Acer Liquid M220 Review: The $80 Smartphone

At a certain point, a deal is so good that certain sacrifices become acceptable, right?

Acer Liquid M220, an $80 smartphone

Acer Liquid M220, an $80 smartphone

That would at least appear to be Acer’s philosophy with its first US smartphone offering, the Windows Phone-powered Liquid M220. For a mere $80 off contract, users can get their hands on a full-fledged smartphone, albeit an entry level one. Emerging markets are undoubtedly at least part of the target audience here, but that’s still a solid deal no matter how you slice it.

It’s important to remember that you get what you pay for — at $80, this simply isn’t a top-notch, high-end device, nor was there any way Acer could have made it one.  But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t some decent bang for your buck to be found here.

Build & Design

The build of the Liquid M220 is simple, but it also has a certain understated appeal to it. Sharp-angled edges and rounded corners make for a straightforward slab of a phone that, while unadventurous, is comfortable in its familiarity. It’s also very low-profile, weighing in at 4.2 ounces (119 grams) and sporting a nice, small footprint that measures only 4.92 x 2.52 x 0.38 inches.

That said, it feels like Acer made the bezel unnecessarily large, especially below the display, given that Windows Phones no longer place capacitive navigation buttons on the hardware itself, instead opting to display them on screen. It’s not a huge deal; it just seems like wasted space.

Though the removable backing is cheap, flimsy plastic that has only the slightest of textures to it, a ridged band snakes its way around the edges of the phone, thankfully lending the user something to grip. Underneath the back plate lies access to the unit’s removable battery, microSD card slot, and two SIM card slots. The two SIM card slots are different sizes, with one for a regular-sized SIM and one for a microSIM.

The arrangement and selection of the phone’s buttons and ports is standard, with the 3.5mm headphone jack and microUSB charging port located on the top edge, and the volume rocker and power button located on the right. The left and bottom edges are devoid of any features, while the Liquid M220’s 5-megapixel rear-facing camera is centered towards the top of the phone’s back, and the 2-megapixel front-facing shooter is located in the upper right corner above the display.

Display

As mentioned, with such a low off-contract price point, it’s to be expected that many aspects of the Liquid M220 will be lacking in quality, and in few places is it more apparent than the device’s display.

Before I really lay into it, though, I would like to point out that I find the smaller screen size refreshing; this reviewer is particularly averse to the unstoppable trend of smartphones becoming increasingly large in the name of massive displays. So the Liquid M220’s 4-inch display is perfectly comfortable for me, but the compliments end there.

Graininess abounds on the display, which is to be expected when the resolution is a mere 800 x 480 pixels. Colors aren’t particularly crisp, and the brightness is very poor. Even on its highest setting, the brightness of the Liquid M220 is underwhelming at best, and it makes viewing the display outdoors in high-light situations nearly impossible.

Now Shazam lets you know when Shaggy hears a song he likes

Now Shazam lets you know when Shaggy hears a song he likes

Apple Music is almost here and all the competing music services are rolling out new features to try and compete with the big dog. Shazam has opted for social elements with a new area in the app called Personal Music Home which shows off what your favourite artists are listening to.

You've been able to follow artists for a while but now thirty of the services biggest artists have opted to share what they're Shazaming.

Artists include Pitbull, Calvin Harris, Robin Thicke, Clean Bandit, Maroon 5, Meghan Trainor, Coldplay, Usher, One Direction, Alicia Keys, Imagine Dragons, Linkin Park and many more. Even Pearl Jam are in on the action.

Al-a Shazam

Adding up all the followers for the thirty acts and there are over 600 million people wanting to know what they're listening to.

So if you want to know what Calvin Harris hears and feels like sampling whilst out at the shops, you now can.

It's an interesting concept to take people - and potentially artists - away from the likes of Apple Music but it's only really going to appeal to the core fans; it's going to need a few more acts than just the thirty ones here. Hopefully more will be added soon.

Apple might finally ditch the 16GB iPhone – and it’s about time

Apple might finally ditch the 16GB iPhone - and it's about time

One of our longest-standing annoyances about the iPhone might soon be solved, as Apple is apparently looking to increase the storage capacity of its upcoming models.

However rather than boosting the top end above 128GB it's seemingly looking to make changes to the mid-tier models. At least that's the implication of a report in the Korea Times.

