter97 wrote in an extended post on Pastebin. “iPhone always had the lowest latency and iPhone switchers are already noticing the latency on the OnePlus 3.”

Even comparing a Galaxy device and a OnePlus One, the lag was noticeably different.

The operative smoothness of an interface is exclusive from the touch latency of a smartphone display — digging into the hardware, we’re talking about the graphics processing chip versus a touchscreen controller. While the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T may scroll smoothly and with visual pleasure, getting it to do so takes some finagling.

Arter97 believes that all signs point not to Synaptics, the touch sensor manufacturer, nor the Android or Linux kernel, but the tinkering of the touch firmware — clearly in OnePlus’s court. Specifically, they believe that the “move sensitivity,” or the amount of finger movement it takes for a tap to be registered as a scroll, is set too high.

Dozens of users have backed the claim. In a separate thread, the issue was recognized by a OnePlus Bug Hunter and has been forwarded to the development team. A recent software update dated from November 22 for the OnePlus 3T mentions “Updated touch panel firmware and optimized accuracy.” The OnePlus 3 has not gotten a similar update.

This isn’t the only time OnePlus has been taken to task for how it tunes its hardware. The OnePlus 3, despite having 6GB of RAM, was criticized for heavily limiting the number of apps it was able to simultaneously keep in memory. The company followed through with a software tweak.

Prior to OnePlus 3T launch, OnePlus 3 sales stop while Oppomart pushes placeholder

The OnePlus 3T — at least, that’s what we expect its name to be — will be introduced to us tomorrow at 1pm Eastern. And in time for that, the company (and some of its unofficial tentacles) has made some shifts.

The OnePlus 3 is not on sale today. Its price, for now, remains at $399, though OnePlus claims it to be “out of stock.” For your information, the OnePlus 2 is still on sale at $299.

Unofficial marketplace Oppomart has also brought up a development with a listing of this improved and new-fangled OnePlus 3T on its site. It claims that the phone has a Snapdragon 821 with 6GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB of UFS 2.0 storage. The screen, though, is very similar on paper to the OnePlus 3’s, — 5.5 inches in diameter and in full HD resolution — which is a point to ponder with rumors of the screen going from AMOLED to LCD and to quad HD resolution as well. We’re a bit doubtful, too, to hear that Android Marshmallow will ship with the phone.

The kicker is the price: $499. Not $479 as we surmised from an Evan Blass tweet. Hey, anything can happen behind the curtains.

While all this information is likely acting as a placeholder, (there’s mention of the phone “shipping with the energy efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset”) we really shouldn’t get too eager about pre-orders anyways: Oppomart isn’t even offering them.

So our advice to you is to wait. Tomorrow is only a day away.

First Nougat community build is coming to OnePlus 3 this month, OTA update in December

For all of the company’s device marketing and distribution progresses lately, OnePlus continued to disappoint on the software support front, especially as far as the recurrently troubled X was concerned.

But the mid-ranger did ultimately receive its over-the-air Marshmallow love, and by combining the Android-skinning efforts behind OxygenOS and HydrogenOS, OnePlus took a solemn oath it would speed up future platform updates.

That may well happen sooner than you think, with Nougat goodies apparently headed for the Chinese OEM’s newest flagship phone later this month. Before Android 7.0 can roll out to the OnePlus 3 user masses, of course, a few community builds will be available for brave public beta testers.

If everything goes smoothly, and prospective bugs can be quickly squashed, a polished OS makeover could follow with a relatively large-scale delivery by the end of the year, i.e. sometime in December.

It would be the ultimate Christmas gift for existing OnePlus 3 owners, while those still on the fence about the 5.5-inch Snapdragon 820 powerhouse might want to wait and see what 3T’s deal is. Perhaps the oft-rumored SD821 spin-off is to run Android 7.0 Nougat out the box.

Don’t give up on the OnePlus 2 either, formally guaranteed now to move beyond Marshmallow too… eventually, with the One and X however probably left behind for good.

