Chrome OS gets PIN unlock in the developer channel

Windows 10 allows for a simple PIN input for user authentication. Google thought it might be a good idea to also allow its Chromebooks to do that, just like its Android phones.Whatever the case, PIN unlock capabilities are now available in the latest developer update under the flag #quick-unlock-pin. According to Chromium evangelist François Beaufort, users will have to reboot, then hit up the Material Design settings to set up a PIN for the lock screen.Developers are still trying working ...

In the beta out for iOS 10, there’s a change to the platform’s operating procedure that may have you scratching your head just a bit.We are closing in on ten years of the whole “Slide to Unlock” paradigm where you would pull a tab across the bottom of the screen to access your home screen or your security measure. Touch ID complicated things with an almost-instant touch-to-sensor ...

European LG G5 gets official bootloader unlock support

While LG’s proprietary Android skin has never been the worst out there, actually bringing a number of nifty software add-ons to the table and keeping stock modifications to a relative minimum, we’re certain some OS purists would still love to be able to load up a 100 percent vanilla Marshmallow package on the G4 or G5.Or maybe you’d just like to be free to customize the two phones’ UI at will. Well, that’s doable now without jumping through too many hoops, or downloading shady unlocking tools from obscure developer forums. To be fair, an official bootloader unlock guide has been ...

White House Responds to Unlocking Petition, Supports Legalization

Smartphone owners in the United States have made their voices heard: when it comes to network-unlocking handsets, they don’t want the carriers getting the final word. While until recently, an exemption to the DMCA let users unlock their own phones without fear of legal repercussions, a recent reevaluation of those exemptions removed the protection for unlocking. In an effort to bring unlocking back, concerned users signed a petition requesting the White House to do something about the situation. After

Successful Petition to Force White House to Address Carrier Unlocking

Last time the United States reconsidered which exemptions it would grant to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the right to carrier unlock your smartphone, previously protected under an earlier round of exemptions, was taken off the table. While jailbreaking is still kosher, you’re now only able to legally unlock your phone by asking your carrier nicely. In an effort to see this situation change, a petition was started to force the White House to, at the least, acknowledge and comment upon the situation, with ...

Want Carrier Unlocking to Be Legal? Petition Needs Your Support

Last month, the expiration of DMCA exemptions for protection of users choosing to unlock their smartphones vanished, after it failed to be re-approved during the most recent round of exemption considerations. We talked about just what this meant at the time, and the potential impact it could have on the mobile market. While it’s another three years before the exemption is set to be reevaluated, a petition has been underway on the White House’s We the People site asking the administration to take action before ...
