Vivo V5 aims to take your selfie obsession to the next level with 20MP front camera

We all know megapixels aren’t everything when it comes to the real-life performance of a smartphone’s camera these days, with 12MP flagship models like the Samsung Galaxy S7, Google Pixel XL or HTC 10 handily beating 16, 20 or 23MP imaging powerhouses in comprehensive photography comparisons.

But it’s probably nigh impossible for our selfie-passionate readers and friends to contain their excitement over the 20MP front-facing cam-touting Vivo V5 until someone actually takes that beast for a test run.

Unveiled exclusively in India at the moment, where it’s slated to kick off pre-orders on Wednesday ahead of a commercial November 26 launch, this overall mid-range 5.5-incher even puts OPPO’s F1s “selfie expert” to shame in terms of the “secondary” camera’s theoretical capabilities.

In addition to a mind-blowing megapixel count, the shooter also flaunts a top-notch Sony IMX376 sensor, “Moonlight Glow” flash, f/2.0 aperture, and Face Beauty 6.0 software tricks. Speaking of, the Vivo V5 is based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which is just the first of many average-sounding features.

You get a mediocre octa-core MediaTek MT6750 SoC as well, comparatively disappointing 13MP rear snapper, 720p screen resolution, decent metal unibody build with fairly thick bezels, 3,000 mAh battery, and… no, 4GB RAM is in fact not at all disappointing. Not at Rs. 17,980, or around $265. And remember, the BBK-owned Vivo brand isn’t very big in the Western world yet, but it’s huge in several parts of Asia, so it may not be smart to rule out an eventual global rise.
