Foxconn manager indicted on theft, fraudulent iPhone sales

A Mr. Tsai may spend the next ten years in jail if he is found guilty of breach of trust — in this case, stealing iPhone 5 and 5s units from testing labs and selling them in the open market.

The defendant was a former senior manager at Foxconn, Apple’s top assembly partner for the iPhone, and was identified only as Tsai. He was indicted on Friday.

It is alleged that from 2013 to 2014, he delegated eight subordinates to acquire non-retail testing phones (as opposed to iPhone 7 metal casing shells) and sell them to stores in Shenzhen, China. The New Taipei District claims that Tsai made US$1.56 million from the scheme, said to span over 5,700 units.

Foxconn notified Taiwanese authorities about Tsai after an internal audit.

Labor and graft issues have plagued Foxconn, the largest contract technology products assembler in the world, over the years. Its massiveness doesn’t help but add to its perceived complacency: it has over one million employees on its payroll.

Apple Store cryptically previews one-day Black Friday ‘shopping event’

Guess who’s coming to the Black Friday discount party. Apple, that’s right, and not just through third-party retailers like Walmart, Target or Best Buy this time around.

The actual online US Apple Store will apparently participate in the special “one-day shopping” festivities on November 25, alongside brick and mortar locations too, some of which may even offer “extended” shopping hours.

The fastest way to get in on the looming iDeals is obviously the dedicated Apple Store app, and in-stock items ordered by 5:00 pm shall qualify for free two-day delivery. Alas, that’s all we know about Cupertino’s Black Friday comeback, but recalling other such sales from a few years ago isn’t exactly a major enthusiasm booster.

Gift cards and Apple Music subscription freebies are probably the best you can hope to receive, along with trivial markdowns on old and/or unpopular devices like Apple TVs, the Apple Watch Series 1, iPhone 6s or SE, iPad mini 2 or Air 2, and previous-generation Mac gear.

Still, it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on Apple Stores come Friday, and if we’re right to expect overall disappointing special offers, there’s always Best Buy or Walmart to fall back on. The former has already revealed it’ll be selling the iPhone 7 with up to $250 coupons on Verizon, AT&T or Sprint installment plans, also letting you save a decent $125 on all iPad Air 2 models.

Meanwhile, Walmart is cooking up $250 gift card giveaways for all iPhones, $70 iPad mini 2 discounts, and a sweet $100 iPhone 5s Straight Talk doorbuster.

Walmart unveils full Black Friday 2016 deal roster, cheap phones, tabs and wearables galore

America’s number one discount retailer, which just so happens to also be the world’s largest company by revenue, today follows the comprehensive Black Friday 2016 preview trend by laying all its (heavily marked down) cards on the table for the consumer and competition to catch a glimpse of.

As far as our mobile-first readership is concerned, we probably have to start breaking down Walmart’s mammoth 36-page holiday deal ad with a special mention for free $250 gift cards offered alongside any Apple or Samsung phone activated on AT&T Next or Verizon device payment plans. Any iPhone or Galaxy qualifies, mind you, not just the 7 and S7.

Other standout Walmart gadget bargains compared to Target’s BF steals include a $99 no-contract iPhone 5s and $249 Samsung Galaxy S6 on Straight Talk. If you’d rather sign up to a more popular prepaid operator, Verizon’s $39 Galaxy J3 or AT&T GoPhone’s $49 Huawei Ascend XT sound like pretty solid budget options too.

Then you have several super-low-cost Fitbit wearables, ranging from a $69 Flex 2 to a $129 Charge 2, and both Android and iOS tablets on sale, including a $99 Lenovo Tab 3 10.1 and $200 iPad mini 2. For your living room entertainment needs, Walmart can hook you up with $25 Chromecast 2 or Roku Express Plus HDMI dongles, and all the festivities begin Thursday, November 24, at 6 pm in physical stores.

Avoiding the long lines and inevitable brawls for that last $300 Smart 4K TV is a piece of cake, as digital aisles will be stocked with millions of discounted items all day Thursday. So, yeah, you’re basically looking at a Black Thanksgiving here.

watchOS 3, iOS 10 released, but take your time with it

In another day or two, we’ll probably have to publish a quick story about how fast iOS 10 is being adopted and the torrents of people finding major, iPhone- or iPhone-bricking problems with the update. We hope not to have to write the latter story, actually, but we expect to.Never mind all that, as the iOS 10 software package is available for using to download and install now, as is the watchOS 3 update. You can go to your ...
