Compact Xiaomi Mi S 4.6-inch powerhouse rumored with SD821, Full HD screen, 4GB RAM

Xiaomi has been keeping busy lately, unveiling in the space of just a few weeks more high-end smartphone models than some rival OEMs do over an entire year. Granted, the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus are very much alike, and the Mi MIX isn’t exactly what you’d call a mainstream consumer-oriented product with mass appeal.

Still, all three aforementioned hero devices, as well as the Mi Note 2, have been released in larger or smaller quantities this fall, and yet Xiaomi is further rumored to be cooking up a flat-screened Mi Note 2 variant, “diminutive” 5.5-inch Mi MIX Nano, and legitimately tiny Mi S.

Wait, just Xiaomi Mi S? That’s beyond confusing. But maybe today’s “leaked” 4.6-inch Snapdragon 821 powerhouse will go official under a different, easier to remember and isolate name. Like, say, Mi 5s Mini or Nano.

Unfortunately, we can’t be certain of the disclosed information’s authenticity, especially as the compact flagship’s spec sheet sounds a little too good to be true. A little too much like the wet dream of a nostalgic pint-sized mobile phone enthusiast.

You have your miniature, pixel-packed Full HD display, top-of-the-line Qualcomm processor, 4GB RAM, 128GB internal storage, plus the same 12MP Sony IMX378 rear-facing camera and 4MP selfie shooter as the “full-sized” Mi 5s. A modest 2600mAh battery and somewhat chunky 8.2mm profile, meanwhile, are either clear indicators of a refreshing reality check or shrewd attempts to make an obvious hoax seem semi-plausible.

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is all curves, but will there be a flat version?

The Mi Note 2 was long in the making but is finally here. And it has the edge screen to show off. But what if you wanted just a plain, flat slab to use? Tough luck.

Xiaomi marketing director and head of counterfeit oversight Zang Zhiyuan reblogged a post on Chinese social media site Weibo that simply said that the Mi Note 2 would not come in a flat version.

His comment? “Oh.” Is that all he could muster up?

Regardless, it seems that Zang’s reblog and comment have been taken as verification that despite rumors of a flat Note 2 floating around, they’ve come, alas, to a dead end.

Bubble popping has become more of a popular activity in recent times with Meizu and OnePlus also having shot down a few whispers.

First batch of Xiaomi Mi Note 2 sold out in 50 seconds

Xiaomi always has its fans at the ready when the time comes to launch a new phone. Even though it typically can’t produce enough product to sate the crowd, the sales go on anyways. And in the case of the Mi Note 2, they went on for a cool 50 seconds.

That’s the reported length of the first flash sale for the edgy phablet, sold only in its memory configuration of 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage — on sale for ¥2,799 or ($414). The 6/128GB config (¥3,299/$488) has yet to go on sale. There’s also a global version of the high-end model (¥3,499/$517) on the way, too. The next batch will be snatched up on November 8.

Fair warning to those looking at the in-your-face concept phone, the Mi MIX: it goes on flash sale November 3.

Xiaomi wants to do the US smartphone expansion right, carrier tests already underway

Although Xiaomi didn’t make the top five global smartphone vendor list for Q3 2016, also dropping out of the domestic podium, as OPPO and Vivo invested heavily in offline sales, marketing and promotions, the so-called “Apple of China” remains a force to be reckoned with.

A creative force, mainly, based on the recent announcement of a conceptual but ready-for-primetime edgeless Mi MIX. Xiaomi will try to compete in the increasingly crowded low-cost VR headset landscape too, at least on Chinese shores, while continuing to expand in markets like Russia, Mexico and even the US, as far as the ultra-affordable 4K-enabled Mi Box is concerned.

Sooner or later however, this six year-old company needs to take a page from compatriot and arch-rival Huawei’s playbook, getting serious about North American phones or die trying. As it turns out, Xiaomi doesn’t just want to sell products like the Mi 5 or Mi Note 2 directly to US consumers in unlocked variants that may or may not properly function on the nation’s largest wireless networks.

“Small-field trials” have apparently begun earlier this year for Xiaomi to “sharpen” its chops, and eventually be able to launch “full-on products there.” Full-on, as in compatible with as many major carriers as possible, and perhaps even subsidized by one or two. It’s quite an ambitious goal, but it’s still going to take up to a couple of years for it to be fully achieved.

It apparently ‘doesn’t make sense’ to launch the borderless Xiaomi Mi MIX outside of China

We’ve been patiently waiting for the “Apple of China” to at least try to unlock its full global potential with a phone, any phone, officially released stateside for several years now, and while various Xiaomi execs have vowed such an expansion will eventually happen, it’s probably wise to keep your expectations low regarding the Mi MIX “concept.”If calling the “edgeless” 6.4-inch ...

OPPO and Vivo climb to the top two Chinese smartphone brand spots, leaving Huawei behind

They say a prophet is not without honor save in his own country, and while Western mobile consumers continue to warm up to both mid and high-end Huawei devices, the world’s third largest smartphone manufacturer is surprisingly losing steam domestically. The former Chinese market leader had to settle for a disappointing bronze medal in Q3 sales, although technically, its numbers still surged year-on-year. But they only did so by 4 percent, whereas OPPO reported an 82 percent increase in local shipments ...

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 comes out with dual curved design, 6GB RAM, global LTE support

The rumor mill spun out of control a little leading up to today’s Xiaomi Mi Note 2 presentation in Beijing, as the “Apple of China” was wildly expected to load everything but the kitchen sink onto its latest flagship Android phone while somehow keeping the price low.Of course, any levelheaded mobile enthusiast probably knew a sub-$500 handheld couldn’t possibly pull out all the stops, from a dual rear ...

Leaked Xiaomi Mi Note 2 presentation slides include everything from dual cam to iris scanner

While calling Xiaomi’s recently unveiled Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus disappointing would be a bit of an exaggeration, the two Android high-enders are certainly confusing.Just one version of the smaller model sports a 3D Touch display, the Mi 5s also carries an “under-glass” fingerprint scanner in both 3 and 4GB RAM configurations, whereas the Plus can go all the way up to 6 gigs of memory, doubling down on rear cam lenses as well. But if you wait
