Trump urged to re-enforce ZTE ban

ZTE's return to the US may be short-lived after several politicians urged President Trump to re-instate the ban on the Chinese manufacturer.

In a letter to the President, Senator Mark Warner, the Democratic vice chairman of the Intelligence Committee, and Marco Rubio, a Republican member of the committee, claimed that ZTE should be banned as it still posed a "significant threat" to US national security.

“ZTE, though publicly traded, is a state-backed enterprise that is ultimately loyal not to its shareholders, but to the Chinese Communist Party and Chinese government,“ the letter stated, according to Reuters.

New ZTE US ban

ZTE has been under scrutiny in the US for some time after the Trump administration publicly accused both it and fellow Chinese firm Huawei of illegal surveillance on US interests.

The company was hit with a ban from operating in the US earlier this year after it breached an agreement reached for illegally shipping products to North Korea and Iran.

This led ZTE to suspend all activity, however the company returned to operations earlier this month after striking a deal that saw it pay a $1 billion fine, change its board and management, and put $400 million in escrow.

You can now give Alexa voice commands on your iPhone and iPad

The Alexa iOS app will finally support voice functionality, according to an announcement from Amazon this month.

The software is being rolled out in the coming days to Apple devices, further expanding the Alexa ecosystem – which encompasses the Amazon Echo range of smart speakers, Fire TV streaming devices, and even a number of LG smart TVs.

Users will now be able to use voice commands for search queries, media streaming, and connecting to compatible smart home devices when using Amazon’s AI assistant.

One happy family

For consumers torn between loyalty for various technology giants, this news will no doubt bring a sense of relief, allowing a more complete experience when using Amazon’s AI assistant on their iPhone or iPad.

Apple are unsurprisingly hesitant to completely hand over the reigns, however. Siri will remain as the default assistant on Apple devices, meaning users will have to actively seek out the Alexa app to activate the AI competitor.

By comparison, Android phone users are already able to opt for Alexa as their preferred voice assistant.

Flagship Nokia smartphone teased with more details expected soon

The Nokia 8 Sirocco has the looks and the price tag, but it doesn't quite deliver a 2018 flagship experience, but there could be a new hero handset on its way.

That's according to Twitter leaker Roland Quandt, who has a reasonable track record of revealing smartphone details ahead of time, as he has tweeted a teaser about a potentially new, high-end Nokia.

Quandt teases a 'high-end SoC' for the handset, which could well mean this new Nokia flagship may sport the Snapdragon 845 - a chip that the 8 Sirocco really should have had, instead of the older 835.

More interestingly though, he also mentions that the phone will boast a technology being pioneered by Chinese brands.

That immediately makes us think of the recently announced Vivo Nex and Oppo Find X, both of which ditch the notch, offer all-screen designs and pop up cameras.

It means we could see a high screen-to-body ratio on the rumored phone, as a pop-up camera seems less likely at this time.

More to come

That's all the detail we have for now, but Quandt says he'll have more for us today, and we'll update this article with any additional information he may have on the subject.

We've also contacted HMD Global to find out if we can get any more information from the company directly.

Apple AirPods 2 charging case might also charge your iPhone

Apple’s AirPods come with a charging case which lets you keep them juiced up even when you’re out and about, but the next-generation version could come with a case that can also charge up your iPhone.

That’s according to ‘an industry source familiar with the plan’, speaking to Nikkei Asian Review, and they add that this could be available by the end of the year, but warn that the schedule is still subject to change.

So it’s very possible that this new charging case could come with the AirPods 2, which are rumored to land this year complete with hands-free Siri activation.

If not 2 then 3

On the other hand, if it does slip into 2019, that might mean it lands with the AirPods 3, which could have noise cancellation and water resistance according to rumors.

That’s assuming this rumor is even right, but packing the case with enough battery capacity to add a meaningful amount of charge to an iPhone without making it big and bulky could be a big ask, so we’d take this claim with a pinch of salt.

Still, it’s in line with Apple’s plans to make its devices ever more free of wires, and could be a nice companion to the AirPower mat, which is designed to charge your iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods all at once.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 2500 chip could help make kid watches mainstream

Despite what the name suggests, Qualcomm's all-new Snapdragon Wear 2500 platform is not a true Wear 2100 sequel. But it's still an interesting wearable SoC.

You can now play Pokemon Quest on Android and iPhone

A month after it was released on Nintendo Switch, Pokémon Quest has now made its way to mobile devices and you can download and play it now on both Android and iOS.

The game is a free-to-play action title set in the world of Pokémon, but it's very different to the normal RPG Pokémon titles you may be used to playing.

First off, Pokémon Quest has a very unique art style with blocky characters, and for the first time you'll have a Pokémon who can run around outside of their ball for most of the game.

You'll be exploring around a new location called Tumblecube where you'll spend most of your time finding extra monsters and power-ups you can use when fighting.

Even more Pokémon

As it's a free-to-play title, you'll be able to spend your money in the game through microtransactions to get extra benefits.

This is both very different to Pokémon Go and the normal titles you'll be used to playing in the franchise, but it has been an interesting idea on Switch so far and it's great to see another Pokemon game on mobile too.

You can download Pokémon Quest on Android and iOS from their respective app stores right now, and you can watch the full trailer below to get a taste of what to expect.

iPhone 9 could be surprisingly affordable and new iPads could have Face ID

Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has issued a new research note, packed full of information about upcoming iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches.

In the note, obtained by MacRumors, he says that the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone (which might be called the iPhone 9) will have iPhone X-like features yet go on sale for just $600-$700 (around £450-£530, AU$810-AU$950), which is significantly less than his earlier estimate. Perhaps unsurprisingly he therefore believes this will be the best-selling new iPhone model.

And despite apparently entering production later than the rumored 5.8-inch iPhone XI and 6.5-inch iPhone XI Plus, the iPhone 9 is said to go on sale alongside them in September.

Improvements and innovations

Moving on to iPads, Kuo is reiterating earlier claims that new models this year (presumably the iPad Pro 3) will sport Face ID, and he’s also standing by his earlier claim that the Apple Watch 4 will have a larger screen.

Looking further ahead, Kuo adds that he believes 2019’s iPhones will have “marked innovations” but says that the design and features of these phones probably won’t become clearer until September or October of this year at the earliest.

Much of this information isn’t new, but that Kuo is standing by it suggests he has confidence in it, and if the iPhone 9 really is as cheap as he expects it could be something of a bargain by Apple standards, as that’s a potentially lower launch price than the iPhone 8 had. We should find out how accurate most of this information is in September.
