Canadian Pixel update shakes things up with new Moves

The Pixel may soon unlock a couple of gestures that will make unlocking the device a little easier.

Canadian units of the Pixel and Pixel XL seemed to have first dibs on what appears to be a preview (or, at the very least, a pre-release) build of the next version of Android 7.1, named NPF26J. The reason why it’s so odd is because this software package was transmitted over the air through Telus and not as part of the Android 7.1 Developer Preview program — which got its second major update today — as it usually carries updates with build names with the “NPxxxx” or “NDxxxx” notation.

This “Security Update + Bug Fixes” may have quashed some critters, but it also brought a couple of new Moves like being able to double-tap the screen from sleep to bring up notifications. Another Move allows you to get your notifications by lifting the phone.

If you have a Pixel or Pixel XL on build NDE63V, you can click on the following links to sideload the update.

Google Daydream View hitting retail worldwide on November 10

Google was able to see Lenovo’s Project Tango phone kick off sales today, but in addition to augmented reality, there’s also a development in the virtual reality world today… well, technically Project Tango is working under the wing of Daydream VR, but it’s another kick-off of sales anyways.

Google’s own Daydream View headset will actually come offline for sales at $79 in the US, $99 in Canada, $119 in Australia and £69 or €69 in the UK or Germany. The magic date for sales and first shipments is November 10.

In addition to the Google Store, you may choose to wait to buy the teched-up piece of lovely upholstery at Verizon stores across the United States. Canada will see the sets at Rogers, Telus and Best Buy while Europe will get them at EE, Carphone Warehouse and Deutsche Telekom. Aussies can head over to JB Hi-Fi or Telstra.

In nine days, the new headset officially will usher in a new Daydream VR platform for Android Nougat with a new mission for how the operating system will interface and play in a new medium.