It doesn't get into any more detail than that, but given the extremely restrictive nature of 16GB models we hope it could mean an end to them, with 32GB becoming the smallest size.

The more the better

Apple has apparently been pleased with the sales of its 64GB phones, which suggests consumers are looking for higher capacities than 16GB. Given that Apple doesn't sell a 32GB iPhone 6 it would make sense for that size to replace 16GB in the iPhone 6S.

The report also claims that Samsung is in negotiations with Apple to supply flash memory chips for the next iPhone, though apparently no agreement has yet been made.

This information all comes from "a source close to the deal" and as always we'd take it with a healthy helping of salt.

Even if it is true it sounds like it's all just things Apple is considering and there's no definitive information on what Apple's storage plans are - so the 16GB iPhone may not have breathed its last just yet, but we live in hope.

Galaxy A8 hands-on video reveals Samsung’s thinnest phone ever

Galaxy A8 hands-on video reveals Samsung's thinnest phone ever

It seems the cat is well and truly out of the bag when it comes to the Samsung Galaxy A8. We've heard specs, we've seen pictures, and now we've got a video.

The footage, which was obtained by Nowhereelse.fr, shows the Samsung Galaxy A8 from just about every conceivable angle, as well as showing the camera in action and various settings screens to further confirm some of the specs.

It all echoes what we've seen and heard before, but it's a little bit harder to fake the look of a phone on video, so there's a good chance this is the real deal.

Samsung's slimmest

YouTube : www.youtube.com/watch?t=28&v=lzmmr1pt_cM

It looks slim, which it certainly should, given that it's supposedly just 5.94mm thick, and it seems to be sporting the metal frame that we've seen in all the pictures.

The video also mentions that the Galaxy A8 has a 5.7-inch 1080 x 1920 Super AMOLED screen with a pixel density of 386 pixels per inch, an octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 16MP rear camera, a 5MP front-facing one, 16GB of expandable storage, a 3050mAh battery and Android 5.1, all of which we've heard before.

What we're still less sure about is when it will launch, though we'd expect it will be soon given that it's been so heavily and consistently leaked.

That just leaves the question of whether it will launch worldwide, as so far only a Chinese version has been certified, but the word is we might at least see it across Europe and Asia.

Amazon Prime Now brings one-hour deliveries to London

Amazon Prime Now brings one-hour deliveries to London

Amazon wants to decrease the wait between you buying items and them appearing in your hands – it's even working on a drone delivery service to make it faster – but now some UK Prime customers can receive their purchase within an hour.

Prime Now has launched in certain London postcodes offering 60 minute delivery between the hours of 8am and midnight with over 10,000 items up for sale including games consoles as well as daily essentials like coffee and nappies.

Even if you live in London it's quite unlikely the service will be at your address yet though – at the moment it's only for the real central areas in London. You can check whether your postcode is covered here.

I want it now

Amazon hopes to launch the service in the remainder of London and other UK cities by the time the year is out.

Prime members can download the app now and if you want it in the hour window you'll need to pay £6.99 or you can opt for a specific two hour window for free.

It takes quite a lot of effort to be able to get an item out to you within an hour so don't go expecting Prime Now to launch across the country by the end of the year – it's still only really possible in major cities.

This could be the new Moto G in all its glory

This could be the new Moto G in all its glory

A new set of images have been leaked that might show Motorola's upcoming Moto G (2015) handset.

If these images, which were leaked to TechnoBuffalo by an anonymous source, are legitimate then it is our best look yet at the still unannounced budget smartphone.

The images show a device that's very similar to the one seen in previous Moto G (2015) leaks, with a metallic strip running down the body underneath the rear camera.

Pass the source

The high quality nature of these shots gives us a very clear image of what the Moto G (2015) could look like, and they might even be official Motorola press images.

However it's worth remembering that the source who provided the photographs is not verified, and that the Moto G (2015) has yet to be announced, so we still do not know much about the next handset.

The Moto G 2015 has been previously rumoured to come with a 5-inch screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chip, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage and Android 5.1.1.

A release date has not been confirmed either, though with the Moto G (2014) launching in September last year, could Motorola be planning to launch the next one around the same time in 2015?