OnePlus confirms Snapdragon 821 device for November 15 event, likely OnePlus 3T

What may be considered the “Turbo” edition of the OnePlus 3 is due out in just seven days. OnePlus itself has confirmed the existence and launch date of a device that features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset as opposed to the Snapdragon 820 as put on the OnePlus 3.

A 15-second teaser video posted to the company’s Twitter account brags about the extra 200 megacycles clocked per second between the 821 and the 820.

There will be a Facebook Live event on November 15 at 1pm Eastern to showcase the product. It is not clear if the event will be in London, as previously rumored. Also not clear is what other spec changes will follow along with the “T” and if a price change will take effect.

Qualcomm teases ‘something new’ from OnePlus, powered by Snapdragon 821

Qualcomm is without a doubt the world leader in supplying processors for both high-end and mid-range smartphones, but even though the San Diego-based semiconductor titan’s vast partner roster includes everyone from Samsung to LG, Huawei, Lenovo, HTC, BlackBerry, OPPO and Xiaomi, the company still finds time to promote a slightly lower-profile alliance.

In case you forgot, QCM insists on calling attention via Twitter to “something new from OnePlus” that’s apparently “on the way”, “powered by our #Snapdragon 821 processor.” That’s all you’ll get from the ever-growing American chip champion for now, which should be plenty to lend further credence to recent OnePlus 3T gossip.

Unless, of course, this is merely the super-early beginning of a buzz-building campaign for next year’s OnePlus 4, which feels like a stretch, not to mention a greatly improved SD830 SoC will probably become the flagship handheld norm by then.

For its part, the Snapdragon 821 marginally enhances the raw power and energy efficiency of the 820 inside the original OnePlus 3, begging the question of this 3T’s necessity. But perhaps the $479 incremental upgrade is to bump screen resolution up to Quad HD after all, picking up a superior 20MP rear-facing camera and souped-up 3,300 mAh or so battery as well. All shall be revealed and fully detailed next week, rumor has it.

OnePlus 3T specs refined, reveal date could be November 14

The souped-up OnePlus 3 we’re expecting should be headed for us within the next two weeks. At least, it’ll supposedly be headed for a London event — ha, take that Brexit!

More specifications are being tossed around about the OnePlus 3T that will supposedly have a quad HD LCD. At least, that’s what the rumors keep saying — company co-founder Carl Pei has insisted that Optic AMOLED is far superior.

Backing that display is a Snapdragon 821 with 6GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB of storage. Battery capacity goes up 10 percent to 3,300mAh. Finally, there should be a black variant that will leave Soft Gold lovers questioning their purchasing decision.

All of the above represent either lateral moves or slight improvements from the OnePlus 3’s specifications.

That London event is rumored for Monday, November 14. We’ll see if we get any indications from OnePlus about this in the coming days.

Blass: OnePlus 3T may cost around $479

What’s the formula to making a great smartphone? Lots of research, plenty of development, a little engineering and some time. A little oversimplified, but we’re being general, here.In the case of OnePlus, it means pulling off a mid-cycle update to its OnePlus 3 (sorta like how Microsoft updated the Surface Book with a juiced-up i7 model) with

OnePlus 3 is here to stay, despite tight supply and month-long shipping delays

Given the traditional openness to both the public and press of OnePlus head honchos in discussing even the wildest rumors and sketchy speculation over past, present and future devices, it was pretty obvious it wouldn’t take Carl Pei long to crush 3S gossip.Indeed, the company co-founder and social media guru has quickly clarified the situation of the “original” OnePlus 3 on Twitter, various forum posts and by contacting tech blogs directly, highlighting any ...

Android Marshmallow is coming to the OnePlus X next week, Nougat for OP3 also nigh

The reformed OnePlus, wholly focused on high-end smartphones and solid software support now, is definitely looking to tone down its controversial marketing ploys, but when it comes to public communication, there are no radical changes in the pipeline. That’s a great thing, mind you, considering Pete Lau and Carl Pei’s very transparent policies implemented ever since the Chinese OEM was born in ...
