BlackBerry Announces Its Q10, The Grand Return of QWERTY

Today’s BlackBerry event is more than just about a platform launch: it’s about new hardware! We’ve been looking forward to two BlackBerry 10 handsets, the full-touch Z10, and a hardware-QWERTY model we thought would be the X10. Well, a good event could always use a few surprises, and that keyboard model turns out to be the Q10, instead (Q for QWERTY, get it?). Unlike the BlackBerry Z10 with its widescreen 4.2-inch display, the Q10 goes for a smaller square screen to make room for the keyboard. The ...

RIM Launches BlackBerry 10

It’s been a long time coming, but after literally years of waiting, the time has finally arrived for BlackBerry 10, the next big chapter in RIM’s smartphone story. The company coordinated an ambitious multinational launch event for the debut of its new OS, and beyond the main stage in Toronto, RIM has simultaneous events going on in London, New York, Johannesburg, Paris, and Dubai. With a global audience watching on, CEO Thorsten Heins took to the stage to formally announce the arrival of BlackBerry 10: “BlackBerry 10 ...

The HTC Mini Is a Great Idea That Will Be Mocked to Death

There’s something about the introduction of the HTC Mini that almost screams “failure.” Like a lawn sprinkler that only works when it’s raining, or a can of bug spray that comes with a fly swatter, a phone that’s so uncomfortable to use that it needs to have a separate, tiny companion phone feels like a tacit admission from the manufacturer that its product is broken beyond repair. I’m sure HTC is going to find itself the target of much ridicule over the release of the HTC Mini, and I ...

Samsung ATIV Odyssey Quick Review

So far, the Samsung of 2013 has proven much less bombastic than the company we came to know as the king of high-profile mobile unveilings in 2012. While it’s no doubt got a surprise or two up its sleeve for MWC next month, it appears that the company lacks either the inclination or the ability to wow us with its first Windows Phone 8 device for the United States. Despite its flashy moniker, the ATIV Odyssey for Verizon Wireless is very much a middle-of-the-road smartphone, in nearly every sense.  Is there ...

Watch today’s Pocketnow Daily as we talk about the Nexus 4 availability in stores, even though that might change by the time this video goes live. HTC makes the news next as we now have confirmed dates and invites for their M7 press event. Then the iPad 5 takes the spotlight as we find images of the new design, which is exactly as we currently see the iPad mini, only bigger obviously. We end today’s show talking about Apple’s release of a 128GB iPad 4 and ...

Acer Developing Sub-$250 Eight-Inch and Ten-Inch Quad-Core Androids

Back during the Consumer Electronics Show, we heard Acer announce its Iconia B1 Android tablet (above), a model that, while it didn’t deliver specs that could even compete with the Nexus 7, managed to catch our attention due to a launch price of only $150. Apparently, the B1 isn’t the full extent of Acer’s interest in tacking the low-cost tablet market, and now a company exec has tipped off the forthcoming arrival of similarly budget-priced eight-inch and ten-inch tablets. According to this, the company is ...