LG G4, Samsung Galaxy S6 sales fall short of expectations, claims report

We’ve heard a lot about Samsung Galaxy S6 sales; some reports claimed that things are looking good, others insinuated that the situation could be better. You never know who to trust when it comes down to bits like these, and today’s report doesn’t manage to shed more light either (granted, the report is based on ...

In 2017, you can kiss goodbye to European roaming fees

In 2017, you can kiss goodbye to European roaming fees

Soon we can be as anti-social on holiday as we are at home, as the European Union has struck a preliminary deal to end roaming fees by June 15 2017.

The decision followed 12 hours of talks with EU lawmakers according to Reuters, and will mean that hopefully by mid-2017 you'll be able to travel to any of the 28 EU member nations and use your phone exactly as you would at home, with no bank-breaking fees.

It's a decision that's been a long time coming, as prior EU agreements had already aimed to lower the cost of roaming abroad and it's good news for, well, everyone, except mobile networks we suppose, and Three specifically as it will lose one of its main selling points.

Not so neutral net

Another seemingly positive outcome of the recent talks concerns net neutrality, as the EU apparently plans to order telecoms operators and ISPs to treat all internet traffic equally. This agreement will come into effect in April 2016, but allowances for providers to set aside parts of their network for "specialised", "higher quality" services suggests the net might not be so equal after all.

This all assumes we're even still in the EU by then, but it certainly gives us a couple more reasons to stay.

Microsoft is about to kill Windows Phone, claims bold new rumour

Microsoft is about to kill Windows Phone, claims bold new rumour

Microsoft is going through some big changes right now: it just sold part of Bing Maps directly to Uber and it seems like Windows Phone may soon be up for a change as well.

Rumours are suggesting Satya Nadella and his Senior Leadership Team are discussing the option to drop Windows Phone from the mobile phone line and smaller tablets.

According to leakster MSFTNerd Twitter account Microsoft would instead offer Android with particular apps and services pre-loaded.

Take all this with plenty of salt, but it wouldn't be the most unlikely thing to happen - especially as it comes just days after Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella sent staff a mission statement affirming that the company must "make some tough choices in areas where things are not working."

RIP?

Microsoft previously made a deal to pre-load services on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge including Skype, OneNote and Office apps.

The new rumours suggest Microsoft and Google would partner in a deal that would see the latter develop specific versions of Google Maps, YouTube and Search for the Microsoft desktop OS.

We've reached out to Microsoft for comment but we've yet to receive an official response. Some may see dropping the Windows Phone platform as admitting defeat but a focus on apps and services may be what the company needs right now.

Microsoft is going through some tough restructuring measures right now but dropping Windows Phone all together is a drastic step.

Although not released under Microsoft's reign, the Nokia X and Nokia XL were the first Nokia devices to run on the Android platform and we've yet to see a follow up - could it soon be that all Microsoft devices are running Google's OS?

How Does Hound Stack Up To The Rest? (Video)

Hound is SoundHound’s new voice assistant to compete with the likes of Google Now, Siri, and Cortana. It, like the others, can launch apps, run search queries, identify songs, and more, but one thing that’s caught wide attention for this service is its ability to process complex, multi-part queries in a manner similar to Wolfram Alpha. Questions like “What is the population and capital for Japan and China?” work without a hitch, and very quickly at that. But rarely will most people ask a voice assistant such complicated questions. Instead, most people use these ...

Mysterious Verizon-bound Motorola “Kinzie” gets benchmarked

A new Motorola device whose codename we’ve been tracking over the past few months has made an appearance today in the GFXBench benchmark. Flying under the “Motorola Kinzie” codename, the phone appears to be a flagship-level smartphone making its way over to Verizon at some point. The benchmark reveals a few of the device’s specifications; specifically, it brings a 5.5-inch Quad HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor (with a coupled Adreno 430 GPU), 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage (implied; 21GB is accessible by the end user), 20MP rear camera, and ...

Google Hangouts iOS update brings improved UI, loads of features

While we’re waiting patiently for that long-rumored Hangouts 4.0 Android update to land, we get to watch iOS get all the fun a tad bit early. This isn’t much of a surprise, really – iOS saw a Hangouts redesign ages ago that still surpasses the sorry state of the Android app as it stands currently – but it is unfortunate for those of us who have been waiting for a long, long time for this to come to Android. If you’re using iOS, though, this is a welcome change, bringing Hangouts ...
